rajeshdxb January 2nd, 2006, 01:50 PM About the Idukki Dam:
In the heart of the Idukki district in Kerala lies the 'Idukki Dam' - Asia's biggest Arch Dam of 555 feet height proudly standing between the two mountains - 'Kuravanmala' (839 meters) and 'Kurathimala' (925 meters ). This prestigeous project is situated in Idukki District and its underground Power House is located at Moolamattom which is about 43 kms away from Idukki.
When the Idukki Dam was commissioned in 1976, a new Landmark was created in Indian construction. In many ways the project was unique and is regarded as a hallmark of construction quality. This is Indias first & only Arch Dam. This is also the second highest concrete dam in India. It has a thickness of 19.81 m, at the deepest foundation & 7.62 m at top. The dam was built for Kerala State Electricity Board.
The shape and the quality of rock at the deep gorge where this dam was built was immensely suitable to adopt the arch shape of the dam. The double curvature arch shape has resulted in an saving in concrete volume by 60 % as compared to a gravity dam of this height. The arch has a unique geometrical shape evolved by Canadian Consultants Surveyor Nenniger & Chenevert.
rajeshdxb January 2nd, 2006, 02:05 PM About Cheruthoni Dam:
The Cheruthoni Dam was built in the twin valley of Periyar river gorge. The Idukki Arch dam was built in the adjacent valley. The two dams store water for the Idukki Hydel Power Project, Kerala. The Cheruthoni Dam ranks amongst the largest dams built in India.
It is a concrete gravity dam and was built for Kerala State Electricity Board in the year 1977.
Length at crest level : 651 metres
Height from deepest foundation level : 133 metres
Concrete Volume : 1.7 million cubic metres

rajeshdxb January 2nd, 2006, 02:21 PM An overview of the Idukki Hydro Electric Project
It consists of three major dams. The Idukki Arch Dam has been constructed across Periyar River in a narrow gorge between two granite hills. It is 550 ft. high and at the base its thickness is 65 ft. This is a double curvature Arch Dam and in regard to height it comes second in the country. No far off from the Idukki Arch Dam, across river Cheruthony is built a concrete gravity Dam. It is known as Cheruthony Dam and its height is 454 ft. The spill way of the Idukki Reservoir is the Cheruthony 'dam. To prevent the water escape through a rivulet, called 'Kalivally' 30 kms west to Idukki Arch Dam, a free masonry dam, is constructed across Killivallly at Kulamavu. It is 328 ft. high.
The water impounded by these three dams has formed a single reservoir spread over 36 miles on a height of 2300 ft. m.s.l. Along a power tunnel from the Kulamavu basin water flowers to the pressure shafts in the underground power house beneath Nadukani hills at Moolamattom. In the power house there are huge generators of a total capacity of 780 M.W. After the generation of electricity water flows through a 4000 ft. long tunnel to a tributary of Thodupuzha river. The Idukki Project was completed with the economic and technological assistance of Canada in accordance with the Colombo Plan of Commonwealth Countries.
The regulated waters of Periyar falls through a drop of about 669.2 metres (2195 feet) to the underground power house at Moolamattom.

Suncity January 3rd, 2006, 06:00 PM Hirakud Dam (http://sambalpur.nic.in/hirakud%20dam.htm)
Hirakud Dam Project is built across river Mahanadi at about 15 Kms. upstream of Sambalpur town in State of Orissa. This happens to be the first post independence major multipurpose river valley project in India. The dam is 6 Kms from NH 6 . The nearest rail head is Hirakud railway station (S.E.R) which is 8 Kms from the dam site. Hirakud dam is a composite structure of Earth, Concrete and Masonry. The main dam having an overall length of 4.8 km. spans between hills Lamdungri on left hand Chandili Dunguri on the right. The Dam is flanked by 21 K.Ms. long earthen dykes both on left and right sites to close the low suddles beyond the abutment hills. It has the distinction of being the longest dam in the world, being 25.8 K.Ms. long with dam and dykes taken together. It has also the rare distinct of forming the biggest artificial lake in Asia with reservoir spread of 743 sq Kms at full reservoir level. Hirakud dam intercepts 83400 sq. km (32200 sq miles) of Mahanadi catchments.

sudheeshnairs January 4th, 2006, 06:52 AM Rajesh, you made a little mistake, this is not Thenmala dam, but Neyyar Dam, 30 kms from Trivandrum City. Infact you had posted the same image under title "Neyyar Dam" in Trivandrum thread III... :)
It is situated at 30km east of Thiruvananthapuram, at the foot of western ghats. It was established in 1958. It is occupying the basin of the rivers Neyyar, Mullayar and Kallar. This popular picnic spot has a watch tower, crocodile farm, lion safari park and deer park. The 128sqkm Neyyar sanctuary occupies a beautiful wooded and hilly landscape, dominated by the peak of Agasthya malai. Wild life includes gaur, sloth bear, Nilgiri Tahr, jungle cat and Nilgiri langur but most commonly seen animals are wild elephants and sambar deer. Boating facilities are available at the reservoir
The Thenmala Dam in Trivandrum/Kollam
The dam Thenmala is built across Kallada, just below the confluence of its three small tributaries, the Kulathupuzha, the Chendurni and the Kalthurthy, forming the Parappar reservoir at an elevation of 1 225 m above MSL. The outflowing river Kallada joins the Ashtamudi lagoon and estuary.

