silvermb March 16th, 2003, 11:32 AM someone needed to start this thread, but anyway there's still plenty of life in this development to come.

tayser March 16th, 2003, 12:32 PM what were the latest sales figures on the conder ? 1/3 ? 1/2 ?
quite a grand way to start a thread silvermb, well done son! bwah ;)
tays
Dean March 16th, 2003, 12:53 PM Last time i looked the Conder was at 115/197 sold. Construction will start mid year.
BTW. That's one big podium.
Cheers

chrisaus March 16th, 2003, 04:49 PM how long has the planning of the whole docklands precint been happening for ?
whats the stuff in the 3rd shot:?
i love how melbourne can form a little shopping/cafe area in the middle of whoop whoop and it still remands vibrant, if that was created in perth, the shops would die fast, good signs of things to come !!!
who's the developer ?
Grollo March 17th, 2003, 01:17 AM They have only started the eastern half of the precinct as well.
They are still allowed one 100m high tower (all hieghts to roof of highest habitable floor, not including LMR, spires etc.) in the eatsern precinct (behind Conder). It is currently proposed to be a commercial tower with a height of around 125m (including 25m of LMR...) although earlier it was proposed to be a hotel and it could end up being either.
They are also allowed to build 60m high commerical buildings behind the residential towers, probably 3 or 4 depending on what plan/model you look at.
The western half of the precinct can contain one 100m high tower and other 75m high towers. Most plans I have seen show three 75m towers and the 100m, but it is more likely that five 75m towers will be built which is the same as what is going up in the eastern precinct.
You can see the western precinct in this pic in front of Waterfront City which is in between the western and eastern precincts:

silvermb March 30th, 2003, 10:43 AM Check out the bottom balcony. Couldn't tell but its either sheet metal of a metal based paint... whatever it was, it sure looks cool.
Black windows and a metal complexion, this tower will be imposing

tayser March 30th, 2003, 11:28 AM ya gotta admit though, all those "SOLD" signs dont look quite schmick on all the towers ;)
A-brain: bring it ON, the master renderings of Digital Harbour and MAB across the road make it more like an inner city precinct than a suburb, two words:
"nice" density ;)
tays
kasperluke March 30th, 2003, 01:52 PM I love looking at that model! I have seen it like 4 times now! hehe! every time I am down there.
Condor will complete that northern end of the habour nicely! I would like to know what they have planned for the south end of the habour!
And any word on that ferris wheel? When was constuction going to start June?
Philip Burt March 31st, 2003, 02:17 AM So good to see that the real Palladio at NewQuay looks so much better than the model of it. It's kind of unique in a way isn't it? The way that it tapers out, rather than in.
Clem April 1st, 2003, 08:43 AM So they're all named after Australian Artists?
ie Sidney Nolan
...?
Duff April 1st, 2003, 08:53 AM yeah i think so.
the 'arkley' is named after a friend of mines uncle, and he was an artist

I like how one of the Daddo clones had to appease the Sydney market by giving the dictionary meaning of harbour. I mean how dare we call Vic. Harbour a harbour. ;)
And to think I never watch that show and that is the story I stumble over. :D

A-brain May 6th, 2003, 04:46 PM If you check out NQ from a distance I reckon 'The Nolan' (the new tower pictured) is almost certaintly gonna be taller than any of the others..
Don't know the offical heights but the top of the core box is above the roofline of the other three.. so its gotta be pretty much topped out..

If you look closley at the model it looks like there are a couple more levels of Apartments with this latest building....i think! So it is probably close to topping out, like you said, could be one more rise!
Clem May 7th, 2003, 11:23 AM Well, using my strange and controversial technique, they appear to be pretty even, except from the one second from left.
http://www.fooled-forever.net/clem/ss/nq.jpg
... hmm?
Blabbyboy May 9th, 2003, 03:44 AM Are they going to expand the mini marina development?
The Nolan looks ordinary to me apart from the gold which is X-traordinary! That looks so unreal, it's like a render!
Conder don't look too bad. But the others are pretty underwhelming IMHO. Not really Katsalidis magic, is it?
A-brain May 10th, 2003, 05:02 AM Tenders out for Conder in the Saturday Age today !!
I think its great.. will look stunning standing on that major bend on the Harbour Esplanade .. a bit of a HM@S sibling..
A-brain May 10th, 2003, 06:57 AM Also..
Who was it that was saying Nolan wasn't gonna be taller than the others ??
Not me!!

