http://www.pindiplus.com
Rawalpindi, Islamabad's Twin City, is located in North East Pakistan and has a population of 1,406,214. It occupies the site of an old village inhabited by the Rawals, a tribe of Yogis. A railroad junction and an important industrial and commercial center, the city has an oil refinery, gasworks, an iron foundry, railroad yards, a brewery, sawmills, and factories making tents, textiles, hosiery, pottery, and leather goods.
Sikhs settled the area in 1765 and invited nearby traders to live in Rawalpindi. After the British occupied the Punjab (1849), it became a major British military outpost. In 1919 a peace treaty ending the Third Afghan War was signed by British and Afghan representatives at Rawalpindi.
The city, strategically located astride the road between the Punjab and Kashmir, is Pakistan's army headquarters. From 1959 to 1970, it was the interim capital of Pakistan. Six colleges affiliated with the University of Punjab, a polytechnic school, a police training institute, and an armed forces medical college are in Rawalpindi.

Sultan August 5th, 2004, 10:50 PM Rawalpinidi still needs to undergo a major re-design.. :)
hopefully in the near future, we'll see that :)
but its an awesome place to be !
cntower August 5th, 2004, 10:53 PM Of course it is; where do all the people from Islamabad go after 6 pm?
Islamabad is virtually dead by 8:00pm; either everyones at home or there out in Rawalpindi shopping, eating, shopping, watching movies, shopping, walking around, shopping. Did I forget to mention shopping? Everytime I ask someone what are you doing this evening; "Hum Pindi Jarray Hai; Mainy New T-Shirt Hareeddni Hai"
Sultan August 5th, 2004, 10:59 PM Islamabad is a diplomatic city, no wonder theres nothing happening there after 8 PM, i hope after we get the new cricket stadium there, and matches are played, we could expect more traffic in Islamabad.
but with Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, and soon Gwadar, people have enough places to chill at ..
cntower August 5th, 2004, 11:08 PM No matter what you do with Islamabad nothing will change; they tried Radio, TV, Newspaper even a TV show. Remember Chal Patto Isloo!
Sultan August 5th, 2004, 11:17 PM  Islamabad is a good place tho
cntower August 7th, 2004, 05:43 PM http://archnet.org/library/imgdownloader/jpg/53255/big/IAA14766.JPG
HasanB August 7th, 2004, 07:18 PM Im a really anti - pindi guy !! I know thats not going to go down well with you CNtower , but i think the place is a bit of a dump really, they do need a re-do but at tleast they could maintain things, its one of the dirtiest places ive been too. Im sure its vibrant, but places like lahore and Karachi theyre vibrant and fairly modern and ... you know what i mean ... wtvr im just dont like it at all. Im just going to run now b4 CNtower kills me !! lol :runaway:
Sultan August 7th, 2004, 07:26 PM Yes, i agree, the city needs to be re-planned, and should be built on modern lines, with steel and glass buildings to beautify, along with good roads, and a good infrastructure, its not hard, if they start planning now, they can make it a beautiful place in 10 years time.
HasanB August 7th, 2004, 08:28 PM Yes thats right, the first thing that needs to be done is the roads, look at Lahore for example the roads there are brilliant now, theyve widened them and re laid some and its excellent. In Pindid if you get heavy rains the roads disintegrate into dirt (some of them). Then youve got these very ugly looking shops right upto the streets its just very messy and chaotic there. It needs complete re planning.
cntower August 7th, 2004, 11:27 PM It dosen't need re-planning; the majority of those "ugly" shops are illegal; they aren't suppose to be there in the first place. Of course there are those that are legal and look like pieces of trash as well because people don't wanna maintain it.
cntower August 10th, 2004, 12:39 AM You people have any more pictures of pindi by any chance? Couldn't find many...these were hard enough to find...

HasanB August 18th, 2004, 09:21 PM Even though its a vibrant place, these pictures especially the 2 showing the streets of the city just emphasize why i really do not like this city.
cntower August 18th, 2004, 10:13 PM That's true; Pindi is really falling apart yet right beside it Islamabad is growing into a good sized city which has been planned properly.

