View Full Version : #Project: Paradise Centre
Steve March 15th, 2003, 04:02 AM Well they keep rolling in, the bulletin reports today (and they've got a big pic) of a new 15 level tower to be built on top of the Paradise centre, above the bit which burnt down. 56 Apartments, and it looks pretty decent, it'll keep the two other towers currently above the centre company. The new retail section stays the same as in previous renders.
They also said that Juniper will probably soon be releasing a new tower to sit on top of Raptis Plaza, so Cavill mall will soon be getting a few new towers!
CULWULLA March 16th, 2003, 05:30 AM good stuff! i have to wait to get to see bulliten later in week!
cheers
CULWULLA March 19th, 2003, 10:13 AM The 15 level tower actually sits on a 2 level podium thus 17 levels. I contacted GCCC today and its 55m high.
I love the vibrant colours!

chrisaus March 19th, 2003, 10:59 AM not bad, looks abit tacky with the colours
you would think it would be pretty loud there to theres alot of foot traffic, and clubs/bars close by
it seems once surfers gets started it CANT STOP [i like it:)]
ray March 19th, 2003, 11:41 AM Yeah it's going to be a pretty much a luxury high-end tower from all reports, which I guess is to be expected, the location is about as central as you can get. It's a nice design, and anything higher probably wouldn't be inappropriate for that close to the mall.
Mr MacPhisto March 21st, 2003, 02:47 PM This is taller than I was expecting so close to that end of the mall.
Looks ok, jury still out on the colour scheme :?
SUNNI March 23rd, 2003, 12:55 PM as towers age off, these taky colours will look bad (altho its gonna look good when its first complete)so i think they shoud have something clean,....imo:)

disagree sunni! GC needs more colours especially in there new developments. Thats why these new projects have colours!! or lots of glass!!
check out the top 10 uc atm!
:D
ray March 25th, 2003, 12:33 AM I think the main thing they need to get away from is the pastel colours, which they have done of late, almost all the new buildings are either glass or white or cool colours.
Chevron Renaissance is a case in point, they actually changed the color scheme of the building while u/c it was meant to be more yellowish, but they went for a grey/white/blue look at it looks just sensational, a real change for the better:)
ray March 30th, 2003, 04:36 AM Well, that was quick, piling has commenced on this one!:)
CULWULLA April 1st, 2003, 02:56 AM i was just chatting to a GC planner and he said that a developer is looking at 3x 30storeys towers for Southport!
to start later in year!
amazing! Also he is sending me plans of a 24storey storey which has just been given approval for Southport. So it is really booming out there!!!

That is mad!!!
With all of these "mid level" towers going up on the coast I'm expecting to see a few more Circle sized buildings designed to stand up in the crowd.
SUNNI April 6th, 2003, 02:50 PM cul, do u get all these info in the bulletin?
the master April 11th, 2003, 02:53 PM I dont like this proposal and hope something else is built instead. its bland design and its tacky colours will age very quickly and that sort of thing is by far the last thing surfers needs! an aged structure!! In fact i think it already looks aged in the pictures and it hasnt even been built!! the council and more right-minded developers like sunland and raptis are trying to transform surfers into the type of place that would not accept this sort of rushed and boring proposal and junipers will by no doubt have something impressive planned for accros the road. I believe this site is an extremely important where it is on the corner of orchid and cavill avenues and should be saved for something that could be much better for the urban revitalisation of surfers.
SUNNI April 20th, 2003, 11:42 AM yeah, thats what i thaught... doesnt anyone agree?
they could always light up the buildings with neon lights to make it look good at night...
CULWULLA February 18th, 2004, 05:20 AM any construction pix ??
JayT February 18th, 2004, 10:23 AM Does anyone know about that big new Juniper redevelopment of Raptis Plaza - its just accross the street from this one. It is gonna be big.

