View Full Version : Nimbyhater Photo Tour
nimbyhater December 27th, 2005, 02:50 AM Alright, since my joining this group of misfits a little over a year ago the photo tours you guys have put together have brought me great joy. I have yearned to bring some of that joy you my fellow forumers, but I never had the means to travel around Miami efficiently enough to be able to put one of these tours together. In August I got my car and I thought the day had arrived that I would finally be able to do it. I then realized, I have no camera. So again I had to wait. The solution presented itself a few hours ago, when it dawned on me that the digital camera that I got my girlfriend for Christmas could be put to great use. I now have the camera, the car, nothings stopping me.
So I no longer have any excuses, and need requests. What do you guys want pictures of? What sites? What buildings? I'lll give you guys a few days to tell me what you want and then I'll take a day and hit the town. Include some address or areas or a general idea of where places are, I don't keep that mental inventory of every building like some of you guys do.
The Mad Hatter!! December 27th, 2005, 02:58 AM come on bro...you should know every site in miami lol
I know about 100 lol.
anyways i'm sure a nice rundown from ten museum till 1390, should only take you about 30 minutes and you can get about 15 sites while at it.
BornInTheGrove December 27th, 2005, 03:38 AM I would like a picture of the manhole on flagler and biscayne blvd... lolol j/k
Take pictures of whatever you want m friend, as long as you take great quality pictures and its a nice clear day
DGM December 27th, 2005, 04:17 AM I just went to the dadeland area today to get some pictures. But, I left too late and the sun set as I got there. I'll have pics soon though. Anyhow, I like Mad Hatter's Idea. I saw that progress was being made as I sped past those buildings on my way to the beach, but I've been wanting a better view.
rider_of_rohan December 27th, 2005, 05:12 AM I want a picture of strip malls, they are lovely
900Biscayneguy December 27th, 2005, 05:18 AM Marina Blue, 900, Marquis, 10 Museum Park, and Blue
jdnn December 27th, 2005, 12:50 PM Definitely more of Miami's parks, malls and suburbs.
nimbyhater December 27th, 2005, 06:06 PM mental note to self... south miami
DGM December 28th, 2005, 04:47 AM South Miami is definitely booming. Don't forget to go west of US-1 if you go around there looking for development.
Pablo63090 December 28th, 2005, 08:02 AM The Wachovia Financial Center, The Bank of America Tower, and Government Center
DShoost88 December 28th, 2005, 08:04 AM I recall driving to Key Biscayne and getting the most amazing view of Miami from the Rickenbauker Causeway... maybe if you parked by the bottom of the bridge and hiked up the 75-100 feet up (how ever high that bridge is) to take the pictures. It must be a clear day to get it, and at the right angle the city could actually look like an urban island. Another great shot would be from Watson Island; park @ Parrot Jungle and face west @ Ten Museum, MarniaBlue, Everglades on the Bay, and others.

You are so right DS, that is my favorite spot as well, right between my two favorite areas, Key Biscayne and Coconut Grove. Beautiful place.
BornInTheGrove December 28th, 2005, 11:11 PM Another great place to take pictures of this great city is at MDC Wolfson campus parking garage. The thing has like 12 floors of parking, and the roof always gives a great view of the city.
i found some pics i took when i was at doing spring semester 04 at wolfson.

Roark December 28th, 2005, 11:49 PM I recall driving to Key Biscayne and getting the most amazing view of Miami from the Rickenbauker Causeway..http://www.restainer.com/skyscrapers/BrickellAveW.jpg
ISG December 29th, 2005, 12:42 AM Could you take pictures of Midtown Miami and Blue... Both are around 36th street.
brickell December 29th, 2005, 01:07 AM I want to see the Masonic temple on the other* side of downtown.
*The forgotten side, west of 95 on the river. There's a couple of gems over there.
DGM December 29th, 2005, 01:09 AM I noticed today that you can see downtown, the gables, the grove, kendall and miami beach from the cape florida light house. It's probably not worth trying to get a picture from there unless it is a really clear day like today. It is like 10 miles to downtown from there. But still, you can get a pretty good, unobstructed view of all of miami from there on a clear day.
rider_of_rohan December 29th, 2005, 06:23 AM Nice pic Roark, great area for shots.
DShoost88 December 29th, 2005, 08:13 AM Another one of my favorite pics of Miami was one I saw in the newspaper taken by Fisher Island. The article was talking about the "hot Miami real estate market and the prices to match." If you take the Fisher Island Ferry from Macarthur to the island, you could probably get a great view from the channel. It would look best at 5:30ish- 6 o'clock when the sun is setting; in fact, that is the best time of day to take any pics facing west of Miami. If you do take the ferry, make sure you bring a tri-pod so the picture doesn't come out blurry. ;)
Meepy January 2nd, 2006, 01:34 AM BornintheGrove, is it ok if I save your pictures to my desktop?. That last picture shows awesome density man! - Nice pics!

