17 companies have submitted bids for the consultancy contract for the BD50m first phase expansion of the airport, said Capt Al Gaoud. The Tender Board will soon appoint a consultant, he added. " Work on the expansion project will start early next year, for completion in 2008. "The project will include eight new airbridges, 10 aircraft stands, travelators and expansion of the baggage reclaim area."
The number of check-in desks will be doubled from 40 to 80 and the immigration counters from eight to 14. Capt Al Gaoud said a new lighting system would also be installed to upgrade the airport to Category II level, allowing aircraft to land at a visibility of 300 metres.
Another project is the resurfacing of the existing runway at a cost of BD11m. A boundary fencing will be built at a cost of BD2.7m. Plans are also underway to build a cargo oasis at the airport complex at an estimated cost of BD5m, said Capt Al Gaoud.
The new runway will avoid diversion of aircraft to the nearest airports in the region, in the event of an emergency or maintenance taking place at the existing runway, he noted. Such diversion earlier interrupted schedules and incurred more costs to the airlines and inconvenience to passengers.

Elmahri April 25th, 2006, 10:42 AM The Bahrain International Airport is to be re-designed to handle an annual 12 million passengers by 2015, a top official said yesterday.
Ahmed Nehmat Ali, Assistant Undersecretary for Airport Services, told the opening session of the Airport Development, Expansion and Management Summit Middle East that this was the projected passenger traffic by that time and, keeping it in mind, two consultants had been asked to prepare detailed project reports.
“One of the two reports will be accepted soon and a final consultant will be appointed by the end of this year,” he said. “We are hoping work will start immediately afterwards and the newly-designed facility will be operational by the beginning of 2010.”
He said the two consultants are ADPi from France and Jacob Gibbs from Britain and they had both submitted very comprehensive, although different designs. “These are now being evaluated.”
The Assistant Undersecretary said not only was aviation growing in this part of the world, the national airline, Gulf Air, had also contributed to the growth. “This will only increase as time passes with Abu Dhabi pulling out of it and Gulf Air concentrating on further growth out of Bahrain.”
In addition to that, he said, more modifications were also now on at the airport. “We have spent nearly BD25 million in the last three years on giving the existing facilities a new look, all of which will be integrated into the new design, with more gates and more infrastructure to accommodate the state-of-the-art large aircraft.”
He said $300 million has already been allocated towards the expansion and refurbishment programme of the passenger terminal building, a full re-surfacing of the main runway, a new perimeter fence, together with state-of-the-art security systems, as well as additional parking bays. “The private sector is also investing in a major infrastructure project creating a new multi-storey car park and a retail complex next to the main terminal building.”
Abdullah Ahmed Mohammed, acting director of engineering and maintenance at the airport, said the physical expansion of the airport would also take place soon. “A piece of 10 square km of land has been reserved for this expansion and it will involve making the existing roads go under the runway.”
He said over six million people travelled through the Bahrain airport in 2005 and they are expecting seven million to pass through by the end of 2006.
Qatar4Ever April 28th, 2006, 12:31 PM It about time the moved the airport to somewhere else. The land should be converted into residentail area. Airport would be better placed in umm al na3san island.

Pearl of the Gulf May 15th, 2006, 05:45 PM i guess they didn’t decide of the design of the entrance. i kind of like the first one the square shape..
Skyline-BRN May 15th, 2006, 06:05 PM i loooove it! the terminals look ! also I think i like the straight entrance shade better than the curvy one because alot of the new airports seem to have that curvy design these days!
Elmahri May 15th, 2006, 09:30 PM cool, i like the 3rd one. it looks like an air plane
Pearl of the Gulf May 16th, 2006, 01:22 AM ok I saw the news on tv today, and here’s how I think the renders I posted fit in.
they are going to build this terminal for the first phase of the expansion.

then it will be connect to this other terminal for the second phase.

MANAMA: Bahrain's Inter-national Airport is to become a futuristic landmark. Plans for the first phase of a massive expansion project were yesterday approved by Prime Minister Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa. It will raise capacity to 15 million passengers and increase to 73 the number of aircraft hangars and bridges.
He welcomed the development at a work meeting in the presence of Crown Prince and Economic Development Board chairman Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transportation Shaikh Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa briefed them on offers presented by international companies, specialised in designing airports.
The Premier advised them the civilised aesthetic image of Bahrain be taken into account when designing in a way that makes the airport one of the country's landmarks to attract more airline companies and reinforce its position as a main facility that provides outstanding services.

