Ah yes, one of the best things that can boost the aesthetics and ecology of Metro Cebu would be reforesting the mountains. Can't the city or government establish a protected zone at the nearby mountains. In 20 years that would make a picture perfect scene with a mature Cebu skyline below.

Not entirely correct. There are ateneos in Spain & Italy. More common in Anglophone countries, including the US, is the word Atheneum. They both refer to the same meaning, that is, an educational institution.

Cebu's Geology

Cebu island was formed in the so-called Carbon period, some 350 million years ago. During this period, large shallow marshes were formed with abundant vegetation. The rotting plants and trees in these marshes turned into peat and later into coal. Cebu island still has large coal reserves, the basis for Cebu’s coal mining industry of today.

Deposits of shell and eroded sand formed the basis for the limestone, which makes up most of Cebu. This limestone was, over the ages, pushed upwards, making it possible to find today sea fossils high in Cebu’s mountains. This pushing up continues today. It is caused by the fact that the Philippine Plate, on which most of the country lies, is slowly diving under the Eurasian Plate of the mainland of Asia.

Today’s Cebu island is characterized by steep mountains without any substantial forest cover. Highest peaks reach over 1,000 meters. The island is 300 km long and 35 km wide. High, steep mountains, short distances and lack of forest cover mean that rainwater runs fast to the sea, causing substantial erosion.

The island has vast copper, gold and coal reserves which are mined mainly in the central part.

Demand for second homes, influx of students prop up condo market (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/business/demand-second-homes-influx-students-prop-condo-market)
Sun.Star
Sunday, February 6, 2011

WITH almost all of its units sold, a condominium project at the Asiatown IT Park is expected to turn over its units to buyers by the last quarter of this year.

Cebu Landmasters Inc. president Jose Soberano III told reporters recently that the Asia Premier residences are 95 percent sold.

Of the 88 units targeted for the upper-mid and high-end market, only four are left.

The 17-story residential condominium is Cebu Landmasters’ first condominium project.

It is also behind the San Josemaria Villages in the towns of Balamban and Minglanilla and the cities of Toledo and Talisay.

Soberano said that once they turn over their units, they will be the first residence to operate in the area.

Despite the many condominium projects sprouting around Cebu City, he is confident the market is still open for more, saying there are many businessmen from the far towns and other provinces who are looking for second homes in the urban area.

Aside from doing business, he said many of them have children who study in Cebu. He added that overseas Filipino workers are keen on investing their earnings in real estate.

While he acknowledged that there are many developers building condominium projects, he said they will be adding to the healthy competition.

He recently launched a joint venture with Riasjac Development Corp. to build
One Baseline Place within the Baseline Complex in Juana Osmeña, a 16-story condominium project with studio and one-bedroom units. This is for the middle to upper-middle market.

They expect to start selling their units by June, although he said they are accepting letters of intent from interested buyers so they can prioritize them once they are ready to start selling.

Aside from this, he revealed they are eyeing two more vertical projects in the next two years.

so its really nature that made Cebu barren and less forested in the first place. but still, Cebu should continue planting trees! :okay:

Bai Adik, I don't necessarily believe that it's naturally barren. The article says that today, it is barren but it doesn't claim that its natural (not man-made). I believe that our hillsides were forested before (there are trees that thrive on limestoney soil) but the deforestation was already done even before the Americans came, and possibly even before the Spaniards came. But I am fairly convinced humans were responsible (especially the kaingin method practiced by natives which can easily clear hundreds of hectares in a day's worth of burning).

To be a stickler again, but it may be worth correcting, the article quoted by bai Slemarken is misleading. As far as I know and have read about this, there was no CEBU or Philippines 350 MYA during the Carboniferous Period(not Carbon). The material in the earth's crust that became the Philippines and Cebu in particular, may have been formed at this age, but these were probably subducted and sumberged under the sea at some point and part of the continental or oceanic crust underwater. Cebu and the Philippines only became what they are now when they were thrust out of the sea as recently as 50 to 20 MYA. Our islands are very young and recent, island-age speaking hehe.

