All good projects except Grand Crescent Hotel.
I have reservations about the project because it will encroach upon the grounds of the Frere Hall, a public heritage monument, and will result in the architectural downgrading of the building.

KARACHI: A Hindu temple or mandir located under Native Jetty Bridge has become the focus of what is developing into a battle between two groups - the Hindus who worship there and the firm that wants to build a food street next door. Not lagging far behind are the political agents who bring the two together.

The dispute is not actually over the temple, but the 5,750 square feet area in front of it that the worshippers use on special occasions when their numbers increase. Now, the company building the food street wants to erect a boundary wall in front of the mandir for what it says is to maintain the privacy of the worshippers. The ground will be left empty but the company expects to landscape it and leave it as an open space for the people who visit the food street.

Some of the Hindus argue, however, that by building a boundary wall between the mandir and the ground, the company will be effectively cutting off the space that they use.

The land in question belongs to the Karachi Port Trust.

On Monday evening, a meeting was held by the Hindus concerned and an eight-member committee was formed to tackle the issue. The committee consists of the president, secretary and general secretary of the Hindu Panchayat. The meeting was attended by Advisor to Prime Minister on Minorities, Kishan Chand Parwani, Pakistan Hindu Council General Secretary Visharam A. Tharwami, Hindu Panchayat President MPA Mukesh Chawla and MPA Dr. Ramesh Kumar amongst others.

During the meeting, Hindu residents of the area and other worshippers demanded that they be given back the land. “The area should be restored and the road should be preserved for worshippers only,” said Advisor Parwani. “The area where mandirs are established are places for worshippers and should be preserved for them.”

To complicate matters, the company claims that an agreement was signed with an MPA representing the Hindus, allowing for the boundary wall to be built and saying that the company would in turn help renovate the temple.

“We signed an agreement around six to seven months ago with MPA Mukesh Chawla, the president of the Hindu Panchayat, and other members,” CEO of Grand Leisure Corporation, Imran Husain, told Daily Times. “According to the agreement we will contribute partly to the renovation of the mandir and the rest will be contributed by the panchayat itself.”

Chawla said, however, that no agreement had been signed. “I never signed any agreement with anyone,” he told Daily Times. “We negotiated about the construction orally around two years back.” He admitted, however, that it was true that the company will spend one million rupees on the renovation of the mandir.

The Karachi Port Trust’s (KPT) Brigadier Zaidi backed the company, however, and told Daily Times that all of the land belonged to KPT which allotted it on a tender’s basis to Grand Leisure Corporation. “There was an agreement signed between the Hindu Panchayat and the said corporation but I don’t know what its details are,” Zaidi said, adding that as far as he knew, the panchayat (with Chawla) signed the agreement but a group from the community later objected to it. “It is difficult to go through the entire community and convince everybody when the corporation had dealt with the main representatives which I think was enough.”

Aside from the different claims over the agreement, the distance at which the boundary wall is supposed to be built is also disputed. “The boundary wall will be a minimum distance of 25 ft away from the mandir as per the panachayat’s demand and increases towards the courtyard adjacent to the mandir,” Husain said.

Eshwal Lal refuted this claim by saying that first KPT decided to stretch the boundary wall 10 feet away from the front of the mandir but later on increased it to 25 feet. “Now the worshippers are demanding 300 ft of the land and I will strive for it,” he said.

The company expects to attract 3,000 to 5,000 people to the food street daily which is why it argues the wall is needed. “We are also making sitting places for the Hindu worshippers in their territory while in our territory there will be a garden and free space,” Husain said.

“Our architects visited the mandir five to six times. They worked there for fifteen to twenty days to measure the interior and exterior of the mandir for renovation and the Maharaj and most of the worshippers were aware of what we were doing,” Husain claimed. “The architects took photographs of all sides of the mandir and then we designed everything to scale.” He showed this reporter the maps and photographs but not the agreement he referred to.

Some of the Hindus object to the food street as they are vegetarians and the smell of cooking flesh right next door would be offensive to them.

Earlier, on Sunday, a large number of Hindus protested outside the Karachi press club claiming that the mandir had been partly demolished. The protest was led by ex-MNA Dr Khatumal Jeewan, PPP minority wing President Prof. Anwar Lal Din and the Mandir Bachao Committee’s Ashok Jethmalani.

