Does your city have any diagonal crossing? It's where you cross the street diagonally.

Here's one in Tokyo :)

I've never actually seen the crossing being marked like it is in the first post.

There's one in Melbourne at the corner of Flinders and Elizabeth St connecting the streets, the station and the tram terminus but I don't even know if it's marked. You just look at the pedestrian flow to realise that you can cross in any direction.

Those types of crossings are pretty much limited to Asia.

There's no diagonal crossings in Poland at all.

We have them in the UK in some places. Not much choice really because our city centre street layouts are somewhat eratic.

I imagine these crossings are common at intersections where both roads have many turning vehicles. One light for one roadway, one light for the other roadway, and one light for pedestrians. That way cars can turn without waiting forever for people to cross.

Those would be so useful in NYC. We have these sharp 90* corners which we must cross twice to get to otherwise.

They have diagonal ped crossings like that in Honolulu Hawaii. Specifically they were located where a one-way street ended at another street, where the only reason for a stop light was for peds

You'll find a lot in Sydney and Parramatta in Australia, of course only at the busiest pedestrian intersections.

Always love the picture of the one(s?) in Tokyo!

Not exactly like that one in Tokyo, but there's one crossing at Triangeln (one of the busiest areas) in Malmö that has some sort of "Y"-crossing. It's not comparable to the Asian ones though...

this is the one in Ginza, i also loved the well known crossing in Shibuya. pedestrians take over the road! we could use some of these in Holland.

I kinda hate walking through a diagonal crossing because once you walk close to the center theres just so many people coming from all sides its very hard to make it to the other side.

There are a few of these around the Bay Area, but they don't actually paint the diagonal crosswalks.

Here's one in Oakland Chinatown:

From what I can remember there are 2 in Tokyo. One is the famous Hachiko Crossing in Shibuya and the other is the Sukiyabashi Crossing in Ginza.

Osaka has one in Namba outside Takashimaya as well. I can't think of any other 'scramble crossings' that I've come across, although, I hasten to add, Oxford Circus could definitely do with one!

Adelaide has just one at the intersection of Pulteney Street and Rundle Streets. The diagonals are not marked in, and before a few months ago there were no pedestrian signals for diagonal crossings at the intersection. I saw some people used to cross two individual crossings instead of going diagonal a few times.

Agreed. There are diagonal crossings... just not specifically marked crossings. Rather, people cross diagonally at will, risking their lives as they do so.

i dont know any of that here in budapest. for those intersections where there are too much traffic we have underground crossing with an entrance to the subway.

In Brisbane we also have

Queen street and Edward Street
and
Adelaide and Albert Street.

I think that equals about 5 in Brisbane. We don't have them painted on the ground though like in the original picture.

Singapore tested out a diagonal crossing scheme at one of its traffic junctions in the Central Business District in the early 2000s. It never got expanded and has since been removed.