Blabbyboy May 12th, 2003, 04:43 AM So is the Nolan going to be built on the current car park site?
Dean May 12th, 2003, 05:17 AM The nolan is UC right now... the Conder will go where the car park is now, hard up against Harbour Esplande.
Cheers
Dean - Melbourne
A-brain May 12th, 2003, 05:44 AM Errrm.. perhaps I should have pointed out.. The Nolan is that tower on the far left that is close to topping out.. and what I meant was as you can see it does appear taller than the others! This is despite it looking the same height in all other renders & models ...
A-brain May 21st, 2003, 03:40 PM Don't mean to keep bumping myself :D but I just noticed yesterday The Nolan appears to have risen *again* ..
The exposed core is now *way* above the rooflines of the other 3 towers and the core box is still there !! I wonder if 24 levels is accurate? Certaintly it appears to be going taller than most renderings and models have shown..
Great to see a building built higher than originally intended for once! At least it looks like it.

A-brain October 3rd, 2003, 12:53 PM Yeah baby!
Wow the past week or two has seen the next wave of major construction reach its peak!! ...
Check out this list of recent starters:
- Vic Point
- Conder
- RDT
- UWT
- SxC
- E&Y
- Village Docklands
& Verve 501 is imminent
About 1000m (or >3000ft) of height all going under construction in the past few weeks/months !!!
And theres a slowdown ??

silvermb November 6th, 2003, 11:50 PM the Nolan looks superb, not a sign of bare concrete in sight. i think the decision to paint the balconies sky blue was last minute, better than the silver anyhow. Nolan has the same colours as the Conder will have, possibly why the Nolan's balconies are blue. Bit of symmetry, three bare tower between the two similar coloured book-ends.

bearbrass November 7th, 2003, 12:56 AM I really like the look of the Conder it should look stunning on that important corner.
Blabbyboy November 8th, 2003, 08:15 AM Holy sheet! I've been out of it for so long - blink a few times and the NOlan's up! I take back my "not Katsalidis magic" comments - this is VERY nice! It's not up to the high water mark of Republic Tower, but it's still good!
finn November 8th, 2003, 08:20 AM Nolan looks great! I actually like all the NewQuay towers, including the ones with the simpler material finishes...especially Palladio.
Will Conder keep with a similar style? What about size? Is it the same height as the others or bigger/smaller?

I like the Palladio as well.. especially when u stand right under it and look up.
The conder will be about the same height as the other 4 towers but has the biggest podium ive seen on a resi tower.. its huge.

BigVman November 14th, 2003, 04:18 AM Speaking of NQ, went there yesterday with my little girl. Had a ball, recommend Brot if you want coffee and/or muffin, both excellent, and I eat a lot so I should know.
The Nolan is V schmick. The previous pic doesn't do it justice colourwise , at least on my monitor. That blue on the balcony is inspired. This place will rock in the years to come. Don't listen to the doomsayers and various BS artists.
BTW with 700 Collins well up and Watergate starting to DOMINATE the skyline (lol) the Lethal Leigh building U/c , oh yeah and the NAB stuff almots ready to open tha atmosphere will kick by next footy season.
bearbrass November 14th, 2003, 04:36 AM Yeah Docklands has to be one of the most exciting "brownfields" developments anywhere in the world at the moment and its only really just scratched the surface so far.
I reckon a major turing point in the publics perception of the area will be when Waterfront City is up and running.
What a privelege we Victorians have in being able to watch this massive undertaking unfold before our eyes over the next couple of decades - who would want to live anywhere else with all this going on?

dynamoultraclean November 26th, 2003, 03:47 AM In terms of architecture and design, the whole docklands precinct looks a lot like a modern Gold Coast. If Melbourne only had more favourable weather the year round it would be 10 fold bigger. I love it all!
In some of those shot you can see YE in the background which looks amazing through the construction which is only going to get denser. Then add in the colour of the NAB and…..wow.