New passenger departure and arrival premises, VIP halls, duty free markets and restaurants are also to be built and air cargo facilities and baggage capacity developed, Shaikh Ali revealed.
Elmahri May 16th, 2006, 07:16 AM very nice design, simple and modern.
Is this part going to be connected with the old airport and where exactly will it be?
cazanova May 16th, 2006, 09:47 AM it's obvious it is going to be connected from the south side. ifthe skecth dimensions are proportional, then i believe the the airort building is at least 3 times the existing one and the car park almost double the current one

Temanga May 17th, 2006, 09:14 PM I there that there have been at least two major airport design companies that have bid for the contract to implement the expansion.
The first render that Pearl of the Gulf has posted is the proposal of a different company to the second. I don't think that the second one will work as it looks to infringe the new back-up runway that they have recently finished at Bahrain Airport.
B-Patriot May 18th, 2006, 03:13 AM Yeah, they don't look like phases of the same project, thhey're different.... The second one sort of looks cooloer though i think =/
(And Welcome to the Forum Temanga :))
Pearl of the Gulf May 18th, 2006, 12:26 PM first of all welcome to the forum. the six renders that I posted were the ones released to the press after the meeting with the PM about the airport. i’m sure they already settled on one design from a single company, otherwise they wouldn’t be showing them to the PM for approval. plus the article states that the first phase was launched and the second phase was approved.
but when trying to analyse from the renders which is the first phase and which is the second your guess is as good as mine. :)

Hmmm...on closer inspection I'm even more doubtful that the second render is actually a realistic proposal. There look to be 8 gates on the right hand side in total, with 4 expanding north-east at an approximate right angle to the current concourse.
For these gates to be Airbus A380 compatible they need to be 80m wide and therefore 4 gates take up a width of 320m. Add a manouvering area and the required safety margin (you cannot have gates too close to active runways) and you perhaps would need a distance of 500-600m between the current concourse and the backup runway (which is parallel to the old, main runway but closer to the current concourse) in order to fit in this proposal. There simply isn't enough space!

i understand what you’re saying, but could phase two and possibly phase one be constructed further away than we think. could the airport expansion follow the same direction as Doha, where by they reclaim land for the new terminal and runway? ?

As I understand it, Phase One will involve an extension to the existing concourse and then after that, whether it's 'Phase Two' or not (being aware of the notion of 'shifting goalposts') I think that will involve significant land reclaimation.
Of course, land reclaimation is only really required for a second runway, and there are plenty of successful single-runway airports in the world (London Gatwick comes to mind). Is one really required with an airport that only handles 6m passengers per year?

Pearl of the Gulf January 14th, 2007, 09:40 PM Work on the BD126 million ($334.2 million) first phase expansion of the Bahrain International Airport has received the green light with the award of the design contract to JacobsGibb, a subsidiary of the London-based Jacobs Engineering Group.
The expansion will make it the most modern and user-friendly airport in the region, according to the Deputy Prime Minister and Transportation Minister Shaikh Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa.
Works and Housing Minister Fahmi Al Jowder signed the BD12.95 million deal recently for the project’s state-of-the-art designs with JacobsGibb in association with HOK Architects and the local Bahrain consulting firm Mohammed Salahuddin Consulting Engineering Bureau (MSCEB).
Civil Aviation Affairs (CAA) undersecretary Captain Abdulrahman Al Gaoud said the expansion, when completed in 2010, would increase the airport capacity to handle up to 15 million passengers a year.
Phase one of the project involves the expansion of the airport terminal building with an additional 125,000 sq m of floor area to cater to the increase in passenger and aircraft traffic up to 2015. The current floor area is 51,000 sq m. Besides the additional floor area, the terminal will boast an additional seven gates serviced by state-of-the-art air bridges, giving a total of 14 gates with air bridges, as well as 11 additional remote parking stands.
The seven additional gates would comprise stands to accommodate five code E type aircraft, which are Airbus A330 or A340 and Boeing 747 or 777 aircraft. One stand will be for code C type aircraft, which are the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 as well as one code F New Large Aircraft (NLA). An existing parking bay will be refurbished to accommodate code F aircraft providing a total of two stands at the expanded terminal to cater to the Airbus A380-type super-jumbo aircraft.
The construction approach will be designed such that it will permit the existing terminal operations to continue until the expansion is completed. The majority of worksites are landside, providing safer construction and minimal disruption of airside operations.
The project is expected to take 49 months to complete with an expected design period of 15 months and a construction period of 24 months and a period set aside for tendering in between.
Works and Housing Ministry Public Works Affairs under-secretary Nayef Al Kalali said although the present airport was designed to handle only 3 million passengers “we are now handling 7 million.” This is done using every expertise, by the airport director and his staff.
IATA has forecast a yearly passenger increase of four per cent for the region while in the Far East it is seven per cent. “One year, however, the passenger increase shot up by 22 per cent which is really alarming. That is why we have a long-term plan. We are not stopping at 15 million. We are now thinking beyond our times,” said Al Kalali.
“The design of the airport is unique, its beauty lies in that within the same area it can be expanded and capacity increased. As soon as the first phase is completed, we would be in a position to start the second phase targeting a passenger handling capacity of 22 million. The third phase of expansion would take the airport handling capacity to 45 million. Together with expanding the area at the airport, we are also training personnel to handle the work that would come additionally. The baggage handling capacity will increase from 3,000 bags per hour to 15,000 bags. The check-in counters will increase from 40 to 80.
“We have studied everything that a passenger would need. It should be a user-friendly airport. People would not have to walk distances within the airport, everything would be within their easy reach. The beauty of Bahrain airport now is that once a passenger disembarks, he can get out in 15 minutes. We want to maintain that even after the expansion. That is one of the challenges we face,” he added.
Martin Stevenson, Jacobs’ director of Operations said: “Jacobs has been in Bahrain for a long time. Jacobs is one of the world’s largest and most diverse providers of professional technical services. It is a huge opportunity for us. The airport project would exhibit part of our skills for delivering transport infrastructure, which we do worldwide.”
Gibb was the original designer of the airport in the early 70s, and has made it a very simple airport to get around. “It is a very intuitive airport not like others where people keep changing levels all the time. While moving towards the facilities that would cater to 12 million passengers or more we want to keep that simplicity,” he said.
Jacobs’ services include scientific and speciality consulting as well as all aspects of design, construction and operations and maintenance.
In addition, sophisticated computer modelling and information management tools enable Jacobs’ airport specialist to forecast human traffic through gates and terminals.

