View Full Version : Adelaide: Air Apartments
pikey March 13th, 2003, 03:31 AM Since I see this construction every day, I can see that it's construction is well on it's way. Infact today there are 2 cranes on site and a heap of workers too.
Does anyone have any renders of this???
pikey March 13th, 2003, 05:02 AM And now the cranes are gone????? They were big truck one's nothing too exciting I guess. There is still heaps of workers though
Cornholio March 13th, 2003, 08:46 AM Where is this building? Details?
Kasey
pikey March 13th, 2003, 08:54 AM Basically the old 13 level ETSA building in adelaide is being reconstructed into a 15 level apartment building, the most exclusive in Adelaide (each room has plasma screens and built in bose surround sound systems for starters!!)
It will be 55m tall and finished 2004, me thinks
I am looking for renders now!
Cornholio March 13th, 2003, 09:00 AM Is this the old ETSA bldg on Glen Osmond Road? With 13 levels to 15, does this mean a rise of two, or are they doing it some other way?
Cheers,
Kasey

dam it would be lound living next door if they have a bose sound system !! thats sure to create tension, it would bad enough with neighbours in the suburbs having good TV other than sharing the same walls !!!
pikey March 13th, 2003, 10:51 PM It's the building on Greenhill road, they are going to add two penthouse levels to the top. Gordon Pickard who has now bought it want's to make it the most exclusive address in adelaide, bar none!!!
Will March 15th, 2003, 12:41 AM Sorry Pikey, but I only have a picture of the failed Grollo proposal from a few years back.
I don't think the new developers have released a rendering, of their vision for the old ETSA building.
CULWULLA March 15th, 2003, 01:26 AM any pix guys of its progress?? anything?
AG March 15th, 2003, 02:00 AM No progress so far. It's still a 12 level empty shell currently.
jacobsian March 15th, 2003, 02:25 AM Haven't they been planning to convert the ETSA building into a residential building for 10 years now?
pikey March 16th, 2003, 09:55 PM There is definatley progress hapening. More internal structuring is being added. I see this building every single day!
Will, I'd like to see a render of the failed grollo proposal!
pikey March 18th, 2003, 07:58 AM They're now in the process of assembling a huge fuck off black crane as we speak!
Will March 19th, 2003, 07:19 AM Here's a picture of the failed Grollo proposal:
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid41/pf4b0bc8a75e5893a3f730e8669cf439c/fcf88199.jpg
pikey March 19th, 2003, 07:30 AM The crane that has arrived is huuuuge! There are other smaller one's onsite now too
pikey March 28th, 2003, 12:25 AM The site is a buzz of activity. There are trucks, cranes excavation equipment all on sire now. PT Building services are incharge of construction. At the moment a lot of debris is being cleared. I saw when I was walking back to work the other day a large structural piece was being raised to the roof. I was taling to a worker there and he said a tower crane will be placed at the back of the building.
Will March 29th, 2003, 08:56 AM I went past this building a few days ago, and it looks like a skeleton.
Most of the walls and internal structures have been removed, leaving only the structural skeleton.
pikey April 7th, 2003, 06:40 AM Temporary fencing has been placed inside the building. Since the building is a skeleton, I'd hate to think of the vertigo you could get looking straight down from 13 levels with no barrier at all!!!
A smaller, second crane has arrived too
pikey June 18th, 2003, 07:36 AM Update for youse. The southern side is getting a large "channel" dug into it. Judging by the width it almost looks like they are preparing for the life core to be placed there.
A temporary elevator is in place and it is all go!
AG June 19th, 2003, 10:22 AM You're right pikey. It made the 10 news today.
Here is some renderings I found off the official site of Air Apartments, there will be more coming as soon as I find more.
http://www.airapartments.com.au/images/shots/shotA_800.jpg
http://www.airapartments.com.au/images/shots/shotC_800.jpg
There is some extra information about Air Apartments as well. It will have 141 apartments, it will be completed by 2005, and apartments will be on sale from October in 2004.
The website is http://www.airapartments.com.au/ . There is a video which shows all 360 degrees of the building under the section named Air Apartments.
pikey June 20th, 2003, 12:17 AM What a fucking awesome view of the skyline!!!!
AG June 21st, 2003, 01:32 AM It's taken 12 years to get this far
by Laura Anderson
Finally something is happening.
For more than 12 years, 220 Greenfill Road has been an empty shell.
Riddled by asbestos and the subject of several failed developments, an $83 million development of the Eastwood site is finally under way by South Australian developers the Pickard Group.
"It has had a bit of history and the timing has been perfect for us," Pickard Group spokesman Stephen Norris said.
"There is a lot of support from Adelaide people who are very glad to see that something is actually happening. It has been a shell for 12 years."
The former ETSA building has been a "white elephant" and was purchased by Pickard Group in August after the shareholders of previous shareholders went broke.
Price tags for the new AIR Apartments range from $275,000 for a two-storey home office apartment on the ground floor to more than $2 million for one of six two-storey luxury penthouses.
Described by the Pickard Group as "Jetsons-like", the AIR Apartments are fitted with all the latest technological features -
One Bang & Olufsen remote that controls all lighting, heating and cooling, curtains, security cameras and appliances.
Dial-in facilities so residents can use their mobile phone to operate appliances.
Fridges that reorder food when supplies run low.
"Much of the technology available has never been available before in Adelaide and in some cases Australia, and it is all being managed here from South Australia," Mr. Norris said.
Buyers - from Adelaide, Sydney and Perth - have placed holding deposits on 65 of the 141 apartments which are being released to the public today.
"It's the chance to swap a substantial home in Toorak Gardens or Leabrook and move closer to the city while maintaining the lifestyle," Mr. Norris said.
Completion is expected in early 2005 with sales through Brock Real Estate.
Will June 21st, 2003, 03:14 PM The picture that was included in today's Advertiser was stunning!
The new proposal is a million times better than the failed Grollo proposal of 1999.
The new design is extremelly modern in apperance whilst retaining some elegance.
AG June 21st, 2003, 03:16 PM I have another rendering of the building on my computer, and will upload as soon as tomorrow.
It looks very similar to 223 North Terrace!!!
pikey June 23rd, 2003, 01:11 AM I work right near the site and can see it all the time. They have placed 2 massive banners on the building. The place is buzzing! I think that these are the best designs for any apartment in Adelaide so far, judging by the renders
jacobsian June 26th, 2003, 02:09 PM http://www.airapartments.com.au/views/11NW.jpg
With views like this.... who could resist?
pikey July 1st, 2003, 05:25 AM Spoke to a guy on site today, and a tower crane will be on site soon. A big and angry bitch.........god I'm tired
pikey July 17th, 2003, 11:11 AM Man are they stripping the hell out of it!! Most of the bricked walls are gone!!! It actually makes it look larger, surprisingly. New signage is up, and over 30 people are on site, according to the site manager
pikey July 18th, 2003, 02:52 AM Construction photos on their way!!