Muse June 4th, 2004, 07:33 PM So from that pic, Conder looks about 3 levels above ground already with the 4th floorplate started (exposed core about 6). Must be very, very recent as silvermb's construction pics only posted on May 4 shows construction juuuuuuuust starting on the 2nd floorplate.
Go realestate.com.au!!
Comparing Conder's render from April 2002 to the most recent...different angles however.

Favco750 June 22nd, 2004, 02:28 PM Well spotted Tayser, I agree. That is the first one I have seen. Hanson is now the new name of Pioneer Concrete products, All there plant and vehicles will be undertaking a colour transformation over the next 18 months. Unfortunately, they will still be Pioneer. Management of Hanson, get the hint, everybody hates central dispatch. Why should a builder from melbourne be speaking to a dispatcher in Toowong, it's crazy!
silvermb June 23rd, 2004, 02:07 AM yep...another australian company bites the dust!

kasperluke June 23rd, 2004, 02:31 PM New kid on the [cement making] block?
dammit i knew it! :)
redden June 23rd, 2004, 03:58 PM The significance of Conder hit me on my recent visit, in that it connects NewQuay through to the Grand Plaza area. Previously, NewQuay looked so isolated, particularly as so much of the action was south of the Dome.
Muse June 24th, 2004, 01:43 AM Story of my life: The action has always been elsewhere. ;)
That makes sense Redden. We will gradually see all of Docklands making some kind of "urban sense". Everything won't be so isolated and on show. The developments so far are just the tip of the iceberg. Exciting times.
pics by silvermb...........yay!
tayser June 24th, 2004, 10:42 AM yep - that part of Docklands is really starting to come into its own - and as for the Conder itself, the pics speak for themselves ;)
Bronteboy June 25th, 2004, 06:27 AM Anzac frigate berths for Docklands latte
Here's an unusual sight folks: the Navy's shiniest new ship, the Anzac-class frigate HMAS Ballarat has berthed by the coffee shops at New Quay. Picked this up from The Age's photo this morning of the ship "squeezing" under the Bolte bridge, and detoured to drop into the deli there today anyway.
Rare to get up close to blue-water vessels in these security conscious days, and a clever bit of marketing by both Docklands authority and the ADF I'd say. Sorry i'm not photo-capable yet, but someone might get this pretty rare mix of elements. Also good to see Docklands name retains a real maritime connection. The deli lady showed me a publicity flyer. The ship's there for commissioning ceremony tomorrow: open to Docklands residents 11am to 1pm Sunday, and open to general public 1pm-4.30pm Sunday. cheers Bronte

Great news anyway, great design and more density in the docklands!
tayser July 9th, 2004, 03:39 PM Mixed feelings:
positive: woo hoo finally getting more than one line of buildings!
negative: wtf - it looks like another excessive car parking job. wtf is the point in having high-density developments when there's just as much car park as a suburban hell office park? honestly...
positive again: heard on Railpage that plans are / have / are about to be submitted for tram line running down the back and on to Waterfront City (Fountainhead?) with a diamond junction on Harbourside Esplanade / La Trobe Street extension..
Aussie Steve July 10th, 2004, 01:45 AM Tenders for the tram line were put out a few weeks ago. I am still confused as to where that tram line will go. I presume it will be up the middle of Docklands Blvd. But I still wish there was a tram line along Dudley St from the Vic Market

ciaobellaxo August 13th, 2004, 04:49 PM Went to a dinner with my work last Friday (haven't been able to post this until now due to my pc having surgery) down at Newquay and I must say my first impression is very nice. Reminds me a little of the Gold Coast but is not over commercialised. Very nice apartments, restaurants and cafes. Will be swarming with people in summer!
Have to say in tays' first aerial pic over looking Tel$tra Dome it's almost like looking at two completely different worlds. You've got the nice looking apartments, etc., on the right and then bang, vacant land with what looks like containers sitting around. Not a good look!