YeMeNi_guy January 15th, 2007, 04:48 AM thats great news
Halawala January 17th, 2007, 11:47 AM ^^^Great news about the expansion. Yesterday I went to Bahrain, and I realized that the airport is exactly 90% like Heathrow airport in London. Did they desgin it to look that way? BTW the airport needs to expand cause there wasnt enough airbridges to bring us in.
zexyworm December 20th, 2007, 09:59 AM Guys,
Does anyone know the status of the BIA expansion program? I recall that a contract with JacobsGibb was signed last January 2007 for the design/build contract.
We havnen't heard anything since then, and if I recall correctly, construction on a shopping mall/parking structure adjacent to the existing parking area of the airport was going to start imminently following January 2007.
Any updates are appreciated guys.

Adel March 14th, 2008, 06:43 AM Consultant to review airport plan
By SOMAN BABY
A CONSULTANCY contract to review the masterplan for the expansion of Bahrain International Airport is to be awarded later this month, it was revealed yesterday.
The study will be completed by June this year, said Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) chairman Shaikh Daij bin Salman Al Khalifa.
The Tender Board opened two technical bids for the consultancy contract yesterday.
The companies which submitted the bids are Bain & Co, and GE Consulting.
Their financial bids will be opened within two weeks, following which the contractor will be selected.
"BAC is currently in the process of reviewing and fine-tuning the ambitious masterplan commissioned by Civil Aviation Affairs (CAA), and the passenger terminal expansion project," said Shaikh Daij.
"The selected company will with vast consultancy experience in airport management and development of airport infrastructure and facilities to assist BAC in formulating a comprehensive strategic plan for the airport.
"The consultant will take a close look at these two projects and will also suggest suitable business models for the airport."
Based on their recommendations and bearing in mind the core objectives of the BAC, these two projects will be fine-tuned and implemented, said Shaikh Daij.
"However, the immediate task in hand is to ensure that we have a smooth transition process where the responsibilities of Civil Aviation Affairs with regard to the Airport operation and management are transferred to BAC, with CAA retaining the role of a regulator," said Shaikh Daij.

They've got it spot on; the most important thing is getting around the airport quickly.
Natural Bahraini May 31st, 2008, 05:06 PM So i'm guessing it won't be very big or fancy.
TheRedofBahrain May 31st, 2008, 06:38 PM No it probably will, but they're just stressing the fact that getting around the airport quickly is very important.
For example, Dubai's airport is beautiful, but its not very convenient because you usually have to walk a great deal to get where you want.
doriangray June 2nd, 2008, 07:19 AM The expansion will be quite big although. See picture below.

MANAMA: Work on a second terminal at Bahrain International Airport will start early next year. It will almost double the current capacity of the airport - allowing it to handle 12 million passengers every year, up from 7m at present.
Bahrain Airport Company chief executive officer Dr Osama Alali told the GDN the terminal was expected to be ready by 2013.
He said it was included in the first phase of the airport's expansion, which will also see construction of an Airport Centre boasting a multi-storey car park capable of holding 3,000 vehicles, cinemas and shops.
Further expansions are planned in future that would allow the airport to handle 28m passengers by 2038, added Dr Alali.
He said the project was being carried out in close co-ordination with Civil Aviation Affairs as part of Bahrain's Vision 2030.
Kuwaiti April 29th, 2009, 06:20 PM very good news for bahrain...
i am an aviation enthusiast, i fell in love with airplanes since i was a kid lol.
so this news is good for me. any new airport project is good in my books. :D
but ive got one question...
can someone please post some new pictures for the airport?
the old ones were removed by flickr and i cant see anything. :(
that map overview which doriangray showed is a very exciting prospect of bahrain's future. i honestly cant wait to see the day that bahrain completes all these beautiful projects.
imagine 20 years down the lane you will be driving your car along the gulf road, passing through all these new artificial islands and making your way to the new bahrain airport area, and the diyar muharraq. inshallah! :D
but i sincerely hope they stop reclaiming any more land after this...
otherwise the arabian gulf will become arabian river LOL.
but from what dorian provided, i can see bahrain being a nice place to sail a yacht in the future. :P
Adel May 20th, 2009, 03:45 AM «

