View Full Version : Downtown LB is doing much better than Downtown LA
CarsonCaliBrotha January 5th, 2006, 07:50 PM I'm serious. I went there for the first time in over a year the other day, and it's on theright track. Unlike DTLA, it has everything you'd need within walking distance. I mean, just within a 3 block radius, there was AMC Theaters, Sizzler, an "urban" clothing store(They even had LRG!!), Bath and Body Works, Nordstrom, EB Games, hell they even built a Wal Mart! I also heard a new Albertsons was being built there. Also, there were many places to eat around that were built recently. Not to mention it's all easily accessible by the Long Beach Transit if you don't feel like walking. And the Blue Line has 3-4 stops in the area, so your never too far from it. Yes, Downtown LA may be Skyscraper Capital of the area, but Downtown Long Beach is a MUCH better place to live IMO. Not to mention there's not as bad of a homeless problem, and it's right along the coastline.
redspork02 January 5th, 2006, 08:12 PM Thats Awesome MAybe In THe Far Future BothSkylines Will Connect Along The corridor.
danparker276 January 5th, 2006, 09:11 PM Sizzler? I'd rather have Mortons and the Lakers.
And I'd rather have a homeless problem than a gang problem.
Just joking though, both should be great. I'd live in dt long beach if I worked in OC.

lol no, not everyone that visits a place wants 5-star dining everytime. Downtown LA only has Quiznos and stuff like that. They need a better selection of stores.
PotatoGuy January 5th, 2006, 10:10 PM it's probably doing better and attracting more people because of the beach, and dtla has a bad rep
danparker276 January 5th, 2006, 11:51 PM Downtown has a lot of restaurants.
Even just on Fig, Roys just opened up, Fox sports bar, palms, Dennys, holiday inn, that Wokcano place, california pizza kitchen and a food court on 7th and fig.
Then you got Little tokyo, (they got a shabu shabu place $12 all you can drink)
and China town is close by.
FROM LOS ANGELES January 6th, 2006, 01:12 AM Would rather live in the real dt, although LB is pretty nice also.
Caliguy2005 January 6th, 2006, 03:23 AM The Entire L.A Metro Area is going through a Revitilization Process in my opinion....The once Ugly and Dangerous areas of L.A are now being transformed to more Attractive and Safer Areas...
Los Angeles is definately becoming Bigger,Better and Safer :-)

Hold up, did you say all you can "drink" for $12.00??????
:master:
Manila-X January 6th, 2006, 04:37 AM For now, downtown Long Beach is better than downtown LA but how about in the future when all those developments in downtown LA are in effect.
But I still think downtown Santa Monica to be the liveliest and downtown Hawthorne, the most boring!
LA-dude January 6th, 2006, 04:39 AM hawthorne has a dtwn....wtf????....i lived there for 4 years and never realized
Manila-X January 6th, 2006, 04:49 AM hawthorne has a dtwn....wtf????....i lived there for 4 years and never realized
Not really a downtown but there was a mall there several years back but it has been abandoned.
How about downtown El Segundo? You got mid-rise office parks there but not too much commericial/shopping centres.
Fern~Fern* January 6th, 2006, 04:52 AM hawthorne has a dtwn....wtf????....i lived there for 4 years and never realized
Maybe on Hawthorne Blvd or something????
LA-dude January 6th, 2006, 04:56 AM ^^........i dont think that even counts as downtown....if they try to say that.......well.....then theyre dumb.....if the people who live there dont realize it....how will outsiders??? :ohno:

That's harsh, give Downtown Hawthorne some credit. They have a hometown buffet and a surplus store!
LA-dude January 6th, 2006, 05:28 AM ^^ lol
Manila-X January 6th, 2006, 05:42 AM Even Culver City has a downtown though I find it one of the most unattractive downtowns when I was there. Don't know today but I think the place has liven up abit :)
CarsonCaliBrotha January 6th, 2006, 05:47 AM That's harsh, give Downtown Hawthorne some credit. They have a hometown buffet and a surplus store!
I hate that Hometown Buffet. Its all old people in there.
Fern~Fern* January 6th, 2006, 06:30 AM I hate that Hometown Buffet. Its all old people in there.
I've never been inside that one. But if you drive by on the weekends, the line is out the door. That's no joke!
That's why I rather go t the one on Sepulveda by LAX!
danparker276 January 6th, 2006, 06:38 AM yeah all you can drink for $12 (beer and sake), it's in little tokyo. You probably have to buy food there though, I think it's $15-20 for beef shabu shabu, $20 all you can eat. The food is really good too.
I think it's off los angeles street, it's a 3-4 story restaurant complex. It's above the japanese supermarket. I forget the name.

All of the ones I've been to are like that on weekends.
ChrisLA January 6th, 2006, 09:28 AM How about downtown El Segundo? You got mid-rise office parks there but not too much commericial/shopping centres.
Actually El Segundo has a rather nice downtown with numerous commerical, retail, and restaurants. The numberous highrises is really just a business district, and nothing else. The real downtown is actually a mile or two east of the business district, and I believe its Main Street (?) what its centered around. I used work in El Segundo, and sometimes I would head over the downtown area for lunch. Its a rather quaint, yet lively area that caters to residents. Its common to see couples, and families strolling down Main Street in the evenings on a nice evening. Its also well known by the business crowd as lunch time at the dinners/restaurants are quite busy with workers. The residental side of El Segundo is actually quite nice, pedestrian friendly, and yet very hilly. They also have a large farmers market one day during the week. Once my car was park before it the farmers market began. I was at lunch and came back to find my car blocked in. Just that quick they had closed off the street and set up the booths. I have to say they are quick setting up, and very well organized. You guys should check it out sometime, its like a hidden treasure. There are some very good places to eat and drink coffee, get ice cream, and yet the Starbucks, and 31 Flavors hasn't taken over it YET.

