One of the most spectacular bridges in the entire world! Simply seeing it up close is a breathtaking event, and Sydney is an even more spectacular city for having such a world reknowned and beautiful historic landmark! Works perfectly on postcards also (esp with the Opera House) ;)

nOchAos May 8th, 2006, 06:06 AM A magnificent bridge framing a one of the most beautiful harbours in the world. 74 years old, 137 metres tall, 53000 tonnes of steel, six million hand driven rivets, still the worlds largest steel arch bridge after all this time.
A true icon of the bridge world, it has 8 lanes of traffic, 2 railway lines, one pedestrian crossing, one cycle crossing.
A very wide bridge at 49 metres.
Length of arch span 509 metres
Total length of bridge 1149 metres - thats over 1.1 km
Weight of arch 39000 tonnes
272000 litres of paint required to paint it.

When you look at it, it doesn't really seem like just a bridge. It seems like a monument.
Muse January 24th, 2007, 07:24 PM Yes, monumental is the word. I love the art-deco pylons and it is an engineering marvel.
9.5

Brisbaner21 July 17th, 2007, 04:13 AM Its one of the main things Australia is known for. Its deserves a 10 no doubt.
Kelsen July 17th, 2007, 04:15 AM 9/10.
Gary_A_Hill August 17th, 2007, 06:00 AM I gave it 8.5. It can't get a 10 from me because it is derivative, from the much earlier Hell Gate Bridge in New York City, USA. That's why it looks like a railroad bridge. On the other hand, it improves on Hell Gate, so deserves a respectable score. The most important improvement is that it dispenses with the trick used in Hell Gate of extending the upper chord of the arch into the masonry towers to make it appear anchored (which it is not). The Sydney bridge is structurally honest. It shows that the load is carried by the lower chord to the piers, and that the upper chord and truss are used mainly for stiffening, and transmit their loads to the lower chord. Additionally, the masonry is cleaner, more modern, which I prefer, so it deserves a good rating.
Brendan August 18th, 2007, 11:29 AM The bay and the opera are beautiful! But the bridge itself... i dont know. 6/10
Um, it was built in 1932.
erbse August 18th, 2007, 03:01 PM ^ Well, does that fact make it lookin better? :colgate:

Erektion May 20th, 2008, 07:48 AM Here are two pics from my recent trip there. I took them with my phone camera so not exactly perfect photography. I think the bridge is stunning in its environment.

Dimethyltryptamine January 1st, 2010, 12:16 PM I think that anyone who rates it below an 8, really needs to see it in real life. In photos it looks small but when standing near it, or on it, it's absolutely monolithic.

Last year, the harbour bridge was closed and covered in grass. A lottery was run with the winners getting the chance to have a picnic on the bridge. They even had cows there to let 'nature take over the city'.

It's really hard to find pictures that give you a feeling of the sheer size of the Harbour Bridge! While it may not be the largest bridge in the world, when you're there, underneath it, it feels as though it could be.
