Since I really like Ipoh, and somebody has already posted the Old Ipoh pictures.
These are some pix of a forgotten city. [I'll try to find somemore Ipoh pix at dusk.]

Ipoh might not have many big, tall buildings like modern Penang or JB.
But, aren't these cool!

New bus terminal for Ipoh

By CHRISTINA KOH

A TWO-HECTARE piece of land in Bandar Meru Raya has been identified for Ipoh’s permanent bus terminal.

Datuk Bandar Datuk Hasan Nawawi Abd Rahman said the terminal should be operational by 2015, the year when Perak was expected to attain developed status.

He said the new and modern terminal in Meru Raya was necessary to prevent congestion in the city.

Most bus companies are now operating from Medan Gopeng in the city after having relocated from the Medan Kidd station in October 2004.

“Meru Raya is expected to see tremendous growth with hotels and commercial centres coming up in the area.

“The state is applying for MSC status there.

“The location is also ideal for express buses because it is near the North-South Express-way Jelapang toll plaza,” Hasan Nawawi told reporters after the city council’s full board meeting in Ipoh on Wednesday.

On another matter, he said the council was looking at a few proposals from several companies to recycle waste produced by residents in the city.

He said fees proposed by the companies to recycle waste ranged from RM25 to RM35 per tonne, adding that Ipoh produced 600 tonnes of wastes per day.

“This would come to about RM18,000 a day or RM540,000 per month at RM30 per tonne which is quite costly,” Hasan Nawawi said.

He said he would prefer proposals which did not require any fees to be paid.

IPOH, Feb 8 (Bernama) -- The state government will focus on three aspects of development under the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP) to ensure Perak becomes a developed state by 2015.

They are raising the per capita income of the people, eradicating poverty and housing for squatters.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli Ghazali said all state exco members and department heads would meet on March 5 and 6 to discuss the development under the 9MP.

A total of 23 working papers would be discussed during the conference, he said after chairing a state exco meeting, here Wednesday.

Among the measures to be taken in poverty eradication would be to hold cross checking between agencies and head counts.

The district offices will be asked to gather data and take pictures of the houses of the hardcore poor to prevent duplication of aid, he said.

He said the state government would hold Perak Fair in Medan for four days from Feb 24 to introduce state products to Indonesia.

Among the products would be medication, education, housing and hotels.

"Two MoU would be signed on medication and education," he said.

The state is expected to receive more people from Medan looking for these services when Air Asia started a direct flight from Ipoh to Medan beginning from March 1, he said.

Mayor: Good to plant fruit trees along roads
Wednesday March 1, 2006

FRUIT trees may be planted along roads within the Ipoh city limits to help green the area and “enrich the environment.”

Agreeing with a suggestion from city councillor T. Murugiah, Ipoh Datuk Bandar Datuk Hasan Nawawi Abdul Rahman said planting fruit trees along roads in Ipoh would be good for the environment.

“We can harvest the fruits or allow the public or birds to eat them,” he said when replying to points raised at the Ipoh City Council full board meeting yesterday.

Hasan Nawawi noted that planting fruit trees would also result in more oxygen being released into the environment.

He said the council would discuss ways on how the suggestion could be implemented, adding that the council needed to plant trees with fruits which the people and animals like to eat.

Earlier, Murugiah said he was fascinated with the way fruit trees were planted along roads at Nanning in China’s Guangxi province.

He said the roads there not only have flowering trees but also fruit trees which were harvested and sold.

Murugiah also proposed that the council set up a unit to help attract investors to Ipoh.

He said the city had a lot of empty industrial lots which could be sold to in-vestors.

Later, Hasan Nawawi blessed one of the council's 13 new rubbish compactors during a ceremony.

The council recently took delivery of the compactors which cost about RM2.99mil.

The council has a fleet of 54 rubbish compactors of which 60% are over 12 years old.

Hasan Nawawi said the new compactors were better because the cost of maintaining them was lower.

Airport runway extension to cost RM28m
Wednesday March 1, 2006
Report by HAH FOONG LIAN

IT will cost RM28mil to ex-tend the runway of the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport in Ipoh to accommodate the Airbus aircraft.

Ipoh Datuk Bandar Datuk Hasan Nawawi Abdul Rahman said he was informed of the cost by Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali.

He said Tajol Rosli told him that an initial study showed that the cost of extending the runway and land compensation would come to RM28mil.

Hasan Nawawi said the state government was serious about the project as it wanted to turn the Ipoh airport into an international one.

He said the state government had asked for an allocation for the project under the Ninth Malaysia Plan, failing which it would come up with its own funds to extend the runway.

Hasan Nawawi said the present 700m-long runway, which can accommodate the Boeing 737, needed to be extended by another 400m to accommodate the Airbus.

He also said direct flights between Guangzhou in China and Ipoh might be introduced next year.

On another matter, he said 500 students from Nanning in China’s Guangxi province were expected to come to a private college here in June to learn English.

“In our recent visit to Nanning, its mayor Lin Guoqiang was interested to have an education tie-up with Ipoh.

“The mayor is keen to have Nanning students studying here because Ipoh is a Cantonese-speaking city like Nanning,” Hasan Nawawi said after chairing the Ipoh City Council full board meeting yesterday.

He said Lin also noted that the cost of living in Ipoh was cheaper and that the city was safe.

Call to upgrade port and airport
Wednesday March 1, 2006

PERAK needs to upgrade its Lumut Port and Sultan Azlan Shah Airport to make the state more attractive to foreign investors.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Moha-mad Tajol Rosli Ghazali said the need to upgrade the two ports was voiced out to him by investors from Taipei.

The investors, he said, also hoped that the Ipoh Lumut road could be upgraded.

“They also hope to see if we can improve on our delivery system.

“We are looking into all the re-quests as our objective is to ensure Perak is really attractive to the foreign investors,” he told reporters af-ter receiving a courtesy call from newly appointed Taipei Investors’ Association in Malaysia president Datuk Dr Ting Chung Cheng at his office in Ipoh recently.

Also present were Taipei Inves-tors’ Association in Malaysia Perak Branch chairman Huan Liang Chi (right) and Perak MCA chairman Da-tuk Ong Ka Chuan.

Tajol Rosli said Taipei remained to be one of the state highest investments, having a total of 50 companies set up in Perak so far.

The latest investment it received from Taiwan, he said, was the setting up of a factory producing frui-tose in Sungkai.

The factory, built with an investment worth RM112mil, was scheduled to be in operational in Septem-ber, he said.

He said more investments were expected to come following his meeting with Taiwanese businessmen during a trade mission in June.

“During the trip, we are targeting companies involved in the biodiesel industry to invest in Perak,” he added.

PREVENTING DENGUE FEVER:Fogging being
carried out at the central market.

THE Housing and Local Government Ministry has allocated RM2.9mil to spruce up the central market in Ipoh.

Announcing this, state executive councillor Datuk Tan Cheng Meng said Perak MCA chief Datuk Ong Ka Chuan received the good news two days ago.

“Work will start this year,” he said, adding that refurbishment work was expected to be completed within the year.

Tan, who is state Health, Science and Environment Committee chairman, was speaking to reporters after a fogging exercise at the market recently.

”The Ipoh City Council has been entrusted to carry out the project,” he noted.

The state government, he said, also agreed that the market should not be relocated.

“If the market is relocated, the city will be dead,” he said.

On the fogging, Tan said: “Six of the 15 dengue victims in Ipoh are traders at the market.”

Ipoh society to restore temple

BY SYLVIA LOOI

IPOH: A 100-year-old temple, which was almost swallowed by the jungle, will be restored.

This is the aim of the Ipoh Benevolent Society which unearthed the temple after it was “lost” for 32 years.

According to association adviser Lye Pak Weng, the Da Xiong Bao Dian temple was discovered last year when the society was building a second Amitabha Liberating Pond at the site near the Kuan Yin Tong temple at Jalan Raja Dr Nazrin Shah (previously Jalan Gopeng).

ALL INTACT: The interior of the temple that was unearthed by the Ipoh Benevolent Society when it was in the midst of constructing a pond. --Starpix by SAIFUL BAHRI
The pond is built for devotees to release fish, a common religious practice.

“When we went inside the temple with the Perak Heritage Society, we found that the walls and facade were all intact.

“Based on the architecture, we estimate that the temple is over a century old,” he told reporters after the visit of State Urban and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Chang Ko Youn yesterday.

Lye said they would be working with the Perak Heritage Society to determine the temple’s origins and how it was built.

He said the Ipoh Benevolent Society planned to remove the earth covering the temple and turn it into a tourist attraction.

CURIOUS PASSER-BY: A member of the public checking out the temple which was discovered near the Kuan Yin Tong temple at Jalan Raja Dr Nazrin Shah in Ipoh.
“We will need about RM200,000 for the clean-up exercise,” he added.

Meanwhile, Chang urged devotees who had previously prayed at the temple or the temple’s committee members to come forward and assist the society.

“I will also ask officers from the Perak Geological Department to check the stability of the site,” he said.

Those interested in helping the society can contact Lye at 016-545 2370.

Since AirAsia want to fly Airbus to Ipoh, it is time to let this airport extend.