listen up mate~! i've been living in isloo fer a long time n seriously if i'm free i would rather stay in the cool n calm streets of isloo rather than getting my self into the jamming road of rwp. No doubt rwp is a good place and has got all the recreational+entertainment facilities but most of the isloo ppl dont have time going thr....n abt the T-shirt reference u gave.....i can tell wut class of ppl u have been hanging into lately.....lol....
wut do u expect the ppl in islambad to do....thr r juss a few points to hangout n we dont get the time to daily hangout....itz an administrative city....ppl work on 8am to 5pm jobs....rest of the time they either go to health club parks joggin tracks etc or rest at home.....they only get time on the weekend n that is when u have rush around the city....
plus what do u blame islambad fer.....this city has a large population of ppl that come from various others cities....more than half of the pathan n pakhtoon go to nwfp on the weekend and so goes fer the rest of the punajabi'z too....now when no one'z like to sit back n hangout in the city than who do u expect to b in the city...?
NewYork-wala June 16th, 2005, 12:55 AM I had a great time in Pindi... The new food street is pretty nice. Its near Nawaz Sharif Park.. And lots of nice shops and reseraunts have come up in Sadar. Besides the KFC there is now a Texas Steak house which has great pizza aswell, and a Subway... Some parts of Pindi are garbage but the defense areas as always amazing.. The best defense one was the Askari Villa's which is near Janda area, where President Musharaf was almost killed the second time. Wide streets and very peacful with very nice houses,. Looks like Bahria but not as much landscaping..
NewYork-wala June 16th, 2005, 12:58 AM The nicest recreating places are in Islamabad. You got bolwling, billiards, scenery, gyms, spas etc. For good food though, go to Pindi.

Well I never said that was a bad thing; other than Jinnah Supermaket in F7 and some other small cool hangouts and clubs in Islamabad there really isn't much to do here. Again it's not a bad thing just putting it how it is...

vc15nets November 24th, 2005, 02:04 PM No disrespect to Pindi... but it needs a major facelift. But I guess thats why they built Islamabad.
asfar001 November 25th, 2005, 04:32 AM rawalpindi is getting sort of a facelift. first of all if you go there you will realise that mall road which runs through the centre of the city is being widened into a huge wide highyway type road. secondly muree road the second main road of the city has already been widened up. mureer chowk , is another area which needs attention due to everyday traffic jams...over there the government has planned to build a flyover which i dnt know wether the construction has even begun or not. other than that we all know about the DHA and bahria town projects in pindi which are expanding the city to the south. so over all the city is getting an uplift....you guys make it seem as if its a sick city but in real its pretty nice and clean.
Intoxication November 25th, 2005, 02:31 PM ...plus muree road is probably one of the first in pakistan to have a bus lane.
NewYork-wala November 25th, 2005, 08:59 PM I liked Pindi.. Some of the areas are crap, but there are lots of nice places aswel.. The food street is rather nice.
Mall road has been widened and it looks pretty good..
What I think the city needs is foot paths, better public transport, better traffic controls, and better parking.
The major shopping areas are a mess, sadar for example has TO many cars, and too many shoppers all plying the same street. They need to streamline the traffic, perhaps making some of the street of limits to traffic. They can also build a large parking lot to facilitate shoppers so they dont have to drive through the mess inside, same with Raja bazar.
Also, Pindi pollution has gotten really bad for some reason, too many cars. They need to promote pedestrian traffic through footpaths.
Otherwise, Pindi is great place.. Good food, relatively nice people, and interesting place to walk around in.
UnitedPakistan November 25th, 2005, 10:05 PM Rawalpindi quite honestly is the worst city i have been in. On my way from Lahore to Islamabad we can in through Rawalpindi and i thought i was in hell! It was a rainy day as well and they were a lot of mudslides and what not. It was just damn terrible....
asfar001 November 25th, 2005, 10:57 PM go to rawalpindi with your eyes open united, maybe ur views wuld change. its seriously not as bad as u think.
JADI November 25th, 2005, 11:54 PM Anyone has pictures of the new shopping mall on Bank road?
JADI November 25th, 2005, 11:59 PM I think someone shud post pictures of RWP cantt, Gulraiz colony, chaklala, Bahria, and Mall Rd. In my opinion very nice residential areas wid large houses cud easily compete wid most houses in ISB!
UnitedPakistan November 26th, 2005, 01:15 AM go to rawalpindi with your eyes open united, maybe ur views wuld change. its seriously not as bad as u think.
I have been there...Infact it was olny last year :bash:
swerveut November 26th, 2005, 02:58 AM ...plus muree road is probably one of the first in pakistan to have a bus lane.
There are already lots of roads in Karachi with Bus lanes. Pity the buses arent that keen on using them.
shaz November 26th, 2005, 05:22 PM i think rawalpindi is actually beautiful because of its ancient feel and look to it. and we cant forget raja bazaar...the best bazaar in pakistan!! no shopping mall comes close to it!