Anniyan January 22nd, 2006, 10:45 PM The Mettur Dam is a large dam in India. It was completed in 1934. The total length of the dam is 1700 meters. It is also called Stanley Reservoir. The Mettur Hydro Electrical power project is also quite large. The dam, the park, the major Hydro Electric power stations and hills on all sides make Mettur a tourist attraction.
The government of India's water resources ministry site on the NIC.in server (http://wrmin.nic.in/projects/mettur.htm) says the Mettur dam is an old multipurpose project of the south Indian state (province) of Tamil Nadu across the Cauvery river. It was completed in 1934. It irrigates 1,310 square kilometres each year. Its installed capacity for hydro-power generation is 32 MW.
A view of the reservoir
http://tinypic.com/mctet3.jpg
The maximum level of the dam is 120 feet and the maximum capacity is 93.4 tmc ft. The Mettur Dam has received attention of the public during the recent past because of the Cauvery water dispute between the States of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Consequent to building dams, including the Kabini Dam, across the Kaveri River in Karnataka, the Mettur Dam does not receive adequate water during lean seasons. Thus, the Dam nearly goes dry during certain parts of the year, when water is most needed by the agriculturists and general public of Tamil Nadu. This has created serious dispute and tension between the neighbouring States of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Tamil Nadu has alleged that, in spite of the Supreme Court verdict, the Government of Karnataka refuses to release sufficient water for the Mettur Dam, or the lower riparian areas. Meanwhile, the Indian Central Government has created the Kaveri Water Tribunal to solve the problem; but little progress has been made.

kronik March 13th, 2006, 02:56 PM not a picture post but interesting nevertheless....
After 19 yrs, work on in full flow at site (http://www.indianexpress.com/story/344.html)
The excitement among 200 engineers and over 2,000 workers at Narmada dam site at Kevadia is palpable, following Wednesday’s permission from the Narmada Control Authority (NCA) to raise the height of the dam from the existing 110.54 metres to 121.92 metres. After 19 years, the project is finally a step from completion.
Within hours of the NCA order, engineers, workers and machineries were mobilised and work began immediately. The task is expected to be over within six months.
According to engineers associated with the project for almost two decades, the NCA’s permission is the penultimate step before the completion of the dam. Superintending Engineer P M Patel said: ‘‘We will require just one more permission for the construction of piers, about 1.65 metres in height, to install the gates. After that, concrete work will come to an end and Gujarat will have India’s third-highest concrete dam after Bhakhra and Lakhwar.’’
Though the dam’s foundation was laid in 1961 by Jawaharlal Nehru, its construction began on April 24, 1987. Expected to have been completed in June 1996 at an estimated cost of Rs 320 crore, a number of hurdles delayed the project and increased costs several-fold.
Till February 2006, Rs 1,290 crore had been spent.
Gulati said once the dam’s height was raised, it could store another 1.5 million acre feet of water and all the 11 hydro power production units installed will run at full capacity.
‘‘At present, only three units—two with 200 MW capacity and another with 50 MW capacity—are operational, but working at 80 per cent of their capacity,’’ said Gulati. After raising the height, 1,450 MW of power could be generated for distribution among MP (57 pc), Maharashtra (27 pc) and Gujarat (16) pc.

Patel Engineering Ltd (PEL) has commenced work on Teesta Hydroelectric Project (THP) in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal.
The project was located on the river Teesta in Darjeeling district about 50 kms from the town of Siliguri.
The project envisaged construction of a 33 metre high, 140m long reinforced concrete barrage across river Teesta and 132MW hydroelectric power station along with ancillary structures like intake, penstocks, divide walls, tail channel and switchyard.
The Teesta low dam hydroelectric project third stage was located on the river Teesta where it flowed in the north-south direction through the Himalayas, passing through the state of Sikkim before entering West Bengal.
The 33m high and 140m long RCC barrage across the Teesta and its attached 132MW hydroelectric power station would permit fish to swim along the river through a structure called a "fish ladder" built into the barrage.
The site on the Teesta river permitted work only between October and May.
For construction of the barrage, it was necessary to dry out the bed by diverting the river flow from the work areas.
On most other projects, the river water was normally diverted by making a diversion tunnel, but the Himalayan topography such that such a tunnel was not possible at the site.
The river water had to be diverted within its bed itself, in phases, from one bank of the river to the other bank, and then back to the original bank.
In addition, the River Teesta was prone to frequent flash floods even during the non-monsoon months and this was another challenge to the construction engineers who had to be prepared for such exigencies.