Air Asia will be using A320 which is designed to carry the same amount of passengers as the B737. Therefore, the runway extension is not warranted. It is only warranted for other Airbus aircraft such as A330 or A340 and Ipoh will not see scheduled services by these aircraft anyway as MAS is already unable to fill up their B737 for their fights to Ipoh. I think it is more beneficial to built a high speed train line between Ipoh and KLIA

You are right. only one flight a day on that route and MAS cant even sustain it. They incurred losses for that route and will withdraw pretty soon i think. The problem is not whether the runway should be extended, it's whether the airport should be closed down or not as an airport that handles one commercial flight a day is not economically viable

Government To Revive Double Tracking Project ?

By Alan Ting

KUALA LUMPUR, March 29 (Bernama) -- The government is expected to revive the multi-billion ringgit double-tracking project for the northern sector in the next few years after it has been deferred in 2003.

The revival of the project has been accepted by the government and was given priority for implementation.

"It has been approved and expected to be announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi soon," a transport industry source told Bernama, Wednesday.

He said the project was part of the master plan to develop the northern region to be the regional hub for the halal food processing centre and there was a need for an efficient rail link for the transportation of products.

"The other consideration for the revival of the project is that the existing double tracking project between Rawang and Ipoh is near completion. Therefore, it is only logical that we extend it," he said, adding the existing single track has limited capacity.

The Ipoh-Rawang stretch costing RM4.6 billion is 82 per cent completed and will be ready in 2007.

"The existing single track has to be shared along with the passenger's train as well as cargo train movements. The frequencies cannot be increased unless you have double track," he said.

In April last year, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said the ministry has forwarded a proposal to revive the double tracking project -- mainly covering the northern portion and not the whole double tracking project as proposed earlier.

He was quoted as saying on April 25 last year that a major portion of the budget allocation for transportation under the Ninth Malaysia Plan would go towards the development of the railways.

In December 2003, the government announced the deferment of the RM14.5 billion electrified double-tracking project, which was earlier jointly awarded to Malaysia Mining Corporation Bhd and Gamuda Bhd.

The deferment affected the northern stretch from Ipoh to Padang Besar and the southern sector from Seremban to Johor Baharu.

On paper, population in Ipoh is higher than JB. I don't know how many of those have not changed their IC addresses if they are already work outside Ipoh :) . Nonetheless, Ipoh is quite big and it has high population of Chinese (around 75%) and most of them are cantonese. Hence IPH-Guangzhou may be viable for low cost airliner. For JB, it may be too close to Singapore.

Upset over project on green lung
Saturday August 12, 2006

RESIDENTS of Taman Tasek Jaya in Ipoh are upset that their football field has been taken over for the expansion of a surau.

“Without informing us, they bulldozed the trees on the field and started work last week,” said Kooi Nam Sung who led 30 residents to hand over a memorandum on the matter to Datuk Bandar Datuk Mohamad Rafiai Moktar last Tuesday.

The memorandum was received by a council employee.

Kooi, a spokesman for the residents, said they were not against the project but it should not take up the entire field.

Kooi, 54, who has been staying at the housing estate for 30 years, said residents had started a signature campaign to appeal to the state to reconsider.

Ipoh Barat MP M. Kulasegaran, who was also present, questioned the state’s approval of the project because the field was the residents' green lung.

“This is not the first time that open spaces in the city here are being taken over by buildings,” he said, citing Taman Risah in First Garden and Taman Kledang in Jalan Silibin which had been taken over to build a petrol station and supermarket respectively.

State Urban and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Chang Ko Youn said he would look into the matter.

“We want to give our Ipoh customers the Starbucks experience by creating a space for them to relax with their favourite book or meet up with friends for a good cup of coffee,” he said.

To celebrate the opening, every 10th customer was presented with exclusive Starbucks Coffee premium merchandise.

Those who spent above RM18 were rewarded with an exclusive Starbucks Coffee ceramic mug.

Free samples of the refreshing Java Chip Frappuccino Blended Coffee were also served during the event.

Quays said the Starbucks Frap-puccino blended coffee beverages were popular and would “certainly be well accepted in Ipoh.”

Ipoh doesn't have many high rise buildings. Despite being 3rd largest city in Malaysia, the city doesn't look big and most of the high rise building are about 10 storey high, am quite surprised. Of coz a city doesn't have to have skyscrapers, but all the while I expect Ipoh to look something like Kuching or Melaka if not JB and Penang, until I visited the city.
I like Ipoh anyway especially the old and charming buildings coz I think they are pretty unique. I like the cleanliness as well. Kudos to the city council for keeping the city clean.Hah, will make a visit again coz i have many friends in Ipoh.

Ipoh airport able to handle crises
Tuesday August 22, 2006
By CLARA CHOOI
TheStar

THE Sultan Azlan Shah Air-port in Ipoh is ready to handle crises such as airplane crashes, said its manager Mahmud Fauzi Kadir.

“Save for several minor glit-ches in our emergency plan, I can confidently say we are ready to handle any disaster,” he said after presiding over a full-scale emergency drill at the airport in Ipoh recently.

The priority in all emergency situations, added Mahmud Fau-zi, was the casualties.

“If a plane crashes, the most important thing is whether the passengers are alive or in critical condition,” he said.

The Royal Malaysian Police, Fire and Rescue, and Public De-fence departments (JPA3), St John Ambulance, Red Crescent Society and Airport Health, Na-tional Security Council were among the agencies which would rush to people’s aid in such emergencies.

“The airport authorities will set up the crash site scene consisting of the red, yellow and green zones and monitor movement of the rescue personnel.

“The zones determine which authority is allowed to enter where. It is to smoothen the rescue flow,” he said.

He added, however, that those involved in the drill should have taken things more seriously.

“If this were really an emergency situation, people would be running around, not taking strolls.

“We need these drills to re-flect the real thing because you never know when disaster may strike,” he said.

In the drill involving some 300 people, a Boeing 737-300 from Bangkok carrying 25 passengers and five crewmembers had to make an emergency lan-ding after its first engine fai- led.

After its call of a ‘Full Emer-gency Imminent Crash’ reached the airport’s Air Traffic Control unit (PKTU), directives were sent out to the police, ambulance unit, hospital, the Airport Fire and Rescue and other agencies.

Within 15 minutes of the call, the mock plane crashed and burst into flames on the runway as it was still carrying enough fuel for another 90 mi-nutes.

Firemen then put out the flames while the ambulance proceeded to tag victims into critical, semi-critical, non-cri-tical and dead categories du-ring the one-hour rescue operation.

Mahmud Fauzi said the drill was in compliance with re-quirements by the Internatio-nal Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) for all airports in Malaysia to conduct full-scale crash exercises once every two years.

“Next, we are hoping to conduct drills for hostage situations or bomb threats,” he said.

Plan to set up ring roads

By CHRISTINA KOH

TRAFFIC within the city area in Ipoh will be smoother after the Perak Government completes ongoing projects to establish and link inner, middle and outer ring roads.

State Urban and Local Go-vernment Committee chairman Datuk Chang Ko Youn said the state has already identified the roads that would allow motorists to avoid the city centre, hence reducing congestion.

He cited roads like Jalan Bendahara and Jalan Leong Boon Swee as inner ring roads, while outer ring roads included the Ipoh-Lumut highway and Jalan Tasek.

However, he said, the state was working to connect certain areas such as Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah Selatan to Jalan Lahat.

“For instance, a motorist from Jalan Pasir Puteh who wants to travel to Falim or Menglembu could instead use the Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah Selatan way.

“At the moment, we are looking for the funds to link Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah Selatan up to Jalan Lahat.

“The cost is quite high because of the bridge there,” he said after giving away 2,000 flags to taxi drivers at the Medan Gopeng terminal in Ipoh recently.

Chang said the setting up of the ring roads was part of Perak’s efforts to improve the traffic system.

It was one way to solve the massive congestion caused by rush hour traffic at certain roads in the city where premier schools were located.

According to the Ipoh Structural Plan, such schools should be relocated outside the city to ease the congestion.

“But the state government received many protests from parents and school authorities, so we have decided not to move them unless the school authorities plan to relocate.

“Then we will help them relocate,” he said, adding that the state would establish the ring roads in stages.

Among the schools in the city centre that saw major congestion were SM Sam Tet, SM Ave Maria Convent, St Michael’s Institution, SM Convent and SM Perempuan Methodist (MGS).

Ipoh’s movie makeover

By CHAN LI LEEN

IPOH: The transformation of a row of dilapidated pre-war buildings along Jalan Chung On Siew here into a World War II street scene of Shanghai is drawing crowds of film fans and curious onlookers.

For the past few days, motorists would slow down to watch workers labouring on the set of the latest movie by Oscar-winning Taiwanese director Ang Lee, Lust, Caution.

The workers have put up prop signboards, installed street lamps of bygone days and have even constructed a replica of a double-decker tram for use during the filming.

