Also, I cannot find a decent picture of the junction of Posseidonos and Ethnarchou Makariou coastal Avenues with the Kifissos Avenue in Neo Phaleron. It was completed in July 2004, and most of the pics for the Olympic works were taken by then. Even in Google, you see it before completion. Pity :(

In any case, you can explore the collection of the roadworks in Athens 2004 site by clicking HERE (http://www.athens2004.gr/en/RoadWorksImageGallery/multigallery?image=0a69fb56c7569f00VgnVCMServer28130b0aRCRD). Note that they also have .zip versions of the above pics with spectacular very high resolution. Explore :)

athens had some nice freeways when i was there...(btw, i went there to see family not cuase i wanted to go lol)

freeways are nice, i noticed that they always kept their streets in good shape...there's just way too many clusters in the city though, small buildings etc...need to expand the insides of the cities a lil more (the roads)...people that are clusterphobic will die in the insides of athens lol :jk:

For all that it matters...Most Greeks hold prejudice free views of foreigners! What they discriminate against is that there are groups of immigrants who appear to be more involved in certain unlawful acts than others. Now, in some cases, this is often blamed on Albanians for the simple reason that the Albanians are the largest group here. What a lot of people do not consider is the social-economic factor of the so called quality of life in emergence with the rising economy, prosperity etc. with the inflow of foreigners. This always means a rise in crime. In other words, the so called better a life [Western Style] the more crime we will see. That is why most Western countries have relatively high crime rates [not necessarily violent crime]. But, most people do not know this...and of course I can't blame them. What we should do though is try to let people know things are not always the way they look. And unfortunately, even so called "read" people do not always express their views properly. All I know is that if all people were to go to another nation as an immigrant and see how nice life is elsewhere, I think they'd become better people. I have lived abroad and have seen the beauty of living elsewhere and to be honest things are not as bad as we think they are here. As a foreigner though, I behaved in a respectable manner, and in that way, NO ONE would be able to accuse me of anything....and if they did, I would stand tall and know they are wrongly accusing me and would reconsider. This is a "transition" period we are experiencing...in 20 years there will be another group....and the Albanians forgotten. It always happens. It is just something new to this society. Though we must understand a few things from the Greek side too. In a country with one of the lowest crime rates in the WORLD the country is experiencing a "crime wave". While this doesn't even compare with other countries...for Greeks who used to report bag snatchers on the front pages of their newspapers, this is news and big time! Greeks were always living under conditions with the social phenomenon of "filotimo" and used to sleep outdoors anywhere and at home with all doors and windows open..with no worry whatsoever! Now, not to be able to do that anymore, you must understand their side as well. Don't think it is easy for me either. I lived abroad and know the beauty of being a foreigner. And of course I dreamed of coming back. Well I did, at the same time with all the changes that were happening in this country...and of course because I lived abroad I was discriminated against as well and I am Greek. It is just ignorance on behalf of the person that isn't aware of things as they might really be. Good behavior and honest work always works out in the end. A person that is an honest citizen always wins in the end!

I like the freeways(obviously, they're new..), but I would prefer to see less of the "desertification"" around them....

please don't tell me its the natural environment, its not sub-saharan africa....surely one can plant something pleasant.

Billy you shouldn't take Google Earth Athens pictures as a reference as they're old pre olympic aerial images mainly 2002-2004 (since they're from different periods); and all you are going to see is how Athens looked like in those days of heavy public works underway all around the place, squares, roads and surroundings, plots, etc everything looks so....under construction....if you see the same places now you'll realize the colors and hues are different, I just hope the guys of Google change those Athens images with newer ones, 05' versions at least; and thus show out the vegetation and magnificent colors of Attiki, mainly the northern, northwestern and northeastern alpine ones.

I'm not taking the google earthe pictures as reference, I'm talking about the close-ups, plus I've actually been to most of these places.

Yes, google earth pictures are old but I am sure many of you agree desertification is not the only option when it comes to working around a highway.......

It might be warm in the summer be we don't get droughts for christ's sake....plant something! :) (preferably with some sort of colours.....and pattern).

They are doing some great landscaping along the newer highways! Attiki Odos has started a new trend. Maybe they'll all get into the act!!
I really wish they'd do some LA landscaping...with the palms and all....it makes the city look so much prettier! -- not that we don't have palms..but the more the better. I mean for God's sake, they even started to plant palms in places like Vancouver,BC [Canada], Bellvue, WA, Oklahoma City,OK, Little Rock, AR [USA] to name a few. The other thing I'd like to do is see the removal of billboards. If the city is worried about losing revenue all they have to do is put some traffic cops on the streets and highways and stop drivers for whatever....hell, 97.8% are shitty & dangerous drivers; they'll make a mint!!! But hey, they have to get motivated too. And of course have some sort of incentive program as cops can be bribed....this way the city/state makes more money, we slowly will improve driving conditions on better looking streets & highways....with no visual pollution.

The garbage around the stadiums isn't really on topic, so I will simply post this link to an AthensNews English article. The main gist:

Says Hellenic Olympic Properties president Christos Hadjiemmanuil, "We have submitted [in May] three proposals to the municipality for the financing of the plan for a park plus surface sports facilities," he says. "The municipality deferred its decision until after the local elections, so we are waiting for its final answer. Any problem in the area exists because of this time lag. Once the municipality makes a decision we will proceed immediately."

http://www.athensnews.gr/athweb/nathens.prnt_article?e=C&f=13210&t=01&m=A08&aa=1

According to the article, it looks like it will be resolved in the coming months...

Athens has some of the most spectacular urban freeways in Europe. In a few days public works minister Souflias will announce the new freeway projects for Athens. Unfortunately all of them will be toll roads. Personally I am waiting with impatience for the completion of Hymmetus Ring. This incredible freeway which runs along mountain Hymmetus slope will finally reach the coast at Hellenikon. Of course there will be many reactions from nimbys, as this road will run for about 1 km under inhabited areas. Environmentalists will also rise up, because many trees will have to be cut in Hymmetus, unless many tunnels are built. But it’s a bit early to speculate, let’s wait for the definitive lay-out!
