News:

Why can't they implement dividers in the entire Palace Road? They are wasting funds by spending for some mere beautifications without studying properly. PWD should give the first priority to the widening of all city roads.

Very true... But before implementing dividers in the entire Palace Road we need to widen the Palace road..

Corporation criticised

Thrissur: Writer Sukumar Azhikode has criticised the alleged ineptitude of Thrissur Corporation in finding a lasting solution to the Lalur Issue. Addressing the relay satyagraha organised by the Lalur Malineekarana Virudha Samara Samithy, on Tuesday he said the unresolved problems of Lalur revealed the inefficiency of Corporation authorities. Writer Sara Joseph observed a fast on Tuesday along with women and children of Lalur.

Ya You are right....

The cooperation needs to take steps to develop thrissur to a city level.
Hope this New Year will bring those changes to our cute small town..

Some new developments are going on here and there..
The pavements and footpaths are under constriction in the Nort Bus stand..outside vadkke chirra.. once completed it would be a nice place to sit and relax in the evenings.

Hopefully in 2010 more and more new projects would come up in Thrissur..
and the most important of them all would be the restructuring of our Swaraj Round.... Hopefully the cooperation would take a good decision keeping in mind the long lasting of the roads.....

happy new year to all the forum members... :)

Hi all my friends in the Thrissur forum,

First of all a big thank you to all of you for keeping this forum alive and active with interesting news, views and suggestions. I have been watching from the sidelines with a lot of interest, enjoyment, hopes and expectations. Being so far away from the actual scene, this is all I could do. By way of actual contributions, there was nothing from my side but rest assured I am an enthusiastic avid reader of this forum and a great lover and well- wisher of Thrissur, my home town. Not a single day passes without my peeping into this forum.

But for your timely contributions, I would not have known what is happening there, mostly for the good of the City in particular and the district in general. There are however disquieting news also such as the garbage disposal, lack of vision in the City administration etc. Hopefully in spite of these, the City will move forward and attract investors businessmen and peace - loving and culture loving people and do justice to its title as the cultural capital of Kerala.

I take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy and prosperous 2010:cheers: and hope there will be a lot of exciting news/projects to report in 2010.

No, It looks more like a school/College structure... even if it's not the Hostel..
It should be something related to St Mary's convert..

I had a closer look last time and hence did not shoot any images...

Forest academy soon

Thrissur: Forest Minister Benoy Viswom has said that the proposed Kerala Forest Academy and the public-sector sandalwood factory will begin functioning soon.

He was addressing a meeting to inaugurate the 22nd State Forest Sports Meet at the Corporation Stadium here on Sunday. “The Forest Academy will start functioning either towards the end of the current financial year or at the beginning of the next. The sandalwood factory too will be set up without further delay,” he said. He claimed there was a reduction in the number of forest crime cases in the State. “The rate of illegal felling of sandalwood trees has come down from eight a day to 0.14 a day. The government has effectively checked the ‘forest mafia’.

I think.. this habbit of increasing number of academy is of no purpose but spending money.....

Inspite of having a horticultural university.. our Thrissur Round, island and park.. does not look out standing.. but look worse when compared to other cities....

Small industries sector likely to get boost from government

Thrissur: Union Minister of State for Micro Small and Medium Enterprises Dinsha J. Patel has said the Union Government will soon initiate action on the report of a task force constituted under the directive of the Prime Minister to study problems faced by small-scale industries.

He was addressing a meeting to inaugurate a Common Facility Centre for Clay Processing and Testing set up by Terra Tiles Consortium Limited at Mundur, near here, on Monday.

“About six crore people are employed in 2.60 crore enterprises in the small industries sector. The sector accounts for 80 to 90 per cent of work force in the country, 45 per cent of production and 35 per cent of exports. The 11th Plan targets financial assistance of Rs. 4,735 crore for this sector that will lead to generation of 37 lakh jobs,” he said.He noted that assistance of 150 million dollars from the Asian Development Bank would contribute to extensive growth of the khadi sector.

He said that the Union Government had approved under the Micro and Small Enterprises Cluster Development Programme (MSE-CDP) proposals for setting up 12 Common Facility Centres in Kerala.Of these, the CFC at Mundur is the third to begin operation, the others being those for Rubber Industries Cluster at Changanaserry and Plastic Industries Cluster at Perumbavoor.

He stressed the need for quality control measures and state-of-the-art clay processing facilities for the 50-odd registered clay-based tile industry units.

The Union Government has launched two cluster development projects, Micro and Small Industries Cluster Development Programme (MSE-CDP) and Scheme of Fund for Regeneration of Traditional Industries (SFURTI) to make medium and small enterprises more competitive.

“Under MSE-CDP, the Union Government has supported 441 clusters. The limit for the cost of setting up Common Facility Centres is proposed to be raised from Rs. 10 to Rs. 15 crore each,” he said.

P. C. Chacko, MP, Therambil Ramakrishnan, C. Ravindranath, T. N. Prathapan, Babu M. Palissery, Thomas Unniyadan, MLAs, and T. O. Sooraj, Director of Industries and Commerce, were present.

As per the above post the Place is on the both sides of TUDA road.

Yes, It's a really Promising Area but Government should take care before giving sanctions for buidlings.. They should only give sanction of large buildings and it should also be commercial ones.. I hope this is the only way we can develop a New Commerical road of an developing City....

If i had the rights, i will certainly four lane the road going in front of Kovilakam and will connect it to Viyyur Road Which will provide More Development to the Road. It will also bring Viyyur closer to our City.

Thrissur: The police on Wednesday removed Lalur Malineekarana Virudha Samara Samithy members who blockaded the vehicles transporting garbage to the dump yard. The symbolic wall built by the agitators was removed by the police. Later, garbage collected from the city was disposed at the yard with police protection.

As part of their ongoing agitation against the City Corporation’s alleged ineptitude in solving the Lalur issue, Samara Samithy members sat at the entrance of the road leading to the dump yard. Writer Sara Joseph inaugurated the agitation.

“This is Lalur resident’s fight for the right to live.

The children of the Lalur should not be denied their right to fresh air and pure drinking water,” she said.

Tension prevailed in the area when a lorry carrying waste allegedly tried to drive into the samara pantal.

The Samara Samithy leaders alleged that the Corporation authorities were trying to create unnecessary tension during their peaceful protest. The relay sathyagraha would be continued until the corporation found a lasting solution for the issue, they said.

Meanwhile, the Samara Samithy took out a torchlight procession on Wednesday night protesting against the police action. It would observe a ‘black day’ on Thursday.

Athirappilly: State to seek Central nod

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala will write to the Centre seeking permission to start work on the Athirappilly hydroelectric project in Thrissur district.

The State Cabinet took the decision in this regard on Wednesday against the background of a notice issued by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests proposing cancellation of the environmental clearance granted for the project.

The notice issued early this month under the Environment (Protection) Act asked the Kerala State Electricity Board to show cause why the environmental clearance granted for the project should not be revoked.

The notice said that it had come to the Ministry’s notice that the project would lead to loss of valuable biodiversity and affect the primitive Kadar tribes in the project area.

The Ministry had cleared the163-MW project in the Chalakudy river in 2007 amid protests from environmental activists.

The State government maintains the stance that it has the right to proceed with the work on the project as the mandatory clearances has been obtained.

Solar energy is not an immediate answer, Kerala is facing a huge power shortage and we need more hydro projects for sure (hydro power is the cheapest one) But here it is not good on a scenic waterfall.
Our politicians are just go for Hydro Projects not beacus it is cheapest, But because of the money. unlike any other projects hydro power plants need a huge initial investment, a long time to complete - SO A BIG SOURCE FOR HAWALA!!!

Because our turism depends on Nature... don't distrub it....

Sameerbhai, eventhough the installation cost of Solar powar plants is high, still I prefer them to Hydro power plants considering the fact that the construction of dams needed for them will lead to the loss of forest patches and thus destroying the habitats of many species.

Sameerbhai, eventhough the installation cost of Solar powar plants is high, still I prefer them to Hydro power plants considering the fact that the construction of dams needed for them will lead to the loss of forest patches and thus destroying the habitats of many species.

In such a case... Where do u have waste lands in Kerala to building Solar ones...

I don't think.. its really easy...

One Proper Nuclear will do... :D

It is the fourth district to get 3G facility. Early it was launched in Kozhikode, Kannur and Kalpetta(Wayanad). Anyways Thrissur is the third SSA in this matter.

Hey all,:)

I am pleased to inform you that Dhanlaxmi Bank has started its work to build its corporate Office at Punkunnam Jn. I saw a big flex in the open area near the junction which said" Proposed site for Dhanlaxmi bank corporate office.".

Dhanlaxmi bank is on a roll i guess.. Lots of expansion in business...

but in my opinion there was no such need of a corporate office there in Punkunnam as they already had a sub-branch just few meters away from the proposed site.:ohno:
Its a huge plot and one can definitely see Punkunnam also growing as a corporate area in Thrissur.:)

It doesn't matter where they construct the new Head Office, but they badly need a good looking and huge Corporate Office, since the current Corporate Office at Naikanal has never looked like a Head Office of a Scheduled Bank.

Will Give a Boost to that Area for Sure

Does anyone has a Pics of the Proposed Building ?

Dhanalakshmi Bank to ramp up branch network

Thrissur-based Dhanalakshmi Bank will add 66 new branches during the current financial year to its network of 207, said PG Jayakumar, general manager.

Besides, it would upgrade 27 extension counters to branches, of which 16 would be in Kerala.

