shugs January 10th, 2006, 07:12 PM When it hits the weekend Tehranis hit the streets and head to recreational areas in tehran, or cause massive traffic jams in uptown tehran ;) One of the most popular parks is Park e Mellat, specially when it snows :D heres some info from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mellat_Park
Mellat Park (Pārk-e Mellat) is a famous park in the capital city of Iran.
Known as the Shahanshahi Park (Imperial park) prior to the revolution of 1979, it is one of the largest recreation areas of the Iranian capital Tehran. It is a well-kept and beautiful green area at the foot of the Alborz mountains adjacent to the famous Valiasr Avenue in the east, extending to the Parkway(chamran)& Seoul Street to the west. This park (one of c. 800 parks in Tehran) lies south of the Tehran International Trade Fair grounds and Enghelab golf resorts. Mellat Park Tehran provides pathways for walking and shade for picnics and relaxation. It has facilities such as a lake with boats for rent, skating lanes, snackbars and coffee shops and a small area with birds in cages. There is a horseracing club adjacent to the park and horseracing meetings are held at the Mellat Park. The park has become a popular meeting place for young people and a picknick area for the families. Around the park are some popular coffee shops, fast-food outlets, shopping malls and designer boutiques. Mellat park is watered by the winter-snow streams coming down from Mt. Tochal close to 4,000 m high.

shugs January 10th, 2006, 08:33 PM Park-e Jamshidieh: source http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamshidieh_Park
Jamshidieh Park (or Jamshidieh Stone Garden), established in memorial of Jamshid Davallu Qajar, a Qajar Prince that dedicated this garden to Farah Diba, Empress of Iran. The park, which is located in the Niavaran district at the base of the Kolakchal Mountain, is one of the most picturesque and beautiful parks in Tehran. There are numerous restaurants, traditional teahouses (houses of culture which represent the diversity of Iran's ethnic and tribal heritage), picnic areas, and hiking trails from the lower area of the park all the way up to the top of the mountain.

shugs January 25th, 2006, 02:21 AM Darband: one of the places to be on a thursday night in tehran, good place to be seen ;) hang around watch ppl passing by in a coffe shop, or go for an amazing meal at one of the amazing restaurants. I remember that Darband about 10 years ago when i fist went there was quite delapodated, about 5 years ago it was revamped by local businesses to bring in more ppl for R&R.... one of tehrans hotspots both night and day :D
INFO FROM WIKIPEDIA: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darband_%28Tehran%29
Darband is a former village, now a neighborhood inside Tehran's city limits. It is the beginning of a very popular hiking trail into the Alborz mountain Toochal, which towers over Tehran.
The Persian word (دربند Darband) meaning "closed gates".
Darband is where many Iranian giants of art and culture such as Iraj Mirza, Mohammad Taghi Bahar, Forough Farrokhzad, Abolhasan Saba, Ruhollah Khaleghi, Rahi Moayeri, and Darvish-khan are buried (Zahiro Dowle Monastery).
Darband has a suitable climate all year round, and sees heavy snowfall every year.
The initial start of the trail at Darband is about 250 metres long and is dotted with a number of small cafes and restaurants. These are quite popular and are busy in the evenings.

Description
Since the 1950s, rapid population growth in Tehran has created huge pressure for land on which to build, resulting in the destruction of many of the public and private gardens that once graced the city. As part of a wider range of measures to limit urban sprawl, Tehran Municipality has supported efforts to protect the natural environment of the Alborz Mountains that form the city's northern perimeter. During the late 1970s, a 12-hectare park - Jamshidieh Stone Garden - was created at the foot of the mountains. It proved to be highly popular, and in 1992 the municipality commissioned the park's architects - Baft-e-Shahr Consulting Architects and Urban Planners - to prepare a wider study for the outlying areas north of Tehran. The first part of the study to be implemented was a 30-hectare park, Bagh-e-Ferdowsi, set in a series of steep, south-facing gullies scattered with loose rocks and boulders. To assess the site's potential, the design team camped there for a month, and their design emerged, to a large extent, from the natural topography.
The primary intervention is a series of stone-paved paths and steps that rise up the hill, providing views over the city. Along these paths, areas for sitting, refreshment and entertainment have been created within the natural topography, including four cultural houses built to represent the distinctive styles of Iran's Azeri, Kurdish, Turkmen and Zagros ethnic groups. The paths ultimately lead to a sculpture garden being developed to the east and to hiking trails into the upper valleys.
The routes explore a number of themes, both cultural and natural. The entry point is a paved open space dominated by a statue of Ferdowsi (940-c 1020), the Iranian epic poet after whom the park is named. From this space, a wide stepped pathway forms a "cascade passage", which branches into a network of routes across the site, bordered by a variety of indigenous plants chosen for their form, colour and suitability to the environment. Between the paved paths, copses of trees have been planted to provide shade and colour during the changing seasons.
The primary material is rough-hewn stone, collected from the site or quarried from higher up the mountain ridge. Retaining walls and terraces have been constructed in undulating patterns according to the size and shape of the stones, minimizing cutting, and many large boulders have been made into focal points for spaces along the routes. In a number of places, outcroppings of rock have been imaginatively sculpted into forms such as fish, lizards and bears, creating an environment where respect for nature can be playfully developed among the young.
In the design of the four cultural houses, traditional materials and forms reflect the way of life of the groups represented. Red stone was brought in from Azerbaijan for the Azeri house; the Zagros house takes the form of an open-sided nomadic tent; while the Turkmen cultural house comprises a series of circular spaces with distinctive domed roofs, derived from traditional yurts.
Water is one of the main organizing elements in traditional gardens. With no natural source of water available on the site, the designers ingeniously created water channels that lead from drinking fountains in the public spaces. Lighting is another important aspect of the design, with all of the principal paths to the summit illuminated by pole-mounted lights. The distinctive patterns made by the lights against the slopes of the Alborz Mountains are now a landmark for the city below.
The project, which was completed in 1997, enjoys great popularity and has had a direct and positive impact on the city, alleviating pressure for development on the slopes of the Alborz Mountains and creating an environment where people, nature and culture thrive. An imaginative reinterpretation of the traditional Persian "paradise" garden adapted to modern needs, Bagh-e-Ferdowsi pays testimony to the importance of environmental design within the overall process of urban development.
Jury Citation
This project has been chosen for its innovative approach to environmental design, which limits urban development and promotes an awareness of conservation and nature amongst the urban population of Tehran. As a setting for outdoor recreational and cultural pursuits, the park provides spaces for contemplation, family recreation and social interaction, and for the appreciation of local culture and entertainment. Imaginative use of materials, playful sculptures and indigenous landscaping draw on the best traditions of garden design in the region. In an age of global consumer culture, with the spread of stifling and homogeneous urban forms, this "nature-urban" public park constitutes a refreshing and welcome change.