The Taiwanese-born director, who won a Best Director Oscar earlier this year for Brokeback Mountain, was expected to shoot his spy thriller in parts of the city from tomorrow.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2006/9/5/nation/n_29tram.jpg
SHANGHAI SETTING: A replica of a double-decker tram rests in front of a row of shophouses in Jalan Chung On Siew as workers put up street lamps to depict a scene of war-time Shanghai.
Filming is also set to take place at Jalan Bandar Timah, Jalan Panglima, Jalan Tun Sambanthan, Jalan Chua Cheng Bok, Jalan Che Wan, Jalan Sultan Yusuf, Jalan Dato’ Maharajalela and Jalan Pasar here.

Based on a 26-page short story by famed Chinese writer Eileen Chang, Lust, Caution will star Cannes best actor winner Tony Leung, Chinese-American pop star Wang Lee-Hom and mainland newcomer Tang Wei.

The story revolves around a group of patriotic students who plot to assassinate an intelligence chief in the Japan-backed Chinese government during World War II.

Leung plays the intelligence officer while Wang and Tang portray the students.

I think this could be the temple a few kilometers out of silibin area...There is a secret waterfall behind the temple (a longg walk thru the jungle to get there) and if you climb to the top (after the long walk) the path is blocked by 3 tridents...We were too scared to continue walking...My grandmas friend said that it is a hindu holy place and we were not pure enough to enter or something like that...When I go back to Malaysia next month I will check it out again!

PS. I really think buildings in Ipoh need re rendering and a nice coat of paint...The building styles are very nice but they look so rundown!!

PPS. My mistake, it is not the same temple.
Also, has anyone got a picture of the Mcdonalds in the city center? They did that cuilding up soo nicely :)

13-12-2006: UEM World to complete Rawang-Ipoh project for RM766.97m
By Gan Yen Kuan
Email us your feedback at fd@bizedge.com

The Rawang-Ipoh electrified double track rail project is back on track after UEM World Bhd received government approval to undertake the project for a contract sum of RM766.97 million.

UEM World said on Dec 13 the government had accepted its offer to complete the project and a formal contract would be executed soon.

The contract would involve the construction, completion, testing, commissioning and maintenance of the railway track.

“The period of the contract is for 22 months, commencing from June 1, 2005 to March 31, 2007,” it said, adding more details of the contract would be made available upon announcement of the execution of the contract.

UEM World added it intended to novate the contract to its 57.1% subsidiary UEM Builders Bhd upon the execution of the contract.

UEM Builders’ unit, UEM Construction Sdn Bhd, had been undertaking the works for the double track rail project on an interim basis since its appointment by the government on June 1, 2005.

UEM Construction took over the multi-billion ringgit project, which was 88% completed by former main contractor DRB-Hicom Bhd.

DRB-Hicom had pulled out of the contract after being owed by the government for dues on work already done as well as RM700 million in variation orders.

UEM World and UEM Builders share prices closed two sen higher to RM1.71 and RM1.39, respectively. DRB-Hicom was unchanged at RM1.58.

Perak is to attain developed status by 2015 right? But Kedah's Vision 2010 shows that Kedah will attain developed status 5 years earlier than Perak. From what I see, Perak is far more developed than Kedah (correct me if i'm wrong) This is only my opinion, no mean to offend my friends, Kedahan. Somehow, Kedah is developing fast for the past few years especially in industrial sector, and it is possible Kedah will catch up Perak but not within these 4 years

Perak to push on with runway extension plan
Sunday December 17, 2006
TheStar

LUMUT: Perak will continue with its plans to extend the runway at the under-used Sultan Azlan Shah Airport next year.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali said the extension would allow larger aircraft like the Airbus A320 to land in Ipoh.

He said a local consultant had estimated that it would cost RM40mil to extend the runway to make it 1,981m long.

Declining to give a timeframe when the runway will be ready, Tajol Rosli said: “We have to do it quickly, and we have to acquire the land needed for it.”

Tajol Rosli said this yesterday after launching the new manufacturing facility of Impsa (M) Sdn Bhd, a leading manufacturer of ship-to-shore and rubber-tyre gantry cranes, here yesterday.

In September, it was reported that low-cost airline AirAsia was forced to suspend its popular Ipoh-Senai flights.

The airline had quoted the short runway at the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport as one of the reasons for suspending its four weekly flights.

On a related matter, Tajol Rosli said the Transport Ministry had given its approval for airlines to operate from the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport to Bangkok, Haadyai, Phuket, Jakarta and Kota Kinabalu, but not to Singapore.

This, he said, was because negotiations with the island republic were still ongoing.

MANJUNG: With or without federal funding, Perak will go ahead with extending the landing strip of its airport in Ipoh.

"We have asked the federal government for money, but since it’s a necessity, we’ll do it — as long as the federal government allows flights in and out of the airport," said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli Ghazali.

He said the 2km airstrip would be lengthened by more than 400m to enable planes the size of an A320 Airbus to land.

The RM40 million project would entail some acquisition of private land, but is a scaled-down version of a RM151 million proposal, that included extending the terminal and shifting the fire station at the Sultan Azlan Shah airport.

He also said the airstrip’s ideal length would be 2.2km and with the other components included, would cost RM158 million.

Tajol Rosli met Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy on Wednesday and obtained the ministry’s approval for flights to and from the airport, except those involving Singapore.

"We can fly from Ipoh to Bangkok, Hat Yai, Phuket, Jakarta, Labuan or Sabah," he said at the launch of Impsa Malaysia Sdn Bhd’s new manufacturing plant for ship-to-shore cranes and hydropower turbines and generators.

Tajol also said there might be a pipeline linking an oil refinery in Kedah to Kelantan, passing through Lumut and Grik. He hoped Manjung would become a hub for industries related to marine, oil and gas, and biofuels.

all this developed status thing should not be taken seriously. Penang is supposed to achieve "developed status" in 2010 also, at the same time as Kedah. I believe Penang is more than 20 years ahead of Kedah in terms of development. besides that, Penang is so much more developed than many so called "cities" all around Malaysia but it is still in municipal level. clearly, this "status" is just to satisfy certain people.

One-stop auto centre for Ipoh
Wednesday January 31, 2007
TheStar

IPOH: Bandar Meru Raya, a new township that is being developed as Perak’s Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) hub, will soon become a centre for the motor vehicle retail trade.

Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali said a 5ha site at the township had been allocated to build Ipoh Auto City, which would bring dealers and operators in the motor vehicle business under one roof.

He said the centre located along the North-South Expressway near Jelapang here would become a major crowd puller, hence boosting economic activities.

The project between PCB Development and LS Associates Sdn Bhd would be the second in the country after a similar centre in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, he said.

Speaking after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two companies at the Perak Techno Trade Centre here on Monday, Tajol Rosli said a car museum for vintage cars would also be built there.

The cars, belonging to royalty and VIPs, would also be available for rent on special occasions, he said.

“We hope Ipoh Auto City will become one of the must-visit stopovers for those travelling along the highway,” he added.

Tajol Rosli said other development plans in the pipeline was a “Shoes City” with the relocation of 400 shoemakers in Menglembu to the township.

“A huge food court complex selling Ipoh’s best food will also be built there,” he said.

LS Associates chairman Tan Sri Adzmi Wahab said Ipoh Auto City could accommodate dealers for all the 35 brands of cars available in the country, and it would include showroom space for second-hand cars.

Other facilities to be made available are insurance and finance services, car accessories stores, workshops, and counters for Road Transport Department and Puspakom to process the transactions.

“Once operational, one will not need to travel to different locations or be caught in traffic to check on choices and prices of car,” he said, adding that the centre would be completed in August next year.

IPOH: Integrated resort township Sunway City Ipoh, a joint venture between Sunway City Bhd (SunCity) and the Perak government, is poised to receive another RM700mil investment over the next seven to 10 years.

During this period, 2,000 medium- and high-end residential units would be added to the existing 962 units, said SunCity senior general manager Ong Pang Yen.

“The new units will be a mixture of landed properties and high-rise apartments and condominiums,” he told StarBiz.

Ong said plans also included over 100 units of “innovative commercial properties” and a RM30mil entertainment zone that would capitalise on the success of the newly opened Rum Jungle at the Lost World of Tambun theme park.

“A major development already taking place is a world-class hot spring spa and resort that will put Sunway City Ipoh on the international tourism map.
“It will have spa treatment rooms, hot spring pools at different temperatures, food and beverage outlets, as well as 25 chalets,” he said, noting that the first phase would cost RM70mil.

Ong revealed that Koreans and Japanese would make up the bulk of potential buyers of properties in Sunway City Ipoh.

“Many who have visited the township are excited at the prospect of residing here under the Malaysia My Second Home programme.

“What excites them most, besides the natural beauty and serenity of the site, is the Tambun Hot Springs,” he said.

Spanning 520ha in Tambun, the project has reached a gross development value of almost RM500mil since it was revived in 2002, according to Ong.

Sunway City Ipoh will launch its latest cluster bungalows, Lakeside Homes, today. The bungalows are priced from RM422,000 and the first eight buyers will get an ang pow worth RM23,000 each.

PERAK TOURISM HUB

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f173/adiyon84/perakhead.jpg

Although Ipoh is strategically located midway between Penang and KL along the North-South Expressway, it is often bypassed by both northbound and south bound travelers opting for the convenience of the designated rest and service areas for their journey breaks.