That said, I don't believe we should continue making these kinds of excuses.
We should do our best to replant and reforest! If you look at that remaining 4 or so square kilometers of remnant primary growth forest (original forest cover of the island) in Tabunan crossed by transcentral highway, that is what our mountains used to look like! Not barren.

re: forest cover
well the good side of not having thick forest cover is that NPAs and other insurgent groups cannot hide in the mountains. i believe thats one of the factors why we are among the provinces declared insurgency-free

It's logical but a rather poor excuse not to reforest. The benefits of a forest far outweigh the NPA. I believe even with a forest cover, it would still be rather easy to find them in Cebu because of the long but narrow shape of the island.

^^@Bai Baka, me too I used to think abaout it nga how did they know of Cebu's soil composition that time where Cebu is still under water but of the technology now, their studies of our soil composition, they will know even before the Philippines is still under water... Nakit an ra nako sa Nat geo...ehehe

Btw, it's not an excuse. I posted that coz it's true that Cebu is made of limestones... I just posted the truth... However the truth about limestones doesn't mean that I'm stating that humans are not responsible of the deforestation.

Once again, we're the victim of such human irresponsible acts like the Alta Vista and floodings in Pardo and I'm in one with those groups who wants to restore those natural greeneries of the Cebu mountains. And with the 5 thousand (so far) trees that I've personally planted of the different tree planting activities that I've joined since 2003, I will still continue to plant more trees co aI believe that I can help..;)

But still the truth is, Cebu is made of Limestones and some people are irresponsible not thinking of the effects of what they're doing:yes:

confused eh?:D

An of Ivanc's reply... He only stated an advantage but he doesn't mean we shouldn't reforest anymore. We don't know, he's also active in tree planting activities...:okay:

well the good side of not having thick forest cover is that NPAs and other insurgent groups cannot hide in the mountains. i believe thats one of the factors why we are among the provinces declared insurgency-free

Not barren.

It's logical but a rather poor excuse not to reforest. The benefits of a forest far outweigh the NPA. I believe even with a forest cover, it would still be rather easy to find them in Cebu because of the long but narrow shape of the island.

hala naa napod! mao ni ang explanation nga akong gusto i-express..salamat bai baka! nindot jud ning naa kay stock knowledge oi, matarong jud nimog explain...paet jud ning dili ka himasa oi, tapolan jud kayo ko magbasa basa, akong utok permi motipas og laing butang, kana pa jung mga dili importante og way lami! wahahaha!

I'm from Lapu Lapu, and I pass by the old Mandaue-Mactan bridge each time I go to work.

I wish I had a digicam and take shots of Cebu City from the bridge. The skyline amidst the background of mountains is so majestic. In fact, ganahan gud ko everytime na mo kapyot sa jeep or mo lingkod sa front seat just to see that view. :)

Bai ako pod taga Opon. But what's even better is boarding the ferry boat going to pier 3! early morning, noontime and late afternoons especially!

dapat ila sab unta na gipurchase ang lot 1 para ma square na ila mall. then mag-butang sab sila ug entrance sa side sa road leading to city hall, hayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy hope ang kanang road leading to the lapulapu city hall dapat ma aspalto na sa city government ug butangan ug sidewalk, the last time i was there sus grabe ka bati sa dalan ug abog oi. well however that was about a many years ago na hahahahhahahah. then ang kanang gym sa kilid sa city hall mura sab ug ngil-ad kaayo ni nga structure ay. maayu pa idemolish na nila ug buhatan na lang ug mini plaza , mangita na lang sila ug lain nga site, i may suggest kanang lot luyo anang menzi nga factory, then ang kanang plaza duol sa simbahan sa lapulapu, dapat ila sab na panindoton oi. kabati gayud ug hugaw , ang muelle osmena dapat i modernize kay bati kaau, ang kanang mga streets duol sa market dapat butangan ug sidewalk ug aspaltohon, ug tanan squatters ila na ibutang sa usa ka site kanang layu sa mga resorts. sus tanan mga friends ni kuya-mga austrialyano there are 5 of them mibakasyon sa cebu during the sinulog mi comment gayud nga nindot kuno kaayo ang mga resorts sa cebu pero bati kuno kaayo ang sorroundings kay makahadlok kay daghan kuno settlement ug hugaw. kanus-a pa man ni maanindot ang lapulapu oi.