I agree that El Segundo has a really nice business district. But the athmosphere is not as vibrant or lively as Santa Monica or Long Beach. But it's still a nice area, very quiet as well :)

hey...let me know when you're going..I can ask a couple friends of mine to go too! I hope it's true!! $12 all you can drink...maybe we should have a get together of some sort, with all the forumers ...the "legal" forumers
FROM LOS ANGELES January 6th, 2006, 06:26 PM doh, not legal yet.

I'm not trying to compare them since El Segundo is such a small city of maybe 25,000. I was mostly just pointing out that the city does have a traditional older downtown that isn't part of the large office parks and highrises. Btw I hear during the day the population swells well above 100,000 in this little city.
I would say out of the suburban downtowns in the metro, Santa Monica is the most vibrant, Pasadena not far behind, and then Long Beach downtown, & 2nd Street in Belmont Shores.
EDIT: I almost forgot about Huntington Park, it may even rival Santa Monica in pedestrian traffic. Pacific Avenue is quite vibrant and busy, and even many big cities in American would envious how much activity this little city has.

Agreed, El Segundo is has a nice small town feel to it. I have to say the business area has a nice futuristic look to it. The green Line is elevated and it turns in between the buildings.

How is it 213 in Long Beach?
danparker276 January 7th, 2006, 01:13 AM No, this is downtown LA.
PotatoGuy January 7th, 2006, 02:30 AM Beer is legal for over 18 years old in Canada. ;)
and Mexico and many other nations haha, not fair...
bobyahead January 7th, 2006, 12:50 PM okay i just typed a very long response and it didn't go through so im pretty bummed. but yea,
carsoncalibrotha is right. i was raised out in long beach all my life and it has gotten way better from what it used to be.
its not very well known, but for locals, its a great place to go. they have the old downtown where, you find a lot of clubs and bars. AND A HOOTERS! haha. they have a few indie urban shops. proper, black market, and a bunch of great local coffea spots.
but if you go down to the pike. keep going all the way down pine until you can't anymore... there is a lot of places to go. my route of choice? at night its all the way down the 710 towards downtown , dont exit 3rd, and keep on going down where it turns into shorline drive. at night its a wonderful view. the parking structures are very well light and its just pretty. haha. well at night its best to walk the pike , walk behind the restuarants (gladstones, pf changs, tokyo wacko, chilies, outback, bubba gumps, a great place to eat) and stroll the harbor... its very quite and the lighting is just perfect. its an affordable place to bring a date. you can kill the whole night just in downtown long beach. go watch a movie, grab a bite and then walk the harbor.
AND SINCE I LOVE THIS FORUM! there is a place that not a lot of ppl know of. its wonderful just to jog or walk at night. you turn into aqurium way, go past bubba gump and make a left... go all the way down, you hit the parking lot behind the aqurium and park. its a breath taking view of the ocean and the blueline (the bridge to queen mary)
this place was used to be out in the open, but now is hidden behind the restaurants and the aqurium. so i guess a lot of ppl think its not reachable anymore. but oh, it is! there is only one road to get there, and not a lot of ppl know where its at.
its a great place to walk , sit down, picnic and relax.
i really hope some one you guys take the time to visit. its a great place. the crime is almost down to none. honestly. there are still a few immature kids that go there and act all tough. but there are a lot of cops on bikes. i used to work across the street, and the only thing i seen were drunk ppl acting a fool hahah.
but yea, long beach is about to makeover its once successful farmers market and promenade. they are moving the farmers market back to the promenade, where they will, hopefully have a new hotel with opposite Lofts. with the market in between, long beach can't loose.
also, i think we have one of the best drives. go down ocean blvd. starting from the worldtrade center. go east and you will see new high raise condos and lots on the right and big buildings on the left. continue into alamitos bay and you will be enveloped in shade provided by the many tropical feeling apartments and condos. pass cherry and you are introduced to a view that goes beyond the limits of the eye. on good days the ocean is stunning with the sun glistening off the waters, its almost orgasmic. to the left you have these stunning homes that not a lot of ppl know about. there are a few nice old ones, but a lot of them went under the knives and got a face lift. then you can either head right and end up at belmont and its pier, or stay left and head for second street where they have good eats and affordable shopping. grab a drink from jamba juice and walk the strip. its a good time. go down a little more and you hit naples. long beachs hidden jewel. its stunning!!! mark mcguire even owned a home there. and if you keep going down second street, JOES CRAB SHACK!!!! haha well i hope you guys take the time and go sight seeing. its worth it on a nice day! especially today!! what was it? 78 degress in the middle of jan? thats freaking awesome!!! i love SO CAL!
Fern~Fern* January 7th, 2006, 09:33 PM ^^ Good looking out!!!!
FROM LOS ANGELES January 8th, 2006, 01:00 AM Isn't there a place where not legal people can drink without getting busted, that isn't a cackhouse? :jk: Has anybody seen Shanghai Noon, LB comes out a lot. Btw I always wanted to take a stroll down the harbor at night.
