It looks pretty impressive for a relativly small city! but still a bit common...

Most of the other towers are in the 70-90m range, just the City hall, the huge black building on the right is 106m tall.

There is a proposal for a "Ruhr Tower", 250m+ tall, but we in the German forum consider it dead.

They are of course very boxy – but old! Those were built during the 60s...

Looks and feels really bad in person, and had expected much more from such a big city, main city of the Ruhr urban area, about 8 million people (give or take a couple of million people depending who you ask). It does have some highrises, but still dominated by the stuff of the sixties.

the skyline is really not very great. and it really looks like boxes. but the thing i hate at most is that all of this highrise buildings are just grey, grey, grey. also the new buildings behind the central station.....

but i live here and i like this city. ok, no old great architecture , no beautiful highrises but a wonderful landscape in the south of the city. and... i love the christmas market of course ;-)

I find Essen to be a fascinating city. Its very different to other German cities and feels like a true modern workhouse.
