Known to many as the World's Famous Arena is Madison Square Garden. The place is located between 31st St, 33rd St, 7th Ave, and 8th Ave. This arena can seat 19,763 people in at a maxium. This place has been home to NY Knicks (Knickerbockers), NY Liberty, and NY Rangers. Of course some may never fully accept it due to the fact that it replaced the terminal building for Penn Station back in 1968 when it was razed three years ealier. The nickname MSG comes from the hype that the fans give here when seeing games at the arena hence what this salt tends to give. The founding of this place even gave a the name for a local sports network known as MSG Network, which televises most of the games at MSG as well as the NY Mets and NY/NJ Metrostars. Today's owner of MSG is Mike Dolan, who owns Cablevision. MSG also houses the Paramount Theater, which has been known for giving plays as well as talk shows. On the 7th Ave side is an annexing building known as 2 Penn Plaza, which has offices as well as resturaunts such as The Garden Bar & Grill and Play by Play Resteraunt. Of course, MSG itself has Nick's Steakhouse, which can be seen on the 33rd St side. It can be easily accessed at Penn Station, which is below it by the 1, 2, 3, A, C, E trains of the subway as well from NJ Light Rail, PATH, and Amtrak. MSG is also, only a few blocks in from the Westside Hwy (NY 9A).

The location of the building can't be beat, but personally I don't care for the looks of it. Also, it seems like most of the hype comes from its name and not much else. Most other arenas in the U.S. have a more modern desigen, greater capacity, and nicer architecture. I give it a 5.0.

What does it cost to go and see an NBA or NHL match at this stadium? Is it difficult to get a ticket?

Do they still have boxing there. I have seen old documentaries on boxing and this stadium's name popped up occasionally.

Quite simply a tragedy that this 'arena' was built. Look at the madness at what was destroyed. Some good came out of the bad though.

"Destruction

After a renovation covered some of the grand columns with plastic and blocked off the spacious central hallway with a new ticket office, Lewis Mumford wrote critically in the New Yorker in 1958 that "nothing further that could be done to the station could damage it". History was to prove him wrong. Under the presidency of Pennsylvania Railroad's Stuart T. Saunders (who later headed ill-fated Penn Central Transportation), the above-ground components of this structure (the platforms are below street level) were demolished in 1964, without disrupting the essential day-to-day operations, to make way for present-day Madison Square Garden, along with two office towers.

Four eagles salvaged from the station currently reside on the Market Street Bridge in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania across from that city's 30th Street Station. Another is located at the Long Island Rail Road station in Hicksville, New York.

The demolition of such a well-known landmark, and its replacement by a mediocre slab of real estate, were widely deplored, and are often cited as catalysts for the architectural preservation movement in the United States, and for laws restricting such demolition. Within the decade, Grand Central Terminal was protected under the city's new landmarks preservation act -- a protection which was upheld by the courts in 1978, after a challenge by Grand Central's owner, Penn Central.

The outcry over the loss of Penn Station prompted activists to question the "development scheme" mentality that was also cultivated by New York's "master builder", Robert Moses (although the cash-strapped railroad, not Moses, was actually responsible for the demolition). Moses' plans for a Lower Manhattan Expressway were scrapped due to public protests and a rejection of the plan by the city government.

In the longer run, the sense that something irreplaceable had been lost contributed to the erosion of confidence in Modernism itself and its sweeping forms of urban renewal, and thus strengthened interest in historic preservation. Comparing the new and the old Penn Station, architectural historian Vincent Scully once wrote, "One entered the city like a god, one scuttles in now like a rat."

I can't explain why, but I'd thought MSQ was significantly older that 1968. Looks decent but nothing special as an arena goes.

I'm much more impressed bt the old station I'm afraid.

The arena itself is awesome...steeped with history and in a great location.

...yet I still can't get over it being built where the beautiful Penn station once stood but you can't blame the arena for the shortsightedness of humans :mad2:

History is the important word here. Knowing how many events have gone on inside MSG's walls is what makes it so great. However, with that being said, the arena is not that great. It's not near as nice aesthetically or functionally as many of the new arenas.