rider_of_rohan January 6th, 2006, 05:16 AM NICE!!!! Great job Nimby. Man it looks like all of Dadeland is under construction. Can you say boom!!!
BornInTheGrove January 6th, 2006, 05:49 AM Outstanding pictures nimby, just fantastic. Yes, the rooftop parking at dadeland is indeed and awesome place to take pics of downtown dadeland. If you want, you can try to use photobucket.com to put your pics up...
Roark January 6th, 2006, 06:37 AM Another good show Nimby! We should all bring our birds and have a forum date night at that Watson Island make out point!
DShoost88 January 7th, 2006, 01:00 AM Was that second one from the top "Ten Museum Park?" If so, it's coming out nicely. And what about MarinaBlue? Have you got any pictures of the progress from that building or anything underconstruction between the CBD and I-395?
Pablo63090 January 7th, 2006, 02:18 AM Nice views. MarinaBlue is rising really quickly.
BornInTheGrove January 7th, 2006, 04:54 AM DShoost, the first picture is MarinaBlue
DShoost88 January 7th, 2006, 07:20 AM Is that first one really MarinaBlue?! It really is going up fast! (if only Met Miami would move that fast or perhaps the go-aheads from the FAA for any other proposed building above 600 feet).
MIAballinboi January 7th, 2006, 06:10 PM great pics, another good hosting site is photobucket
nimbyhater January 18th, 2006, 03:02 AM Aite, three weeks from my original opening of this thread. Its done, this is finished. Enjoy...
Re-post of post from awhile ago continued with the new pictures.
Damn, this was alot more work than I thought it would be. But here we go, the first leg of what I hope will be numerous photo tours. Grabbed a few of downtown and Dadeland in my regular travels. Because of basic geographical convenience, I did my first actual phototour in Coconut Grove. Tried to hit as many of the sites that I could remember, and a few of the area in general, but I'm sure I forgot a few. And so, here we go:
For you lady killers out there, lemme give you a little advice. You pick up her favorite dinner, drive to Watson Island just as the sun is going down, shes all yours (for a romantic evening, don't be gettin any ideas fellas!). And while there, I snapped these two.

Had to go to Dadeland and a few places around there to return some unwanted Christmas gifts. When in the parking lot in front of the Old Navy next to Downtown Dadeland I was astounded by the view. Then had to trek across Kendall to Dadeland Mall and had to go all the way to the top of the garage to park. And when I got up there, I had an oh shit moment, cause I never knew of this view. I had to take a few...

And then after I left, took a few at night.

Dadeland Station, the Dadeland North metro stop parking garage (the one the hearld had the article about that fills up by about 8) and that new condo building... There'll be another one soon if im not mistaken.
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e16/elcubanorojo/grove%20photo%20tour/DSCF2214a.jpg
The crane at collonade. Didnt' think to turn around and take one during the day (it was literally right behind me) and when I was driving down and I saw it. You can make it out, just gotta look closely, the point is... its there...
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e16/elcubanorojo/grove%20photo%20tour/DSCF2215a.jpg
So a day later I says to myself I says, lets go to the Grove... So here you go, beautiful Coconut Grove.
Started out with Grove Garden, a little project I'm particularly found of because I walk by it everyday.

I think it's called Grove Lofts... apparently its a Kobi Karp building. On Grand in front of the CVS, just west of McDonald Street. Kinda pushing the border with "historic Coconut Grove". I bet these went for a little cheaper than most new condos.

