That one in the photo is an autopista. They resemble the US Interstate Highway system or the German Autobahn. Extremely safe and very nice. Many feature rest areas and SOS phones every km or so. Most Autopistas are toll roads though. Many are very very expensive like one autopista to Cancun has some fares for autos that are around USD$20. It is the old "libre" or free roads that usually are not in very good condition. Also, many federal highways have an autopista and the libre running parallel to each other.

If you are a tourist and want to get to your destination fast, autopistas are the way to go. But If you want to see some "real" Mexico, then take the libres with the topes (speedbumps) and catch all the small towns on the way.

Mexico is a very neat place to drive. I have driven along the Gulf probably over 20 times and never get sick of the views. I have also ventured into the heart of Mexico and onto the Pacific coast and the views are breathtaking.