Even those outstation folks who yearn for a taste of the famous Ngah Choi Kai (bean sprouts chicken) are hesitant to leave the highway to traverse the network of the one-way street system, which only comes with ease to locals and those familiar with the inner city. Need to buy chicken biscuits for the family back home.

Getting the best means taking Exit 135 and detouring to Kampar, where the ‘original’ kai chai peang are demanded by those with discerning taste buds.

These little inconveniences of getting the best of Perak will soon be a thing of the past with the launching of a one-stop resource centre at the capital city.

Known as the Perak Tourism Hub, this commercial complex will showcase what Perak State has to offer, all in a single location. With the first phase projected to be completed by mid-2009, the Perak Tourism Hub has the endorsement of the Perak State Government to not only bring together the resources to improve the tourism industry in this region but also to invigorate development towards a more progressive state.

As a source centre, the Perak Tourism Hub will be a place where both foreign tourists and Malaysians can get basic information on the many tourist places in Perak. State-of-the-art information booths equipped with interactive maps, itinerary planners, resource directory, video and audio presentations will not only provide locations of the best recreational and eating spots, the helpful behind-the counter assistants will also be able to get you there.

Route maps for those who choose to drive on their own or bookings of transportation services to the selected venues may also be arranged on the spot, thanks to the centralized information network. You may also book accommodations or check availability for not only five-star hotels but also small motels and inns throughout the state. Food outlets and retail shops for local products at this one-stop centre also eliminate the need to drive around the state in search of the best white-coffee to go with your tambun biscuits or kaya-and-buttered toast. They all come to you… here in one strategic location.

Only a mere three-minute drive from the South Ipoh Exit, the Perak Tourism Hub marks its strategic spot with its 18-storey four towers looming skyward from its five-level 475,000 sq feet base.

As the landmark building in Ipoh, the Perak Tourism Hub will also be equipped with the latest IT, telecommunication, internet WiFi ready and security facilities, making it the most comprehensive and premier venue for both business and recreational purposes. Large banquet, exhibition and conference halls, meeting rooms and business centre are just some of the other facilities provided together with gyms, spas and health centre.

The four towers will also house the 1st and only all-suite service apartments in Ipoh by providing accommodation facilities for conference guests, business travelers or just any visitors from out of town. Emerald Capital will be entering into Hospitality services as well.

Ipoh dijangka miliki hotel baru RM80 juta

Gugusan Manjoi bakal perkampungan moden

New Ipoh Auto City coming up near Ipoh
BY MAZNI MUSTAFA

IPOH: Bandar Meru Raya, a new township that is now being developed as Perak's Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) hub, will soon become a centre for automotive retail trade as well.

Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali said a 5ha site at the township has been alienated to build Ipoh Auto City, which would bring dealers and operators in the auto business under one-roof.

He said the centre located along the North-South Expressway near Jelapang here would become a major 'crowd puller', hence boosting economic activities at the new township.

The project between PCB Development and LS Associates (SEA) Sdn Bhd was the second in the country after the one in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, he said.
Speaking after witnessing the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the two companies at the Perak Techno Trade Centre here on Monday, Tajol Rosli said a car museum for vintage cars would also be built there.

The vintage cars, belonging to royalty and VIPs, would also be put up for rent for use on special occasions, he said.

"We hope Ipoh Auto City will become one of the must-visit stopovers for those travelling along the highway," he added.

Tajol Rosli said other development plans in the pipeline was a 'Shoes City' with the relocating of 400 shoemakers in Menglembu to the township.
"A huge food court complex selling all kinds of Ipoh's best food will also be built there," he said.

Another project would be a wholesale outlet similar to the Nilai 3 in Negeri Sembilan, he said.

LS Associates chairman Tan Sri Adzmi Wahab said the Ipoh Auto City could accommodate dealers for all the 35 brands of cars available in the country, adding that it would include showroom space for second hand cars.

Other facilities to be made available are insurance and finance services, car accessories stores, workshops, and counters for Road Transport Department (JPJ) and Puspakom to process the transactions, he said.

"Once operational, one does not need to travel to different locations and be caught up in traffic to check on choices and prices of the cars.

"The facilities we provide at the centre will certainly help to complete all car sales transaction quickly, easily and efficiently, be it first or second hand," said Adzmi. He added the centre would be completed in August next year.

KARS buka cawangan di Ipoh

LS ASSOCIATES (SEA) Sdn Bhd akan membuka pusat jualan kereta mega keduanya, KARS di Ipoh atas tapak 12 hektar bersebelahan laluan lebuh Raya Utara-Selatan dan Plaza Tol Jelapang, di Bandar Meru Raya.

http://avn.innity.com/avnvw.php?camp...1152&n=3822357

Ia disaksikan Menteri Besar Perak, Datuk Seri Mohd Tajol Rosli Ghazali.

RM700 juta lagi bangun Lost World Of Tambun
Oleh: ABDUL RAZAK DIN

IPOH 21 Feb. – Sunway City (Ipoh) Sdn. Bhd.

Cliffs that are a joy to conquer

By CLARA CHOOI

SWINGING from a thick vine like Tarzan, it was barely minutes before one of the world’s best rock climbers, 16-year-old David Lama conquered the famous ‘Needle of Tambun’ limestone cliff in Ipoh, Perak.

Modern day Tarzan: The nimble Austrian Lama, 16, swinging from a thick vine dangling off the ‘Needle of Tambun’ limestone cliff.
The fastened bolts on the rock were hardly a necessity for the pint-sized Lama, who made the climb look as effortless as walking up a flight of stairs.

In reality, the unique 80m high rock formation sandwiched between two limestone hills at the Lost World of Tambun water park is a tricky climb because of its slippery limestone surface.

To the Austrian Lama and five other world's top climbers who arrived in Malaysia last week to film a documentary, Perak’s beautiful limestone hills were not only joy to climb but also to look at.

The other five climbers are Belgian Cedric Lachat, 22, Swiss Christina Schmid, 17, German Juliane Wurm, 16, and Austrians Anna Stohr, 18, and Katharina Saurwein, 19.

Cliffhanger: The agile Belgian Lachat scaling one of the most dangerous limestone formations at the Lost World of Tambun in Ipoh.
The documentary, a joint effort between Malaysia’s Camp5 rock-climbing gym and Mammut, a Swiss rock-climbing equipment brand, will feature the team climbing some of the 400 million-year-old hills in Perak and Perlis.

“Malaysia is blessed with all these beautiful hills and all these unique rock formations.

“Once explored, they can be made accessible to tourists interested in climbing,” said Camp5 managing director Patrick Andrey, who suggested to the crew to choose Malaysia as the film location.

He was speaking to reporters during a climbing demonstration to the media and Ipoh Datuk Bandar Datuk Mohamad Rafiai Moktar recently.

Andrey said that although many of the hills were potential climbing destinations, some might not be easily accessed.

He urged the Malaysian Government to develop the areas and turn rock-climbing into a tourism product.

“I have seen many beautiful hills before but to have rocks collectively like this is very special,” said Andrey, who had developed ‘Nyamuk’, the only climbing site in Batu Caves.

He added that this being Visit Malaysia Year, the government should consider pooling efforts into environmental tourism, instead of building more and more hotels.

“Those who come here, come here for its natural surroundings. We don’t need fancy hotels to enjoy that,” said Andrey.

Lost World of Tambun general manager Calvin Ho said that the team had already bolted 50 routes along the many limestone hills located within the water park area and the sites would soon be opened to the public for rock climbing.

Ipoh's White Coffee, A Temptation Hard To Resist

DELICIOUS… The white coffee in Malaysia is synonymous with Ipoh and even made its way into the online encyclopedia Wikipedia. Pix: Roshidi Abu Samah

By Roshidi Abu Samah

IPOH, Feb 21 (Bernama) -- The white coffee in Malaysia is synonymous with Ipoh and even made its way into the online encyclopedia Wikipedia.

Ipoh's white coffee is a favourite indulgence for coffee lovers since the heydays of tin mining activities in Perak.

The beverage was introduced in the 19th century by Chinese migrants who came to work in the tin mines.

A MISNOMER

However, the name is a misnomer as the beverage's colour is just like any other coffee that Malaysians are used to and it's neither cappuccino.

Wikipedia mentions that in English-speaking countries, white coffee refers to ordinary coffee added with milk, creamer or other whitening substance.

The name presumably originates in Ipoh's Old Town where the coffee beans are roasted. The coffee beans are traditionally roasted using margarine, caramel and added with ground fibre from oats or wheat but the white coffee is roasted using margarine only.

The end product is roasted bean that is lighter in colour and with its own taste and intense aroma. Hence, it takes its name from the colour of the roasted bean.

The coffee beans used for producing the white coffee are from the Arabica and Robusta types, the same beans used to make the other types of coffee but some coffee producers add Liberica beans to provide a bitter tang.

TIPS TO MAKE THAT PERFECT CUPPA AT HOME

It's not difficult to make a perfect cup of white coffee at home but the trick is finding the right ratio between the water and coffee powder, and the amount of milk and creamer.

