Mr. Sepulveda said both Oikonomos and Hilton Worldwide have committed not to divulge the reasons for the termination. He and Mr. Arias separately assured that the hotel has been performing well despite adverse developments, such as the Manila hostage crisis that killed Hong Kong tourists last year.

“The hotel is doing okay. It’s not losing any money. But it can still improve,” Mr. Sepulveda said, without elaborating on occupancy figures.

Mr. Arias said the hotel suffered from cancellation of bookings shortly after the Manila hostage crisis, but this was only for a brief period.

“Everybody was affected. But it was only brief. We’re very bullish now because the prognosis for the travel industry is good,” he said.

The hotel, which had brought back the Hilton brand to the Philippines after a 17-year hiatus, is a five-star boutique resort with 246 rooms, including 74 spa suites, in Punta Engaño, Mactan Island, Cebu.

Aside from managing the hotel, Movenpick will also provide services to The Residences I and II condominium towers beside the hotel.

Mr. Arias said Oikonomos and Movenpick started negotiating seriously even before the contract with Hilton was terminated.

“We had to do our homework. There were several others that were interested in running the hotel,” he said.

Movenpick was earlier reported to have bagged the deal to operate the Hotel & Convention Centre KLIA in Malaysia which is slated to open by early 2014.

The 333-room upscale hotel is said to be located near the Kuala Lumpur International Airport and F1 Sepang International Circuit.

Wow 5 hectares? This place is pretty huge. I like the facade of the place, looks inviting. Probly add more foliage though and an outdoor mist spray for that rainforest-y effect.

Mao gyud. Gubot pa sa lukot nang traffic diha kay gamay kaau ug dan. However, I have a strong feeling na ang developer i-expand niya ang dalan or mag provide ug space para sa expansion...remember, dako baya kaau na na area.

I'm not sure if it's SM gyud ha...rumors ra baya ni. Ma saturate na ang area sa kadaghan ug malls if that's the case.

Ganahan unta ko na lifestyle center ni...somewhat like Parkmall. Nice kaau baya kay nag-atubang sa Cebu City.

Then maybe butangan ug library, museum, playground, etc. kay duol baya kaau sa mga schools. :)

SAN PEDRO, LAGUNA -- The Rustan’s retail group will continue the expansion of its supermarket chain, planning to open 10-12 supermarkets over the next three years.

With the launch of the ninth Shopwise branch in San Pedro, Laguna yesterday and one more Shopwise branch slated to open in Cebu City in the third quarter, the Tantoco-led retail firm is expecting a double-digit growth this year

The president of the Rustan Supercenters, Bienvenido V. Tantoco III, said the company expects to double its size in two to three years and compete with other big players in the industry.

“We are focused in [market] expansion and differentiation,” Mr. Tantoco said.

Meanwhile, Frances J. Yu, vice-president for marketing, told reporters the new Shopwise outlet is the biggest in terms of total land area.

The new Shopwise branch in Laguna boasts of 4,500 square meters (sq. m.) of retail space including a “mini-mall,” out of 12,000 sq. m. of land.

“It is a new generation Shopwise store. It has more modern facilities, wide aisles, and even a ’50s style diner,” Ms. Yu said.

morag dili na farfetched na idea bai.. na whenever SM will buy or lease that property basin maapil ang Keppel.

Speaking of Shell bai.. its lease contract with Chevron ( formerly Mobil property) had already expired more than 10 years ago. Shell decided to enter a contract with Petron to use their depot services rather than extend the lease. This is the reason why you see Shell tankers in Petron depot.

For the Keppel bai.. i guess its a management decision to close the shiprepair facility since the Keppel group consolidated the company's operations to its bigger facility in Batangas. The decision was partly triggered by very restive workforce in the Cebu site.

