Inabowl January 7th, 2006, 12:40 PM The towns around Tokyo Station are the true heart of Tokyo, Ginza also is the one. It makes the western downtowns (i.e. Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, etc.) look like some kind of tacky rubbish. I just love the feeling of Tokyo's city centre.
raymond_tung88 January 9th, 2006, 04:04 AM Beautiful!!! Ginza is Tokyo's most upscale shopping district right or is it the boutiques on Omotesando?
coldstar January 9th, 2006, 06:32 AM Beautiful!!! Ginza is Tokyo's most upscale shopping district right or is it the boutiques on Omotesando?
as for the brand-name items, Omotesando/Aoyama district wins definitely (scale and specie).

Wait a tick! Are you seeing there is a district that's even more upscale than Ginza!
raymond_tung88 February 13th, 2006, 04:51 PM Wait a tick! Are you seeing there is a district that's even more upscale than Ginza!
Can you not read? I'm asking if the Ginza or Omotesando is the most upscale because I don't know. They seem to have the same stores. I just want to know which one is THE designated luxury shopping area.
demanjo February 14th, 2006, 06:20 AM Just got back from tokyo, i didnt do alot of shopping because im not a brand name kinda guy.
I think Ginza is more upmarket than Omote sando. I much prefer Omote Sando and Harajuku, including Takeshita dori.
I really dont like Ginza at all. An elitist vibe soaks the streets and stores.
Vapour February 14th, 2006, 09:12 AM Indeed Omotesando/Harajuku is way better than Ginza in terms of "urban experience" and probably brand shopping (I don't care about brands though), but I guess Ginza is still the place to be for those over 40 years old when it comes to upscale shopping.

onmyoji March 6th, 2006, 08:17 PM Can be Ginza considerated the real Tokyo downtown (as part of chuo-ku) while shinjuku is more like an uptown?
princeofseoul March 7th, 2006, 07:22 AM I'd say Chiyoda-ku and everything within 2-3 km of it (for a total area of 40 km2 or so) is "downtown" and hard to separate. All the places of interest are there and follow one another in a circle: Asakusa -> Ueno -> U-Tokyo -> Shiodome -> Ginza -> Marunouchi -> Akasaka -> Roppongi -> Aoyama -> Ebizu -> Shibuya -> Omotesando/Harajuku -> Shinjuku -> Ikebukuro.
Ikebukuro is a bit more distanced to the others - maybe this could be classified as "uptown". Anyway, the classifications uptown and downtown really only make sense in Manhattan where they originated.. In the other cities, things are layed out differently.
onmyoji March 7th, 2006, 10:15 AM Yes, in fact I agree with you!..thanks for your opinion
Mosaic April 4th, 2006, 08:55 AM Ginza is incredible indeed. it's really dense but clean and vibrant.

At the same time, nowadays such prestigious boutiques have been poping up one after another in Marunouchi and Akasaka.
There are no department stores in Marunouchi and Akasaka, but both areas (as well as Omotesando) begins to overwhelm Ginza somewhat.
Just walk on Marunouchi Naka Street and look at the shops along the street. Marunouchi Naka Street is not so far away from Ginza. (maybe 5 minutes walk or so)
