I love public housing!!!This one is especially nice.

At least most public housing in Asia are in better conditions and are safer compared to Europe or The Americas!

To answer your question....no.

Those Belgrade "buildings" are not necessarily bad in terms of architecture, but the overall design as it relates to the context of the site is awful. No street grid, no mixed-use...huge amounts of useless space. Where do you have to walk to catch transit or shop or school, libraries, etc, etc.

True. But I think he's talking about the design of the housing estate architecture wise which to me is not the best. I've seen similar ones in France!

I think that's a part of the appeal. It's just so surreal and sci-fi. Here are some of the more dramatic panaormas I took of the Pearl Bank in Singapore. It's pretty run-down, and certainly inspiries vertigo when you're on the top !

It's the same feeling when looking down at Lai Tak Tsuen or The Ponte City Apartments in HK. But this one, you have a nice view of Singapore!

Anyway, I see them from the outside. I want to see how they look in the inside!

Some of the newer public flats in Singapore tend to look like condos.

It looks pretty neat, but it must get lonely at night...

Indeed, in terms of scale, this is all wrong. Unfortunately, much, though not all, of New Belgrade suffers from this type of ailment. There is a real contrast between the human-scaled and friendly old town and the commieblock mess that has spawned around it. At the time someone actually thought it was a good idea, I guess.

The Ponte City Apartments in HK.You mean in Johannesburg? (54 storeys/173 metres). At one stage there was a proposal to turn it into a highrise prison - I know most commieblocks are bad but damn... :) Apparentely when it was built in 1975 it was a very desirable address.

I lived in commie blocks for some time. It wasn’t surrealistic for me. The size and the unimaginative architecture make it look like a storage facility for the great mass of humanity. It reminds me of the movie Metropolis we live in these cold concrete boxes and go to another concrete box to work, then we die and are recycled.

Now I have nothing against large apartment blocks but I feel that architecturally they need to be made more appealing.

I still think that the Belgrade thing was designed to call the other side ;)

oops my bad! I actually made a mistake typing that one!

Well it was one of the best flats in Joburg but the Hillbrow area became dangerous after the apartheid era and alot of Nigerian drug lords had units in that place.

I think the conditions there have improved but I wouldn't like to see a prison dominating Joburg's skyline!

I guess that is a point where we differ.

To me at least, ugliness is it's own appeal - while I certainly don't expect everyone to share my sentiments, I have been to a few apartments in these commies I they are actually lot more hospitable than you might imagine. Probabily doesn't speak for all of them, but at least a few are OK.
