View Full Version : Is this the best designed comieblock in the world? Manila-X January 4th, 2006, 04:47 AM I have a thread on public housing on the Citytalk and Urban Issues section :) Here's one good design from HK and it won several awards. Lai Tak Tsuen http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/20051012/RIMG0182.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/hongkong/20051012/RIMG0205.jpg Harkeb January 4th, 2006, 06:28 AM PUblic housing blocks in Asia look so monotonous(?). Like rows and rows of dominoes. No individuality, like the people. Yikes! Manila-X January 4th, 2006, 06:33 AM PUblic housing blocks in Asia look so monotonous(?). Like rows and rows of dominoes. No individuality, like the people. Yikes! At least most public housing in Asia are in better conditions and are safer compared to Europe or The Americas! KGB January 4th, 2006, 06:42 AM To answer your question....no. Those Belgrade "buildings" are not necessarily bad in terms of architecture, but the overall design as it relates to the context of the site is awful. No street grid, no mixed-use...huge amounts of useless space. Where do you have to walk to catch transit or shop or school, libraries, etc, etc. KGB Manila-X January 4th, 2006, 06:56 AM To answer your question....no. But I think he's talking about the design of the housing estate architecture wise which to me is not the best. I've seen similar ones in France! dogyears January 4th, 2006, 08:28 AM http://www.zvezdara.com/Galerija/Ptica/images/Ist-Kapija---Konjarnik.jpg Belgrade,70s :eek2: That's pretty cool. LordMarshall January 4th, 2006, 08:29 AM never liked commie blocks. they seem to sap the life out of you. this belgrade thing looks like it was designed to call the aliens Manila-X January 4th, 2006, 08:33 AM never liked commie blocks. they seem to sap the life out of you. this belgrade thing looks like it was designed to call the aliens Very True :D Anyway, I still prefer housing estates to slums :) dogyears January 4th, 2006, 08:39 AM never liked commie blocks. they seem to sap the life out of you. this belgrade thing looks like it was designed to call the aliens I think that's a part of the appeal. It's just so surreal and sci-fi. Here are some of the more dramatic panaormas I took of the Pearl Bank in Singapore. It's pretty run-down, and certainly inspiries vertigo when you're on the top ! http://img476.imageshack.us/img476/1208/pano823qm.jpg http://img476.imageshack.us/img476/9308/pano43jr.jpg http://img470.imageshack.us/img470/3183/darkto4wer3vi.jpg Manila-X January 4th, 2006, 08:43 AM It's the same feeling when looking down at Lai Tak Tsuen or The Ponte City Apartments in HK. But this one, you have a nice view of Singapore! Anyway, I see them from the outside. I want to see how they look in the inside! redstone January 4th, 2006, 06:37 PM Some of the newer public flats in Singapore tend to look like condos. http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/9195/sk0mn.jpg New public housing in Sengkang town, completed less than a year ago. Marcanadian January 4th, 2006, 08:49 PM Yowza. Thats pretty awesome samsonyuen January 4th, 2006, 11:47 PM It looks pretty neat, but it must get lonely at night... salvius January 5th, 2006, 12:11 AM Indeed, in terms of scale, this is all wrong. Unfortunately, much, though not all, of New Belgrade suffers from this type of ailment. There is a real contrast between the human-scaled and friendly old town and the commieblock mess that has spawned around it. At the time someone actually thought it was a good idea, I guess. Jules January 5th, 2006, 01:14 AM Manhattan projects=best in the world. Gosetsuke January 5th, 2006, 04:34 AM Sorry, I don't like it Oriolus January 5th, 2006, 07:36 AM The Ponte City Apartments in HK.You mean in Johannesburg? (54 storeys/173 metres). At one stage there was a proposal to turn it into a highrise prison - I know most commieblocks are bad but damn... :) Apparentely when it was built in 1975 it was a very desirable address. http://images.google.com.au/url?q=http://www.amethyst.co.za/JhbLandmarks/Ponte.jpg the hollow core http://www.archidose.org/Blog/ponte.jpg LordMarshall January 5th, 2006, 08:46 AM I lived in commie blocks for some time. It wasn’t surrealistic for me. The size and the unimaginative architecture make it look like a storage facility for the great mass of humanity. It reminds me of the movie Metropolis we live in these cold concrete boxes and go to another concrete box to work, then we die and are recycled. Now I have nothing against large apartment blocks but I feel that architecturally they need to be made more appealing. I still think that the Belgrade thing was designed to call the other side ;) LordMarshall January 5th, 2006, 08:49 AM This is in Sarajevo. http://www.h1arch.tuwien.ac.at/hb1/sarajevo/Alben/Bilder/Ciglane_jpg.jpg Manila-X January 5th, 2006, 09:00 AM You mean in Johannesburg? I actually made a mistake typing that one! Well it was one of the best flats in Joburg but the Hillbrow area became dangerous after the apartheid era and alot of Nigerian drug lords had units in that place. I think the conditions there have improved but I wouldn't like to see a prison dominating Joburg's skyline! dogyears January 5th, 2006, 01:36 PM I lived in commie blocks for some time. I still think that the Belgrade thing was designed to call the other side ;) I guess that is a point where we differ. To me at least, ugliness is it's own appeal - while I certainly don't expect everyone to share my sentiments, I have been to a few apartments in these commies I they are actually lot more hospitable than you might imagine. Probabily doesn't speak for all of them, but at least a few are OK. While we're on the topic of well designed commies, there's a new development in Singapore http://img73.photobucket.com/albums/v222/ylstan03/Duxton/DSCN15101.jpg (picture courtesy of rafflescity) which is what I consider a pretty decent housing block, architecturally. LordMarshall January 5th, 2006, 11:02 PM now this tower has class. my problam is the majority of EE buildings are boxes with windows. samsonyuen January 5th, 2006, 11:42 PM Wow, these are some really cool looking buildings!