The Sardar Of Indian Dams
While the debate over the Sardar Sarovar Project continues, many within the state and outside are still unaware of the dam's benefits
By Uday Mahurkar
The controversy over the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP) is never-ending. The debate over the gigantic project has been going on for almost two decades now. Last week, the project crossed yet another milestone when the height of the dam reached 122 m (of the total 138 m), clearance for which was given by the Narmada Control Authority early last year amid opposition from the Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA). With just 16 m left to be built, the SSP now enters its final stage of completion. The sense of relief as well as urgency was unmistakable on the face of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and his team which was present at the site to participate in a ceremony to mark the occasion. Ironically, however, despite the dam being in the limelight for so many years, few outside Gujarat, or even inside, know what SSP is. In fact, many can't even differentiate between the SSP and the Narmada Project as a whole.
SSP is the dam which the state Government is constructing at Kevadiya Colony while the Narmada Project is a scheme comprising a series of dams as envisaged by Dr A.N. Khosla, former Central Water Commission chairman, in 1964-65. The scheme was devised to tap 28 million acre ft of water flowing in the Narmada by constructing 30 major dams, 135 medium dams and 3,000 check-dams on the river and its 42 tributaries spread over Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra, for irrigation, drinking water and electricity. Six of the major dams and 20 of the medium ones are either ready or are on the verge of completion. Only one of them, the SSP, is in Gujarat. When it comes to tapping the basin of a river, the Narmada Project is one of the biggest in the world.
Together the dams will generate 4,000 mw of power. Says Gujarat Chief Secretary Sudhir Mankad: "It is one of those very few projects in the world wherein the water of the same river is being used over and over again to generate power." The water is first used upstream in Narmada Sagar Dam in Madhya Pradesh to generate 1,000 mw electricity after which it is used again at the SSP by a 1,450 mw project.
The underground power project at the SSP has been set up in a 57-metre-long tunnel which is equal to the height of a 17-storey building. It has six turbines of 200 mw capacity each, five of which started functioning last monsoon. Plus, there is a powerhouse on canal head with a 250 mw capacity.
Says P.K. Laheri, chairman, Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam: "The dam has many novel features of which people are unaware. At full capacity, the SSP's power project will earn daily revenue of Rs 7 crore at Rs 2 per unit."
Few would question Laheri once they comprehend the dam's unique features. It has been designed to check wastage of conserved water. Water is first made to gush down on the turbines and then released into four balancing ponds from where it flows into the canal. The ponds help regulate the flow of water into the canal as per needs. In most other dams water directly flows into the canal. The main SSP canal is the longest in the world-532 km (74 km in Rajasthan) out of which almost 400 km is ready. And the canal is like one large river-345 ft wide at the top and 25 ft deep, till the initial 263 km. It has 610 engineering structures on it including bridges, siphons and aqua-ducts.
Then it has the third largest spillway discharge capacity in the world at 30 lakh cusec after the Itaipu Dam in Brazil and the Zizang Dam in China. Says P.M. Patel, a superintendent engineer who has been with the project since its inception, "SSP will submerge only 37,000 hectare of land but will irrigate over 18 lakh hectare and provide drinking water to over 8,000 villages and 135 towns." This season alone, the dam will irrigate four lakh hectare and provide potable water to 4,000 villages.
The water distribution network of the SSP is unique in many ways. As many as four pumping stations have been raised in Saurashtra to supply water into the canal from low-gravity areas. Also, the irrigation water will be sold to village cooperatives to bring in a sense of collective responsibility. Over 1,400 village cooperatives are ready and another 400 will be formed. These cooperatives will cover 3,393 villages in 14 of the 26 districts of Gujarat. Over 1,000 villages are already getting water through the cooperative system. Such a system is being tried for the first time in India on such a vast scale.
The total water flow in the Narmada river is equivalent to the flow of water in the Ravi, Sutlej and Beas put together. But a large part of it goes waste into the sea while areas like north Gujarat and Saurashtra and Barmer in Rajasthan witness depleting water tables, contaminated drinking water problem and arid conditions. This year, Barmer will experience the power of the Narmada when the SSP takes the water to one of the most parched districts in the country symbolised by the Thar desert. That will be yet another achievement of the SSP.
kronik January 30th, 2007, 08:08 PM Narmada dam is tourism hot spot (http://www.business-standard.com/economy/storypage.php?tab=r&autono=273105&subLeft=1&leftnm=3)
The controversial Narmada dam site has emerged as a major tourist destination over the last few years, with more than 11 lakh people visiting the site during the last 18 months.
In view of this, Sardar Sarovar Nigam Ltd (SSNL) is going ahead with its plans to develop the area as an eco-tourism site.
SSNL’s tourism department will shortly launch ad campaigns to promote the eco-tourism project.
Talking to Business Standard, R V Gajjar, executive engineer, tourism, Sardar Sarovar Nigam Ltd, said, “From June 2005 to December 31, 2006, as many as 11 lakh people visited the site. Though most of them were local tourists, more than 10 per cent of the visitors were from other states. The number of tourists from other states will increase once the proposed eco-tourism project over 84 hectares in Kevadia is completed.”
As part of the project, BSEL Infrastructure and Realty Ltd of Mumbai are developing Narmada Nihar, a budget hotel with 150 rooms. There are more than 15 sub-projects lined up at the site, he added.
On an average, around 3,000 people on weekdays and around 15,000 on weekends visit the place.
“The eco-tourism project is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 160 crore. The project includes facilities for water and adventure sports. We have already invited tenders from interested private players to develop the site,” Gajjar said.
Gajjar added that the project officials had recruited three experienced trekking instructors.
“Till now, about 6,000 people have enjoyed trekking here. Moreover, we have developed an orientation centre which exhibits the history of the dam as well as the Narmada region. It will be inaugurated soon.”
The project is part of a larger plan to develop 16 villages surrounding the dam site. The government has identified these villages, which are to be developed by the Narmada Valley Development Authority.