wala lagi ang horizons 101 sa table na mas chure man to

basin gani ang horizons 101 = buena prima. hehe

basta, di man gyud kapugngan na magka 70+ storeys ang cebu in the future due to our limited land area.

how about the rumored picar development in cebu?

Coz Horizons is a Cebu Based development... Nag kuha ra tingali siyag data sa Manila Developers...

Esepen nyo nalang, to to uhouhouho!!!

... so you're saying bai na "Mervyn Bunique" is not a cebuano who is biased for cebu but someone from the capital who has insider info of certain projects for cebu ...:nuts:

Dili biased. Wapa tingali siyay kalibutan unsay nahitabo diri sa Cebu.
Kung tua ka sa Manila IMO wala gyud ig dungog kaayo ang local developers sa Cebu nga mo tukod of skyscraper gawas lang sa Crown Regency ni King nga naila na kaayo aside from that wala na.

i see... nice deduction. kay if he/she is cebuano (probably biased in favor of cebu) he/she would have included horizons 101 in that list.

so meaning, either trip lang talaga niya mang-good time sa mga cebuanos or maybe he/she knows a bit of something that we don't.

a big possibility

^^ Pero siguro kung skyscrapers nasad ako pirme madunggan murag wala nalang sad nako kay Cebu nagud nah.

hahaha! ETYH? LOL! :D :D :D

pero bitaw the change in the cityscape of Cebu has been very big. Pero in the long run what's good about this is that the Philippines is AGAIN after 2 decades of political blunders gearing up to face the world in competition. It's good to know na finally, ning arang-arang najud ang Pilipinas and we're going up the food chain. We're booming as a country in general and growth has now been distributed quite evenly amongst many provinces. All the cities in the country are performing well and LGU's are doing their best attract big chunks of foreign investment. Dili nalang kay ang cityscape sa Cebu ang nausab kundi ang uban sad and it is good news. Hopefully in the years mawala na ang bad image sa Pilipinas ug we become recognized by the world as a progressive economy and an economic dragon in the making.

Dili jud ko makaingon nga ang Cebu ra ang amazing kundi the whole country itself from Batanes to Jolo is astonishing. Keep the good news coming in.

And Cebu will not be left behind by Pattaya, Penang, Ho Chi Minh and Surabaya anymore. Since then nga buhi pa ang CvC diri sa SSC, og nana gani mo himo og thread nga CebuvsPenang or CebuvsChiangmai or CebuvsSurabaya, mag labad gyud among ulo ato kung unsa among ipa kita nga pic nga naay cluster of hi-rises pero puhon, we will already be considered as one with those accomplished 2nd tier cities in our neighboring SEA nations :okay:

I wholeheartedly agree. My ex-boss, an American, said that Metro Cebu is one of those few cities in the world which is so strategically located that it has everything---business, leisure, home, adventure, international/national connections---just within a few minutes or hours of each other.

And my present boss, a German, said she left her country, went around the world, but fell in love with Cebu that she immediately decided to settle here. She even wanted to buy a lot na but can't because foreigners are not allowed to buy land. She's been here for 3 years and her husband, for more than 5 years.

This shows that Cebu got what it takes to be a world-renowned city. I just hope that improvement in the local government (which I believe is really happening here) will match the pace of the ultra-fast developments in the province.