Omid_Sultani July 23rd, 2007, 03:47 PM The Bagh-e Behesht Restaurant is one of my favorite restaurants I've been into in Tehran. A summernight is the best time to visit it. It's so romantic.
I've searched so much after some parks, but I haven't found much at all. Park-e Eram & Park-e Chitgar are some splendid parks I've been into when I was in Tehran, and it's almost strange it's so little about these on the net. Have any of you been visiting it? Next time I go, I will take pics of those places. But I also want to thank shugs taking all of his time posting all these pics! :D

Omid_Sultani December 21st, 2007, 01:16 AM ^^ Agreed.
Parks of Tehran are really ba salighe. The newer ones like Chitgar are OK really, but the ones from Pahlavi's period are very special. They are so delicious, look like British Parks a bit. Don't you agree, those park are truly beautiful?
noonghandi October 9th, 2008, 11:59 AM I love Laleh Park (Farrah). I grew up a couple of blocks north of this park. And I spent my summers at the Sazemaneh Ab pool, across the street from Laleh Park.
I even remember when they had shahr bazi and the Russian Circus at this park.
my grandmother ( khoda biamorzatesh ) would take us to the show every once in a while.
I walked by the park to go to my high school, Marjan (Lalehay Enghelab) everyday. My high school was located on block north of forooshgah korosh on Pahlavi street and we had lunch at Mc Ali burger shop at Meidan Aryamher somedays and went to Forooshgah Korosh self service on the 10th. floor and had chelo kabab koobideh and a soda for 55 rials.

alitezar October 9th, 2008, 07:16 PM I love Laleh Park (Farrah).
I walked by the park to go to my high school, Marjan (Lalehay Enghelab) everyday. wow soo cool, I wish I could see pix of Tehran during the Shah time. I have heard that most people were very stylish and chic :)
I don't mean that they are not today but with the stupid dress code it's harder.

my sister went to lale haye enghelab high school.. this year they began to destroy the building.
i used to live very close to forooshgah ghods (koorosh) when i lived in iran. but since 2006 they have closed the forooshgah and the building is empty, i don,t know why.
i lived in behjat abad apartment and i also have some pics from laleh park which are from 70s 2007 and 2008.
those from 70s are taken by my grandfather, I am just 19 years old!
but i will post them as soon as i can.
shugs October 10th, 2008, 03:02 AM ^The Basijis took over foroshga qods, screwed up the management and it went bust/closed down. It's a shame I used to go there all the time, awesome department store. :(

Iran was unbelievable at that time. People went to Europe for vacation all the time and mixed European style with Persian taste to create the best of both worlds.
I have a million pictures of all over Iran, especially a lot of beach pictures with family and friends in bikinis. You won't believe it but people walked in their swim suits on the streets of shomal cities.
At Motel Ghoo they had disco nights by the peer and boys and girls would dance in their skimpy clothes all night.
It is like an unbelievable dream to me. There is nothing like it in the world because Iranians are culturally different and all the fun was very clean and friendly.
noonghandi October 10th, 2008, 10:42 AM on JADEH KENAREH, that's what they called a road that connected all the small towns very close to the beach, there were bars and discos every few kilometers.
noonghandi October 10th, 2008, 10:43 AM There were Las Vegas style slot machines at the beach.

It is really a shame. I loved shopping there. The underground grocery shop had the best Swiss and Belgian chocolate very cheap.

I know, it is really funny. It was Ali's way of fighting Mc Donalds. There were 2 Mc Donalds in Tehran at the time.

Shapoor February 22nd, 2009, 05:18 PM I think it's somewhere in West Tehran around Chitgar. I've never heard about the garden before.