If its true that SM will either get to lease the former Shell depot and part of the Keppel Property then i believe this is an exciting development in Lapu-Lapu City. :okay:

Nice Ideas.
1. The statue of Lapu-Lapu can be an iconic landmark similar to statue of Liberty. After all, Lapu-Lapu is the first and only triumphant Filipino hero.
2. The ferry service can be expanded in so many ways. It can actually be a base to bring visitors to different islands in Cebu much like Aldeguer's Island Banca Cruises.
3. I hope developments in this area will also prompt the City gov't to address the traffic issue in City market and surrounding area. As an HUC, the city should seriously consider letting go of those tricycles and replace with multicabs.:):):)

Spotlight on Brian Lim – CEO Pyroworks Philippines

Brian Lim - PyroworksListening to Brian Lim talk, fireworks seem to go up sky high, filling the world with magical sights and sounds. That’s because pyrotechnics is Brian’s passion, though he is a lot of other things besides, making him such a vibrant and colorful personality.

He’s a sportsman, into extreme sports, like air soft gun (of which he is the external vice president of ASG Philippines, based in Cebu), karting, flag football and wakeboarding.

Brian is also into organizing sports events. As a member of the Cebu City Sports Commission, he organized last year’s Summer Sports Fest (among the sports: flag football, boxing, baseball, soccer, mixed martial arts, chess), which he hopes to be an annual event to become bigger yearly and make Cebu a sports destination and trigger sports tourism for the city.

If Brian is serious about ”play,” he’s also serious as a businessman: a director of Rose Pharmacy; and the CEO of Salon de Rose nationwide (it has 14 branches, with three more coming up).

He is also the owner/manager of Pyroworks, a business he set up at age 18, as a requirement for graduation in college (BA in entrepreneurship from CIE), for which he was given the ”Entrepreneur of the Year” award. If all that is not enough to keep him busy, he is also into other businesses (one of them, online gaming).

But Brian’s love has always been fireworks. Born in New York City, he finished high school in San Diego, California, but moved to Cebu for his college studies. He said he was always fascinated by fireworks and had “an intense curiosity about how to make those kinds of colors, those kinds of effects.”

At age nine or 10, he would visit factories in Mactan to have custom-made fireworks for him.

He had a special piggy bank just for these purchases so he could make his own fantastic show in December. Fireworks, he explains, is not firecrackers.

The latter is more for explosive, with a higher explosive content and is ground based; whereas pyrotechnics are more for light and color-emitting devices with a low explosive content.

For Pyroworks, he says, “I choreograph and design the shows like a painter painting beautiful pictures and the night sky is my canvas to tell a fantastic story.”

To have one of these shows, he makes an ocular inspection of the site, uses safe and reliable professional equipment launchers, with an in depth knowledge of the effects he wants to use.

The entire crew, he adds, must be well-trained and follow a set of safety practices: No shortcuts because “at the end of the day fireworks are still explosives, beautiful type of explosives.”

Aside from fireworks, Brian loves music, which serves him in pyromusicals. “Fireworks have been done for centuries, but pyromusicals is a new type of art form in which you synchronize the music with the fireworks,” he explains.

He listens to classical as well as rock music and incorporates the type of music to the theme of the fireworks display he creates. Pyroworks, he discloses, does close to 200 shows a year in and out of Cebu. He organized the SM Pyrofest, which had its third annual event early this year.

Brian’s passion for fireworks is such that he has landed in the Guiness World Book of Records for launching 125,801 rockets in under 30 seconds on May 8, 2010, during the Cebu Summer Sporsfest. The precious record, done by Dr. Roy Lawry in Plymouth, UK, was 57,999 rockets in under 30 seconds. Brian is very active in the international symposium of fireworks which happens every two years.

In 2010 in Portugal, he gave a speech and a presentation of the record of his Guiness feat. (Incidentally, he also goes abroad for beauty salon symposiums.)

He was very much in the news last December when his fireworks were confiscated by the city government. Of that, Brian says, “It was quite a challenge. You are faced with this type of challenges but I just try to move on with a positive attitude. I want to be in business and Pyroworks is only a stepping stone to other ventures.”

At age 29, Brian has been too busy to think of settling down and raising a family. A very nice, very eligible young man, the lucky girl will probably need to catch him up in the sky, when he fills the world with wondrous sights and sounds.

We hope that this will be materialized this year..

I guess they opted to have above surface parking rather than the basement parking for a reason.... thats why we dont see them digging the way others do. :D

its much cheaper to have parking above ground than the basement...no need to worry, it doesn't mean that when there is no basement, the foundation is already weak or is not rooted deeply underground...:)