Speaking to the media here, he said 5 more regional offices would be added in the current financial year and the number of ATMs would be enhanced to 453.

The bank has also planned to shift its corporate office to a new 10-storied building, which is being constructed on 2 acres at Poonkunnam in Thrissur city.

As part of its microcredit scheme, Dhanalakshmi Bank has initiated a mini diary funding project in Idukki district. The project provides assistance to 200 mini diaries.

Under the scheme, individual diary owners need to form a five-member joint liability group and each member gets a loan of up to Rs 100,000. The milk produced by these groups is collected by the Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation.

According to Tilisa Gupta Kaul, head - microcredit, the bank would expand the diary funding projects to other states like Tamil Nadu, soon. In Kerala, two more similar projects have been identified. Of the total advances, micro credit accounts for 5 per cent.

The bank has also launched its rural housing finance under Grahashree loans in Kerala. This is also a part of the microfinance business under which it plans to fund 300-500 houses. The project is run with the support of self-help group members of the Nair Service Society.

Justin..

That was just my opinion because. they already had a renovated good looking branch in punkunnam and the area where they are going to build the new office is so huge and in the prime location that it could have been used for some other purposes like the building of new commercial buildings...which would bring in more people later on to invest in Thrissur... i am not saying this will not , but a commercia landmark is still missing out in thrissur.

just wanted to share the news thats all.. :)

i would try to get the pics...

as of now. no work has started.. they are just clearing the place as it was full of trees. its in Punkunnam Jn. te open area next to Shogun Films building

Hey all.

I recently went through Palace Road and saw certain works going on.
They are building dividers through the middle of the earlier developed roads from chembukkavu jn upto pulimootil silks.

Also to the members notice that FOOT GEAR has opened its 2nd showroom in the city just opposite to Chirayankandath Jewellery..

A new building has been completed next to Kalyan Silks in the same road.
Think that too is going to be a new showroom. Will have to wait and watch which one its going to be.:)

The work of the Patturaikkal Round-about is undergoing full-fledged work for the past few days.

had no developments. Its been quite few days now that the work was on full-swing and it ll be opened soon. This will be KR bakes' first outlet in Thrissur.

The works have begun from MO road. the initial layering has been done and the work is on full swing.

The cracks in the present concrete structure is first repaired with some sort of mixture and then 150mm of tarring is done in 2 layers.

According to Mathrubhumi News, The tarring work has taken a toll on the common man as there was no place from where they could board the buses in the Municipal Bus stand.

According to the news, the work will carry on for 40 days and within 40 days Thrissuites would be able to boast about the newly developed Swaraj Round Roads. :)

Way to go :)

I think it is not Thrissur Railway passenger Association . It is Kerala Passenger Association'
If it was Thrissur Passenger Assn. It will demand following demands
1. Thrissur should be developed as International Standars. Presently Thiruvanthapurm, Eranakulam, Alleppey, Palakkad, Chengannur. Calicut has got the Central nod for this by the act of their MP,s
2. 4th Platform should be established in Thrissur. Calicut got 4th platform last year.
3. Thrissur should have the watering facility and Coach maintenance facility with yard. It is very essential for starting express trains from Trichur Railway station. ( Thrissur and Kasargod are the only two Dist HQ Rly stations in Kerala without these facility. In the district it is in Guruvayur.)
4. Trichur should have escalator facility. 5 Escalators are now sanctioned to Kerala Trivandrum, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Palakkad and Chengannur.
5.Vanchinad Express should be extended to Guruvayur.
5. More express trains should started from/ ending at Guruvayur or at Trichur (after getting watering facility and yard facility)
6. Aluminium composite panel should be given for station strucuture. Presently Calicut got this one.

Dear Prakash Venkat,

I appreciate very much the updates which you give in this forum regarding Thrissur developments. People who are actually in Thrissur and those who visit the city frequently can enrich this forum immensely. Also those who are going there after a long interval are encouraged to give their opinions of the good as well as the bad which they noticed during their short or long stay there.

Modernization/beautification of traffic circles and Swaraj round, widening of roads, opening of new specialty shops, construction of new modern buildings/facilities/amenities etc. are all worthy of reporting and people who are away look forward to and express gratitude for such updates.

What is happening to the much touted Thekkinkad beautification, international university, zoo shifting, and model road extension to MG Road?

Thanks and good luck with these findings.

First Of all.... great work...:)
I just took the pics today of chembukkavu area...but now u have posted it... Its great... my pics were of very low quality cos i didn't have a digi cam.

Abt the tarring... This pic seems to be of the layer1 tarring.
The layer 1 will be tarred with much bigger size metals like this....and the 2nd layer would be even more smooth.

Prakash Venkat
January 25th, 2010, 04:13 PM
Today i went through the round and 1st layer tarring is complete in the MO road stretch and full tarring is complete from Bata till Manikandanaal. The stretch seems to be very smooth and comfortable to drive. It feels great to drive through that stretch. :)

One more good thing i found out was.. they have taken care of the roads not to be disturbed in the future..

What i meant was, during Pooram, Pandals would be held at manikandanaal, naduvilaal and naikanaal and usually they used to dig deep holes to held the pandal in position and then it used to be concreted which would then leave a depression there.. Now its interesting here, they have already made the holes for the pandals and have filled it with mud. Then they might make arrangements that would keep the roads untouched for a long time. Good to see some intelligent work coming up. :)

You need not beautify it again by planting grass. You just need to maintain it neatly by not allowing different parties to held their conference every another month.

‘Involve people in development’

‘Kochi’s development has spread

to Thrissur and Cherthala’

KOCHI: Union Minister of State for Agriculture K.V. Thomas said here on Tuesday that any development project in the State had to be implemented with people’s participation or it would fail.

The Minister was inaugurating ‘Kochi: 2020’, a seminar on the future development of Kochi. The seminar was organised by the Kerala Latin Catholic Association (KLCA), Varappuzha Archdiocese.

He said that the growth of Kochi had spread its root far and wide. The developments had spread to Cherthala in the south to Thrissur in the north and to even areas like Thodupuzha in the east.

Any plan for the city had to take into account these future possibilities, as the Minister pointed out that lack of people’s participation had derailed several projects.

He pointed to the most recent example of the metro rail project which had hit a roadblock. Lack of people’s participation also led to encroachment of the areas designated for development activities.

He contrasted two projects aimed at developing tourism facilities around Kochi. Whereas the Kumbalanghi project had succeeded in drawing people to the project, the initiatives in Fort Kochi had not developed as planned, Mr. Thomas said.

He pointed to several cases of encroachment in the Fort Kochi area. The speakers at the seminar also pointed to the lack of a plan for Kochi as a major impediment.

Mr. Thomas recalled that the government had allotted Rs. 10 crore to the Corporation of Cochin in 2002 to prepare a plan for the city.

S. Krishnakumar, former Union Minister; and former Chief Secretary of Tamil Nadu, P. C. Cyriac; were among the speakers at the seminar.

President of the KLCA’s Varappuzha unit V. A. Jerome and advisor Fr. Johnson D’cunha were among those present.

My Question is Did Thrissur gain from Cochin Development ?

I haven't seen any Cochin based Developing company making any big impacts in Thrissur..

Appart from the Nedumasherri Airport and Koratty Infopark.. There is nothing that i can see which made some kind of influence in Thrissur.

Rather I can see Thrissur Based Business man investing in cochin, Palakad and Coimbatore and Calicut...and making a bigger impact..

But these Meda and political parties stresses this everytime saying Thrissur has gained from Cochin Development....

I feel we have only developed with our own investing source.. We could have developed more.. if Cochin development really helped...

Two doubling works to end this year

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Railways will complete the doubling of the track between the congested Kayamkulam and Mavelikara and between Ernakulam and Mulanthuruthi stretches in the current year, Divisional Railway Manager Rajiv Dutt Sharma has said.

Speaking after unfurling the national flag and after inspecting the parade by the Railway Protection Force on the Divisional Railway Office premises here on Tuesday, Mr. Sharma said the doubling of other sections in the division were progressing.

The gauge conversion between Kollam and Punalur was in an advanced stage of completion. Traffic and terminal works were in progress in various places.

He said the division earned Rs.606.39 crore for the period ending December 2009 in the current financial year from the Rs.553.34 crore during the corresponding period in the last financial year.

The Ernakulam-New Delhi non-stop Duronto Express and the Tirunelveli-Happa Express announced in the budget would be introduced before the end of the year.

Mr. Sharma said the Kottayam railway station had been identified as an ‘Adarsh’ station and the Alappuzha, Ernakulam Junction, Thrissur, Kottayam, Thiruvalla and Kanyakumari stations as multi-functional complexes.

“We have spent about Rs.14.25 crore towards passenger amenities in 2008-09 and in the current financial year, it is likely to exceed last year’s. So far, we have spent Rs.9.16 crore from April to December,” he said. To improve the ticketing system, the unreserved ticketing system has been sanctioned under phase III at 45 stations.

Call to set up Grama Nyayalayas

Kochi: Kerala High Court Acting Chief Justice Kurian Joseph has appealed to the State government to give priority to setting up new courts and Grama Nyayalayas in the State. In his Republic Day Message, he said the “investment in judiciary is not a priority of the State.”

The request for five evening courts in Kozhikode, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram, for which the government had no financial commitment, had been pending for more than a year. The directive to set up a permanent Lok Adalat had not been complied with.

