Nanjing means "southern capital" in Chinese, of course Beijing means "northern capital". It's a 2000-year old city, and was the capital of Republic of China (ROC) before 1949. It is about 7th or 8th largest city in Mainland China now.

I think in the future, Shanghai and Nanjing will end up as one big megalopolis!