superdesi2100 March 21st, 2007, 11:38 PM Parched Saurashtra now has ‘world’s largest’ pump (http://www.indianexpress.com/story/26316.html)
Irrigation in Gujarat got a dynamic lift as the ‘world’s largest water pumping station by volume’ started pushing 230 cubic meters of water per seconds (cumecs) into the parched Saurashtra region of the state yesterday.
This will increase to 410 cumecs after expansion of phases III and IV, with the total five-station system pumping 5,40,000 lakh litres of water per day into Saurashtra when completed, thereby, irrigating 5.4 lakh hectares of area in Saurashtra that constitutes about one-third of the total command area of the Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP). In addition, 4,620 villages and towns in the region would get drinking water supply.
Switching on one of the gigantic motors into action at Kadu chainage of the Saurashtra Branch Canal (SBC), some 100 km from Ahmedabad in Surendranagar district, Chief Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the phase I and II of the Saurashtra system of the Narmada project.
The feat of lifting 230 cubic meters of water per second to a height of 71 m against the steep gradient of the Saurashtra peninsula in five stages will be achieved using 16 high tension concrete and vertical motors, and a siphon system that has been patented in the US by manufacturers Kirloskar Brothers Ltd. An elated Modi congratulated the Kirloskar team led by its chairman Sanjay Kirloskar, before he left for a public rally.
Engineering marvel
Talking of the challenges and how they met it, Kirloskar director R K Shrivastava said that the system achieved engineering milestones in pumping largest volume of water up 71 m in five stages using innovation in design that had also brought them a US patent for the siphon duct. “The concrete pumps are high efficiency long life motors that have been constructed at the site. They use less power, translating into an annual saving of Rs 12.23 crore per annum,” Shrivastava said. At Rs 400 crore, the project has been accomplished at one-fourth the cost suggested by a foreign engineering firm in early 1990s.

superdesi2100 July 3rd, 2007, 03:13 PM SSP overflows, generates 1,200 MW power
With heavy rains in the catchment areas of the Sardar Sarovar Project Dam, the water level here crossed the 122-metre mark on Monday. With all the units of this riverbed powerhouse becoming functional due to the increased water levels, 1,200 MW of power generation was recorded on Monday.
Ashok Gajjar, the Sardar Sarovar Nigam Limited(SSNL) engineer said that with heavy rains in the last 36 hours, water levels in the dam’s catchment area had increased from 113 metres to 122.5 metres. “Power generation is possible now due to the optimum capacity, which otherwise gets affected when the water levels in the dams take a dip,” said Gajjar
With dam waters being released, the villages in Narmada as well as in Bharuch district have been put on an alert, said the authorities.