The Acting Chief Justice reminded the government that the State would be failing the Constitution and “doing a disservice to the people” by “not making its required investment in judiciary for the speedy disposal of cases.” He said the total budget allocation for the judiciary was only 0.49 per cent. The Grama Nyayalaya Act came into force on October 2, 2009. But no Nyayalaya had been set up. The High Court had taken all the required steps for setting up 150 Nyayalayas. But it was for the government to do the needful. As many as 106 courts were pending sanction before the government.

He said in the year 2009, the High Court had disposed of 78,958 cases. The Kerala Mediation Centre had settled 139 cases. The district legal services authorities had settled 24,160 cases out of the 87,769 cases considered by it.

Dear Vinod,
This TEAMS global village IT park is near mannuthy i guess. I have seen the ad in the paper months before. They also have a engineering campus within the area..
I think the board placed in diff places are just promoting the same. As of now, there are no news of any IT park coming up.

And i agree with you on your statement. "Thrissur has built everything on its own". Its not because of cochin. And even the IT park at koratty. Its as a result of the govt plan of setting up IT parks in all districts.

The reason for kochin's development is its diverse population. People have settled from various states and the demand for any business is vast. And that's the reason why all entrepreneur's from even thrissur are setting up their business there in kochi.

Recently Lord Krishna Builders from thrissur have set up their corporate office there at edappily. Cheloor is also setting up their corporate office in mg road.
Kalyan Silks has better showroom there in kochi. and LULU has done it all.

What are we gaining from all these.? No one is interested in investing money on any business in thrissur. Then how will our city develop?

Talks fail to yield consensus on Lalur

Thrissur: The consensus talks held on Tuesday at the initiative of the Kerala High Court to solve the Lalur issue failed to yield any result.

Representatives of the Thrissur Corporation, Kerala Sustainable Urban Develop Project, Pollution Control Board, district administration, the Lalur Malineekarana Viruddha Samara Samithy and the Ramky Enviro Engineers, which is the implementing agency of the landfill at Lalur participated in the meeting.

Removal of accumulated waste from Lalur garbage disposal yard and decentralisation of the waste management were the main demands raised by the samara samithy.

The Samithy alleged that the Thrissur Corporation had not initiated concrete measures so far to address the problem.

The City Corporation’s suggestions of engineered land filling and capping of dumped waste were not acceptable to the Samara Samity as they feared it would lead to more ecological tragedies. The Samara Samithy also alleged that the City Corporation had been neglecting the warnings of the District Pollution Control Board about the health problems faced by Lalur residents.

The Pollution Control Board had asked residents not to use water from sources within 250 metres of the trenching ground. Since 1996, 54 wells in the area had been sealed by the Board, it pointed out. Skin diseases, allergy and wheezing were common among people of all age groups, it noted.

The next round of talks would be held on February 17.

Meanwhile, the Samara Samithy decided to continue its agitation and relay sathyagraha. The Samara Sahaya Samithy formed to support Lalur agitation would observe a protest fast on February 9 in front of the Corporation office, they said.

The Samara Samithy threatened to forcibly lock on February 12, the gates of dump yard and treatment plant.

NEW DELHI: After putting itself on the map as an international tourist destination, God’s own country has run into some rough weather. The tourism ministry has axed funding of projects worth over Rs 17 crore, unimpressed by Kerala government’s tardy progress. This is the first time that the Centre has cut down funds for a state and is part of a larger move by the ministry to tighten monitoring norms.

In a recent review with the Kerala government, the ministry found that projects dating as far back as 2003 were still under execution. According to sources, the ministry has told the state that funds will not be released for projects sanctioned in 2004-2005 and it has asked the state to drop projects like development of Thekkinadu Maidan in Thrissur while certain projects like pilgrim tourism circuit has been severely curtailed.

Speaking to TOI, Kerala tourism secretary K Venu said, “This will not affect Kerala tourism or the tourist’s experience. This strong measure of the ministry ensures that states will come up with more responsible projects.”

The ministry had sanctioned about Rs 31.24 crore in 2007-2008 which was hiked to Rs 42.69 crore in 2008-2009. Sources said there was deep concern over lack of spending and lack of compliance by states. The ministry is planning to set up prioritisation meetings with states from February to expedite spending. The review will monitor progress of projects sanctioned. While the ministry has decided to cut off spending for any incomplete projects sanctioned before 2004-2005, it has also introduced stricter norms to ensure future compliance.

Conservation topped V.K. Baby’s agenda

Thrissur: Thrissur Collector V.K. Baby who has been transferred to the Non-Resident Keralite Affairs Department as its chief executive officer has initiated many development projects.

A host of projects initiated by him betray his grounding in key development concepts and academic orientation. When he assumed office on April 21, 2008, he told The Hindu that water conservation, poverty alleviation and wetland conservation would be placed high on the list of development priorities for the district. They were.

On the water management front, he initiated ‘Mazhapolima’, a participatory well recharge programme. As many as 5,000 wells were recharged at a cost of about Rs.1,500 per open well.

The programme was largely financed by households. ‘Mazhappolima’ included training for overseers of grama panchayats and publication of a technical manual.

Among the other notable projects implemented by him were a community-based disaster warning system; a portal (Thrissur Development Network) to involve citizens in the development process; programmes for rehabilitation of NRI returnees under which 60 people found jobs in the Gulf; reconstruction of the Kadangode Nayadi colony; development of pottery village at Mundathikode with a grant of Rs.15 lakh from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD); and setting up of a computer training centre for inmates of the Viyyur Central as part of Jeevika, an e-literacy programme.

A post-graduate in economics and has a doctorate in regulatory economics. This was his second innings in Thrissur.

He had served as Deputy Collector in the district 15 years ago.

New Thrissur Collector takes charge

Thrissur: Thrissur Collector A.T. James has said that the Kerala River Bank Protection and Regulation of Sand-Mining Act, 2001, should be reviewed and some of its provisions amended. He assumed office on Friday.

He told The Hindu that some of the provisions of the Act, especially those related to seizure or confiscation of sand, were unclear. “The Act needs to be amended keeping in mind realities about sand-mining. People have a right to procure sand. The government has a responsibility to fulfil the right. People’s housing needs cannot be ignored. There should be a balance between environmental protection and fulfilling people’s need for sand,” he said.

He said that streamlining the housing scheme under the Tsunami Rehabilitation Programme will be high on the list of priorities. “I would also like to explore projects that tap tourism potential in Thrissur,” he said.

He had served as District Collector in Palakkad and Kasaragod, Chief Executive Officer of the Non-Resident Keralite Affairs Department, general manager of the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation, additional director of IT Mission, Revenue Divisional Officer in Thiruvalla and Additional District Magistrate in Thiruvananthapuram.

He had played a major role in the implementation of the Kochi-Coimbatore-Karur pipeline project. Mr. James is the 35th Collector of Thrissur district.

ELTI may be set up in Thrissur

Thrissur: The proposed English Language Teaching Institute (ELTI), a State-level organisation for coordinating research and training activities in English language teaching (ELT), is likely to be located in Thrissur, Director of Public Instruction A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish has said.

He was addressing a three-day seminar on ‘Technology enhanced language learning: the way forward’ organised by the District Centre for English (DCE), which began here on Wednesday.

“Talks are on with the English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad, and the Union Ministry for Human Resource Development for setting up the ELTI, which would improve ELT in Kerala and help students build successful careers. The State government has extended support to the proposal. The ELTI could work in tandem with the DCE, which has branches in Neyyattinkara, Kollam, Thrissur and Kozhikode,” he added.

Inaugurating the seminar, Therambil Ramakrishnan, MLA, said that poor English communication skills were affecting the prospects of students from Kerala in tests at the national and international levels.

Basic philosophy

Delivering the keynote address, Kapil Kapoor, former Professor of English with the Centre for Linguistics and English, and Concurrent Professor with the Centre for Sanskrit Studies in the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, said that technology should not be allowed to change the basic philosophy of education even as it altered relations in classrooms and pedagogical practices.

“Education is more than mere collection of information. It is meant to give the student much more than a grasp of the subject,” he noted. He observed that the implications of technology-aided teaching involved a shift from the collective to the individual and from the object to the subject, and rejection of authority.

Taking part in a video conference, Japan-based English teacher Steven Herder called for effective use of the Internet for teaching.

“For teaching English, I use all free tools available such as Skype, Facebook, Twitter, Google Docs, Google Wae, Gmail, blogs and Personal Learning Networks. Thousands of pages of teaching material are available online as lessons, worksheets and videos. A vibrant and active community of language teachers are willing and wanting to share ideas with you online,” he said.

Reena Francis, head of DCE, also spoke.

About 100 teachers in English language from schools and colleges in the State took part in the seminar.

The speakers on Thursday will include Devaki Reddy (‘Internet in English as a Second Language classroom’), K. J. Varghese (‘Mobile-assisted language learning’), Anil Pinto (‘Rethinking technology in higher education’), Prabodha Chandran Nair (‘Language laboratory and computers in language learning situations’), K. Elango (‘Beyond classrooms, textbooks and teachers’), and Jaimon Joseph (‘Podcasting: a tech-savvy archive in classrooms’).

Something similar was proposed in Kollam or is this a different one?

Robin, the one which is coming in Kollam is Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) by central governement. It is coming up at Kulathupuzha.

Fifty acres of land was required for this project. The district administration had assured to provide the land.

The Foreign Language Institute would be set up at the 80-acre land at Kocharippa near Kulathupuzha. The SC/ST Department and Revenue Department will hand over the land for the project.

I think the one coming up at Thrissur is a state owned one especially related to English language.