Then again, neither is Wrigley Field, Yankee Stadium, Fenway Park, and more.

I guess what I'm saying is that, from a purely historical standpoint, it's a 9 or 10. From aesthetics and functional purposes, it ranks very low.

The fact that it's in the middle of NYC gives it more points though, I suppose.

Eh, 6, maybe 7, overall.

It would be difficult to say something positive about its looks, or to put it another way; its damn ugly. And when you look at the masterpeace they killed to build this, it enough to make you cry...

Still, the Gerden serves it purpose and had proven to be very popular both with sports and other arengements...For looks, I would give it a 4, but for use, i think an 8....so, i guess thats a 6 i total??

Do they still have boxing there. I have seen old documentaries on boxing and this stadium's name popped up occasionally.
On Monday I went to a Knicks game there, and it cost me $244.50 for sitting in the 100's section, though this is the price for one ticket and without including the service charge. Even though you can get Knicks tickets more easily, they are still pretty expensive. I am not very familiar with the ticket prices for the Rangers. However, you should look at the websites for the seating charts of the Kincks (http://www.nba.com/knicks/tickets/arena.html), Liberty (http://www.wnba.com/liberty/tickets/msg_seating_price_chart.html), and Rangers (http://www.newyorkrangers.com/). I do believe that the Golden Gloves Match is still being held there, which is boxing. Of course another famous event at the Garden is the National Westminister Dog Show, which is held there annually.

BobDaBuilder

^^^^^

That is very pricey. The players are on pretty high wages so I suppose it figures.

The Dog Show might be more in my price bracket. You would think that the dogs work for practically free.

December 30th, 2005, 10:47 PM
The other reason why ticket prices are so high is also b/c of the fact that MSG sits in Manhattan and the property taxes are pretty high, which is why ticket prices for the Knicks, Rangers, and Liberty are among the highest in their leagues regaurdless to how much the players want.

I got the train from Toronto to Penn station. When I came out and saw Madison Square Gardens I was shocked by how rubbish it looked. New York is an amazing city, Madison Square Gardens is nothing compared to most New York buildings. It's just a concrete circle. It's not even big. I guess it's the history of sporting events that makes it famous, not the actual building.

I only gave it an 8 b/c of the fact that it did replace Penn Station and that ticket prices are too high. I will admit that MSG won't win a beauty contest, but it is still tends to be on the top of great venues. In ariel shots, it tends to fit in with the city than when it's shown at street level.

MSG may have an ugly exterior, but the atmosphere when you watch a Knicks game there can't be beat (and I have been to many arenas). Unlike other arenas, where there are multiple levels of skyboxes, all of MSG's skyboxes are at the top of the building. This means that the seats are all relatvely close to the floor and, thus, it gets really loud.

Quente

To me, MSG is simply a container (and an uninspired one at that); it's the events that take place there which activate it and give it any sort of interest. While you could certainly make that argument about any sports venue (container vs. content), there are many that are quite inspiring/awesome when they're empty (Maracana in Rio and the Astrodome in Houston come to mind). MSG however is not one of those venues!

Though it's been years since I went to an event there, I still remember going to MSG to watch Brazil beat Italy in Mexico City during the 1970 World Cup on closed circuit TV. After the game, we all danced around the large screens at the bottom of the arena and I remember seeing all the tiny Italian flags that had been so enthusiastically waved during the game, broken across the backs of the seats - made quite an impression on my 7 year old mind.

Madison Square Garden renovation will cost more, take longer and include luxury `supersuite'
3 June 2009

NEW YORK (AP) - A "supersuite" that could hold 300 people and luxury suites with kitchens, full bars and fireplaces will be offered to big spenders at the new Madison Square Garden, officials said Tuesday in an update of plans to upgrade the 41-year-old arena.

The renovation of the nation's busiest arena will take a year longer than planned -- the upper level won't be finished until the beginning of the NBA and NHL's 2012-2013 season -- and will go over its $500 million budget, MSG Vice Chairman Hank Ratner said.