Metropole May 8th, 2007, 03:48 PM Rawalpindi is the only city in Pakistan that I've lived in other than Karachi. I was there in 1971 going to St. Mary's Academy. It was a beautiful school on a hill.
I remember the '71 war while in Pindi. It was an exciting time. From where we lived we could hear the bombs dropping at the airport and the anti-aircraft guns firing from across the road. We could see the red shells going over our heads. We had the V and W shaped trenches to jump into and all the glass windows had to be covered with newspapers stuck on with a paste made from flour and water. We were sorry that the war ended so soon.
Rawalpindi is a charming city with a lot more character than Islamabad.

This cinema (don remember the name) is located right in front of AWT building and next to AFIC, soon it will be demolished as it's been declared unsafe. What I heard from my sources is that CBR (Cantonment Board Rwp) will lease out the land for 30 years to McDonalds Pvt. Ltd., so we will see a capacious park and yet another McDonalds (company owned).

R u joking??? This is perhaps the most interesting colonial building in Rawalpindi. I agree with Pakia this place should be renovated and could be used as an art gallery, Museum, restaurant, shop, club, library etc.
It would be complete insanity to tear down this building to replace it with a MacDonald Restaurant.

But does anyone know of any company within Pakistan that renovates, restores old structures. Wonder if all the past renovation is done by foreign companies only. There might be some institution concerning old heritage buildings in Pakistan.
If not, I might have to start such company there.
Other countries esp. many asian nations had successful programs where big companies, NGOs have adopted or taken under their wing some particular old building in need of rescue and done wonders with it.
Hope someone wises up to such things in Pakistan too, instead of letting beautiful bldgs rot.

Pakia March 19th, 2008, 10:00 PM ^^ RAWALPINDI WAR CEMETERY, Pakistan
Location:
Rawalpindi War Cemetery, situated in the cantonment area, can be reached by taxi from Islamabad Airport or from any hotel in the capital city. It is part of the Protestant Cemetery known as Gorah Qabrastaan (The Foreign Cemetery). The nearest landmark is the Combined Military Hospital (C.M.H). A taxi driver would take a visitor to the Old Cemetery entrance because it is not possible to enter the War Cemetery from the Civil Cemetery. One should ask to be taken to the rear corner of the Cemetery where the War Cemetery entrance is situated. The War Cemetery occupies a triangle shaped corner of the main cemetery, but is fenced off from it. A taxi driver should be asked to take one to Gorah Qabrastaan in Lalkurti. There are no C.W.G.C. direction signs to this Cemetery.
Historical Information:
Rawalpindi War Cemetery contains 257 Commonwealth burials of the First World War, connected mainly with the operations on the North-West Frontier. There are also 100 burials from the Second World War.

I don't see as big an issue as you're making it out to be with both of your comments. Especially the 2nd one! Its has nothing to do with the fact that fair skin is preferred throughout the subcontinent or for that matter of fact, throughout the Non-white world. What is so wrong with putting wigs of different colours?? If you look closely you'll notice that a black big is also being used! Anyways coming to the statues, most available statues are white, so you can't really blame the guy.

Intoxication June 1st, 2008, 10:15 AM I agree with trappy, it should be called the garison city. Rawalpindi has its own identity and thats the way it should be....
Yeah, I agree! Rawalpindi is WAY, WAY, WAY older THAN Islamabad. Its one the oldest cities of Pakistan, its history dates back to thousands of years and it became known as the "Garrison City" during the times of the British, long before Islamabad was even created! Islamabad has only been existent for 40 odd years, thats it!
Rawalpindi city, also known as Pindi, has a history spread over several millenniums extending to the ancient times corresponding with the decaying period of Buddhism to the invasions of the Macedonians and then to the dawn of the Muslims era. The long spells of darkness overcast the history of the religion as well as the city before Muslims conquest.
Archaeologists believe that a distinct culture flourished on this plateau as far back as 3000 years.

Besides this is not American money, the economy is doing well because the government is collecting taxes, paying its bills and builiding up a F/X account. The US money goes directly to the army.

Besides this is not American money, the economy is doing well because the government is collecting taxes, paying its bills and builiding up a F/X account. The US money goes directly to the army.

Sad comment. Somewhat accurate however. There other minorities who probably feel the same way sadly.
Tragedy of Pakistan.

Well he's an Idiot if he thinks that Pakistan isn't his country just because he's a Christian. I'm disappointed in him! Hence, I used this smiley>>>>

I dont really think that inorities arent treated well enough in Pakistan..Its not our fault If christians prefer to be chooras and not study is it?Well I do know this guy who is the Art director of an advertising agency..Pakistan is full of oppurtunities if you want ot avail 'em..And that reminds me that when CJ was being removed the person who was to be the CJ was a hindu Rana Bhagwan Das I guess so yea I dont really think that minorities arent given their rights..Pakistan is probably one of the few countries who have it written in their constitution that Every person has the right to practice his religion/faith..