Hi All,

As u all know, the initial works of Swaraj Round tarring is over ...and now they have started off with the final layering. Works are complete from MO road jn till Naduvilal Jn...It looks great.

It will take another week for the works to get over and all can have a tension free drive through the Swaraj Round after that. :)

Tarring works are going on even in the inner roads(poothole road- shankaraiiya jn), Guruvayur road, Pnkm. Almost all roads in the city are in good condition now. :)

All that is needed now is to maintain all these roads in perfect condition.

Hi Friends,

First of all a hearty welcome to all those lovers of Thrissur who joined recently to enrich this column or to get updates of all developments in Thrissur.

Many many thanks to Vinod and Prakash Venkat for their updates photos and observations.

The photo taken from Nehru Park with the Perinjeri building in the forefront and the high risers in its back ground looks great,
befitting a modern city.

Those high risers in the back ground are the new apartment buildings coming up in Korapath lane just behind Perijeri building.
There were some big ones under construction there when I visited Thrissur last. If I am not mistaken, the buildings u/c in Korapath lane belonged to Capital group and Cheloor builders
( building name- Seventh Avenue? )

Pleased to note the road resurfacing work is almost complete and the roads look nice clean and smooth. Hope they will remain in that condition for a long time.

Any updates on the major traffic islands at Westfort, Eastfort Punkunnam, Patturaickal, Sakthan etc.? any news on the international university?

Best regards

Ravi menon

‘Ensure time-bound completion of projects’

TAKING STOCK: District Collector A.T. James addresses a Mazhapolima review meeting in Thrissur on Thursday.

Thrissur: District Collector A.T. James has asked the local bodies to ensure the time-bound completion of Mazhapolima projects. He was addressing a meeting of local body members held here on Thursday to review the progress of the Mazhapolima projects.

Mazhapolima is a community-driven open well recharging programme envisaged by the district administration in association with panchayat raj institutions.

The project aims to recharge the wells using rainwater as a solution to the drinking water crisis.

“More voluntary organisations and individuals should be involved in the project in addition to selected beneficiaries,” the Collector said.

So far 3,500-odd wells had been recharged in the district, the officials said. Works on 2,158 projects are progressing.

Launched on July 4, 2008, ‘Mazhapolima’ has largely been financed by households. Funds have also been channelled from a few decentralised projects.

The overall goal of the programme is to improve the health and welfare of communities through improved access to drinking water. Though there are 4.5 lakh open wells in the district most of them go dry in summer. The Mazhapolima project helps to recharge the groundwater table.

Assistant Collector M.G. Rajamanikyam, Deputy Planning Officer P.P. Johny, Mazhapolima team leader K.G. Sajeev and operation manager Jos Raphael participated.

KAU projects for local bodies

Thrissur: A workshop on projects being formulated for local bodies was held at the Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) in Vellanikara on Thursday as part of ‘Susthira Samrudhi’ programme.

Representatives of 42 local bodies and officials took part in it.

Scientists presented 10 projects formulated for local bodies, including those on paddy farming, coconut cultivation, waste management, pisciculture, banana farming, vegetable seed production, mechanisation and animal husbandry.

Under Susthira Samridhi, scientists with KAU would help local bodies formulate integrated projects to enhance agricultural productivity and farm income.

45 projects

Scientists said they had formulated ideas for about 45 projects on various disciplines. An eight-member helpdesk would be formed for each discipline selected.

“Local bodies may discuss the projects and may get back to KAU for further technical guidance if they are approved,” a KAU official said.

Implementation

The programme would be implemented on a pilot basis at local bodies in Thrissur and later in other districts.

“The programme has been launched in view of the pressing need for increasing farm production and productivity by small and marginal farmers. The KAU would like to improve the interface between research and extension systems. This would strengthen the relationship between researchers and the rural masses,” KAU Vice-Chancellor K.R. Viswambharan said.

C. Ravindranath, Rajaji Mathew Thomas, MLAs, and P.V. Ravindran were among those present.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Nedumbana grama panchayat in Kollam district and the Adat grama panchayat in Thrissur district have won the Swaraj trophies for the best grama panchayat for 2007-08 and 2008-09, respectively.

The Pazhayannur block panchayat in Thrissur bagged the awards for the best block panchayat for both the years.

The Alappuzha district panchayat won the trophy for the best district panchayat in 2007-08.

The Kannur district panchayat came second.

No local body qualified for the awards for the district panchayats in 2008-09.

Best municipality

The Ottappalam municipality came first among the municipalities in 2008-09 and the Thripunithura municipality came second. No municipality got the award for the previous year.

Stringent criteria

Announcing the awards here on Monday, Minister for Local Self- Government Paloli Mohammed Kutty said the winners were selected on the basis of stringent qualifying criteria. No panchayat from four districts were found eligible for the district-level awards for 2007-08. In 2008-09, the grama panchayats from only six districts qualified.

Panchayat Day

The Minister said the awards would be presented during the Panchayat Day celebrations in Kannur on February 18 and 19.

MGNREGS

Replying to questions from the media, Mr. Mohammed Kutty said there was no need to entrust the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme to non-governmental agencies for implementation.

Kerala could not achieve the targeted number of man days because of low wages under the scheme and lack of common lands for development.

(It could provide work for only 30 days a year against the target of 100 days.)

Something to be proud off

Thrissur Church raises Rs 250 crore to buy Catholic Syrian Bank stake

MUMBAI: As if demonstrating a strong religious affiliation, the Catholic Church in Kerala has used its good offices to raise Rs 250 crore to buy a
substantial stake in Catholic Syrian Bank (CSB), which is on the radar of rival Federal Bank.

The development comes after the Catholic community, primarily the Syrian Catholics, recently goaded Thrissur Acrchbishop Andrews Thazhath to form an action committee under the banner of CSB Protection Committee and made him its chairman.

The Church has already garnered Rs 250 crore from NRI investors from the state to buy a substantial stake in the bank. The move is aimed at “protecting”the interests of Christian community. “The CSB Protection Committee has already garnered significant support from the community and has collected Rs 250 crore so far,” committee general convener Johny Chandy said.

Move assumes importance in the wake of RBI stipulation to the Thailand-based NRI businessman Surachan Chawla to bring down his stake to 10% from 24% by this March. And the Church is primarily eyeing this 14% that Mr Chawla has to offload. Mr Chawla is the single-largest shareholder in the troubled Thrissur-based bank currently.

The CSB Protection Committee has received commitments for another Rs 100 crore from a clutch of investors as well, which will enable it to acquire around 30% stake from existing investors in CSB, Mr Chandy said.

“We have mobilised Rs 250 crore from various investors and have commitments from four other parties to put in Rs 25 crore each. This should enable us to buy around 30% stake in the bank,” CSB Protection panel convener Mr Chandy said.

The CSB Protection Committee is holding talks with various parties to raise necessary funds, Mr Chandy said, adding it has kept RBI informed about its plans. “We are confident that we will succeed in our efforts in the next few months,” Mr Chandy informed.w

The Church is trying to gain control of around 14% stake of Mr Chawla and another 15% from three Mauritius-based private equity funds — AIF Capital, Garfmore Private Equity and Siguler Guff — together hold about 15%.

Last year, Kochi-based Federal Bank had expressed its interest to take over the unlisted CSB, but the move is yet to fructify following differences over valuations. Other major stakeholders of CSB are engineering major L&T and Edelweiss and together they have 5%, Federal Bank also holds 5% stake, while a group of local investors together hold around 15%.

Given this, if the Church manages to buy the stakes of Mr Chawla and the Mauritius-based PEs, it would enable the community to ensure an indirect control on the management of the bank. The Church already enjoys a significant control over the bank through various investors, who would stand for community’s interest.

After Federal Bank announced its plan to take over CSB, the Syrian Catholic Church in general and the Thrissur Archdiocese in particular, were riled at the move and were very vocal in opposing it.

Biodiversity in danger?

Last week, the Union Minister for Environment, Mr Jairam Ramesh, told journalists in Kochi that Athirapally, the site of the proposed 163 MW, Rs 675-crore hydroelectric power project, is another Silent Valley, rich in biodiversity, which needs to be protected, and that the State should look for alternative proposals for power generation. The implication is that the Centre will go back on earlier clearances for the hydel project.

The Minister said that the permission issued earlier for the project was withdrawn after he assumed office. The State Government has also been asked to stop all work related to the project until an expert committee for approval looks into the issue, he said.

The Athirapally hydel project is planned 35 km east of Chalakudy town, across the Chalakudy river, along the Chalakudy-Anamalai inter-State highway in the Vazhachal forest division of Thrissur district. The project got the first clearance from the Central Government in 1998, which was challenged legally by environmentalists. In 2005, after a fresh environment impact study, it was cleared again. The Kerala High Court intervened and asked the Kerala State Electricity Board for a fresh clearance, which it got for a third time in 2007.

Environmentalists claim that Athirapally is a one-of its-kind riparian ecosystem in Kerala. The proposed project will affect 138.6 ha of forestland, dry up the Athirapally waterfall and affect tribal families living in the area, particularly settlements of the Kadar tribe, comprising around 80 families.

V.S. Vijayan, Chairman of the Kerala State Biodiversity Board and former Director of the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON), Coimbatore, has been quoted in Down to Earth magazine as affirming that the Vazhachal forest division is the second most biodiverse area in the State. The International Bird Association has declared it an ‘Important Bird Area' and the Asian Nature Conservation Foundation has recommended that the area should be declared a sanctuary or a national park, he points out.