Yes, with an extra 2 levels built on top of it.
AG July 19th, 2003, 06:20 AM This isn't really noticeable from Greenhill Road, but they are also extending the back. This can be seen from Fullarton and Glen Osmond Roads.

pikey November 9th, 2003, 10:03 PM I'll get a pic tommorow, but basically........
The new sales/display office is just about finished, the new external structures are up to level 4, and the internal walls separating the apartments are taking shape. There is some deep excavations finishing up on the southern side of the building. Both of the transportable cranes are gone, does that mean a tower crane cannot be far away???
jacobsian November 14th, 2003, 03:15 AM Okay pikey, i'm interested i'm interested! Pics!!!! :)

Has anyone else managed to take any other pics of the redevelopment going on?
pikey September 27th, 2004, 05:43 AM No recent pics. I'll try and get one soon. The "blade" is being clad now. If you look at if from the back (southern side) the glass used is very reminicent of Q1. I think this one will turn out quite a looker!
Adelarch September 27th, 2004, 12:27 PM Absolutely top photo mate :okay: Great vantage point to get a snap of the finished product in a few months (...nudge nudge wink wink)
pikey November 2nd, 2004, 08:25 AM Well, more and more of the scaffolding is coming off revealing some awesome coloured sections. This tower is turning out brilliantly, it will look awesome once finished. The blade and extra 2 levels really gives it some height. The glass cladding is very simular to Q1, an opaque green. Looking farken awesome!
SA BOY November 2nd, 2004, 08:30 AM this has been going on for ages, I remeber early last year being in Adelaide and seeing it starting and its still not completed. In Dubai we build on average 60 stories in a year and here they cant refurb 12 in 2 years. Seems odd or is it just me!!!!!