IndiansUnite April 22nd, 2008, 07:50 AM Centre to pump in Rs 7,777 cr into Gosikhurd dam in MH
Much-Delayed Project May Be Over By 2012
Nagpur: Vidarbha’s dream irrigation project, Gosikhurd, which encountered many roadblocks in the past few years due to lack of funds is likely to be completed by 2012. The central government has approved nearly Rs 7,777 crores for the project.
The Centre had recently declared Gosikhurd as a national asset and decided to provide nearly 90 % of the funds for the project. The technical advisory committee (TAC) of the Central Water Commission recently approved the revised budget of Rs 7,777 crore for the project.
http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/5941/pc0031500hz0.jpg
Construction on at the project site
Superintending engineer, Gosikhurd project, Sanjay Kholapurkar said, “TAC approval was necessary for the completion of project, as the last proposal for the project was submitted in 1988.” The revised proposal was prepared taking into account the current costs.
The project envisages construction of a 11.35 km long earthen dam with gated spillway across Wainganga river near Gosikhurd village. Although work started in 1981, it gained momentum only after it got forest clearance and was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi on April 22, 1988.
The Vidarbha Irrigation Development Corporation has spent about Rs 2,464 crores till December 7, 2008 on the project that would develop irrigation potential for 2.50 lakh hectares of land in Nagpur, Bhandara and Chandrapur districts.
The state government had recently given an administrative approval to fund the escalated cost of Rs 5,659.10 crore for the project, Kholapurkar said. However now with Centre providing its 90 per cent share of Rs 7,777, the state government will share the rest 10 per cent amount. The original estimated cost of the Gosikhurd project was Rs 372 crore in 1982. When late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi inaugurated it in 1988, the cost had already gone up to Rs 461 crores and in 1995 it rose to Rs 2,091 crores.
The project in numbers
Gosikhurd will create irrigation potential in three districts of Nagpur (19,481 hectares), Bhandara (89,856 hectares) and Chandrapur (1,41,463 hectares) spread over an area of 2.50 lakh hectares. Stryker April 30th, 2008, 01:42 AM Yes..i am an engineer and working for Hindusthan Construction Co.I shall post some of the latest projects that we are doing.
to name a few..
........cheers:)
I had seen some of the work done by HCC. The govt's irrigation dept had approached our institution for funding the KOYNA project ( enhancement ). We were taken to the site in the western ghats of Maharashtra to see the live project. I cannot describe how awesome it was.
It was a high security area. We were taken approx 3 to 4 km inside a rock mountain thru a tunnel ( imagine that !!! ). A huge hydel power plant was being built ( by HCC ) below a mountain. Since we were the financiers we were allowed to go there.
There are some amazing things which our govt does do...but we never come to know about that. And it does not even get publicity.
AcesHigh April 30th, 2008, 07:11 AM I know this is about India´s dams... but if the interest is in dams, some pictures of Itaipu, between Brazil and Paraguay. (i found the thread when I made a search for Itaipu here on SSC)

IndiansUnite June 5th, 2008, 02:36 AM Narmada dam project to be completed by 2010 (http://www.thaindian.com/newsportal/enviornment/narmada-project-to-be-completed-by-2010_10056526.html)
Ahmedabad, June 4 (IANS) The much-delayed multi-billion-rupee Narmada dam project, often termed Gujarat’s lifeline, is now expected to be completed by 2009-2010, its executing agency said Wednesday. In a quarterly status of the project filed on the Bombay Stock Exchange in terms of the listing agreement, the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited, a Gujarat government undertaking, said the height of the dam had reached 121.92 metres following clearance from the Narmada Canal Authority.
The Nigam is obliged to convey the quarterly financial results following the listing of its deep discount bonds issued in 1993. But since the project is under execution, the Nigam has to provide the quarterly status of the project.
The status report filed by the Nigam said the work on the Narmada main canal is almost completed up to 357 km out of a total length of 458 km. Work on the remaining part is in progress.
All five units of the canal head power house and all six units of riverbed power houses have been commissioned, the report added.
It added the height of the dam will be raised from time to time after necessary clearances. Canals and other works will be completed in phases and “it is expected that the entire project will be completed by 2009-10″.

EMP March 4th, 2009, 05:51 PM India, Nepal set to construct dam
NEW DELHI: Thirteen years after signing a treaty, India and Nepal are all set to establish Pancheshwar Development Authority for construction of
the ambitious 6000 MW Pancheswar multi-purpose project on the Indo-Nepal border.
The project seeks to build a storage dam on the Mahakali river at the boundary of Uttarakhand and Nepal
. Nearly 80 per cent of the catchment area for the project would be in India and the rest in Nepal.
"The Pancheshwar Development Authority will be set up jointly with the Government of Nepal for construction, operation and maintenance of the Pancheshwar project within a year," Water Resources Minister Saifuddin Soz said.
According to Soz, the authority will help decide the "operational details" for construction of the project.
The treaty on development of the Mahakali river, called Sarda in India, was signed between the two countries in February 1996, but came into force in June 1997.
The Pancheshwar project would also facilitate regulated release of water contributing to development of irrigation potential and control flood downstream.
There is also a proposal to construct a regulatory dam. While India wants to construct the regulatory dam at Purnagiri in Uttarakhand, Nepal is interested in building it at Rupaligarh so that relief and rehabilitation problems in that country is minimised.