Nothing on Juniper's website except a reference to an upcoming project named Ocean (or Oceans) Plaza in Cavill Mall.
CULWULLA February 18th, 2004, 11:51 AM yeah thats the Dolphin twin towers. one is 50storeys other is 30 storeys. the DA should be lodged soon.
citiboy September 10th, 2004, 01:34 PM update------- this building so far only has the podium 2 floors built maybe about a
year. cafes down stairs a club on level 1 . no sign of the 15 level apartments yet.
CULWULLA September 10th, 2004, 04:21 PM thanks for update.
citiboy January 16th, 2005, 12:53 PM still the same . very busy in shops ( me drink here to much ) and club on first floor but no word on units going on top .
Macca-GC January 17th, 2005, 04:40 AM I'm not sure they're even going to go ahead with this one. It was always proposed for the area of the Paradise Centre that got burnt down. I think if they were ever going to do it, they would have done it straight away.
DeejayT September 6th, 2006, 06:20 AM Can a mod please move this to the G.C. section!
Susie Douglas strikes again ... I really hope at the next council election she isn't re-elected

CAVILL Mall will not become a 'concrete canyon' if councillors have their way.
The planning committee yesterday refused a towering development atop the Paradise Centre saying it would ruin the mall's 'fresh, airy feel'.
They said the 16-storey development would 'canyonise' the Coast's most vibrant public space.
Area councillor Susie Douglas said the development would have set a dangerous precedent.
Approving one residential building at that end of the mall could pave the way for a dark, gloomy, concrete canyon, she said.
"If you allow one residential development everyone will want to buy roofspace," said Cr Douglas.
"Then you would have residents overlooking a very sensitive area.
"At night time I would be very concerned about people living so close to the mall."
There were already enough streets in Surfers Paradise flanked by high rises and the mall should remain a bright, open space for locals and tourists, she said.
"(This development) is too close ... it would have overshadowed the mall and we don't want that.
"The way it is now we have sunshine in there, we can grow trees.
"We would have lost all that with these sorts of developments."
She said it would change the shape of the mall and the mix of residents with festivals such as Indy and Schoolies would not be a happy one.
Issues had already emerged for Fortitude Valley residents since that Brisbane suburb was designated an entertainment precinct the same declaration the council was seeking for Cavill Mall.
"That's another reason we want to avoid putting residential towers in that section of the street," she said.
Council officers told the meeting the development was totally inappropriate for the area.
Developers wanted to build 26 apartments above the existing two-storey retail section.
An initial application was lodged with the council in 2002 but developers requested it be held over because of a large number of public objections. They waited until council changed the rules in August 2003 so the development no longer had to be advertised and objections registered.
But the long wait was in vain, with planning officers finding 14 grounds for refusal.
CULWULLA September 6th, 2006, 07:32 AM this is on southern side of mall ,so how can it overshadow it?
DeejayT September 6th, 2006, 09:12 AM Your right Cul. Dolphin tower will have allot more effect on shadowing over the mall. This area is not only unlimited height ... but unlimited density. I can't understand how saying it will result in a concrete canyon when the plan encourages canyoning.
A quick map from google on the shadowing effect of this small tower.

how_good_is_he September 6th, 2006, 01:28 PM This is a crazy decision by council....why is the area "sensitive"? It is usually full of kids and tourists and more residents living near the mall will add to the safety. 16 storeys is tiny compared to whats around, over shadowing isnt an issue. Where do we get Susie Douglas' email address so we can blast her?

She says available anytime at the chambers by appointment so may I suggest you make your views known in person. :)
kwigibo September 7th, 2006, 08:29 AM What is this love affair she has with the sun, does she worship Ra or something?
Unless they start building towers on the beach proper, Cavill will always have plenty of sun.
aussieguy2001 September 7th, 2006, 11:30 AM Cant say im too fussed with this decision, its hardly the biggest loss!
Theres pleanty of high rise on that side of cavil as it is with Breakfree Paradise Centre and Courtyard By Marriott. The block on the opposite side of Cavil, however, is SCREAMING out for development!
