Though Ipoh importance as Tin centre has basically declined. It's still an exciting big town. The old world charm is still largely there. Have U guys noticed how cool Ipoh looks during the night, especially around the Stesen Keretapi and the various surrounding Padang with the city centre in background. Hope somebody could post more pix of Ipoh...esp at night argory January 13th, 2006, 02:21 AM Hi Jeeshyan! Great collection... really enjoyed looking at them. Shows the glory of old (and new) Ipoh. :) One concern though, the IJ convent looks better kept in 2004 than 2005... maybe it's just the picture, but hope it's still being preserved. ;) From the old picture, its seems that the main buiding of St. Michael's Inst was extended over time...true? aen January 13th, 2006, 10:05 AM wow...good work jeesyhan !! i'm was born and bred an ipoh boy..and till today i still thinks it's the best place to be. aen January 13th, 2006, 10:12 AM that's right argory .... SMI was built through fundings from public's donations and st. micheal's church... the land was donated by the state i think. hence the slow progress before it could take its shape today. u can always pay a visit to the school - the whole school is actually a gallery by itself (if they're still there) - telling its own history. AFL January 13th, 2006, 03:01 PM WOW, this is truly amazing...Ipoh really has beautiful buildings all over the city...historical and colonial :eek2: :eek2: TYW January 13th, 2006, 03:56 PM interesting pics, there. i like to see then and now pics :D jeeshyan January 15th, 2006, 11:32 AM hahah... okok... Frankly, I have not 'really' been to Ipoh in many many years and the only building I remember downtown Ipoh is this. Sadly it is not restored and it is demolished as I think this is a very very nice landmark if preserved. Just look at the 1961 pictures and it tells. Instead of some Kedai Runcit maybe some modern cafes and pubs could open in its place. Since it is so recognisable, maybe a mini police station or a tourist info ctr could be opened there. Perhaps we could see something more exciting in its place or if not then the sacrificial of this wonderful landmark would be in vain :( Why I said 'really' is because the most recent trip to Ipoh for me is in 2002 and I only went to Kinta Parade :D Other than that, I happened to be there also once in 1994 to some cave temples (forgot which one liao) :D Perhaps the next time I go Penang, I shall do a stopover in Ipoh if only some Ipoh-mali-people can bring me around  GREAT pictures jeeshyan! :okay: jeeshyan June 8th, 2006, 12:24 PM Frankly, I have not 'really' been to Ipoh in many many years and the only building I remember downtown Ipoh is this. Ipoh's White Coffee is the most famous one! jeeshyan February 17th, 2008, 11:30 AM Ipoh History The name Ipoh is said to have come from a local tree, pohon epu, which is now more commonly known as pokok ipoh. This plant produces a poisonous sap that is used by the orang asli for their blowdarts. Ipoh is also known as san seng in Chinese, which means "hill city" in the Cantonese. This probably refers to the many limestone outcrops around the city. An old nickname for Ipoh is City of Millionaires, referring to the vast fortunes made during the days of the tin and rubber industry. Being in the rich tin-bearing Kinta Valley, Ipoh was a boom town in the 1920s and 30s. When the price of tin collapsed in the 1950s, it resulted in the closure of many Ipoh tin mines, stagnating the growth of the town, and propelled its population to seek employment in other parts of Malaysia. Ipoh has a reputation of being one of the cleanest cities. It is also well known for its clear water supply, which allows it to be a choice producer of vegetables, especially bean sprouts. Ipoh Cuisine Ipoh is famous among the people of Malaysia for its food. Ipoh people claim that their water supply, which is relatively hard (high alkali content) owing to Ipoh's location on top of a large karstic formation, makes the food especially tasty. Ipoh is particularly famous for its "Sar Hor Fun", a flat white rice noodle taken with shredded chickehn meat and prawns. Folks from other towns often stop over in Ipoh to enjoy the dim sum if they arrive in the morning, and the nga choi kai, a dish of chicken and bean sprouts, if they come in the evening. Ipoh's Hakka Mee and yong tau fee is also popular. Heritage Ipoh Ipoh, like many major towns in Malaysia, has its share of heritage buildings. Unfortunately, a good number of them are today in a run-down state. Some, like the Pasar Bulat, is no longer standing, although it continues to appear on guidebooks (something which AsiaExplorers, being a web-based information provider, am able to update immediately). As I continue to write and document about the buildings and sights in Ipoh - as I do about the rest of Asia - I hope that this effort will generate into greater awareness and appreciation for these beautiful buildings, and that more effort will be invested to conserve them. |