The Wildlife Trust of India says it represents one of India's best elephant conservation efforts. “Any disruption to this fragile ecosystem will spell disaster,” says Vijayan.

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) defines “biological diversity” as the “variability among living organisms from all sources including, inter alia, terrestrial, marine and other aquatic ecosystems and the ecological complexes of which they are part; this includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems.”

The CBD says that biodiversity – the variety of life on Earth – is essential to sustain the living networks and systems that provide us all with health, wealth, food, fuel and the vital services our lives depend on.

Increasing human activity is robbing the Earth of its biodiversity. “These losses are irreversible, impoverish us all and damage the life support systems we rely on every day,” the CBD notes.

The biodiversity we see today, says the CBD, is the fruit of billions of years of evolution, shaped by natural processes and, increasingly, by the influence of humans. It forms the web of life of which we are an integral part and upon which we so fully depend. “This diversity is often understood in terms of the wide variety of plants, animals and microorganisms. So far, about 1.75 million species have been identified, mostly small creatures such as insects. Scientists reckon that there are actually about 13 million species, though estimates range from three to 100 million.”

The United Nations has declared 2010 to be the International Year of Biodiversity. It is a celebration of life on earth and of the value of biodiversity for our lives. As part of worldwide celebrations, a National Conference on Impact of Climate Change on Biodiversity of Insects and Environment will be held in Coimbatore at the Bharathiar University during March 15-16. Organised by the Department of Zoology, School of Life Sciences, the conference venue – Coimbatore – is situated in the Western Ghats, as are Athirapally and Silent Valley.

The Western Ghats are known for the uniqueness of its flora and fauna. India is one among the 12 mega biodiversity countries of the world and 80 per cent of the insects are endemic in India. However, insects and plants are becoming extinct because of habitat loss, over-hunting, pollution, overpopulation and the threat of global climate change.

The CBD gives us examples of success stories of how communities, governments and organisations have been able to achieve the 2010 Biodiversity Target at different levels. For instance, Irma Battista, an “urban farmer” in Vancouver, Canada, pursues a permaculture approach to create an edible landscape of herbs, berries and vegetables. The entire permaculture approach, says Battista, is based on creating bio-diversity and a healthy, self-sustaining environment that requires far less time, work, and financial investment than a lawn.

Trees For Life, a South Australian not-for-profit volunteer organisation, was started in 1982 by community members who wanted to restore the State's overcleared landscape.

Starting with 15,000 native seedlings grown in 1982, Trees For Life volunteers now grow around 1 million seedlings each year.

It, now, boasts over 10,000 members and recycles its income from membership fees, donations and fundraising back into running comprehensive revegetation and vegetation protection programmes.

As these examples show, biodiversity can and must be protected and regenerated. The Athirapally project offers an opportunity for Kerala to think of creative solutions for its energy needs, without destroying the State's precious biodiversity.

I think this is true.. We does not want this project

54 varsities with Arjun nod unfit
CHARU SUDAN KASTURI
New Delhi, Feb. 17: Fifty-four of the 61 deemed universities that were approved during Arjun Singh’s tenure as human resource development minister between 2004 and 2009 are unfit for the tag, an HRD ministry review has found.

The findings of the confidential review report, accessed by The Telegraph, are an indictment of India’s education policy makers, and expose the extent of the rot in higher education standards they allowed over the past five years.

The report also confirms that barring seven exceptions, India’s best deemed universities earned the tag in the years before higher education offered lucrative business opportunities that could be milked through corruption.

The probe, ordered by HRD minister Kapil Sibal within days of taking over from Arjun last year, divided 126 deemed universities into three categories based on its findings. The remaining four of India’s 130 deemed varsities did not participate in the review.

The institutions were assessed by the probe panel on nine parameters — ranging from their vision for the varsity and compliance with University Grants Commission norms to research output and levels of innovation employed.

In an affidavit submitted before the Supreme Court last month, the ministry had disclosed a list of 44 that the review found were incapable of ever meeting standards required of deemed universities.

But the review report and the deemed universities in the other two categories — 44 unfit for the tag but deserving a three-year lifeline and 38 “good” institutes fit for the tag — have been kept a closely-guarded secret.

Understandably, perhaps Government institutions dominate the list of 38 deemed universities found fit by the review panel — 21 of the names on this list are public universities, while 17 are private.

The list of “good” deemed universities predictably includes some of the country’s finest institutions — both public and private.

The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai and other top research institutions and the Birla Institute of Science and Technology in Pilani and Mesra (Jharkhand) are on this list.

But a study of when these institutions received the deemed tag — and with that the power to award degrees — reveals that only a minuscule minority of quality varsities joined this league under Arjun.

India had 69 deemed varsities before he took over as HRD minister and today has 130 — no new institutions have received the tag after the UPA came back to power a second time. But the near doubling in number of deemed varsities added only seven institutions to the “good” league, according to the report.

The seven include two government institutions — the North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology in Itanagar and the Kerala Kalamandalam in Thrissur.

The other five are private — Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management (Visakhapatnam), International Institute of Information Technology (Bangalore), IIS University (Jaipur), Chennai Mathematical Institute, and Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (Howrah).

The Ramakrishna Mission institute is Bengal’s sole deemed university.

The remaining 54 of the 61 deemed universities approved by Arjun’s ministry are unfit for the tag, the review has said.

Of these, 17 are on the list of 44 institutions deemed unfit but given the three-year lifeline to meet required standards.

The rest 37 do not even deserve the lifeline, the review has found.

Favourite spots: Wetland birds flocking to a kole wetland near Thrissur in Kerala. Hunting of wetland birds, including migratory species is rampant in many parts of the State. The ‘kole' wetlands in Thrissur and Vembanad Lake, extending up to Kottayam, Alappuzha and Ernakulam districts, are known to be a favourite hunting spot of poachers. The birds often killed are egrets, herons and spoonbills. Hunting of birds is an offence under the Indian Wildlife Act, entailing imprisonment up to seven years. —

I expect this kole wetland in thrissur to be protected and open for tourism but without distrubing the ecosystem...

Six more technolodges sanctioned in State

KOCHI: Buoyed by the success of the pilot project of the Technolodge scheme in Kadakkal and Perinad panchayats in Kollam district, the State government has accorded sanction for six more such rural ‘smart info hubs.’

The scheme, with Kerala State IT Infrastructure Ltd. (KSITIL) as the implementing agency, aims at spreading the information-technology-enabled service and the business process outsourcing industries into rural areas and bringing down infrastructure costs.

The new technolodges will come up at Veliyam, Anchal and Poothakulam panchayats in Kollam district; Thirumady panchayat in Ernakulam; Kodakara in Thrissur; and Mayyil in Kannur.

The Kadakkal and the Perinad grama panchayats had offered office space of 2,000 sq.ft each for the project. The KSITIL refurbished and converted them into built-up smart office space and handed them over to Accentia for business. In November last, the Managing Director of KSITIL submitted a proposal for the launch of six more centres. The technolodges are expected to bring down drastically the cost of operations.

Lalur: meet of technical experts to be held

‘Unavailability of land to dispose of waste main issue’

Thrissur: A meeting of officials and technical experts in waste management will be convened soon to evolve an action plan to solve the Lalur garbage issue. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Corporation authorities and the Lalur Malineekarana Viruddha Samara Samithi here on Monday.

Removal of accumulated waste from Lalur garbage disposal yard and decentralisation of waste management were the main demands raised by the samara samithy.
Biogas plants

Mayor R. Bindu said that the City Corporation had initiated concrete steps to address the issue. “The Corporation has already taken steps to install nine biogas plants in various localities. Strict instruction has been given to health officials to ensure the segregation of waste at the source.”

The Mayor pointed out that the unavailability of land to dispose the accumulated waste from Lalur was the main challenge before the Corporation.

“A consensus should be evolved in solving the issue. We will urge the Minister for Local Administration Paloli Mohammed Kutty to participate in the meeting,” the Mayor said.

Welcoming the decision to call a meeting of experts, the Samara Samithi said that the Corporation should have a waste management policy with long-term vision. “Lalur residents cannot anymore bear the burden of the garbage generated by the entire city. The agitation is our fight for the right to live. Children of Lalur should not be denied their right to fresh air and pure drinking water,” said Samara Samithi Chairman T.K. Vasu.

The Samara Samity will continue its relay sathyagraha until the Corporation started removing the garbage from the yard, he said. The relay sathyagraha completed 71 days on Monday.

“It is not a problem of Lalur alone. Waste management has become a burning issue in other parts of the State too. The solution should be a role model for the entire State. The Corporation’s suggestions of engineered land filling and capping of dumped waste are not acceptable as it will lead to more ecological tragedies,” Mr. Vasu said.

Can any of our forumers provide a way to solve this issue.. ?

Hi Friends,

This is my take on this garbage disposal problem.

Thrissur is not the only city in the world or even India or even Kerala which is confronting this problem.

In Kerala, the only other city where this problem is defying a solution is Kochi ( to the best of my knowledge )

Understandably the problem has arisen from the density of population, the expansion of the city and acute shortage of suitable land- fill sites. So I would guess this is a common problem in countries with high density of population.

Having said this, in my view, Thrissur City officials must find out how this problem has been addressed in other cities. Perhaps there is a lesson or two which Thrissur can learn from the experiences and experiments of these other cities. Start with other cities in Kerala and move on to other Indian cities facing similar challenges. Bombay/Calcutta/N Delhi etc must be facing the same problem several times bigger in size.

