View Full Version : Why is the western part of Miami so ugly?

Miami is a city of contrasts. You have some very nice areas, mostly near the coast and several nice areas partly inland, like Coral Gables and Pinecrest. But one you get west of Coral Gables, and go west on Flagler, Bird, Coral Way, 8th street, it looks so ugly. Many times, it can look like a poorer country, like Peru. By contrast, west Broward is filled with beautiful, new housing developments, and new stores. Is this area, including westchester, simply poor and old? I tell you, most black areas in places like NY, DC, and Philadelphia look nicer! What's the deal with this area? I wish it could all be torn down and rebuilt.

It's called The American Housing Projects, hence the name 'The Projects nigguh'.
Though I'am not sure we are talking about the same thing?, you seem to be talking about NW Miami area where Liberty City meet.

The reason they are dirty, and old is becouse many low-wealth citizens live there. There cheap homes old too, that the governemt built for these people to sit on there ass and not work, buy drugs and be ghetto. This is also where the 1980's riots accur. Quite the stir for Miami, and it nick named Miami - Vice City.

Sorry if were not talking about the same place.

Actually, I am not talking about Liberty City and the like. Rather, places that parallel 8 street, Flagler, and Bird as you head out west after Coral Gables. These are not the worst areas in Miami, but for being "middle class" they are the ugliest that I have seen in the U.S.A. Places like Westchester, Sweetwater, are ugly as hell.

I wont respond to this thread becouse I dont want to sound steriotypic or racist. So sorry, this forum isnt open enough to talk over these issues. What I can say is that those buildings are older then the city of Miami itself. I'am talking buildings built in the 1900's!.

To a person like you, these places look old, ugly and decrepit. But to those just moving in from south america and the caribbean, they seem just right.

Lee has a point. There are some areas of Miami which are butt-ugly which really shouldn't be. Part of the reason, I think, is that Miami has extremely poor tree cover compared to other large american cities.

Not worth getting banned for.

I'm not a big fan of Sweetwater either... but i think the reason why those areas you mention are so ugly is cause they're all suburbs.

True about the lack of treecover. A little more of that would obscure the same sort of ugliness you see in other cities.

That said, I think much of Broward is butt-ugly.

Anyone here think that curbs and sidewalks add a level to the area? I feel places look really trashy without them.

I suggest you say what you think.Oh boy...please, be careful what you wish for.
This was such a (mostly) nice little forum where informed and educated people shared information and ideas on the things that they are passionate about, and hopefully, it will stay nearly the same. I'm all for intelligent dissenting opinion, and no one gets banned for that.
But when someone types that, "places that parallel 8 street, Flagler, and Bird as you head out west after Coral Gables" are "those buildings are older then the city of Miami itself." then someone has to call BS. The city of Miami was incorporated on July 28, 1896. What buildings west of Coral Gables were built before then?!?!?!
Please...
Meepy doesn't like my sarcasm, so I'll be direct. Meepy, please don't talk about things you don't know about. Just don't. No matter what Lee says! :)
That isn't censorship or mean-spirited, just good advice. We are all friends here. Just listen/read a bit more and stop spewing clearly nonsensical rantings of non-truth.

I don't see how this thread took such an ugly turn. It seemed to be a fair question o me. I've lived in the Sweetwater area for the last four years while attending FIU. The areas aren't so much ugly as they are repetitive. I think Ray Romano said it best when describing ugly twins - "One kind of ugly guy doesn't look so bad until you see the exact same ugliness following rihgt behind." The same can be said about Miami's suburbs. Miami has grown really fast, rather than the gradual growth present in other cities, for these reasons you don't see as much variety. There tends not to be beauty in monotony.

One of the other reasons I find Miami's poorer neighborhoods to be ugly is that every house has a front yard, back yard and fence. Many people don't take care of this and the neighborhoods tend to look shotty with overgrown yards, bent fences and cars parked on the lawns.

These are just some observations I've made in my years living there. Lucky for Miami though is that the city is growing and starting to out-shine its sprawling suburbs.

I dont think he meant that they were older than the city of Miami. I think he meant they have older homes than the city of Miami, and in many cases that is true.

Roark to tell you the truth, your a fucking self-centered ignorent and dispicable. You blow my mind in every aspect possible, and your better off talking in sarcasim. You have completly mis-interpeted what I type, and that is why you fail at life and probably fail at being a member of this forum.

If anything you are the one to keep his own shit in his head instead of typing it on a public forum. Your disrespectful, and ignorent, besides that you type like you have some type of handicap that keeps to from adding commas; periods; and some type of rational langauge where the reader can make sence of it without thinking your mentaly challenged. Sorry Roark, I have to lay the foundation for your ignorence in this 1 and only reply.

Moderators have allready told you to let a subject drop, for some reason you keep stiring it back up. With your mentality aside, you're part being of a someone who deosnt deserve to speak openly on a forum, you start problems with people you dont even know, and bring them to subjects which where never of that persons business.

I would love to add the fact how you take my metaphors so seriously as to think I actually ment that a house in Miami is older then Miami itself. Obviously someone in a fucking good state of mind would logicly think I'am being sarcastic and saying the building has a bit of age to it. But then again we are talking about someone with the name of 'Roark' who's state of mind is questionable.

I hope you take english classes to further improve your grammer, instead of using big words you cant even spell. Sure you can hit me with my low-fault knowledge in skyscrapers, but thats why I'am here to learn. The learning proccess would be alot easier without dickheads like you who have to put my name in everything bad, you influence hatred, and seriously you can get on peoples nerve easily. I could care less if a few people admire your work in the development section for providing them with knowledge over projects, since you are a developer dude of some type? if you say so right?. This has to be one of favorite forums of all time, and to have it smashed in my face by a prick is a warm welcome. No dont type a reply, most of your replys consist of mispelled words, talking about buildings with safety stickers, something about airplanes, and what not!. You set a new standard on forum inovation, I mean with this reply I could write a book. Not only have you stired me up, but many other members think your a prick. Say all you want about my posts being false, I least I post. All of your posts are about quotes on the other person and how there wrong, if your so smart as you say why dont you write a book or something?. But then again I leave myself to comments asking a man who cant even type up a 2 sentence reply correctly. My idea of you is a lonely self-centered child, who's past is probably fild with hatred and dismise. I feel sorry for you, and what ever it is you have gone trough, just keep that shit from me. Roark, maybe just once, once, you could prove me wrong in an aspect more then a skyscraper and how safety regulations mishap your life.

I dont hold much reputation on this forum to tell you to simply shut up, but then again I'am a simple person who just enjoys talking about Miami and it's ever developing projects. The next time you come around 1 of my threads over Miami's developments, please shoot yourself in the fucking face. - Thanks and best regards Meepy. Dont put my name in any of your replys ever again. <-- period.

yawn...
Oh, western dade, I don't think it's that bad. Suburban yes, but dense. Not as bad as Browards suburbs. At least there's still a grid with sidewalks and such in those neighborhoods. One of the stereotypes is that Cubans love to pave everything over. To the outside eye, this can be very grating. I've gotten used to it.

Really? Suburbs of other U.S. cities seem a lot nicer.

Furthermore, how old is the area west of the turnpike, a near bIRD rOAD?