The art of arriving at the right taste entails some experimenting but coffee lovers can opt for a shortcut by visiting www.ipohwhitecoffee2u.com.my.

For a cup (200ml) of tantalising white coffee, you can follow the steps below:

Step 1: Put in two tablespoons (10-15g) of coffee powder into a brewing mug.

Step 2: Pour in the boiling water.

Step 3: Let the coffee brew for 15 minutes.

Step 4: The brew is just right when you see the brownish foam at the top.

Step 5: Filter the brew into a cup until 3/4 full.

Step 6: Add two teaspoons of condensed milk and mix.

Step 7: Add evaporated milk until the right taste is achieved.

Step 8: Mix well before serving.

IPOH WHITE COFFEE EVOLVES WITH TIME

All this while, coffee lovers from all over the nation had to come to Ipoh to enjoy a hot cuppa or a cold glass of white coffee.

But technological advancement has helped to bring the white coffee right to your home as it is now available in instant sachets and all you need to do is just add hot water and enjoy the delight.

Ipoh's white coffee has made its way to Singapore, the Philippines, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and United States.

Instant white coffee brands like Old Town and Chek Hup are now easily available on the mini market and supermarket shelves.

FRESHLY BREWED WHITE COFFEE

Nevertheless, the instant white coffee may not be able to satisfy the palate of the die-hard fans of Ipoh's white coffee.

So they are most welcomed to this city to savour a cup of freshly brewed white coffee at one of the kopitiam (coffee shops) well known for their white coffee.

They can try it at Sin Yoon Loong Restaurant, Sun Yuan Foong Restaurant and Nam Heong Restaurant, all situated in Jalan Bandar Timah, Ipoh Old Town or the Ipoh Old Town Kopitiam at Jalan Tun Sambathan here.

However, they should take note that both Sin Yoon Loong and Sun Yuan Foong serve the bitter version of the coffee while Nam Heong serves the sweet and milkier version.

It's up to coffee connoisseurs to make their choice. Enjoy your cuppa!

Ipoh's always close to his heart
By Clara Chooi

THE next time you are in the Sunway City Ipoh vicinity and the man next to you bends down to retrieve a piece of rubbish, take note. He may just be the founder and chairman of the entire Sunway Group itself, Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah.

The Ipoh boy said it was his love for the city that drove him to do his best to preserve its beauty.

“Whenever I’m here, I find myself picking up any rubbish I see on the ground. I guess it's because I’ll always hold this city close to my heart,” said Cheah.

The Pusing-born millionaire has big dreams of turning the quiet city into a bustling metropolitan with the completion of his integrated resort township project - the 526ha SunCity in Ipoh.

“Perak was alive during those days when it was rich with tin ore. After that, youths began to leave the city for the capital.

New budget hotel, The Sun Inns has 242 rooms.

“I want to revive the vibrancy that Ipoh used to have and turn it into an attractive place for foreign tourists to live in as their second home,” he said, citing the ‘Malaysia My Second Home’ programme.

As a result, the township recently launched its new 242-room budget hotel located less than a two-minute drive from the Lost World of Tambun water theme park.

Meanwhile, a groundbreaking ceremony was recently held for the RM6mil Extreme Park, an extension of the one in Bandar Sunway.

Scheduled to be completed middle of this year, the 11ha park offers facilities like go-karting, All Terrain Vehicles (ATV) and dirt kart racing, a golf driving range and paintball, futsal and badminton arenas.

An additional RM700mil was expected to be injected in the RM1bil township project, which is a joint venture between the Sunway City Ipoh Sdn Bhd and the state government.

Cheah said future plans at the township included a foreign university branch campus at a 12ha land in Tambun itself.
“That is my long-term dream. Once we acquire the land and I manage to find an appropriate university, we will begin immediately,” he said.

Abandoned project to be turned into city’s signature building

ONCE an eyesore, the 19-storey commercial building project in Jalan Dato Ahmad Said, Ipoh, which was abandoned for the past 10 years, has been revived.

The building, which was initially planned for a hotel, will be converted into an integrated commercial centre by Ipoh Tower Sdn Bhd.

Its director Jeffrey Liew said the project would comprise business suite, corporate offices, office units, service apartments, hotel apartments, penthouses, a club house, a cafe and a swimming pool.

He said that with different types of property built under one roof, the company was confident that it would be a signature building for the city when it was completed in May next year.

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f173/adiyon84/akulagisuka.jpg

Integrated commercial centre:Liew(centre)showing a model of the 19-storey project to two potential buyers.
“It will be the first integrated building in Ipoh,” he told reporters at the launching of its business suite, service apartments, and office units recently.

Liew said the company had targeted RM70mil from the sale of the project.

He said the company was offering the first batch of its office units for as low as RM165 per sq ft, adding that the cheapest unit was priced at RM265 per sq ft then when the project started in 1997.

“We bought the half-completed building for RM10mil from Dana-harta two years ago, which is a huge discount compared to its present market value.

“We are now passing down this saving to our buyers,” added Liew.

Perak to get more tourist police booths

MORE tourist police booths will be built in Perak to help ensure the security of visitors.

Tourism Malaysia's new state director Mohd Izal Mohd Nor said the booths would be built in Sungai Perak, Tapah, Ipoh, Taiping, Kuala Kangsar, Lumut, Pangkalan Hulu and Pangkor.

“We hope to complete the booths this year.

“Tourist police will man the booths to handle inquiries from visitors and help them lodge police reports,” he said during the farewell gathering and handover of duties ceremony for outgoing director Rohaiza Haris in Ipoh recently.

He said the booths would be built with the cooperation of the police.

Mohd Izal said he planned to organise international level events to attract visitors, especially foreign tourists to Perak.

He also said he planned to promote sports tourism as the state had many sports facilities.

Wenzhou investors coming to Perak

TWO trade delegations from the coastal city of Wenzhou, China, are expected to visit Perak next month to scout for business opportunities in Malay-sia.

State Urban and Local Govern-ment Committee chairman Datuk Chang Ko Youn said Perak had a lot to offer Chinese investors in the form of cheaper land, electri-city and water.

“Setting up plants in Perak will also allow Wenzhou entre-preneurs to escape the anti-dumping duties imposed by the European Union on Chinese shoe-makers.

“Wenzhou is a well-known industrial city with many busi- nessmen who became successful through hard work and strategic planning,” he said in Ipoh recently.

Last December, Chang had accompanied a Perak Chinese Assembly Hall delegation led by its chairman Tan Sri Chong Chin Shoong to Wenzhou, Nanjung and Ruian districts.

Ipoh sedia khidmat akses internet percuma

Taman tema Lost World of Tambun untuk keluarga

Jika benar anda berfikir begitu, telahan anda nyata silap.

Anak anda pasti riang bermain air pancut di kolam cetek 慐xplorabay?

Satu lagi keunikan LWOT ialah 慣ambun Hot Springs?

Selamat bercuti!

New stops north of Rawang for KTM

By CHRISTINA LOW

IN less than a month’s time the public would be able to stop at three new railway stations after Rawang.

The three stations are Serendah, Batang Kali and Rasa, which is part of the Rawang-Ipoh double-tracking project which was completed in December last year.

»Most of our railway tracks are more than a century old« DATUK MOHD SALLEH ABDULLAH
At present, KTM commuters have to disembark at the Rawang station and take another train, called the shuttle service, to the three new destinations.

“Infrastructure, track and stations have all been completed but we need another year to complete the signalling, communication and electrification systems,” said KTMB managing director Datuk Mohd Salleh Abdullah.

The three stations are part of the first phase of KTMB’s Rawang-Ipoh double-tracking project before the service is expanded to Tanjung Malim under the next phase soon.

“When we start our services to Tanjung Malim we will have to consider whether to extend the KTM Komuter route from Seremban to Tanjung Malim or to let it remain as it is now,” said Mohd Salleh.

He said KTMB would be able to determine appropriate routes for the stretch once it had been opened to the public.

“When it is in service, we would be able to determine the timetable, routes and the number of services better as we would then be able to know and the demographics of each passenger,” said Mohd Salleh.

From April 21 to May 1, KTMB will be offering free shuttle services from Rawang to Rasa at 30-minute intervals.

From May 2 onwards, commuters will have to pay RM2.70 for a trip from Rawang to Rasa.

“It is a ‘shuttle service’ so it will not interfere with the existing Rawang-Seremban commuter train service,” said Mohd Salleh.

Next year, KTMB hopes to run its third service, which is the Rapid Train Service, which will take commuters from KL Sentral to Ipoh in less than three hours.

It is a different type of service compared to the current Intercity service whereby it will be a classier train with six car set which is double the number of the current KTM Komuter.

The Rapid Service is said to be able to accommodate 350 to 400 passengers per train and is fully air-conditioned. It will also come equipped with a buffet car where passengers would be able to dine on board.

“The service, which will take only two hours and 15 minutes, is set to be marginally pricier,” said Mohd Salleh.

He added that KTMB was confident that the service would be well received by the public.

The Rapid Service will take passengers from the Ipoh railway station right up to KL Sentral with stops at Batu Gajah, Kampar, Tapah Road, Slim River and Tanjung Malim.