In the city I live in western Canada, for several more years this will not be a problem because there is plenty of land around the city. Areas have been systematically identified and earmarked for garbage disposal. The garbage disposal is also systematic in the sense only authorized vehicles have access to such places and tested procedures are in place for dispersing garbage. In addition there is awareness and recycling on a large scale. So I suppose the only thing Thrissur can copy from here is the awareness campaign and recycling.

Education of citizens/ sorting/recycling/ technology
(Incinerator?)etc. seem to be the only solution.

Not only Trichur and Cochin, this garbage problem is evident everywhere.

In Kottayam, there is a place called Vadavathoor, which canbe called 'The Lalur/Brahmapuram of Kottayam.

We can't single out any group for the responsibility. It'll be good if every house has a place to treat/fill the biodegradable waste in the backyard itself, I suppose.

The citizens of Kerala, the so called God's own country have no civic sense at all, thanks to, their 'easy going' nature.:bash:

We see rivers, wetlands, lakes etc. as places to dump all sorts of wastes - plastic bottles, the leftovers of food items, mutton, chicken, beef etc. are put inside plastic bags etc. and thrown into the rivers etc. :bash:
(Thank god, I'm a Veg).:)

There was a period when rivers etc. were treated as God maintaining the sanctity of them.

By resorting to such acts, we are digging our own grave yard.

But the rest points which you have mentioned can be taken into consideration..

I think it's high time State Government give much importance you waste disposal in all major cities in our State..

Canal and other waste disposed sites in cities like Thrissur, cochin, calicut, tvm, kollam kottayam and others should be we cleaned.

This should be the first step of beautifying KERALA city.

You are correct, Vinod. We cannot boast that we are "God's own country" unless we clean and beautify our water bodies. It is shame that people of our state encroaches and reclaims river, lake and canals for their selfish and greedy needs. Lakes and canals have become the garbage dumping yards of some of the corporations.

God has given us so much of water bodies, but the people of our state are spoiling and killing those water bodies.

All the lakes and rivers in the state have shrunk alarmingly as well as pollutted. There should be a mass movement as well as government initiative to protect our lakes and rivers.

A satisfactory Budget for Kottayam: Jose K. Mani

overbridge at Thellakom

Budget neglected the Palakkad-Shoranur-Ernakulam sector: passengers’ union

KOTTAYAM: Kottayam has much to be happy about the Railway Budget 2010 proposals, according to Jose K. Mani, MP. The district has bagged the only railway overbridge (ROB) sanctioned for the State in addition to two new trains and allocation for doubling works on two stretches.

According to him, the budget has earmarked Rs.40 lakh for the ROB gate no: 30 at Thellakom. The plea for an ROB at Caritas at Thellakom has been in the air for the past six years.

The State government had earmarked Rs.2.5 crore for the approach road since 2007. With the Budget earmarking Rs.40 lakh for the ROB, the works are expected to move fast, brining down the pressure on the M.C. Road and also easing the travel for those heading for the Kottayam Medical College Hospital.

According to Mr. Mani, in spite of the delay in completing the acquisition work for the other two ROBs—the one at Kumaranallore (gate no: 36) and Moolavattom (gate no: 33)—the Budget has allocated Rs.25 lakh and Rs.50 lakh respectively for the works.

The Jan Sathabdi introduced from Kozhikkode to Thiruvananthapuram will pass through Kottayam and according to latest reports, the MEMU which runs between Ernakulam and Kollam would also pass through Kottayam.

According to Mr. Mani, though works are delayed, the doubling works on the 24-km Mulanthuruthy-Kuruppanthara stretch and the Kuruppanthra-Chingavanom stretch have found mention in the Budget, with the works getting an allocation of Rs.20 crore each.Mr. Mani also felt satisfied about the overall impact of the Budget.

The Thrissur Railway Passengers’ Association has termed the Railway Budget - 2010 disappointing.

P. Krishnakumar, general secretary of the association, said that the only benefit for the State was the final go-ahead given for the coach factory at Kanjikode and a fresh water bottling plant at Thiruvananthapuram.
No long-distance trains

“No new long-distance daily train that benefits Kerala has been sanctioned. Despite persistent demands, the Railway Ministry has not extended the Kannur-Shoranur passenger train (616) to Thrissur and the Coimbatore-Thrissur passenger (636) train to Kochi. Introduction of Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) services in all electrified stretches in the State was expected. But the Ministry has sanctioned only a single MEMU service for the State, on the Ernakulam-Kollam stretch, and neglected the Palakkad-Shoranur-Ernakulam sector,” he said.

Kerala seeks inclusion of paddy lands in Central food scheme.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala government has appealed to the Centre to relax the norms for inclusion of paddy lands in the Central food security scheme so that the Kuttanad region and the kole lands in Thrissur district could be brought under its ambit, Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Rathnakaran told the Assembly on Monday.

Responding to a calling attention motion moved by Murali Perunelli (CPI-M), the Agriculture Minister said the State wanted the Centre to waive the norm that only paddy holdings having a contiguous extent of 50,000 hectares could be included in the Central scheme. In Kerala, paddy fields were fragmentary in nature, but the different regions of paddy cultivation such as the Kuttanad region and the kole lands in Thrissur district were quite distinctive and should be considered as one contiguous region. The Centre had not so far responded favourably to the State's plea, he said.

The Minister said the State had also been trying to get the Centre to agree to reclassifying paddy produced in Kerala as ‘A' class. The Centre had classified paddy produced in Kerala as ‘B' class resulting in substantial loss in Central assistance. The Opposition should join the government in getting the State's demands accepted by the Centre, the Agriculture Minister said.

Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said in response to a calling attention motion moved by Therambil Ramakrishnan (Congress) that he was ready to convene an all-party meeting to resolve the dispute over solid waste disposal in the Thrisusr Corporation area. He had actually convened a meeting on March 10, but had called it off on being informed that Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty was holding talks with the parties concerned on the issue, the Chief Minister said.

He informed the House that as many as 25 urban local bodies had commissioned solid waste processing plants and another 11 were in the process of doing so. The government's effort was to treat solid wastes at source in a decentralised manner, Mr. Achuthanandan added.

Lalur samithi to seek Chief Minister's intervention for public debate

Thrissur: In view of the Kerala High Court's directive to the Thrissur Corporation on decentralisation of waste management, Lalur Samara Sahaya Samithy has decided to seek Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan's intervention to call for a public discussion on Lalur issue.

The High Court had on last Friday approved the suggestions evolved in the consensus talk between the Thrissur Corporation, Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project, Pollution Control Board, district administration and Lalur Malineekarana Viruddha Samara Samithi.

The suggestions included decentralisation of waste management, setting up of biogas plants and small waste treatment plants and segregation of waste at the source. The court had also asked the City Corporation to file an action taken report in July.

Air, water pollution

A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court had intervened in the Lalur issue on a public interest petition filed by social activist P.D. Joseph. The petitioner had alleged that unscientific disposal of garbage at Lalur dump yard was causing air and water pollution in the area and diseases amongst residents.

“The Corporation's waste management should be decentralised. Incinerators and biogas plants should be installed in all the 52 wards in Corporation limits,” the petition said.

Lalur Malineekarana Viruddha Samara Samithi chairman T.K. Vasu said that Lalur residents were happy that the High Court recognised their long-pending demand for decentralisation of waste management.

“The City Corporation should initiate urgent steps to remove the accumulated waste from the dump yard. If the huge garbage mounds are not cleared before onset of monsoon, the crisis that occurred in last June will re-surface,” he pointed out.

Waste water seeped from the flooded trenching ground had made life miserable for 40 families living in the area during last monsoon. M. Peethambaran, general convenor of the samara sahaya samithi, said it would organise a programme to create awareness among the public about decentralised waste management, its possibilities, suggestions of the High Court on Lalur issue and the City Corporation's stand on the issue.

Satyagraha continues

It will also mobilise a movement led by socio-cultural leaders to urge the Corporation to find an urgent solution considering the seriousness of the issue.

Meanwhile, a relay sathyagraha by the Lalur Samara Samithi completed 86 days on Tuesday.

Best cities to live, invest and earn in

New Delhi: India is a land of paradox, it is said, and even the rapid economic development in the last few years hasn't helped in managing the contradictions.

A recent survey has now revealed that cities such as Gurgaon, that are most preferred to earn a living and where job growth is the fastest, are actually not among the best places to live.

According to data compiled by economics research firm Indicus Analytics on residences, earnings and investments, none of the ten cities in the 'reside-in' list figure in the 'earn-in' list of places with most employment opportunities.

Moreover, the four metros of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai did not figure among the ten best cities to reside, earn or invest. However, Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai were among the cities preferred by millionaires to spend their life.

The list of 'earn-in' cities has been topped by Gurgaon, followed by Silvaasa, Noida, Faridabad, Rupnagar, Chandigarh, Surat, Bangalore, Gandhinagar and Pune.

The best cities to reside are Kochi, Kozhikode, Shimla, Thiruvananthapuram, Mysore, Goa, Thrissur, Pondicherry, Kannur and Thiruvalur. Interestingly, five of these cities are in God's own country - Kerala. In fact, Shimla is the only northern city in this list, while Chandigarh, among the few fully planned cities in the country, failed to find a place.

The invest-in index was topped by Silvassa, followed by Coimbatore, Ludhiana, Shimla, Noida, Gurgaon, Gandhinagar, Surat, Itanagar and Chandigarh.