ajithv September 17th, 2009, 07:56 AM KOCHI: One more hurdle in the construction of a new dam at Mullaperiyar has been removed with the Union Forest and Environment Ministry giving the green signal for the survey of the new dam.Water Resources Minister N K Premanchandran told Express that the preliminary work had started and that the survey was expected to be completed in two months. The detailed project report will then be prepared. Premachandran thanked the Union Government for giving the clearance.
The survey has to be conducted in the thick forest of the Periyar Tiger Reserve, for which adequate security is needed.
Ten kilometres of the proposed area of the project is to be surveyed.
The survey of seven kilometres has been completed and that for the remaining three kilometres will be conducted through the forest.
The Minister said that the construction of a new dam had been a longstanding demand of Kerala as the existing dam is weak and poses a hazard to thousands of people in Central Kerala. The clearance from the Natural Wild- Life Board is a positive step.
He pointed out that the dispute between Kerala and Tamil Nadu over construction of the new dam will be over only after the Supreme Court gives a final verdict in this regard, which is expected by October 20.

hakz2007 July 27th, 2010, 03:48 AM STEPS BEING TAKEN TO CONSTRUCT NEW DAM AT MULLAPERIYAR
THIRVANANTHAPURAM (KERALA, INDIA), July 26 (NNN-PTI) -- The Kerala government is taking all administrative and legal steps to construct a new dam at Mullaperiyar in place of the existing 113-year-old reservoir, the Kerala Assembly was informed Monday.
The government is of the view that a new dam was necessary as any kind of strengthening of the existing structure would not ensure its safety, Water Resources Minister N K Premachandran said replying to a calling attention notice.
He said security system of dams in the state had been strengthened in the wake of a directive issued by the Indian Central Government following terrorist threat.
Premachandran said though threat to Mullaperiyar Dam was very high, Tamil Nadu was not co-operating with Kerala in providing additional security to the dam over which the two states have been at loggerheads for long.
Tamil Nadu even wanted to "remove" Kerala policemen from the dam site, he said. http://namnewsnetwork.org/v2/read.php?id=128179

sixsigma1978 April 18th, 2011, 09:43 PM Looks like a fantastic race between India and China!!!
The Pakistani outfits couldn't pull it off, so they roped in the Chinese- this Hydro power Dam "world cup final" should be interesting in 2016 - but it will be India vs Pakistan featuring Indian and Chinese players!!
Pakistan: Neelum-Jhelum hydropower project cost increases on delays
ISLAMABAD: Massive delays and increase in the scope have swelled the cost of Neelum Jhelum Hydropower project by almost 98 percent to $2.25 billion from $1.5 billion, officials said.
This will help Indian authorities to complete the controversial Kishanganga project on the same Neelum River in Indian Held Kashmir, they said.
“Owing to the delays, the Neelum-Jhelum project will now complete by 2018 whereas the completion of Kishanganga project is due in 2016,” said an official. “In case India manages to complete its project earlier, under the existing Indus Water Treaty (IWT), it will clinch the water priority rights of Neelum River.”
India has done more than 50 percent work on its project.
Pakistan has already moved to Court of Arbitration against the faulty design of Kishnaganga hydropower project. Pakistan says that under IWT, India can build its project on the run of the river to ensure the pace of water flows which are destined to reach Pakistan. But New Delhi is constructing a 48-kilometer long tunnel to divert the water of Neelum Tributary for more generation from the proposed project.
This will adversely affect the water flow of Neelum River that originates from Indian Held Kashmir. It will also have catastrophic affects on the environment of Neelum River in Azad Jummu and Kashmir.
“The authorities who have been involved in the project need to be fixed for this huge loss,” said an official.
According to the document available with The News, the Neelum-Jhelum project was first conceived in 1988 when its PC-1 was approved by the Executive Committee of National Economic Council. Then its cost was estimated at $1.5 billion.
Later, its PC-1 was revised with electricity generation capacity of 969 MW.
In 1998, some changes were introduced in its detailed design and accordingly PC-1 was again revised.
In 2003, the contractors developed some dispute with the government owing to which this project once again got delayed.
The 2005 earthquake further delayed the project. A panel of experts revisited the detailed design of the project after the quake and completely changed it besides increasing the project’s scope.
In 2008, a joint venture of Chinese companies mobilised its staff and machinery on the site of the project. With a view to expedite the Neelm-Jhelum project, it was decided that the Chinese companies involved in the project be allowed to purchase tunnel boring machine, which can help Pakistan build the project by 2016.
One of the top officials at WAPDA said that if the TBM purchasing gets delayed, Pakistan will certainly lose the water priority rights as Neelum-Jhelum project will not be completed in 2016.
The official further said that the only recipe to complete the project in 2016 and clinch the water priority rights of Neelum River was to ensure the availability of TBM at the earliest so that the project could be completed before Kishanganga project. With the use of TBM, the country will have an income of Rs90 billion. Pakistan will save Rs70 billion even if Rs20 billion to be spent on TBM are deducted.
“Moreover, WAPDA will be having the strategic asset of TBM that will be used in other projects. In addition, Pakistan’s technical staff will increase its capacity by using TBM.”
To a question, the official said that India has already acquired TBM, but it remains non-functional.