Mohd Salleh said the double tracking services were initiated not only because of the growing number of commuters but also to accommodate freight containers and the transportation of cement from the Kinta Valley in Ipoh to the Klang Valley.

“With single track we are only able to run 20 to 25 trains a day but with double tracks we can do 10 times that,” said Salleh who hopes that the services would begin in early 2008.

“We need the double track badly, most of our railway tracks are more than a century old, some tracks need to be raised especially in flood-prone areas,” said Mohd Salleh.

Works for the Ipoh-Padang Besar and Seremban-Johor Bahru double-tracking project was revived last month by the Cabinet Committee on Public Transport.

Work on the Ipoh-Padang Besar stretch will start work soon and would take about two years to complete.

Both the projects were deferred in 2003 in an effort to reduce the country’s budget deficit.

RM15j diperlukan bersih dua sungai

Township taking shape

MANY development activities are taking off at Bandar Meru Raya in Jelapang near Ipoh.

The latest is the RM25mil PITC Hotel which will have 146 rooms, service apartments and a conference room with a 1,400 seating capacity when completed next year.

Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali said the four-star PITC Hotel would be developed by Malacca International Trade Centre (MITC).

“We are glad that MITC has decided to help us bring development to the township,” he said after performing the groundbreaking ceremony for the hotel recently.

Tajol Rosli said many developers had started to tap Bandar Meru Raya’s development potential as the state’s new growth corridor.

He said the biggest investment entry for the township would be the opening of a factory manufacturing liquid crystal display (LCD), a local and foreign venture project costing about RM4bil.

Another big project taking off soon is the Perak Hi-Tech Park which will be built under the Ninth Malaysia Plan, he said.

Besides the active participation of private players, he said the government was also investing in the township.

“There are 22 projects, costing RM300mil, to build government offices and they are at various stages of implementation,” he added. Bandar Meru Raya, which overlooks the scenic mountain range near the Jelapang toll plaza, is expected to become a fully integrated township by 2015.

Meredah gua batu kapur Tambun

Oleh Hafizan Taib

Lost World of Tambun popularkan kawasan alam semula jadi di pinggir Ipoh untuk tarikan pelancong asing

Pengarah Urusan Integrated Aviation Academy, Mejar (B) Mohd.

Mohd. Hanim berkata, selain melatih juruterbang persendirian Malaysia, pihaknya juga melatih juruterbang dari luar negara.

Perak Aims To Attract RM1 Bln Foreign Direct Investment
TANJUNG MALIM, April 7 (Bernama) -- Perak is aiming to attract RM1 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) this year, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali said today.

Last year, the FDI inflow to the state amounted to RM700 million, he said.

"We will be happy if it can touch RM1 billion (in terms of FDI)," Tajol Rosli said after officiating Miyazu Malaysia Sdn Bhd's tooling and dies plant here.

Among others, he added, the state government will offer affordable land for investors to set up their manufacturing plants or businesses.

On another development, Tajol Rosli said if everything goes well, the Perak Hi-Tech Park, which comes under the Ninth Malaysia Plan, will take off in 2008.

The largest investment in the area will be a factory manufacturing liquid crystal display (LCD) costing about RM4 billion, he said.

Ipoh goes one up on Cyberjaya
By Karamjit Singh
Email us your feedback at fd@bizedge.com

It has always been a curious paradox that while Cyberjaya stands for Malaysia's next generation leap into technology as a key pillar of the economy, the city itself lacks certain facilities one takes for granted in a smart city. To start with the most basic, it doesn't offer city-wide wireless broadband access. Mind you, this was brought up way back in 2001 by an International Advisory Panel member.

Cyberja folks can now look at Ipoh with envy as that city has become the first in Malaysia to go wireless. In a smart partnership between the state government, Internet service provider Jaring and The Red Snapper (M) Sdn Bhd (a wireless mobility cell-WiFi company), a plan to turn Perak into a wireless state took a giant step forward late last month with the launch of Wireless Ipoh.

It was no media gimmick, with a WiFi zone in one area and the promise to roll out more. Instead, the city of Ipoh and its suburbs boast 23 access points covering 18 locations. The promoters do not claim the city is fully covered but are confident they have achieved meaningful coverage for Ipoh citizens. This is not only Phase 1 of the Wireless Perak plan that was approved in 2006, but also Perak MSC's (Multimedia Super Corridor) flagship venture. The goal is to cover 70% of the populated areas in the state.

Designated public areas have free Internet access, in this case Padang Ipoh and Seenivasagam Park, while subsidised access will be offered to students and disadvantaged sections of society. Businesses and consumers will be offered reliable and high speed access at competitive rates.

One thing that leaps out at you in this whole plan is the cost. Malaysians, who are generally accustomed to inflated costs when it comes to government projects, may be shocked to find out that Wireless Perak will only cost RM2.46 million. Not that nobody tried to get a sweet deal for themselves. One party is said to have approached the state government to cover only Ipoh with wireless broadband — for a sum of RM56 million.

"The price is low because we are using smart partnerships to move this," says Rais Hussin, executive chairman of Red Snapper. The state government is providing its buildings for free to locate base stations, while Jaring already has a node in Ipoh for its Super Jaring fibre-optic line. In fact, Jaring has allocated 34Mbit of dedicated bandwith for Wireless Ipoh. Red Snapper provides the hardware and does the system integration for a small margin.

And how will Red Snapper make some serious money? Rais says that will come through its enterprise and consumer voice and data solution unit, offering carrier class voice over WiFi. It is also trying to develop its own WiFi-WiMAX compliant chip as Rais says Red Snapper strongly believes that in three years, mobile devices will be WiMAX ready.

But back to Wireless Ipoh, in which broadband coverage is based on micro-cellular technology or extended WiFi.

Jaring CEO Mohamed Awang Lah says they are hoping to grow their revenue with this initiative. "We can offer users dedicated broadband through other technologies too. Right now, this has given us invaluable experience in rolling out a WiFi network. It looks easy to do but believe me, it is not," he says.

What Perak is doing has already caught the attention of neighbouring countries and states, with groups coming in to study what has been done and the model employed. In the US, some municipal authorities think it will give them an edge in attracting investment if they have a city that is wireless-broadband enabled.

Perak, however, is doing it to make a statement that the once tin-rich state is about to mine a different kind of wealth and is starting by giving its people and businesses easy access to broadband.

It is too early to say if this will transform Perak folks into more vibrant, creative people and make businesses based there more competitive. Or whether Jaring will make money from the project and Red Snapper become the preferred partner for wireless cities. But whatever it is, it is the start of something interesting that definitely bears watching.

Significant growth

By CLARA CHOOI

PERAK has experienced significant growth and development in the more than 20 years under the rule of Sultan of Perak Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah.

Today as the Ruler ushers in his 79th birthday, the 34th Sultan can proudly say that he had witnessed the state progress over the years.
Since the decline of the world tin mining industry in the mid 1980s, Perak went through whirlpools of economic changes leading it to what it is today – a state geared towards developed status by 2015.

To reach this goal, a 10-year development model had been drawn up.

The plan – announced by Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali in 2005 – focuses on three issues: abolishing hardcore poverty, achieving zero squatter status, and increasing per capita income of households in the state.

To lay the groundwork, Tajol Rosli had also announced the state’s plan towards achieving a “knowledge-based state” or K-state status by 2010.
Under its Information Communication Technology (ICT) Strategic Blueprint, the two-phase plan centres on three strategic areas; knowledge infrastructure (K-infra), knowledge economy (K-economy) and knowledge society (K-society).

With these, the state hopes to improve its socio-economic standing using ICT as the enabler for the Government, private sector and community.
Also in line with this, at least 80% of Perak is slated to have wireless Internet connection under the Wireless Perak initiative by the middle of this year.

With this, anyone with WiFi (wireless fidelity) enabled laptops, mobile phones or PDAs (personal digital assistant) would be able to connect to the Internet wherever they get a signal – whether at school, in a shopping mall or even a bus stop.

The WiFi facility will cost the state some RM4mil upon completion, which is expected to be by 2008.

As the country moves into its second year of implementation for projects under the 9th Malaysia Plan, Perak has an approved Federal allocation of RM6.19bil for 1,631 new projects.

Under the 9MP, Perak is currently undergoing a series of developments in Bandar Meru Raya in Jelapang near Ipoh for the completion of the Perak Hi-Tech Park by 2015.

The project is an initiative to develop the state’s Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) township which involves 22 projects amounting to RM300mil.

According to Sultan Azlan Shah, the first year of implementation under the 9MP had seen Perak starting 96 of these projects with a total cost of RM553mil.

“I hope that the implementation of these projects are further improved so that every one of them are completed by the end of the 9MP’s five-year period,” he said when opening the fourth session of the 11th state assembly on April 4.

Apart from developing the ICT sector, the global demand for renewable fuel has pushed Perak into taking proactive measures by using its natural resources to produce biofuel.

This can be seen from its plan to set up the country’s first RM1.4bil refinery plant at a 1,000ha area in Trong, which will use wild nipah trees to manufacture ethanol – an alternative to petrol.
The refinery, scheduled to be in operation by early next year, would have the capacity to produce about 1.8 billion litres of ethanol annually, most of which would be exported.