One of the Grove's nicest streets... the builing above is just on the left in this picture.
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e16/elcubanorojo/grove%20photo%20tour/DSCF2310a.jpg
The post office definetly doesn't need a parking lot this big. Build a garage on the first two floors of a 20 story office or condo... I don't care that theres a five story height limit in the grove.
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e16/elcubanorojo/grove%20photo%20tour/DSCF2311a.jpg
Who was it that liked the crappy shopping centers, this is one of the greatest, in the absoulute worst place ever. CVS, Bank of America, Cingular, and the sales office for the Grove lofts. Woopie! I hear from the old Grove types that this used to a theatre with weekly showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show... this is so much better.
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e16/elcubanorojo/grove%20photo%20tour/DSCF2312a.jpg
Beautiful "historic Coconut Grove"... the village west... the island district... Home to the first Bahamian settlers 100 years ago!
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e16/elcubanorojo/grove%20photo%20tour/DSCF2314a.jpg
Crappy quick shot out the window of Cocowalk.

Looking down Main Highway at the intersection of Main Highway, Grand Ave, and South Bayshore Drive... a pedestrian and drivers nightmare. But doesn't she look pretty?
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e16/elcubanorojo/grove%20photo%20tour/DSCF2318a.jpg
My friend actually has one of the residences on the top. Total keyless security, its all like security codes and such... very futuristic. The place on bottom, Oasis, is a teeny boper hang out. Was cool before all the 14 year olds took over.
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e16/elcubanorojo/grove%20photo%20tour/DSCF2319a.jpg
Peacock Park, nice urban park in the heart of the Grove. They actually where doing Shakespeare plays there the other day. Some new "villas" went up recently in the back.

Another crappy one of Cocowalk from in front of the park. Traffic sucks.
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e16/elcubanorojo/grove%20photo%20tour/DSCF2326a.jpg
The buildings on South Bayshore form a nice little wall... its not Lakeshore Drive in Chicago... but I think its one of the nicer ones in Miami. Biscayne will kick its ass in a few years though...

New marina complex and grocery store they built right on the water. The grocery store is a Fresh Market, one of those spiffy luxury grocery stores were seeing more and more of around Miami.

I saw a hill in Miami, and I had to take a picture.
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e16/elcubanorojo/grove%20photo%20tour/DSCF2337a.jpg
More crappy generic looking townhomes and "villas" all over the place.

Could this possibly be more underground parking? The apocalypse is near, its everywhere. We need more huge ugly parking pedestals to avoid things like this.

Brick in Miami? This just looks weird.

Actually the first Bahamian settlers came to Miami more than 200 years ago in late 18th century and early 19th.
Roark January 18th, 2006, 10:28 AM Great photo tour Nimby...lots of great pictures in there.
I especially like your pictures of the Groverner House in Coconut Grove. That's the Ugo Columbo development. I couldn't help but notice that the apartment units are almost ALL glass! The concrete seems to be only verticle supporting columns.
If you look at it closely, there is a 10 to 1 ratio of glass to concrete!!! Amazing. Arquatectonica buildings are more like 1 square foot of concrete for every one square foot of glass. As we afficianados know...concrete is cheap, glass is not.
That is really genius!!! Any idea who the architect is on that building? And who is Ugo Columbo using on that DuPont building?
Amazing how much glass that architect manages to design...what a great feat of engineering. :)
Pablo63090 January 19th, 2006, 12:25 AM Pretty nice. The Grove is an awesome place.
nimbyhater January 19th, 2006, 12:37 AM Actually the first Bahamian settlers came to Miami more than 200 years ago in late 18th century and early 19th.

900Biscayneguy January 20th, 2006, 11:55 PM Can anyone take some progress shots of 900 Biscayne, 10 Museum and Marina Blue? Also, is there anything to see at Everglades and 50 biscayne? You can get a great perspective from the metromover stations.

Hello 900 Biscayne :) , . just scroll down below to NIMBY's Photos in this thread dated Jan. 17th, the first picture is the Marina Blue :) condo tower now at 20 floors, and then the secone picture is the Ten Museum :) Condo tower at 32 floors. Also 900 Biscayne Condo tower is still putting its foundation in, no progress on the vertical part, as of yet, very slow moving on this project.
900Biscayneguy January 21st, 2006, 03:02 AM Hey Chuck,
Nice to hear from you!!! I did see NIMBY's photo of Marina Blue. That is an "old" photo. They are getting ready to pour the 31st floor and since then have installed more glass. I thought 900 was up out of the ground, at least support collumns??? :runaway:

900 has all the columns for the tower up to the first floor and has begun to put the framing for the mezzanine/2nd floor in the NE corner of the lot.