The actual strings of many of India's problems (pak, nepal, bangladesh, sri lanka) in 21st century lies with beijing, which is sitting on 3 trillion dollar reserve, fantastic infrastrucutre and economy and great military. India is simply busy with corruption, lazy attitude and internal fighting.
anidel April 19th, 2011, 07:31 PM Looks like a fantastic race between India and China!!!

We should build it at the earliest or we will loose priority rights over that water.
pakistan will try terrorism or stone pelters to stop the work on our side.
SSCaddict April 19th, 2011, 07:34 PM which is sitting on 3 trillion dollar reserve, fantastic infrastrucutre and economy and great military.
they are also sitting on a very HUGE property bubble which when burst may lead to a crash similar to Japan in 90's
murlee April 19th, 2011, 08:22 PM Don't think china will crash! They looks pretty strong. Plus, China's downfall has been predicted for a long time now by the West and seems like nothing can stop the Dragon!!

The fact that Pakistan isn't doing ANYTHING except delays ("project halted due to contractual disagreements") - which is why they're saying "F**K it!! Get the Chinese!! At this rate - we'll just have a 5 metre wall by the time India finishes it"

sixsigma1978 July 7th, 2011, 08:04 PM For a change - I feel bad for our neighbors - considering their cities are currently staggering under 10 hour loadshedding and their rurals have virtually no electricity with their generations assets slowly falling apart!
Pakistan virtually loses out on Indian dam
ISLAMABAD: Thanks to the incompetence of Pakistani government’s so-called water experts, Pakistan has, for all practical purposes, lost the case against India on the controversial 330MW Kishenganga Hydropower project even before the formal commencement of the legal battle in the court of arbitration as India has already completed 40 percent construction work on the project, reveals the latest monthly report of the project exclusively available with The News.
The report belies the statement of water and power ministry’s official before the Senate Committee on Water on Wednesday, in which he had said that India had only completed 23.5 percent work on the project. The monthly report, however, unveils that 29 percent work on the Spillway left bank, 36 percent on the Head Race Tunnel and 48 percent on the Surge Shaft has been completed. If the report is to be believed, the ministry has seriously misguided the Senate Committee. The News repeatedly tried to contact the ministry spokesman but he did not respond.
The report also unveils that three countries — the UK, Italy and Germany — are supporting India in the construction of the controversial Kishenganga project while Pakistan has failed to garner such support from major countries in its legal battle. The report says that for the execution of the project, M/s Kishenganga Consortium with HCC Ltd, is acting as a lead partner, while M/s Halcow Group Ltd, UK, is a partner and M/s SELI SJZA Italy, M/s BHEL, M/s DSD NOELL Gmbll Germany & M/s PES engineers Pvt. Ltd are subcontractors.
India has already reduced the timeframe to complete the Kishenganga project by 2014 while Pakistan has set a new target to execute the Neelum-Jhelum project by 2016. India is using the advanced Tunnel Boring Machine to complete its project as per the new timeline while Pakistan has even failed to acquire the technology thus far. However, sources claim that Pakistan will be able to get the TBM by January 2012 and make it operational by next June or July to expedite work on the project. “But by that time, India will have completed 80% of its project,” said an insider.
All members of the Court of Arbitration (CoA) constituted to resolve the dispute over the Kishenganga Hydropower project in the light of the Indus Waters Treaty had earlier visited Pakistan and India from June 15 to assess how much work had been completed on the Neelum-Jehlum Hydropower and Kishenganga projects, top official at the Ministry of Water and Power told The News.
“Neelum-Jhelum is a very important project being built by Pakistan on the Neelum River in the AJK,” explained a water ministry source. “The country that completes the project first will have water priority rights of the Neelum River. If the Court of Arbitration assesses that the N-J project lags behind the Kishenganga project, Pakistan will not only lose water priority rights but also the legal battle with India. On the other hand, if the CoA finds that the Indian project is far behind the N-J project in terms of construction work, India will lose the battle and water priority rights.”
Pakistan has already moved the Court of Arbitration in Hague to stop India from constructing the Kishenganga Dam, arguing that India was negating the Indus Waters Treaty 1960 by diverting the water through the 22-km tunnel to generate 330MW of electricity.
Pakistan deposited its memorandum with the CoA at the end of May 2011 and under the procedure, India will get six months to submit its reply. The Kishenganga project is likely to be completed by 2014 whereas the Neelum-Jhelum project is to be completed by 2016. It is feared that by the time the CoA starts hearing the case, India will already have completed 90 percent of the project, top sources confided to The News. It is pertinent to point out that Pakistan’s team on this critical issue had been led by Kamal Majidullah, the former adviser on water and agriculture, and considered a close friend of the president.