During the plant’s groundbreaking ceremony in January, Tajol Rosli said that the state expected an annual income of RM324mil from the project.
The production of biofuel is not the only technological advancement that Perak plans to delve in.

Where once the state’s soil was used to mine for tin, it may soon be used to mine for water.

Early last year, Tajol Rosli announced that a company had expressed interest to undertake a multi-billion ringgit project to mine for underground water to be supplied to Selangor.

He said that if all went well, the project should begin by 2009 and it was expected to generate an annual revenue of RM36mil.

The state is also tapping the service industry to spur economic growth.
With the current Visit Malaysia Year 2007 campaign, Perak has embarked on a series of initiatives to draw at least three million tourist arrivals in the state this year.

These initiatives include the construction of Tourism Information Complex in Teluk Intan, the launch of the Lumut-Belawan ferry ride in March, the refurbishment of the Pangkor town jetty and the state Tourism Action Council’s offer for travel packages.

The packages provide local and foreign tourists overnight stays at hotels or chalets and trips to places like the Matang mangrove forest, Belum Valley or Pangkor Island, some of the state’s biggest attractions.
The state hopes to gain at least RM1.2bil in revenue this year from its tourism activities.

The revived Ipoh-Padang Besar double-tracking project is another much-awaited facility which could generate more revenue for the state.
The project, which was deferred in 2003 in an effort to reduce the country’s budget deficit, will help in serving as an alternative mode of transport for local commuters and even foreign tourists.

Sultan Azlan Shah had said that he hoped with the completion of the project, there would be an increase in economic activities in the state. With Perak’s future plans for development, it is clear that the state and its people will continue to enjoy the economic progress and a better standard of living.

Sunway City Ipoh In Tie-up To Woo Korean Senior Citizens

IPOH, April 25 (Bernama) -- Sunway City Ipoh Sdn Bhd (SCI) and CI Korea Ltd are joining forces to present Malaysia as an ideal second home for South Korea's senior citizens.

SCI senior general manager Ong Pang Yen said today his company is clearing a 4.4 ha site at Tambun here to build apartments and houses to serve as second homes for South Koreans aged 65 and above.

The project involving about 460 houses is targeted at senior citizens from the town of Hong Cheong, he told a press conference here after signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between SCI and CI Korea at the Ipoh City Hall.

The Korean firm was represented by its vice president, Deok Su Yu. The event was witnessed by Ipoh City Council secretary Roshidi Hashim.

Ong felt the project is viable as it incorporates various recreational facilities that are second only to those in the Klang Valley.

"With the MoU we will work with CI Korea Ltd on a study on how to promote the project," he said. "The study will take about three months before the project development takes off.

"The cooperation between SCI and one of the best-known realty companies in South Korea proves that Sunway City is the best property developer and tourism promoter in this city."

According to Ong, CI Korea has developed Hong Cheong as a town for senior citizens.

He also disclosed that SCI will invest another RM700 million to develop various facilities in this tourist, recreation and residential project.

This is in addition to the RM500 million being spent to develop property, recreational and tourism projects which are due to be completed by 2010.

CI Korea's Deok said his company has bought 602 houses at Sunway in Petaling Jaya for sale to South Koreans, driven by the fact that houses are costly in that country and that about 10 percent of the South Korean population comprises those aged 65 and more.

The buyers of houses at Sunway PJ will be offered four-day three-night free stays at apartments in Sunway Ipoh every month.

He described the housing and other facilities here as more attractive than those in Thailand and the Philippines.

Sunway City Ipoh In Tie-up To Woo Korean Senior Citizens
April 25, 2007 23:55 PM

Ipoh Airport Proposed As Launching Ground For Space Tourism

By Ahmad Shukran Shaharuddin

SEREMBAN, April 29 (Bernama) -- A group of space tourism consultants have proposed to the Perak government to turn the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport (LTSAS) in Ipoh into a "space-bound airport".

Space Future Consulting director Dr Patrick Collins said the proposal was submitted in 1999.

For the plan to become a reality, however, it should start as a ground for test flights.

He said the LTSAS was chosen for the project because of its low airline traffic unlike the KL International Airport in Sepang.

It was also strategically located at the centre of Peninsular Malaysia and supported by a good transportation network, said Dr Collins who was a lecturer with Azabu University's Environmental Policy Department in Japan.

"Although it sounds very ambitious but it can happen. For example 20 years back, not many of us used handphones but it's considered something normal nowadays," he told Bernama here.

He said the initial cost was estimated at RM100 million and this included the plan to conduct 100 test flights using a spacecraft called the Ascender which could carry space tourists, astronauts and facilitate scientific experiments at 100km from earth.

The suborbital spaceplane, developed by Bristol Spaceplanes Limited of Britain, can take off and land horizontally and also climb vertically.

Dr Collins said Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Tajol Rosli Ghazali had on Nov 2004 announced that the state government had allowed the LTSAS to be developed into a port for space tourism.

"This initiative could be undertaken on a joint-venture effort involving a local company. We have also approached the Civil Aviation Department twice on the proposal as we need the licence from them to operate," he said.

He said the government should look into the project seriously, and he was informed that the proposal had been submitted to the Science, Technology and Innovations Ministry.

"Even if the test flight could take years but we must start from here. It is a good opportunity for Malaysia. This is a new field that would create a new market niche for tourism and new jobs," Dr Collins said.

After the tests, the initial flight would be a suborbital journey to space and later, an orbital journey, he said.

"We have made a study and survey that one suborbital journey would cost around RM10,000 to RM20,000 per person, and we consider it as affordable," he said.

The aviation and space industries in Europe were considering to set up hotels and provide accommodation for tourists a night or two in space, he said.

^^ I stay in Ipoh for so long, I know this kind of things has a low chance of becoming a reality.

Cmon, I just want them to upgrade the Airport's runway so Airasia can fly here. The government should settle the basic fundamentals and needs first before thinking of some castles in the sky.

Thanks for the news anyway:cheers:

Lapangan Terbang Ipoh Tempat Berlepas Ke Angkasa Lepas?

Karnival UrbanLive cara ntv7 dekati penonton

Wireless Ipoh lakar sejarah dunia ICT Perak

Tengku Adnan Asks Firefly To Expand Destinations

LANGKAWI, May 21 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Airline System Bhd-owned community airline, FireFly Sdn Bhd, needs to expand its destinations and can use Subang Airport as its second operation centre after Penang, said Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.

He said from Subang Airport, FireFly could fly to Ipoh and Banda Aceh, Padang and Medan in Indonesia.

"Expanding the routes will bring more tourists to the country," he said at the press conference after opening the Fifth Global Meet Malaysia 2007 here today.

FireFly, which started operations early April from Penang International Airport, flies to Kota Bahru, Kuantan, Kuala Terengganu and Langkawi and Phuket and Koh Samui in Thailand using Fokker 50 aircraft.

Meanwhile, Tengku Adnan said the Langkawi-Bangkok route, operated by Thai AirAsia, was not carrying "a good load".

"We have ask the carrier to hang on. The Tourism Ministry will organise joint promotions to woo more Thai tourists," he said.

The Fifth Global Meet Malaysia is an annual event initiated by Tourism Malaysia and Malaysian airlines to promote the country as a destination for meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions.

KPEC berpotensi diguna sekolah seluruh negara

Hadir sama, Pengarah Pelajaran Perak, Datuk Mohammed Zakaria Mohd Noor; Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif K-Perak Incorporation, Datuk Yaacob Nordin dan Pengarah Projek iNZed Malaysia Ltd, David Copeland.

New bridge to be built

THE construction of a new bridge to replace the old one at Jalan Sultan Iskandar in Ipoh is expected to start by the year-end.

Perak Infrastructure, Public Uti-lities, Water, Energy and Telecom-munications Committee chairman Datuk Ho Cheng Wang said the design for the RM10mil bridge was ready.

“We are waiting for funds from the Treasury,” he told reporters after opening the Industrialised Building System (IBS) seminar, organised by Construction Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIDB) in Ipoh re-cently.

Ho, who is also Perak MCA secretary, said the state government had yet to decide whether to build a temporary bridge beside the present one or seal off the road.

“I welcome feedback from the people on the matter,” he said.

Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali was reported to have said that the bridge was more than 40 years old and no longer safe to be used, especially by heavy vehicles.

On another matter, Ho said mo-torists might not be allowed to use roads around Pantai Putri Hospital in Ipoh while work to build a flyover in front of the hospital was in pro-gress.

Work on the RM32mil flyover commenced on Dec 20, 2005, and the flyover is expected to be completed in August.

Hip-Inn.com To Open No-frills Hotels In Ipoh
May 31, 2007 17:15 PM

IPOH, May 31 (Bernama) -- Hip-Inn.Com Sdn Bhd today unveiled its no-frills hotel with 70-room capacity in Pasir Puteh here which is due for official opening by end of this year.

Under the Hip-Inn.Com brand, the company planned to open another hotel with 50-room capacity in Bandar Meru Raya here by end of 2008.

Hip-Inn.Com's founder Mohd Fizlie Mansor said the two locations were identified after detailed studies involving factors such as market potential and client base.