Indicus considered six parameters -- health, education, environment, safety, public facilities and entertainment -- for preparing the 'reside-in' index. The 'earn-in' list was based on growth rate of employment, per capita income and listings on popular job websites.

Bins to be distributed for source segregation of waste in Thrissur

Kudumbasree workers to collect and transport the waste

Corporation to submit action-taken report to High Court in July

Thrissur: Thrissur Corporation will distribute separate bins for collecting organic and non-organic waste as part of its source segregation efforts.

Mayor R. Bindu told reporters here on Thursday that in the initial phase bins would be distributed to 14 divisions of the City Corporation.

“Under the Rs.2.5-crore project, 24,000 bins each of white and green colour will be distributed to households. Green bins are meant for biodegradable waste and white for non-biodegradable waste. The project will be implemented from April 1,” the Mayor said.

Kudumbasree workers will collect the segregated waste and transport to the treatment plants in covered vehicles.

Equipment

Under the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development project, the Corporation will also procure hand carts and sweeper's carts with containers for primary waste collection and tippers, three-wheelers, dumper containers and duel dumper placers for secondary collection.

The distribution of bins and vehicles will be inaugurated by Minister for Local Administration Paloli Mohammed Kutty on Sunday.

Biogas plants

The Mayor said that the work on nine biogas plants in various places in the Corporation limit, meant for decentralisation of waste management, would be completed in three months.

The City Corporation will submit an action taken report at the High Court on the Lalur garbage issue in July, she said.

The Rs.5-crore development work at the waste treatment plant in Lalur is progressing well, the Mayor said.

“The construction of a compost plant has already been completed. About 75 per cent of the work on drainage is also over. Training has been provided to the Kudumbasree units for handling windrow compost units. Other facilities under the project will be completed soon,” the Mayor said.

Hi vinod.

Sorry i was abroad for the past 1 month regarding my job training.
Just landed today morning and now just signed in to see the latest developments of our city.

There is not much of a difference.
All the projects are in the same phase. Even the Lalur issue has not got any relief.

The Patturaikkal Junction round about was under work when i left and it is still in the same shape.
Dont know what exactly the corporation is doing. Just simply spending lot of money unnecessarily.

The only change i felt was in the palace road where the lamp posts which where almost on the middle of the roads and blocked traffic has now been removed. The guruvayur road from punkunnam has been completely tarred and its looking much wider.

I-square mall is in the same state. No progress as such. KR bakes which was almost ready still remains closed.

Just went outside in the evening and could find only this much.

The new proposed projects seems promising. But as far as the govt is concerned dont think the projects will start any soon.

The ignorance of thrissur still remains the same.

Attraction for tourists:The premises of the Poomala dam near Thrissur where a beautification project has been implemented.
Thrissur: Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan will designate on Sunday the premises of the Poomala Dam as a tourist centre. The designation marks the completion of a project of the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) to beautify the premises of the dam, 12 km east of Thrissur city.
The Rs. 50 lakh project, launched in 2008, involved construction of a walkway with handrail spanning 600 metres; a community hall that can accommodate 300 persons; a cafetaria; and toilet facilities. The entire site has state-of-the-art lighting design.
“An eco-friendly design has been chosen,” said M. M. Vinod Kumar, architect for the project.
Poomala promises to be a place to unwind for city-dwellers. The hills near the dam offer a breath-taking view of the city. “The dam site can now be an ideal venue for student camps,” Mr. Kumar added.
The Poomala dam, managed by the Minor Irrigation Department, is 95.40 metres above mean sea level (AMSL). A division weir was constructed in the Poomala valley in 1939. The Poomala reservoir scheme was commissioned in 1968. ‘Poomala' is believed to have been derived from the word, ‘Poovam', a tree. Old-times say the hills were once full of Poovam trees.

Lalur: relay satyagraha completes 100 days

Thrissur: The relay satyagraha by the residents of Lalur, Thrissur Corporations' garbage disposal site, completed 100 days on Tuesday. Addressing the satyagraha on Tuesday, poet K.G. Sankarapillai said that the Thrissur Corporation had been insensitive towards the problems faced by the Lalur residents. “Lalur has been forced to bear the burden of the garbage generated by the entire city. The ruling parties had turned a blind eye to this two-decade old problem,” he said.

Lalur Malineekarana Virudha Samara Samithi chairman T.K. Vasu said that the samithi would continue the agitation. “The Chief Minister has called for a discussion on the issue on March 29. We are expecting a lasting solution to Lalur's woes. Further course of the agitation will be decided after the meeting,” he said. Meanwhile, the samithi demanded the removal of the accumulated garbage from the dump yard before the onset of monsoon.

“The crisis that occurred in last June will resurface if the Corporation failed to take urgent steps to remove the garbage,” he said.

Waste water seeped from the flooded trenching ground last monsoon had made life miserable for the 40 families living in the area.

Budget: Rs.15 lakh for wind, solar power units

Thrissur Corporation to produce 20 kV power

Rs.50 lakh has been set apart for source segregation of waste

Rs.10 lakh has been earmarked for setting up an LPG crematorium

Thrissur: The annual budget of the Thrissur Corporation for the year 2010-11 has proposed to utilise alternative energy sources to generate 20 kV power.

The budget, presented by Deputy Mayor M. Vijayan on Thursday, allocated Rs.15 lakh for setting up wind and solar power plants at the Pullazhi Kole fields.

The detailed feasibility study conducted by ANERT estimated the cost for producing 20 kV power at Rs.54 lakh.

With 75 per cent subsidy available for power generation using alternative power sources, the allotment in the budget would be sufficient for the project, the Deputy Mayor said.

He said the City Corporation would take up more such projects if the pilot project was successful.

Thrissur Corporation is the only local body in the State which directly controls power distribution.

Surplus budget

The budget, which envisages a total income of Rs.173. 98 crore and expenditure of Rs.170.17 crore leaves a surplus of Rs.3.81 crore.

With a cash balance of Rs.60 lakh, the total surplus during the year is estimated at Rs.4.41 crore.

The budget has allocated Rs.50 lakh for source segregation of waste. I

t has also earmarked Rs.40 lakh for education and Rs.40 lakh for welfare of differently-abled children.

The Corporation has promised to implement projects worth Rs.4 crore for ensuing efficient distribution of drinking water.

A Rs.4.86-crore project has been envisaged to rehabilitate people living in ‘purambokku'.

Tax collection

The budget has earmarked Rs.10 lakh for setting up an LPG crematorium and Rs.2 crore for development of West Fort.

A sum of Rs.50 lakh has been earmarked for the construction of Shakthan Thampuram Vegetable market.

The budget expects the tax collection to go up to Rs.19.80 crore.

This Budget does not look like a City Corporation budget statement.. Looks more like a Village Budget.. I can't digest this.. Kerala's Fourth Biggest City which is promising too.. leaves a future like this....

I hope People understands and will speak against this.. and ask them..

Why we have a Corporation ?

All cities in other states of India are growing with long vision and proper planning. If Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram have grown to big cities, it's due to their potential, not due to the planning or long vision of the polititians. So, why should we need these national wates?

You are aboslutely, correct. Justin. Most of our cities seem to be developed because of the private investments not because of the vision of any political leaders.

They do not have any vision literally, they are blind. Otherwise, they will not behave like this even after seeing the development projects and plans of other state cities and countries.

Unfortunately, our cities are in Kerala - "Politician's own country".

Ya really...

If at least a few of the projects mentioned above had been completed our city would have been developed.
Anyways. hope all these projects will happen in the near future.

In the mean while, Behsaad group, Qatar owned by Padmashree CK Menon from our very own thrissur has made investment plans worth 1000 crores in Qatar, India

Among the major investments, A 5-star hotel worth 250 crores will be built in KOchi.

For thrissur, its mr. KC Menon's dream project.
Thrissur will have its international educational institution with British affiliation. The school will have classes according to the British schooling system and the students from there will get direct entry to the Oxford and other great universities in the UK.

We can be proud that a thrissurite is doing wonders across the globe.

CSB shareholder Chawla may sell 14.5% stake

Non-resident Indian (NRI)-businessman Surachan Chawla is likely to offload 14.5 per cent of the stake held in Kerala-based Catholic Syrian Bank (CSB) to a clutch of foreign investors this week to conform with a Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) directive.

The board of CSB is meeting tomorrow to consider the sale. Chawla, who holds 24.5 per cent stake in the private sector bank, was asked to bring down his holding to 10 per cent by the central bank, as it was not happy with a single party holding a significant stake. “The board is meeting tomorrow to consider the sale or transfer of close to 15 per cent shares of Chawla. This is because RBI wants him to reduce holding to 10 per cent,” said CK Gopinath, director, CSB.

Though Gopinath declined to divulge further details about the deal, it is understood that the Chawla has talked to 10-15 Bangkok-based NRIs to sell less than 1 per cent stake to each.

The local catholic community under the chairmanship of archbishop, had formed an action committee and received commitments for around Rs 250 crore to buy Chawla’s shares and, thereby, ensure control of the lender.

The group was still continuing negotiations with the NRI investor, sources said.

Last year, Kochi-based Federal Bank had expressed its interest to take over the unlisted CSB, but the move did not take off following differences over valuations. After Federal Bank announced its plan to take over CSB, the Syrian Catholic Church in general and the Thrissur Archdiocese, in particular, were riled at the move and were very vocal in opposing it.

Three Mauritius-based private equity funds — AIF Capital, Garfmore Private Equity and Siguler Guff — together hold about 15 per cent. Other major stakeholders of CSB are engineering major L&T and Edelweiss, and together they have 5 per cent. Federal Bank also holds 5 per cent stake, while a group of local investors together hold around 15 per cent.