truckin July 10th, 2011, 10:39 AM For a change - I feel bad for our neighbors
OT: Every country has a choice about what kind of infrastructure they want to develop, and Pakistan made a choice of setting up Jihad factories, focused on different kind of human resource skill development in these camps, looked for alternative Finance options like foreign aid and opium/drug money, so why would result be any different?
murlee July 10th, 2011, 11:28 AM I read somewhere that they were employin or planning to emply the Chinese to complete that dam they r building to challenge India! If its true, it will be a tough race... Hope we win!!
zoxtannin July 10th, 2011, 03:22 PM I have no compassion for them.. they are reaping the results of the hatred they sowed against others for the last 60 years. There are more bad times and sufferings to come, just sit back, relax, have a chilled beer and enjoy :-) I am happy that India is progressing fast, thats all we should be focusing on.

actually - they'll get their tunnel boring machine only by 2012 end. By then - India would have completed a large chunk of the infrastructure. NHPC is a solid firm - I think the only way this dam may not happen is if the neighnbors play a sore-loser on losing out and start a diplomatic offensive - to blackmail the peace process!!
IndiansUnite August 22nd, 2011, 08:58 AM The 330 MW Kishenganga hydro-electric power project in J&K has a 24 km tunnel component to it. Water from Kishenganga will be diverted to the Wullar lake. Here are some pics of the TBM being used - these were taken in May 2010.

Italian tunnelling specialist SELI has celebrated its 60th Anniversary by manufacturing a 400-ton, 6.18m diameter DSU TBM painted gold, for the Kishanganga tunnel project in India. The gilded machine was delivered to the main contractor HCC (Hindustan Construction Company) today during an official ceremony at the company’s factory in Aprilia. The DSU TBM will bore 700-1000m under the Himalayas, crossing critical geological conditions of localised poor and squeezing rock as well of fault zones. The TBM has been specially designed to cope with the ground conditions and improve them through extensive pre-treatment works.
The TBM, is equipped with 8 no. AC motors of 315 kW each, generating a total cutterhead power of 2520kW, controlled by a VFD system. Main and auxiliary thrust have also been over-specified.
The TBM will have high conicity, to cope with squeezing rock, and the shields are equipped with a special bentonite injection system to lubricate the shield in contact with the rock to reduce shield friction. Overboring and overcutting facilities will create further increases in the clearance around the shields in bad rock conditions under high cover.
The gripper shield is equipped with 26 holes for probe drilling/grouting the rock ahead of the face, while the tail shield is equipped with an additional 8 holes.
Convergence measurements will be performed continuously during excavation through specific holes in the front shield.

Yagya January 29th, 2012, 03:29 AM This dam is built on the Jakham river, which originates from a small village Jakhamia in Chhoti Sadrisub division. The Jakham dam's foundation was laid on 14 May, 1968 by then chief minister Mohan Lal Sukhadia, however the actual construction-work of the dam started in 1969-70.The dam itself was completed in 1986, but took another twelve years for the completion of this irrigation project in March 2000.
Initially the catchment of the Jakham Dam was 5,015 MCft for irrigating 52,354 hectares of land. Out of its total water retention capacity of 5,015 MCft, the usable water capacity is 4,671 MC ft. The cost of this project is 106.03 crore. The length of this Dam is 253 meters, out of which spill way is in 90 m in length. The area around the dam is hilly and rugged. 13 km away from the main dam, Nangaliya pickup ware has been constructed with Left main canal (39.90km) and right main canal(34.12 km). Irrigation facility is being provided in 118 villages in Dhariyawad sub-division.

NEW DELHI, FEB 19:
In a significant development in an Indo-Pak dispute, the International Court of Arbitration at The Hague has upheld India’s right to divert water from the Kishanganga Hydroelectric Project (KHEP) in Kashmir.
Reacting to the development, an official spokesperson in the Ministry of External Affairs said: “The award of the Court of Arbitration at The Hague has reaffirmed validity of India’s position regarding KHEP by allowing diversion of water from the KHEP as envisaged by India.”
Indus Waters Treaty
He said: “It highlights once again that India is adhering to all the provisions of Indus Waters Treaty.” The spokesperson also said the details of the award were being studied.
Pakistan has been objecting to the construction of the hydroelectric project on the Kishanganga river in Kashmir, which is called Neelum upon entering Pakistan.
Kishanganga dam dispute
In November 2009, Pakistan had proposed the establishment of a Court of Arbitration and the appointment of a neutral expert to resolve the Kishanganga dam dispute.
Indus Waters Treaty, inked between India and Pakistan, provides for the appointment of a neutral expert by the World Bank as a last option to resolve water-related issues between the two countries.
The Kishanganga plant, in Bandipora district of north Kashmir, is part of a run-of-the-river hydroelectric scheme that is designed to divert water from the Kishanganga river to a power plant in the Jhelum river basin.
This can be posted in the power sector thread as well. Feel free to spread the good news.