jacobsian December 15th, 2004, 03:55 AM It looks Yarra's Edgish. It's also pretty sizable when you look at it. And I must be fucken crazy, because I walked from North Terrace to look at... a building. Those fluro things are giving me the shits, but the rest of the building rubs me the right way. The AGL office next door has bloody hotties everywhere.
Adelarch December 15th, 2004, 06:59 AM I'm completely with you, the building looks very nice apart from those fluoro bits, especially the yellow-green. Hopefully some more colour will play it down a bit
thanks for the pics
Adder-Laid December 15th, 2004, 11:14 AM I was going to say the same thing Yob, very Melbournish...
pikey December 15th, 2004, 10:10 PM Easily the best development at the mo, in my opinion. How refreshing to see a hi-rise in Adelaide with some fucking colour!!
jacobsian December 15th, 2004, 10:40 PM I think when those large box things are constructed on the top, it'll balance out the colourful bits in the middle of it. HEre's hoping the glass inside those yellow square things is a nice deep blue.
This thing looks friggin rad.
Pants December 16th, 2004, 07:09 AM Absolutely love it.
Think it will be the best new building in the city when complete.
SA BOY December 16th, 2004, 09:09 AM I agree guys very melbournish....
Adelarch December 16th, 2004, 10:27 AM definitely I think the fluoro bits will look far better when the rest of the colour is added

Will December 24th, 2004, 03:06 AM I also agree with everyone, this is definately the most sylish development in Adelaide at the moment. This development has turned one of Adelaide's most bland/ugly buildings into a modern, stylish apartment complex, Adelaide can be proud of.
alderson January 6th, 2005, 10:53 AM this is my first visit to this forum and i have to say it's great to see some energy and money being put into the redesigning of such an ugly eyesore, notwithstanding its on again, off again construction history.

redstar March 13th, 2005, 12:51 PM i love the building and the cube top sections although i do detest the colours of the walls, could do with some more earthy natural colours than all that pink blue green shit.
good work adelaide, oh and i do agree with that uy saying how it takes dubai ppl 1 year to do 60 floors and us adelaidians 2 years to do 12... gotta speed up people or does everyone really have athritis here... oooowwww i know i do.

Pants May 9th, 2005, 04:39 AM LOVE THIS BUILDING!!!
Me too mate, but I'm surprised that you love this one, but think Place on Brougham's putrid.
Do you reckon they're all that different?
jacobsian May 9th, 2005, 05:10 AM The context of the building means as much to its design as the design itself. Place on Brougham isn't a building for North Adelaide, although it is an improvement on what is there. My opinion will vary over the next couple of years, and i'm expecting the final product to be much better than what we see in the render, owing to how badly over saturated the colours are.
This part of the city (air apartments) offers a lot more potential freedom in future designs. I sure hope something really happens here, it would make a much more interesting gateway to Adelaide from the south east. Perhaps fitting that the route to Melbourne has its own Melbourne like building.
AtD May 9th, 2005, 07:04 AM Very Melbourne!
Gotta wonder down there some time.

Kota, I was at the airport on Thursday but without a camera mate. Will be back this week though.
The ramp's well on its way but to be honest, it's a big lump of concrete that detracts from the rest of the building. I'm not sure exactly how funky you can get with ramps, but I think they've taken the cheap and nasty way out with this one and unfortunately it's had a negative effect.
The worst part is the side of the ramp above road level. Surely they could have had it as a mixture of glass and steel (in any possible way that would prevent cars etc going straight over) to allow for some sort of site line to the main building, but they're just dull concrete slabs.
Maybe they'll sex the whole thing up a bit through landscaping...
AG July 9th, 2005, 07:52 AM Sheer brilliance. Hopefully this helps to kickstart some further inner city activity rather than watching all the activity occurring in one or two parts of the city.
redstar July 9th, 2005, 12:34 PM this is one of my fav buildings in the city.... i love the square boxes at the top... so innovative

Yes I know. :)
Seriously people, please don't start new threads when old ones exist.
Will August 25th, 2005, 10:48 AM I was reading in the Saturday Advertiser that this building is actually two separate buildings. The two towers are joind by a glass walkway. I am wondering if someone (Culwulla) could clarify whether Air Apartments is actually one tower or two separate towers?
redstar August 25th, 2005, 11:00 AM i apologise for the inconvience, but isnt this building COMPLETED now??? why not change its name to #COMPLETED: Air Apartments......
and its to towers, theres another one at the back of the front one. joined by a number of walkways.

whats in that red thing above the drive through? a restaurant?
sam_L October 14th, 2005, 02:48 AM That is a massive improvement on what it previously was. It reminds me of the Scene Apartments here in Auckland. I think i like it.