But, "we're not going to be looking for anyone else to pay for it," Ratner said.

The city and state have committed hundreds of millions in bonds and other incentives to the Yankees and Mets' new stadiums and a planned arena for the New Jersey Nets.

Ratner said no decisions had been made on pricing, including for the 20 floor-level luxury suites and the 5,000-square-foot supersuite. But he said the arena is trying to learn from other sports venues in a tanking economy. The Yankees cut the price of over 100 front-row seats from $2,500 to $1,250 last month after seeing empty rows of the top-priced spots game after game.

The Garden officials showed reporters two mock-ups of a midlevel and floor-level luxury suite, which will soon be shopped to corporate sponsors. The suites behind the 23rd row at the Garden included granite-topped kitchen islands behind stadium seating; the floor-level suite featured formal dining tables, full bars and a fireplace.

The Garden abandoned plans for 19 "ledge suites" on the higher levels and combined 10 luxury suites to create the one supersuite since it introduced the plans a year ago.

Patrons will have 40 more places to buy concessions, including "blue seat bars" at the upper levels in the new arena, officials said. The renovation won't change the exterior of the drum-shaped arena, although knocking down some walls on the inside would give patrons street views from wider concourses. The iconic, domed ceiling will be raised and the angle of every seat will be changed to give better views from the top, officials said.

Ratner gave no date when construction would begin, but said 150 MSG employees were in the process of moving out to offices across the street to make way for the expansion. The renovations are planned largely during summer months, creating no schedule changes for the NBA's New York Knicks and NHL's New York Rangers, although Ratner said the arena was still working on the schedule for the New York Liberty women's basketball team.

The Garden opted for the renovation a year ago after backing out of long negotiations with the state and city to sell the arena and move into a landmark post office building a block away.

The decision stalled the $14 billion plan to renovate Pennsylvania Station and build office towers in the neighborhood, where the Garden's spot had been seen as prime real estate.

Ratner said the Garden hadn't reconsidered its move.

"We are renovating MSG, period," he said.

MSG, the Knicks, Liberty and Rangers are owned by Cablevision Systems Corp.

Madison Square Garden's interior bowl consists of one big tier which is divided into three sections and two floors of luxury boxes. And there's even a 5,000-seat performing arts theatre right below the arena. If only the renovation involved gutting the arena and give it an exterior like all the other indoor arenas constructed in the 2000s have. But with the performing arts venue below it, any major renovation to the facility wold be difficult.

Time for a new arena maybe? Say a 30,000 convertible one at the rail yards (the proposed backup site for the NYC's 2012 Olympic Stadium)?

Perhaps the "demolished" Madison Square Garden could turn into an actual garden? Naturally one would want to propose some sort of MSG museum there.

The other story that has progressed in lock step with Walsh's free-agent plan is a $775 million-$850 million renovation of Madison Square Garden that is expected to be partially completed by 2011-12 season. Essentially, everything but the iconic exterior and ceiling will be gutted and modernized, so that MSG's outdated amenities finally will measure up to its reputation.

"To continue to attract the greatest events in the world, the world's most famous arena will become the world's most state-of-the-art arena," MSG president and CEO Hank Ratner said.

It doesn't take much creative license to see that Dolan isn't spending nearly $1 billion because he wants the paying customers to be more comfortable. In addition to perks like widened concourses, windows opening up to city views, and better sightlines from both the upper and lower bowls, the transformation of the Garden will include something never before attempted -- something that will solidify it as the proper playpen for the sport's biggest star, should he choose to embrace it. The building will feature 20 court-level suites the size of Manhattan apartments -- and with a similar price tag. Each will have a living room and a fireplace and access to courtside seats, with the expected price to exceed $1 million for a year's worth of Garden events.

The facelift is being financed entirely by MSG, making it difficult to believe that Dolan expects Walsh's simultaneous renovation of the Knicks to be sidetracked by fickle free agents or a work stoppage that threatens to wipe out a good chunk of the first season in the renovated building.

Some people are criticizing it purely because it's an old building and doesn't luke so modern, but did you know it's actually very high on NBA rankings?