I think you mentioned this a while back? As a totally public transport person (well except for my tractor) I agree, but I suspect the problem is the underpass beneath the railway lines: which is bad enough at the best of times. Also Wurnundjeri Way/Dudley Street is the poor man's route to the western suburbs ...
There used to be a cable tram running up Spencer st. North of Latrobe (don't ask me to quote my sources tonight!) ... running this trammway up Dudley and along Spencer would have been good for "West Melbourne" but, like I said there's that underpass.

Is anything going to be built on the western side of the podium. It doesn't appear so at the moment but are there any plans to. If nothing is built there it seems like it would create a rather large gap between conder and the closest of the four existing towers, it just leaves an empty feeling that is just asking to be filled
And what is the construction status of that aquivista office building, and where is it located?
Another question, what is happening to New Quay on the western side of waterfront city. I have seen the renders from a few years back showing the annonymous towers, but have there been any plans made for that area yet?
The photos from www.melbournephotos.net so thanks to dandaman
Grollo September 21st, 2004, 07:33 AM There will be a 100m tower built on the vacant site to the west of Conder eventually. It will be an office, hotel or mixture of both, MAB just need a tenant or a hotel operator to sign on and it will get built.
Aquavista is just a proposal at this stage.
I don't think we will see the western half of NewQuay start construction for at least 5 years, most likely it will have 4 75m high towers and 1 100m tower.
Aussie Steve September 21st, 2004, 08:07 AM Going on that photo above, I still don't see any works undertaken for the tram line extension. :(

So is this proposed tower going to be built on the same podium as conder (similar to YE2 and YE3)? Either way a 100m tower would be an awsome addition to New Quay. The great thing about condor is it breaks with the design of the current four (three of which are extremely similar) making the area seem more...natrual. Oh, and what is the planned height of condor, and the height of the current four?
Bronteboy September 28th, 2004, 03:25 PM okay, this is going to sound like a plug, because artist James Davis is an
old pal of mine: for those who know their art, the magazine
'Art Visionaries' once likened his work to Hieronymous Bosch,
but after exhibitions in Berlin and elsewhere Jim's dark visions of the
urban landscape have been concentrated on Fitzroy, Collingwood
and Richmond for many years, and are represented in the National
Gallery and many important collections.
His latest exhibition opened at Gallery NewQuay tonight and runs
until Oct 17. Its his second exhibition there, and the first went
extremely well. The paintings are big, not cheap, but always challenging and
very much worth dropping in for a look if you're down Docklands way.
(not sure how this painting will reproduce here. photobucket
took about five minutes to upload it. here goes...)

for those of you public tansport nuts, and i know there are a few, docklands drive tram extension is well underway. the area behind newquay where all the palms are located has been excavated (either side of the palms), not long before the crete that the tracks sit on is poured. new palms have been craned in all the way up to central city studios, so i'm assuming the tracks will follow thereafter

So is this proposed tower going to be built on the same podium as conder (similar to YE2 and YE3)?
The gap between Conder and the other towers appears to be by design, and the top of the low-rise part of the podium is going to be a rooftop garden, according to this render from a recent NewQuay brochure:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v474/mugley/newquayrender.jpg

idle21 October 2nd, 2004, 07:19 AM I know this is a bit off topic but look at how they have depicted digital harbour in the model posted by silvermb, its all highrises. Look at what is there at the moment, a four level building? Sorry that comments off topic, anyway thanks for the answer mugley
Meldon October 3rd, 2004, 04:20 AM Another slightly off topic question, but just where do all of the palm tress come from that they are putting into Docklands (and other places)? Is there a huge palm tree farm somewhere? Or do they just get recycled from other parts of Melbourne? Interstate? Overseas?

Who belongs to all the cars in the background?
If it is construction workers i can understand, but if it is shoppers and NewQuay residents they are going to run into a problem in the near future when new buildings are built here?
If the apartments are allowing their tenants to park there isn't that sending the wrong message?
Aussie Steve November 11th, 2004, 04:46 AM Going by that pic above, it looks like the core has [or will very soon] topped out.
And the cars are parked in a paid parking lot. Maybe its CBD or Docklands staff!
MG2 November 11th, 2004, 04:58 AM The cars in the background are construction workers. When I lived there the place would be full from around 7am to 3pm. By four the parking lot was empty! There is enough parking in the buildings themselves for tenants, it's visitor parking that's a huge problem and sopmething really needs to be done about that.