“The area is Hindu property. There was another mandir, named Jain Manir known as Jhoole Lal, in the free space in front of the mandir but it was demolished a few years after Partition when its proprietors moved to India,” claimed Subash Chandra a worshipper.

If a boundary wall is built in front of the mandir, there will only be enough space for a car to enter.

“Most events are celebrated outside the mandir such as the bhajang (religious versus),” Chandra said. “Tents are erected and trucks and pick-ups need to come through.”

Each week there is a gathering and on big religious occasions such as Raksha Bandhan and Ganesh Janti large statues of the deities are brought the mandir. “Our praying will also be disturbed by the noise from the food street,” he said.

“This mandir is the only place in all of Karachi where we do the Kiryakaram as we have direct access to water here,” explained Subash. “People who can not afford to go to the Ganga come here to perform this religious ritual.” A large number of Hindus also come to the mandir on Poonam night (full moon) each month and their numbers go up on Chand Raat, how will we accommodate thousands of worshippers, said L. Lakhani.

There were allegations that MPA Mukesh Chawla permitted the construction to go ahead without consulting the Hindus at a gathering. Certain worshippers denied on Monday that any part of the mandir had been demolished.

They should not take the land from the Hindus, even if it's owned by KPT. If anything, they should gift them.

Secondly, the food street area seems pretty dirty, I wonder how many poeple would be attracted. Also, it's not a place where anyone goes to except for office timings. Let's see how it comes along.

I think the current development of I.I. Chundrigarh to make it more attractive is basically leading into the concept of a 'food street' in the area. I really hope they're taking care of the infrastructure and sewer system there before building it up further, otherwise even a 'normal' flood in that area would be very costly.

KARACHI, May 17: President of the Native Jetty Mandir Bachao Action Committee exMNA Dr Khatumal Jeewan has informed KPT chairman that the illegal occupation and unauthorized work on the centuries-old Laxmi Narain Temple is still under way in contravention of the concerned minorities’ will and desire.
In his letter sent to the KPT chairman on Wednesday, Dr Jeewan regretted the government’s indifference demonstrated in this regard, saying that it seemed the authorities concerned, mainly the KPT, had ig nored the minorities’ protests.

“Nobody is ready to listen to the protests from the minority community,” he deplored, adding that the KPT, being custodian of the historic temple should direct the GLC management to stop the work on the premises of the Jhoolay Lal Temple and push back the proposed wall to at least 300 feet from the Laxmi Narain Temple.

He said the Hindu community believed that the authorities ought to respect the minority’s right and freedom of worship.—PPI

EXPOCITY, project at Port Qasim has been given the formal go-ahead, according to an announcement of commencement of construction made this week at the assembly of the World Trade Centers Association.

The announcement for the commencement of construction would follow renewal of relevant approvals from the federal government, business leaders said in Karachi on Thursday.

Guy F. Tozzoli, President World Trade Centers Association and Shahid Firoz, President, World Trade Center, Karachi met earlier this month and discussed plans for the foundation stone laying ceremony of the multi-million dollar World Trade Centre project being built at Port Qasim.

During the meeting, Firoz and the WTCA committee for New Centre Development discussed the updated development plans for the upcoming World Trade Center (EXPOCITY Complex) in Karachi.

"It will change the way Pakistan will do business," commented Shahid Firoz, who heads the World Trade Centre, Karachi, and is a member of the New York-based worldwide committee on Trade fairs and trade marts.

The WTCA assured its fullest support for the implementation of this prestigious project, which is expected to be one of the most significant developments in this region. The WTCA Board also gave approval for four new centres to be established worldwide which will bring the number of all WTC’s to 282.

These WTC’s are located in 78 countries of the world and cater globally to the needs of millions of small, medium and large businesses.

Imran Hussain, the CEO of WTC Karachi expressed his delight at the commencement of work on this project. Hussain said that this international standard exhibition centre would be built at Port Qasim. This facility would encompass a wide range of services.

