Hey guys, saw there was no mazandaran thread so i decided to create one :D As it is currently one of Irans favourite tourist destinations... i.e. Tehranis weekend dumping ground, it deserves some attention. Climatic conditions of Mazandaran have prevented the preservation of historical monuments. Thus there are only a few sound vestiges remaining from pre-Islamic periods in the coastal plains of Mazandaran. But the province is known to have been populated from early antiquity, and Mazandaran has changed hands among various dynasties from early in its history. There are several fortresses remaining from Parthian and Sassanid times, and many older cemeteries scattered throughout the province.

In the year 651CE, during the caliphate of Uthman ibn Affan, S'ad Ibn Abi Waqqas, the governor of Kufa, first conquered the coasts of Tabarestan. For the next two hundred years, Tabaristan maintained an existence independent of the Umayyad Caliphate which supplanted the Persian Empire in the early seventh century, but was temporarily absorbed into the Abbasid Caliphate until a separate state in the same territory broke loose as the Alavid Emirate, under a descendant of Ali, and protected by the neighbouring Saffarid Emirate to the southeast. A similarly-situated state arose as the Ziyarid Emirate a century later.

During the Abbasid caliphate of Abou Jafar Al-Mansur, Tabarestan witnessed a wave of popular revolt. Ultimately, Vandad Hormoz established an independent dynasty in Tabarestan in 783CE. In 1034CE, Soltan Mahmoud Ghaznavi entered Tabarestan via Gorgan followed by the invasion of Soltan Mohammad Kharazmshah in 1209CE. Thereafter, the Mongols governed the region and finally were overthrown by the Timurid Dynasty.

After the dissolution of the feudal government of Tabarestan, Mazandaran was incorporated into modern Persian Empire by Shah Abbas I in 1596.

During the reign of Nadir Shah, the province was used as a front to confront Imperial Russia.

Protected Areas of the Province


This province is the habitat of different species of flora and fauna and very important from environmental and ecological points of view. There are several protected areas under the supervision of the Department of the Environment. The protected areas of the province are as follows:

Jahan-Nema Wildlife Refuge in the east of Mazandaran holding recreational, scientific, and research importance,

Miankaleh Wildlife Refuge with the area of 7,000 hectares registered as Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO,

Semeskandeh Wildlife Refuge with an area of 1,000 hectares,

Dasht-e-Naaz Wildlife Refuge with an area of 55 hectares and the center of breeding Iranian follow dear,

Dodangeh and Chardangeh Protected Areas with the area of 6,000 hectares.

Pleasant and specific climatic and geographic conditions as well as abundance of different water bodies, especially Ab-bandans (Man made ecosystems or water reservoirs) totally have caused Mazandaran province to attact annually a huge number of endemic and migratory birds. These birds are pray birds, flamingo, waders, pelican, partridge, turtledove, grouse, ringdove, vulture, owl, dull-yellow partridge, ortolan, spoonbill, kingfisher, pingeon, heron, goose, crane, duck, eagle starling and…

Locating in the vicinity of the Caspian Sea or the largest land-locked water body in the world, water resources of Mazandaran province hold diverse species of aquatic life which are very important from commercial and industrial points of view. Fishing plays a very important role in the subsistence of people. The most important fishes of the region are: sturgeon, whitefish, salmon, Cyprinidae, Percidae (zander), anchovy, pike, trout, and … Other important wildlife of the region which mostly live in the protected areas of the province are: wild goat, brown bear, hyena, wild boar, fox, porcupine, rat, rabbit, leopard, buck, weasel, wildcat, badger, and …

Mazandaran enjoys its local brand of wrestling called Koshti Loocho. Many of Iran's modern wrestlers come from this province. These competitions are held in July every year, when the paddy farmers have more free times. Several prizes, like sheep and backrests, are given to the winners. This year the competition, were held in the village of Espahi Kola (near Amol city).

Nice wrestling pics.....Iran always has one of the top wrestling teams in the world. I remember watching them against the U.S. here in George Mason U and it was great. They won almost every match.

Into the Caspian fog

This file contains photos taken on a road that goes from the town of Baladeh in the Central Alborz Mountains of northern Iran to the coastal town of Royan/Alamdeh on the Caspian Sea coast (on a straight line, the distance between Baladeh and the Caspian Sea is 42 Km). The town of Baladeh sits at an elevation of 2050 m at the bottom of the Noor River Valley which runs east-west and is a major tributary of the Haraz River.

Noor Valley starts in the west at the 3170 m Labashm Pass and heads east down to an elevation of 700 m where it joins the Haraz River Valley. The bulk of the high peaks of the Central Alborz sit to the south of Noor Valley. To the north of the valley, you will find a 100 Km long ridgeline that goes from the Haraz Valley to the east, to the Chalus Valley to the west. Most of the peaks of this ridgeline have elevations in the 3300-3500 m range, except on the far west where the elevations exceed 3600 m and culminate in the 4030 m Veravasht Peak.

From Baladeh, the road makes a long series of switchbacks going up slopes that are covered by yellow grass to reach the 2970 m Tash Pass which sits between the 3365 m Felook Peak to the east and the 3435 m Siah Sang Peak to the west. From Tash Pass, you can look south to see some of the 4000 m peaks of Central Alborz. To the north, you will find yourself standing above the clouds from the Caspian Sea. The road then turns and twists going down the slopes into the Galand Rood River Valley where you will encounter the Into the Caspian fog that start at elevations of 2000-2400m and continue all the way onto the coastal plain.

I agree with this.But professional 5 star hotels.not the iranian playmobil art.
Real classy hotels.whats wrong with that.Nature is 4 human beeings to enjoy.why not one great hotel instead of plenty ugly villas.