"The increasing business and leisure travel linked to these areas led our company to look at providing a branded product in this segment. Hip-Inn.Com hotels will appeal to hip young urbanites," Mohd Fizlie said.

"If a hotel is priced too low you're usually afraid of what you will find lurking behind the door. Knowing you can get a clean, crisp room with some designer panache is an attractive proposition," he said during a media briefing here Thursday.

Mohd Fizlie said the Hip-Inn.Com hotels will tap niche markets and target middle-class travellers.

"We aim to be present in secondary cities and suburban areas," he said.

According to Mohd Fizlie, the Hip-Inn.Com hotel is probably the only one in Malaysia providing triple play media technology.

"The triple play media is basically voice, Internet and video on a single platform which enables guests to enjoy room entertainment such as access to 1,000 channels via IPTV (Internet Protocol television) and Internet game zone as well Internet browsing," he said.

Wi-Fi connectivity will also be provided in public areas and individual rooms, he added.

Hip-Inn.Com's co-founder Elhan Wan Hassan said the company was offering a radical hotel concept and planned to expand to 18 hotels around the country within two years from its base in Ipoh.

Abdullah Announces Two Projects To Spur Kinta Valley Development

IPOH, June 29 (Bernama) -- Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi announced today that the government will upgrade the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport here and establish a commuter train service between Ipoh and Penang.

The prime minister said the two projects would spur development in the Kinta Valley.

"We'll extend the runway. We need to have a better airport," he told reporters after attending a luncheon with state government and Barisan Nasional leaders, department heads and Umno veterans at a hotel here before concluding his one-day visit to Perak.

Abdullah said the airport would be expanded and eventually used by Malaysia Airlines' low-fare subsidiary, Firefly.

However, he did not say when the projects would start.

The state government and several groups, especially those representing Perak tourism and manufacturing sectors, have been clamouring for the airport to be upgraded to enable it to accommodate bigger aircraft.

The Transport Ministry has previously suggested that the airport be used as a hub for low-cost carriers for the northern region and Asia.

The Perak government has also indicated its willingness to fork out RM40 million to upgrade the airport if there were guarantees that the facility would be used for domestic and international flights.

On the proposed commuter train between Ipoh and Penang, Abdullah said the service was needed in line with the rapid growth seen in Perak and the northern region comprising places like Penang, Seberang Perai and Sungai Petani in Kedah.

He said the commuter service would address traffic congestion and facilitate the movement of people between the states involved.

In his speech, Abdullah urged the people to keep tabs on goings-on in their respective families as this was necessary towards ensuring the well-being of the society.

During his brief visit to the state accompanied by his wife Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah, the prime minister opened an exposition to commemorate the country's 50th independence anniversary, Visit Malaysia 2007 and 100th anniversary of Perak Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry at the Indera Mulia Stadium here.

Abdullah and Jeanne, who married recently, were also feted by the wives of state elected representatives at Perak Menteri Besar's official residence where the couple was presented with a cake.

Morubina To Build A 5-star Hotel At Ipoh Riverside

IPOH, July 4 (Bernama) -- The Morubina Group will invest RM120 million in developing the Kinta Riverfront Hotel & Service Suites at Jalan Lim Bo Seng here, due for completion in September 2009.

Established in 1981, the Ipoh-based group has interests in hotel, property development and management, construction, food and beverage, pre-school to higher education, manufacturing and retailing.

Group managing director Ting Sing Yiew said Wednesday the project on a 2-ha site on the banks of the Kinta River will have two components - a RM80 million 19-storey five-star hotel and 20-storey RM40 million serviced apartments and suites.

"The 313-room hotel will be the first five-star here and its Grand Ballroom will be the largest pillarless hall in the city, able to accommodate up to 1,600 people," he said when met at the company's sales office here.

Ting expressed confidence that the hotel will help draw more visitors to Ipoh even though some quarters question whether the state capital really needs a five-star hotel.

"Some things need to be done to draw visitors; Ipoh needs a presentable hotel when big events are held," he stressed. "I am sure that when the hotel is ready, organisers of big and important events will beat a path to its door.

"Furthermore, Morubina seeks to integrate lifestyle property developments into the travel and tourism industry to enhance the mutual gain of both sectors."

On the 239 serviced apartments and suites, Ting said buyers have two choices - the 3-room Type A with 1,223 sq ft and the 2-room Type B of 808 sq ft.

Type A, with a river and park view, is priced between RM338,999 and RM438,999, while Type B is going for RM199,999-RM299,999.

Almost 40 percent of the units have been sold since the soft launch two weeks ago.

"We are also offering five penthouse units at between RM730,000 and RM2.8 million, but these are for invited purchasers only," he added.

According to Ting, the company will hold road shows abroad, including in Medan (Indonesia), Guangzhao (China), Thailand and Hong Kong, to promote the project, which will be officially launched in September.

He said the state government has agreed to upgrade and beautify a 29-ha area adjacent to the project.

"We will be developing a one-stop leisure centre with more than 300 shops and bazaars, over 50 cafes, restaurants and bistros, a flea market, and an auditorium along the 1.5 km stretch of the river bank," he said.

"This goes to prove that transforming the Kinta Valley into a tourist destination and restoring it to its former glory is no longer a dream."

Mini replicas of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Tower Bridge, the Penang Bridge, Bach de Roda Bridge in Spain and the Millau Bridge in France will be built at a cost of RM100,000 each as tourist attractions.

The Golden Gate Bridge has already been completed, Ting said.

Facelift for Central Market Traders will temporarily move to the tents outside
Thursday August 2, 2007
TheStar

AFTER months of delay, refurbishment work for the Ipoh Central Market has finally begun.

Datuk Bandar Datuk Mohamad Rafiai Moktar said the RM5.3mil project, to be carried out in stages, was scheduled to be completed in six months.

“In the meantime, traders will be moved out and trade under tents outside the market,” he said.

“The contractor and traders will negotiate among themselves on the schedule for the temporary shift,” he told reporters after chairing the council’s full board meeting yesterday.

“We hope the refurbishment will provide traders and market goers a more comfortable environment,” he said.

It has been reported that the scope of work involves repainting the interior and exterior of the market, repairing broken tiles, rewiring, providing better ventilation and repairing the drainage system.

The car park and the poultry section located next to the main market building will also be renovated.

Earlier in his speech, Mohamad Rafiai said the council had formed a task force to recover assessment from ratepayers.

“The assessment arrears have been increasing since 2005 from RM39.4mil to RM45mil until June this year.

“The council aims to recover 25% owed by ratepayers, which amounts to RM11.2mil,” he said.

He added that until June this year, the council had sealed 3,335 properties and recovered RM1.3mil.

He also said that a traffic lights post had been put up at the accident-prone junction of Jalan Lee Kwee Foh and Jalan Hospital.

“The RM123,247 project is expected to be completed next month,” he said.

On another matter, Mohamad Rafiai urged Ipoh residents to put up flags at their premises in conjunction with the Merdeka celebration.

“Their premises should also be lit up before and on Aug 31,” he said.

Proposal to build new airport near Ipoh

THE Global Flying Hospitals (GFH), an international body that brings humanitarian medical support to developing countries, is willing to build a new airport in Seri Iskandar, about 40km from Ipoh.

State Infrastructure and Public Utilities chairman Datuk Ho Cheng Wang said the project which is expected to cost about RM301mil would not only be used for GFH’s operations but also to accommodate bigger aircraft such as Boeing 747s.

Ho said the GFH proposal was among the options being considered by a special committee comprising the Transport Ministry, the State Economic Planning Unit, the Economic Planning Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department, and the State Development Cor-poration which had met thrice so far.

Ho, who is also a member of the special committee, said it was important to have a new airport because no aeroplane was landing at the Sultan Azlan Shah airport now.

Speaking at a press conference, he said the other option being considered was to extend the runway to 1,981m from the present length of 1,798m at a cost of RM70mil but this could only accommodate the landings of A320 Airbus.

“Under the second proposal, the Sultan Azlan Shah airport runway will be extended to 2,400m at a cost of RM390mil but this will entail the acquisition of land and 605 houses have to go.

“I personally prefer the closing down of the airport so that Ipoh town can see high-rise buildings.

“The Civil Aviation Department has restricted the height of buildings in the town due to the presence of the airport nearby,” he added.

Ho said the GFH proposal was “logically better” as the body would bear the cost of construction of the new airport in Seri Iskandar.

“The proposed airport in Seri Iskandar will have a 3,780m-long runway and dual lanes, enabling aircraft of any size to land and take off simultaneously,” he said.

However, he said a final decision would be made after the Perak Government received feedback from the people.

Ho said Seri Iskandar was an ideal location since it was near the recently launched Northern Corridor Economic Region en-compassing Perlis, Kedah, Penang and northern Perak.

He said the Perak Government has offered 450ha of land in Seri Iskandar for a premium of RM10 and the area is already the home of various higher learning institutions such as Universiti Petronas and UiTM.

“The areas have also been identified for the Malaysia My Second Home Programme.

“Seri Iskandar is also about 30 minutes’ drive to Kampar, Ipoh and Pangkor, the prime tourist destination of Perak,” he added.