The World Trade Centre (EXPOCITY Project) has been approved by the ECC and will provide a range of activities focused around an exhibition and fair grounds where exhibitions and fairs of an international scale and standard can be staged. It includes a convention centre, a business area, a teleport, a mall, and entertainment centre.

The international standard EXPOCITY Complex will have a car parking facility of 8,000 and convention centre for 3,000 people. The project is the first of its kind in Pakistan in terms of size as well as concept. It will be a launching platform for economic activity by providing enough space to accommodate large events. It will change the perspective of Pakistani exporters and will be an ideal area to market their products.

The project will provide easy access to Pakistan for foreign buyers and a comfortable meeting place and will help showcase Pakistan.

The “Terrace Garden” in the Old Clifton area has now returned in a novel form for millions of Karachiites who had built sweet memories at the place. The garden that was left in despair for several years has now been revived with the help of the private sector. Governor Sindh, Dr. Ishratul Ebad will inaugurate it on Wednesday (today) evening.

Located in the historical vicinity of Old Clifton, the garden is spread over an area of 85,000sq ft and can be distinguished from the other recreational areas in the city due to its division in various height levels.

If explored historically, the garden brings a significant status because of the eminent societies that had been settled in the surroundings and also of the historical figures - including the Quaid-e-Azam — who used to visit the place frequently and had spent valuable time over there.

The unique stature of the place had allowed the visitors to take the view of the sand dunes following the beautiful sea from extensive heights. There’s an old church on the right side and a mosque on the left while the well-known Mohatta Palace leads the way to its entrance.

Old residents of the city say that the place was extraordinary in the 70s, when there was no construction and one used to enjoy the original sight that either showed dunes of sand or the beautiful sea. Many recall it as ‘Nazarah-gah’ or ‘Hawa Bandar.’ However, a small restaurant used to exist on the hilltop offering tea, coffee and ice cream. The restaurant is still there, now present within the boundary of the new garden.

Despite the fact that mostly affluent families had resided in the vicinity, nobody had come forward to stop the gradually emerging encroachment and develop this place, say government officials. The Grand Leisure Corporation (GLC) that was given the restaurant on lease at that time has now developed the garden, the foundation of which was laid by the governor two years ago.

The developers and the architects of the Terrace Garden believe that it’s an ideal location for public to come and relax for long hours. They have entitled it as the symbol of Pakistan.

According to the initial design that was made in 1994, the park was five times bigger than what has been renewed now,” disclosed the Chief Executive of the GLC, Imran Husain while speaking to The News.

He said that the encroachment that has come up to the terraces has left lesser space for the garden. “We had to protect this place from being further encroached upon,” said Husain who revealed that the encroachers tried to grab the area even after the construction had started.

Besides the aesthetic features, the garden holds a beautiful fountain that would change its colours. “The evolving colours of the fountain would denote the diversities of Pakistani society,” said Husain. He said that the names of eminent people - who use to visit the place — will be highlighted in the garden.

Explaining the concept on which Terrace Garden has been developed, its Architect, Sabih-ul Haq said that it’s like an ‘Afghan carpet’ that comprises different colours, patterns and proportions. It’s a blend of old and modern concepts, he said.

Many old citizens also recall that the place was quite famous amongst couples for its romantic environment and that is one reason many a times, it was loaded with lovebirds. However, sizeable number of public used to visit the place on weekends.

Apart from its revival after decades, the developers of this wonder regret that they couldn’t restore the original view of the place. “Unfortunately, the encroachments (that have now turned into Neelam and Larkana colonies) that have emerged on the hills have blocked the sea sight,” maintained Husain.

The revival of Terrace Garden has come as great news for many who hunt for the peaceful and natural environments in the metropolis. However, many old citizens who couldn’t forget the original state of the place still suggest that the government should remove the encroachment from the entire periphery to revive the old site completely.

As long as the food is good the idea should work well. In Karachi eating out is probably the number one form of entertainment.

For a long, long time I've heard discussions in my circle of family and friends about how a food related place with multiple outlets would work well.

I don't know if this particular place will have several restaurants or only one and if they'll all be owned by the same people or have separate ownership. But I think there's still room in the market for someone to build a food mall with dozens of restaurants with different kinds of foods and owned by various people. Kind of like a food court in a mall but with better quality restaurants.
