Actually mykonos is Ibiza's little brother (cause of the all-day house-trance-techno parties by famous djs and the chill out cafes with a sunset view)
Add to these a vivid greek styled nightlife, cycladid architecture, traditional and fancy restaurants, tourists from all over the world, countless narrow streets (sokak :D ) were you can easily get lost, and of course fantastic beaches and endless beach parties (You don't know what a beach party is until you go to super paradise beach) and you have Mykonos, a party island which evert year sinks from the people who visit it :D (Last summer it was impossible to find an air ticket between June and August)
And of course mykonos is a heaven for gays (september is their favourite month), the good thing with them it's that they have their own places and hang-outs and they never make any trouble

Panagia Paraportiani, the Church of Our Lady of the Side Gate


This is one of the most known churches of Mykonos. It is unique because almost everyone knows it. It's photo used to be a logo of Mykonos island and also Greece for a long time. You probably have come across a poster of that church at some Greek travel office. The church is one of the most photographed churches of Mykonos. It is a sloping and whitewashed building looking very interesting as time has contributed to the deterioration and damage of its external look, creating a unique building.

As for it's name, the word Paraportiani is an adjective made up of the two Greek words Para = Side and Porta = Gate. It has been called so because the church was built right on the side entrance of the Medieval Castle of Hora town, that is Mykonos' main village. Nevertheless today the castle is not there as many buildings have been built on the place, but just a few remains from the stone walls of the castle can still be seen around the church.

The Castle or Kastro was near the main harbor entrance in the old center of the village. Today you can find the church if you walk to the left of the main harbour after crossing the waterfront full of cafes and taverns. A little further to the left of the church is another well known part of Hora, Little Venice, where Anthony Quinn in the 1978 movie 'The Greek Tycoon' dances sirtaki. But that's another story.

Actually it is the architecture that makes the church very interesting because it is an asymmetric building made up of four small other churches on the ground floor and one main church on top of them on the first floor. The four ground level churches are called Aghios Sozontas, Aghii Anargyri, Aghia Anastasia, and Aghios Efstathios. On top of the main church there is a small dome like roof. The upper part is reached by an exterior stone staircase on the east side.

The church has been built gradually on a very long time, starting around the middle of the 15th century and on. So these small churches bring together the four different architectural styles: Byzantine, vernacular, traditional and western style. The interior of the church is not important but still it is small, colorful and beautiful.

So when you go to Mykonos do not miss this unique and lovely small church!

I went to Ibiza this summer and I loved it. I heard Mykonos has as similar vibe but it's cheaper. Is the party scene still strong in early september?

There is a lot of wonderful islands in Greece. Mykonos is the most famous (for nightlife and the beaches).

I had my best time in my life here in summer 2009 :)

They are many far more beautiful islands than Mykonos, in Cyclades alone. Since wild parties with vague boundaries are not my thing, I'll pass. Good for them the coastguard hasn't a Vice Squad yet, or the entire Scandinavian population would have migrated to Greek prisons

Και απἰστευτο φαγητὀ ἐχει η Μὐκονος, και πανἐμορφα χωριἀ, και διατἠρησε την παραδοσιακή αρχιτεκτονικἠ της, και φοβερὀ αερἀκι το οποἰο δημιουργεἰ το ιδανικὀ κλἰμα, και φοβερἠ νυχτερινἠ ζωἠ, και την κατἀλληλη μορφολογἰα για να χἀνεσαι σε αμἐτρητους κολπἰσκους και καταπληκτικἀ νερἀ...Τὀ μὀνο μειὀν για κἀποιους, που για'μενα εἰναι θετικὀτατο, εἰναι η κρὐα θἀλασσα και η υφἠ της ἀμμου σε αρκετἀ σημεἰα. Πρὀσθεσε αρχαιολογικὀ χὠρο Δήλου, και εγγὐτητα σε ἀλλα νησιἀ των Κυκλἀδων π.χ. μπορεἰ ο επισκἐπτης να κἀνει μια βὀλτα στην πανἐμορφη Ερμοὐπολη, και ὀπως λἐμε στα Νἐα Ελληνικά we have a winner...

^^Το μείον είναι ότι δεν υπάρχει καθόλου πράσινο.

Στη Μύκονο πήγα δυο φορές, και τις δυο με φοιτητική εκδρομή το Μάιο. Για μένα κύριο μειονέκτημα του νησιού είναι το "λαιφσταιλ" του, αυτή η κοσμικότητα του νεοελληνικού καρακιτσαριού. Αν με ένα μαγικό τρόπο το παραβλέψεις αυτό, απομένουν πανέμορφες παραλίες και η ωραιότερη Κυκλαδίτικη χώρα (την Ερμούπολη δεν τη βάζω λόγω διαφορετικού αρχιτεκτονικού στιλ, και η πολύ όμορφη Άνδρος είναι πολύ μικρή και σχεδόν αποκλειστικά αποτελούμενη από αρχοντικά. Η Μύκονος είναι πιο ολοκληρωμένη, πιο αυθεντική στην κυκλαδίτικη παράδοση και πολύ μεγαλύτερη. Και πανέμορφη). Άρα δεν είναι υπερτιμημένη, έχει την φήμη που έχει με το σπαθί της. Δυστυχώς η αισθητική του Star Channel της κάνει κατ εμέ μεγάλη ζημιά. Αν παει κανείς όμως σε λιγότερο τουριστική περίοδο αυτό είναι λιγότερο έντονο.

Εννοεί προφανώς οτί είναι υπερεκτιμημένο λόγω της κοσμικότητάς του και της διασημότητάς του παγκοσμίως. Δεν αμφιβάλλω οτί κατέχει όλα αυτά τα (υπέροχα κατά τα άλλα) πράγματα σαν νησί αλλά τα ίδια μπορείς να τα βρείς σε δεκάδες άλλα νησιά. Η αρχιτεκτονική πχ είναι τυπική Καυκλαδίτικη. Όσο για τις παραλίες, ποιός προτιμάει super paradise από ελαφονήσι (δεν είμαι Κρητικός)? Πέραν της κοσμικότητάς του δεν βρίσκω άλλο λόγω να με κεντρίσει σαν νησί περισσότερο από άλλα :)