Few arenas in the NBA have the atmosphere of the MSG, Kobe and Lebron (even Jordan in his time) have recognized they enjoy playing there because of the atmosphere, the lightning, and the fans. Like a read on a NBA site "some people say it's a dump, hey! it's a classy dump"

If Madison Square Garden's interior were changed, i would gut the interior structure and put in a lower tier with 20 rows of seating, an upper tier with five rows of seating, and luxury boxes at the very top of the arena, completely around the seating bowl. The Populous Sports Facilities Group should have designed a future renovation of the structure. but now another firm is doing the job.

MSG undoubtedly had a better atmosphere during Jordan's career than Kobe and LBJ's. The Knicks and Bulls had an actual rivalry, and the Knicks weren't losing 60+ games a year. Kobe and James, when they are referring to MSG as "the Mecca of basketball" are just repeating what Jordan had stated in the past and are not basing that on any personal experiences.

Kobe was in the league for several years when the Knicks were very good and MSG has an incredible atmosphere. LeBron, not so much, but any players with an appreciation for basketball history are ok in my book.

In the early years of Kobe's career possibly. Kobe Bryant was a rookie during the '96-'97 season. The ASG in 1998 was at MSG in which Bryant was a starter for the West. The Knicks were in the Finals in 1999, but due to the shortened season the Lakers didn't play the Knicks during the regular season. The Knicks have been an disaster for LeBron James's entire career. The Knicks no longer sell out games on a regular basis.

What do they do with the ice when their is a consert?
I know they just lay the basketball floor over it when the Knicks play, but when there is an extensive non-hockey use; like a consert or a convention; is the ice still there?

I'm sorry to say to this but this has to be one of the dumbest idea's ever madson square garden has had it's time it's time to build a new arena. It's actually not a very big arena when compared to other arena's. The only reason why it makes a lot of money is because well it's in new york how can it not make money. Now the renovations do look impressive but this could get ugly if there are too many cost over runs and there will be some because msg is an old building and unexpected problems will happen.

It's pretty much right in line with the rest of the NBA and NHL, I guess one could argue it should be larger than the rest, but it seems to be fine in terms of size, and as long as its mostly private money who cares how they spend it? Also its nice they are keeping the ceiling, I'm not a huge fan of the new bowl but at least it will look sort of unique.

I don't think so. I believe that when the luxury seats were added twenty years ago, the capacity increased, since there were no seats on the upper side of the garden. Proof?

The concave roof of the Madison Square Garden dips too low for the spectators at the highest levels of the seating bowl to view the event.

Also, I hope the new bridges suspended from the ceiling do not suddenly collapse onto the seating bowl, which would be a disaster.

And the Millrose Games (an indoor track and field event) will move from Madison Square Garden (MSG 2, 3, and 4 hosted the event) to the Fort Washington Avenue Armory due to declining attendance and rent issues in MSG.

MSG going above & beyond
Makeover to give fans a view from the top

http://www.nypost.com/rw/nypost/2010/05/24/news/photos_stories/cropped/madison_square_garden--300x300.jpg

Forget courtside! The hottest ticket at the revamped Madison Square Garden will be straight above Spike Lee's head.
Up to a thousand fans will get to sit in premium nosebleed seats on the two sky bridges that will be built five stories above the playing floor as part of the $850 million inside-out reconstruction of the "World's Most Famous Arena."
"This is our signature element. It will be a unique experience in sports and entertainment," Hank Ratner, CEO of Madison Square Garden, told The Post.
Rather than merely renovate the Garden, the project, funded without a dime in taxpayer subsidies, calls for building an entirely new arena in the shell of the 1968 building, he said.

HIGH CHAIRS: Fans will be able to look out over the action from two bridges planned as part of the four-year Madison Square Garden renovation.