CSB officials denied media reports that Religare Enterprises has made a Rs 800-crore offer to acquire CSB. When contacted, Religare Enterprise’s Group Chief Operating Officer Sachindra Nath refuted the report, saying it was “absolute rubbish”.

Hope that this bank roots will stay in Thrissur soil itself

Hey all.
Had a look at the new under construction Malabar Gold showroom in MG road.
Its big in length. Its huge. A good venture to develop the other parts of MG Road.

Another construction work is going on the site opposite to Modern Silks, near Srikrishna sweet house. It was earlier the car parking area of Modern silks but the whole business there seems to be dull and that has given way to new projects at those locations.
Malabar Gold has come up and lets hope the new building coming up will be some showroom of any company.
But the way it looks it should be huge. May be a Mall.
That would be great boost for that area, but doubts remain because I-square mall is coming up just few meters away.

The construction works of the Shaktan statue park near paramekkavu temple is going on in brisk pace. Its looking good. Once it gets completed it would be another landscaped beauty.

The footpaths are under construction all around the town and once completed it should be great to look at our town. along with the sign boards now at almost all places indicating the roads and their directions.

patturaikkal roundabout is also under construction but now has slowed down.
may be the Co-op is concentrating in geting the footpaths done before pooram. Anyways. slowly and steadily our city is looking better every next day.

But that shouldn affect places like lalur. The problem there also should be solved soon.

The use of internet may be an urban phenomenon, but only 27 per cent of India’s urban population admits to have accessed the medium at some point in time. The number of those accessing the worldwide web routinely is just a tiny fraction — 7 per cent — of the total urban population. And, if the numbers are rising fast, it is the smaller towns that are showing the way, with the likes of Kolhapur, Bellary, Thrissur and Panipat having more internet users than the top eight metros put together.

A largescale annual study on internet usage patterns across urban India, conducted by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), has revealed that of the 71 million “claimed” internet users in the country, 36 per cent, or around 26 million, are from towns with less than five lakh population.

On the other hand, the top eight metros — Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad — account for 34 per cent, or 24 million, of the total Net users.

Hey

great finding...Tfs..

About shoba city, The work is going on in the main entrance so no vehicle is allowed inside i guess. So was not able to get any pics.

Meanwhile, Modern dress world has changed its name to Modern silks.
is that going to make any difference. needs to be watched.
My opinion, they should have stuck with their business of hardwares and sanitary wares which is still the best in thrissur..
the whole space in that building could have been used for some corporate offices or banks.

Another great news is that, after Dhanalaxmi bank, South Indian bank is under major renovation process. i had a chance to pass by their main branch near shaktan stand. The work is going on and Its looking huge and modern.

Thrissur banks will stand out to be the best banks in India.

Thrissur is developing and we can feel the changes....
Proud to be a Thrissurite.

Thrissur: The Lalur Malineekarana Viruddha Samara Samithi called off its 115-day-old relay satyagraha on Wednesday. The decision came in the wake of Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan's intervention in the Lalur garbage issue.

A meeting called by the Chief Minister on Tuesday accepted the proposal by Kerala Agricultural University scientist Pathiyur Gopinath to find a solution to the waste management problem.

Addressing a function at Lalur on Wednesday, playback singer K.J. Yesudas urged the authorities to fulfil their promises to the Lalur residents, who had been forced to bear the stench of garbage for more than six decades.

He sang at the function a poem written by poet K.G. Sankara Pillai about the sufferings of the people of Lalur. He gave a glass of lime juice to K.G. Anil Kumar who had been fasting for two days.

Women and children of Lalur took out a candlelight march. Many socio-political leaders also spoke at the function.

Lalur had been forced to bear the brunt of city's garbage for the last six decades, since the rule of the Cochin Kings. The agitation of the ill-fated villagers gathered momentum during 1988, under the leadership of A.V. Aryan and T.K. Vasu, the present chairman of the samara samithi. In between, three youths died of suffocation while cleaning a contaminated well near the Lalur trenching ground.

Since 1996, 54 wells in the area had been sealed by the Pollution Control Board (PCB). Skin diseases, allergy and wheezing are common among people of all age groups in the area. The current agitation started on July 17, 2009, when the seepage flow from the garbage mounds at the trenching ground flooded the nearby houses and polluted most of the wells in the neighbourhood. PCB asked residents not to use water from sources within 250 metres of the trenching ground.

What's your opinion? Will it be feasible?

It's good that divider is coming to other roads like that of Palace road.. Because this provides pattern and a border line of the two way traffic..

But it is a foolishness to introduce it in Swaraj round which has a One way heavy traffic...

What they should do here is complete all the other two subways.. and restrict the people such a way that they cross the road only by using the subway..

There might be a opposing in the begin as all Indian like to break the rules..
But will work great in the long time...

Census operations begin in Thrissur

Thrissur: Census 2011 operations began in the district on Monday.

Officials began door-to-door headcount for the National Population Register. Enumerators started collecting details of assets and properties.

In Thalappilly taluk, Speaker K. Radhakrishnan was the first to be enumerated. Officials, led by tahsildar P. V. Mons, called on the Speaker and collected details.

Mayor R. Bindu was the first to be enumerated within the corporation limits. A team of officials, led by city census officer M. R. Abhilash, visited her residence and sought information.

Ayurveda physician Raghavan Thirumulppadu; actor Innocent; journalist N. Madhavankutty; freedom fighter K. A. Thomas; Revenue Minister K. P. Rajendran's mother Karthyayani Prabhakaran and veteran dancer Guru Gopalakrishnan were the first to be enumerated in Chalakudy, Irinjalakuda, Kodungalloor, Vadama (Mala), Anthicaud and Methala respectively.

Collector A. T. James led census operations in the adivasi belt of Athirappilly.

“The census will provide economic indicators and highlight aspects such as literacy, housing, caste and religion. Preparing it is important for the country's development. People should provide accurate information to the enumerators,” he said.

The district has been divided into 16 zones for census operations. In all, 140 master trainees, 1,000 supervisors and 6,000 enumerators are involved in the work.

In a process called “houselisting”, enumerators will seek details of assets, properties, household goods and literacy. They will collect details of materials used for constructing houses, availability of electricity and water, and related information to create a comprehensive database.

The first phase of the census will conclude on May 27. The second phase will be conducted in February and March 2011.

Will the population of Thrissur City exceed 5 Lakhs at least in 2011? Then only our city will get more benefits from state as well as central goverments.

I'm not sure.... Because we have more settlements just outside the city limits as well.. which will not be considered..

Hi members,

First of all Pooram Aashamsakal to all.

Pooram has arrived and the city is all ready.
the footpath renovation works are almost over. To be frank this was the first time i had seen some work going on even late nights. the corporation has done a wonderful job to finish the major part of the works before pooram so as to avoid inconvenience for the people during pooram days.

Rest of the work will progress after Pooram. The footpaths look great now.
handrails and tile work is still left in certain parts but they have trid their best to finish it on time.

All the inner roads have been completely trarred and its hassel free driving in the corporation area.. Simply superb is the word.

Work of Shaktan square has already begun. But controversies still around it.
Opposition party wants vegetable market in the place where sakthan square and convention center is decided. With sakthan square coming up, all party conventions , meetings wil happen there and it will free thekkinkaadu maidan which is a great thing. Which will also reduce traffic blocks in the city during Jilla sammelanam's. Another good move.

:)

Some other news...

KR restaurant and KR Bakes at Patturaikkal is all ready for inauguration.
It was completely lit up yesterday when i went by Patturaikkal.

Malabar Gold work is in full swing. Can expect it to open in another month or so.
EMKE silks also onto its last stages.

I-square mall is in the same state, No major change.
A huge building coming up near shoba wedding galaxy, kuruppam road.

Its in the initial stages. By the look of it, should be a multi storeyed building.
Atleast 8-9 floors. So expecting it to be very big. Since its a commercial area, its not going to be an apartment. Either a hotel or a shopping complex for sure. may also be a shopping mall. will have to wait and watch. :)

Thrissur developing in terms of looks for sure :)

No... I will never tell this as a handsome work by this corporation...

They are trying to do something to get the votes... They know these works like Sakthan square and convention center will never be complete.. just trying to add one or two things which they can tell during the next election which is almost here...

Main thing is This corporation has not made any road map for next ten years of this cities development. They have not done or planned anything new.

And after 5 years now they need votes :bash: :bash: :bash:

I hope people in Thrissur should ask Both ruling and opposition party each and everything....

I had been to our city for Pooram Celebrations.
* Footpath moderations are looking good. but, obviously not professional
* Malabar Gold showroom is nearing completion
* There is huge building coming up at Kalvari Road - Nethaji Road Junction in West Fort (Probably a mall, primary works are started)
* Sign boards are placed, but most of them are not visible. Boards placed at Kokkalai and in front of KSTRC bus station are good since they direct to Swaraj Round, not Thrissur. But, the sign board placed at the center of West Fort Junction points to Thrissur. What a fate !!!!!
* How can they allow two way traffic in High Road? It's too narrow to allow one way traffic !!!!!!
Thrissur has a lot of distance to travel to become a good looking city !!! But, the politicians have least interest. fate !!!

Great updates justin... Thanks..

Yes.. there should be a group of City loving people in the corporation and other government authorities to make our city a beautiful place to live in..

I will suggest fast growing trees to be planted in all four line roads like TUDA and Model road.. as soon as possible