I have a 1 in 40,000 chance of owning an apartment there. Damn should have bought a couple more tickets. I wouldn't mind the Smart car either.
tayser November 20th, 2005, 04:43 AM meh, I'd take the Hawthorn east joint, sell it and buy something in the city anyhow.... wouldn't you? :)
A r c h i November 20th, 2005, 06:21 AM Yeah either way I'd be happy. I'd probably sell the Conder apartment pay off the the home for the folk's and get a smaller apartment in Conder or wait for Tower VI @ YE.
tayser November 20th, 2005, 07:31 AM  I had a similar idea, I wouldn't be able to afford to maintain that conder place
keep dreaming tays!
comingsoon November 20th, 2005, 10:12 AM How much for a 2BR apartment at Condor?
tayser November 20th, 2005, 10:49 AM 2bed/1bath/1carpark on level 5: $480-495,000 click (http://www.realestate.com.au/cgi-bin/rsearch?a=o&s=vic&c=84428761&tm=1132479737&id=102802824&f=40&p=20&t=res&ty=&snf=ras&ag=&cu=&fmt=&header=)
the RMH apartment is on level 13, but I dunno if it's 2 bed:
Highlights of apartment 1306 include imported timber flooring, reverse cycle heating and cooling, MATV and internet connections, a gorgeous bedroom with harbour views and a walk-in-robe, full bath, fabulous kitchen and a friendly, informal meals and living area. Conder’s luxurious private health club includes heated indoor lap pool, gymnasium, sauna and indoor garden.
they say the prize is valued at $600,000 - it includes one of those mini-cars and a medallion club membership. 'a gorgeous bedroom' I read that as 1 bed only. dunno might be a two bed, might not, but the prices are a bit off (compared to what's on the market anyhow).
Virtual Tour (http://www.rmhhomelottery.com.au/vrtour2.php) - note the lack of internal panos lol - quicktime required.
anyhow Archi, if either of us win it, we have to hold an OzScrapers EXCLUSIVE™ Apartment warming (before we sell it :D).
deal? :)
A r c h i November 20th, 2005, 11:00 AM Deal. (In best Rainman voice) Definately have to hold an Ozscrapers Apartment warming, definately. :D May as well make the most of it before it's sold. And then I'll do the same for the next apartment.
mugley November 20th, 2005, 11:06 AM wow - Condor is such a nice building, so much nicer than it's three ugly (exposed concrete) sisters. We're lucky to have it.She's got four sisters, but maybe you weren't counting Palladio as an ugly one. Palladio probably needs a push-up bra or something to get more attention from the boys, but I think she's kind of hot...

And remember folks, if you're going to get serious about anthropomorphising buildings, always use a Conder. And that's Conder, not Condor.
Just to clear up any confusion, this is a condor...
http://img500.imageshack.us/img500/5521/condor1yv.jpg
... and this is Conder

A r c h i November 20th, 2005, 11:33 AM Nolan's not too bad either. It's the twins that are a bit average kinda like Patti and Selma. :D
tayser November 20th, 2005, 11:51 AM Patti and Selma a 'bit' average?
they're a FAIL archi, a FAIL!

tayser November 28th, 2005, 05:33 AM It could have been great - given some schmick designs. I really like the idea of putting many different uses into one small area - this and the CUB site are better located for access from all around the city anyhow, Flemington Road is a pain in the arse if you a) live East/South and dont want to pay a toll and b) want to PT it to the hospital for visiting or what not.
mugley January 21st, 2006, 06:57 AM Model in the MAB display office.
Nothing really new or special here. Just took the photo for my own reference, but since the sales-monkey chick gave me some "we don't actually allow photographs of the model" attitude, I thought I might as well post it publicly :)