"This gives us the best of both worlds. We keep what's iconic -- the exterior and the famous ceiling -- and create a whole new building," Ratner said.
Construction will start in earnest on June 14 and go through several phases over the next four years, moving from the bottom up. The work, which will not disrupt the Knicks or Rangers seasons, will occur mostly in summer.
After conducting focus groups with fans, MSG officials found that the biggest complaints were over the arena's lobby, its narrow concourses, the limited food choices, the lack of bathrooms, and the poor sightlines at the higher levels, Ratner said.
"We gave the whole list to our architects," he said.
One longtime complaint about the Garden is that the building gives no sense of its location in the heart of Manhattan.
By moving out most of the office space, the revamp will turn the somewhat claustrophobic lower concourse into a wide thoroughfare with city views, shopping and high-end dining options.
This concourse will pay homage to the Garden's history, with tributes to Knicks and Rangers championships to such landmark events as the Ali-Frazier fight.
Also, as part of the first phase, to be completed for the 2011-12 seasons, is the addition of 20 "event-level" suites. Located below courtside and featuring kitchens, bathrooms, fireplaces and dining rooms "nicer than most apartments in Manhattan," the suites lead up to the best seats in the house.
The following year, the arena's upper bowl will be redone.
The new seats will all be more plush, and the angle of the bowl's incline will be increased 17 degrees to bring fans closer to the action.
This phase will include the addition of 58 "lower-level suites," which would be larger and closer to the action than the ones in the current Garden.
The sky bridges and new lobby are set to be completed for the 2013-14 seasons, along with a party deck on the 10th floor and remodeled upper-level suites.
Pricing has not been set for the sky bridges, but the courtside suites reportedly sold for upward of $1 million.

A construction camera is now available. The lower bowl is being rebuilt. There were supposed to be 20 event level suites, yet I only see six of them. (Six entryways (if that's the right word) carved into the lower tier).

Released on the revised MSG Transformation website are:
10th Floor West Balcony (2012)
8th Floor Garden Concourse Viewing Area (2012)
New Event Level Suites
Knicks Locker Room
New Delta SKY360° Club
Refurbished Lower Bowl
Expanded 6th Floor Madison Concourse (2012)

The Garden should change that annoying organ or phase it out since they've already started renovating.

makatiprime

that was the sound of the game, if people don't like it because of that annoying sound of organ maybe people watch a football game or soccer or baseball at no sounds of a basketball

The Game Is Up

Well, baseball and football (professional) have their canned noise they blast in from speakers. I'm not fond of them, either. Soccer I can tolerate more, as they've essentially followed the tradition of fans being the ones responsible to make noise. Of course, it's just a generalized opinion. I don't have time to go into specifics.

Anyway, it's good that they're getting rid of those boxes right above the concourse (shown in that last video).

Madison Square Garden, often abbreviated as MSG and known colloquially as The Garden, is a multi-purpose indoor arena (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arena) in the New York City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City) borough (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borough_%28New_York_City%29) of Manhattan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhattan) and located at 8th Avenue, between 31st and 33rd Streets, situated on top of Pennsylvania Station (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsylvania_Station_%28New_York_City%29).
Opened on February 11, 1968, it is the longest active major sporting facility in the New York metropolitan area (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_metropolitan_area), and is the fourth incarnation of the arena in the city. One Penn Plaza (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Penn_Plaza) stands at its side. Several other operating entities (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madison_Square_Garden_%28disambiguation%29) related to the venue share its name.

The shop changes depending on the event. On knicks day the shoppes are all NBA and Knicks gear. On Rangers games the shoppes are mostly Rangers with Knicks gear still available. On concerts or other events I imagine the shoppes will cater to the event at hand with a sprinkling of Knicks stuff available.

From what I hear they tore down the lower ring and rebuilt it, making the viewing angle much steeper so that you feel like you're on top of the action.

Also, it seems like the corridor/tunnel from the locker rooms were removed and moved to the goal ends of the court, which kind of helps in basketball but hurts the hockey experience-- fewer seats behind the glass, because they have to have walkways to where the hockey teams sit.

And I guess for basketball purists and historians, that's kind of sacrilegious because they tore down one of the iconic parts of the Garden... the old corridor where Willis Reed came out for his dramatic game 7 return that inspired the team to win its first NBA championship, seen here:
