non-muslims do go to makkah and madinah but only on special permits given to them by the government of saudi arabia. during the revamping years of makah and madinah mosques, a lot of foreigners (non-muslims) worked there.

What's the big deal? Aren't certain pieces of land on earth demarcated into "national" boundaries, meaning those who have the citizenship can enter and live while those that don't, the overwhelming majority of the world, can not enter and live inside the nation.

If that concept is valid, so is this. This is a holy city for Muslims. Anybody who becomes a Muslim can enter. It is not difficult to become a Muslim, and no one is barred from being one, no matter what kind of human you were in the past, and no matter your age, gender, former religion, nationality, language etc etc.

As you might have inferred, the Saudi authorities do not allow non-moslems to the holy areas. That has not always been the case, in fact, Mecca (and hijaz in general) were among the most cosmopolitan areas in the Middle East (and major routes for trade).
In Islam some interpretations consider Christians and Jews to be "pure" (for example: shaking hands with them does not revoke ablutions) and some see them as impure, or even infidels.
The Wahhabi interpretation takes an extreme position on the issue and prohibits the presence of non-moslems in the holy cities, in fact, if the extremist wahhabis had it their way, and if not for political considerations, they would not even allow shi`as in there.

There are Millions that want to be in Makkah for a purpose either for pilgramage or Prayers or for Umrah.

Non muslims just standing there for site seeing are using up precious space and resources that should be allocated to those that need Makkah for prayers.

Not only do they do it to have less people to deal with they also have that rule established because as someone earlier on mentioned there is no point for non muslims to be there.

And if you're wonderin, it's different from the Vatican were everyone can go on. Well, it's the rules by the saudi government, it won't change. You can go to mosques in other cities, those 2 are an exception.

i seriously feel that khobar has been downgraded in recent years. i mean.. theres a lot of excellent stuff going on. but the road from habitat building all the way to johra etc has just become kind of ugly. and the biggest factor to the ugliness are those black railings running alongside the pathways in between two roads.

As Saudi Arabia has the two holiest places of Islam (Makkah and Madina), other people (mainly non-Muslims) will surely be asking religious questions here in this sub-forum, it's natural and I believe there's nothing wrong in it if they ask their questions with the right intention, I am in favour of making a stickified thread for the same purpose in this Saudi sub-forum (as it will save other threads from becoming religious threads) + we need a Saudi member here to moderate this forum for better moderation (this doesn't mean that other ME mods are not good, they are excellent) but still I believe a Saudi can moderate this sub-forum much better and I must say with great interest..!

Now let's get back on topic!

I know ya'll are thinking what a :weirdo: since there is no coherent patteren when posting totally random pics, but whatever.

I used to live in Saudi Arabia, specifically Jubail Industrial city a few years ago, and it's one of the best residential cities the country has to offer. Ahhh, I miss those placid days of chilling at the corniche at 2:00 AM playing cards, smoking sheesha at Abu-Haytham, then going to Intercontinental Resorts beach with my girlfriend.

Really? lol.. mebbe you do know, but I'm not an Arab or Saudi; just a Pakistani trying to learn Arabic properly and become proficient. I lived in Fanateer, in those apartments near the new Farm 2, haha does that narrow it down for you?

Jubail is amazing. I remember during Ramadan and summer breaks I'd go play basketball at the court at Nakheel beach, and that used to become a meeting place. Man, those were good times.

Hmm.. I won't reveal myself, but I used to hang out with this fat Pakistani kid named Zain (most of Saudis in RC knew him). And I played ball with these two Yemeni brothers and one of the dudes name is Khalid (they were some of the best players there.) I also used to workout (a lot) at the Recreation Center in Fanateer near the new Giant Stores. Though the one in Huwaylat was much better, but I couldn't be bothered to drive there ;P

I know Zain very well.....fat... just like you said! I played at the Fanateer Rec Center and swam there too. Btw, Zain has the most amazing Escalade in town.

You know what's interesting! When I was in Al Soudah I saw 2 tourist busses from India & Japan. Mostly older people.

Oh, I thought Apartheid was just something from the past that happened in South Africa... so in KSA there are "Muslim restricted areas" where other people can't enter? You say there's no point in visiting Makkah if you're not Muslim... well, that's your opinion, let us (Non Muslims) decide if we're interested or not in visiting the city. (That's called freedom, but I know it's not a very popular word in Saudi Arabia).

Besides, learning about different cultures is something good man, you don't have to be religious to visit a Church, a Mosque, or a Synagogue, it's part of the human culture and it's good we all learn about each other... That helps to be more open minded... but again, I don't know if "Open minded" is in the vocabulary of Saudis

Was that politics? I just thought that picture was provoquing and if the point of this thread was to share the best of Saudi Arabia with the rest of the world, that was just something that should ashame you all... just a question: that woman in the first Faisaliah restaurant picture- why isn't she wearing an abaya? i lived in Riyadh for at least 5 years and i always thought it was illegal to do that. my mom and sister always got told to cover themselves when they went out.

The pictures of the Kingdom Center are amazing. For some reason that building is just magical. The design is revolutionary and mind-blowing. And I cannot imagine a better color/type of reflective glass for a building. It's just perfect. That building is an asset to Riyadh and I think it's a thing of pride for the whole country.

How easy is it for a U.S. citizen to visit a city like Riyadh, Jeddah, Medina or Dhahran? I'd like to visit those cites sometime.

Well, I think it's very easy for a U.S. citizen to visit any city in the KSA but not Medina nor Makkah because only Muslims allowed to visit them.

Saudi Guy, Bin Humran looks very nice ! And also Taif. Sometimes Im confused between Taif in KSA and Taiz in Yemen. My Emirati friend mentioned the name of one popular hill resort in southern part of KSA bordering Yemen but I don't remember. Jeddah, Riyadh, Damman and Khobar are fantastic cities with great infrastructure ! I really want to visit Saudi from Oman last February but visa is difficult to get. Have to visit there for hajj then can explore the whole KSA :D Very nice country. I still dont have good frens from KSA. All my Arab frens are from Yemen, Oman, and UAE.

Abha is highly elevated and it is home to the culminating point in Saudi Arabia, Jabal Al Sooda (the Black mountain) which stands at 3300 meters high. The area is subject to rain, sometimes heavy, some of its neighboring villages and rural areas are sometimes the witnesses of flash-floods during the winter. The fresh weather comparatively to the rest of the peninsula makes it an attraction point during the summer.

Abha's homes are made of stone and mud and were built by hand. Some homes are over 300 years old and still inhabited. The slight graduation from one layer to the next gives these houses the overall impression of truncated pyramids. Foundations are usually stones. The houses are built in shelf-like, overlapping, vertical rows that act as rain guides, keeping the rain from saturating the walls and washing them away.

Abha has a well known marketplace, which is open daily. The market is always busy with activity and people moving about. The locals bargain for goods like: fruits, vegetables, and coffee beans among other items. Local specialty items like ornate silver Bedouin jewelry or hand-woven baskets are also available.