A r c h i February 25th, 2006, 12:13 AM I don't think it can get any bigger than that. It was a fairly small pic that I found here (http://www.sbe.com.au/html/mainpages/projects.html )

Did you see the crane towers going up Sat.
Them big bolts of blue from the sky certainly pulled the brakes on.
A r c h i March 12th, 2006, 02:23 AM I found the Jackson Clement's Burrows proposal for the New Quay pods. They look really scmick in the renders though I'm not too sure about how they would have turned out in built form.

tayser April 14th, 2006, 10:59 AM I'd be surprised if they didn't move - as they want to consolidate.
See Marky Mark's post (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=326816) in ANZ's own thread.

Good to see they are trying to attract more small/medium sized buisness to Docklands. Really who wouldn't prefer to have their offices there rather than some outer suburban office park?
Good to see also that a big 120m+ tower behind Conder is still included in the masterplan.

AUboy April 27th, 2006, 05:07 PM Daily Telegraph:
STILL with Kyles, she will join Graham Kennedy, John Farnham, Dame Nellie Melba and Dame Edna Everage in being plonked on a Hollywood-style walk of fame at Melbourne's Docklands. Their bronze body doubles, that is. Kennedy and Farnham will be the first two sculptures to be unveiled at a gala event this Saturday night.
Lightning~Bolt April 29th, 2006, 09:48 AM hmmm...didnt know they would be doing such a thing, but sounds great! Anyone know where in Docklands these sculptures will be? Waterfront City?
A r c h i April 29th, 2006, 12:19 PM ^Yep somewhere around Waterfront City.
Lightning~Bolt April 29th, 2006, 05:49 PM ah cool, thanks Archibomber, will have to check it out sometime, wonder what type of cermony was being held there tonight?
Lightning~Bolt April 30th, 2006, 01:56 PM Saw it on channel 9 news tonight, looks very very interesting, they are going to create a whole walkway for these bronze statues, which will feature the faces of many australian celebrities, much like in Hollywood, John Farnhem and Grahem Kennedy are there, with others to be added including Nicole Kidman.
Looks like they are turning waterfront city into the TV showcase place of australia, how long before they host the logies down there somehwhere, maybe on of the studios down there.

Muse July 6th, 2006, 09:26 AM Shit! That pic really shows off its huge footprint 'n subsequent floorplate size. Going up pretty fast as its already into the levels with the horizontal and vertical setbacks.
Do we know the net lettable area of it? I imagine somwhere around the 15-17 thou sqm mark. I'm probably right off though.
Melb_Rulz August 8th, 2006, 03:36 AM why is it these buildings look fantastic from the front but behind them are feral?
Grollo August 8th, 2006, 04:33 AM Because a whole row of buildings like Aquavista will be built behind them fronting Docklands Drive.
Tyson August 8th, 2006, 04:41 AM Shit! That pic really shows off its huge footprint 'n subsequent floorplate size. Going up pretty fast as its already into the levels with the horizontal and vertical setbacks.

13,000 according to Colliers Int.
Shumway August 8th, 2006, 05:02 AM Because a whole row of buildings like Aquavista will be built behind them fronting Docklands Drive.
The buildings could really do with a coat of paint behind, regardless of whether buildings will be backing them. On the same note, if these buildings will be built along docklands drive, presumably on the locations of the car parks, what long term plans have been put in for parking? Parking (price mainly) is a real turnoff at the moment to driving down there for a look.
A r c h i August 8th, 2006, 05:12 AM Aquavista's got something like 6 or 7 levels of parking. Plus there's the tramline along Docklands Drive, so hopefully there shouldn't be any problems.
sakor1 August 8th, 2006, 11:12 AM Yeah, 90% of new buildings in and around the CBD these days are being built with podium level car parking.... so I don't think that will be a problem. Plus as mentioned, there is a tram running right along there that connects from SCS so there are good PT links.
Stu
Tyson August 8th, 2006, 11:25 AM Will Aquavista's parking be operated like a public carpark or are the parking spaces intended for exclusive use of the tennants in the offices above? Since it's strata does it mean that the parking spaces are up for sale? or included with each office or something??