A MASSIVE BD1.8 billion expansion of Bahrain International Airport aims to make it one of the best in the world.
The expansion, planned over the next 30 years, will triple the passenger capacity to 27 million a year.
Two new terminals will be opened in the next four years as part of the expansion.
Terminal Two will be commissioned by 2012 and Terminal 1A will become operational a year later, Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) chief executive officer Dr Osama Alali told the GDN.
"The two new terminals will make the BIA one of the most modern and futuristic in the world," he told the GDN.
"All modern facilities, including recreation and leisure areas, shopping centres, hotels and anything else that a modern traveller needs, will be incorporated in the new development."
Artist's designs even include a swimming pool.
The present terminal building (Terminal 1) will be demolished in 2014 and replaced with a brand new state-of-the-art structure within a few years, said Dr Alali.
"Piling work on the Terminal 2 construction will begin early in 2010 and construction will go on at a rapid pace thereafter," he said.
Architects for the expansion are expected to be appointed before the end of this year, while the main contractor is expected to be appointed early next year.
"The expansion will ultimately create 110 (aircraft) stands, including 87 with contact gates. Currently there are 25 stands, including seven air-bridges," said Dr Alali.
He said the development is part of a BD1.8bn plan for the airport, spread over the next 30 years.
"There will always be some kind of a cost escalation as we go along but the BD1.8bn figure is as we see it now," said Dr Alali.
About BD30 million had already been spent on improving and modernising several facilities at the airport.
"This includes 17 new remote (aircraft) parking bays, installation of automatic baggage screening facilities, improved ground handling and overall new passenger handling standards," he said.
BAC is wholly owned by Bahrain Mumtalakat Holdings, the investment arm of the Bahrain government.
It took over responsibilities for the operation and management of the airport, with Civil Aviation Affairs (CAA) retaining a regulatory role, in January last year.
Dr Alali said the modernisation was being done in collaboration and consultation with the CAA and Bahrain Airport Services (BAS).
"By the time the whole development is completed in 2038, the airport will be able to handle 27 million passengers every year, from the present around 9 million," he said.
"The cargo handling capacity will also increase from the present 350,000 cubic meters to 1.5 million cubic meters."
He said the all ground handling facilities at the airport were being enhanced in collaboration with the company that manages Munich Airport in Germany.
"We have also entered into several other partnerships and joint ventures with international companies to improve people's skills, general cleanliness at the airport and give it an overall 'new' look," said Dr Alali.
He said the new baggage screening procedures, which will be operational well before the high season in December, will mean passengers will not have to get their baggage screened before they go for check-in.
The BIA master plan, developed by a leading aviation consultancy, is expected to significantly bolster the airport's standing as a regional hub.
"Bahrain was once the most modern airport in the world with many facilities unmatched by others in the region. We aim to bring that glory back to Bahrain," said Dr Alali.
"Our role is to improve the quality of the BIA infrastructure and services, as well as to introduce dynamic procedural systems in order for it to reach world class standards and drive profitable growth.
"We aim to position it as a global player with progressive facilities-as an attractive destination in itself."
He said BIA at present hosts 42 airlines and it is home to national airline Gulf Air and Bahrain Air.
"United Airlines is expected to begin operations in the very near future so we will have non-stop flights between Bahrain and Washington soon," said Dr Alali.
A new VIP terminal and an Airport Centre that will includes shops, entertainment facilities and car parking will be developed as part of the project.

MANAMA: The Bahrain International Airport (BIA) has been named at Middle East Airport of the year 2010.
It wan top honours at the Skytrax World Airport Awards in Brussels.
Attended by top management from airports around the world, this award was among 30 awards presented by Skytrax chairman Edward Plaisted.
"Passengers are looking for the easiest airport experience, and BIA's uniqueness as a compact airport, combined with premium staff efficiency and speed of processes has attributed to its win," he said.
In the award ceremony organised by Skytrax, the judging panel cited easiest and most efficient experience as the key judgment criteria.
BIA's ability to deliver on those criteria, to provide passengers a significantly different travel experience as a result, has led to its success.
"I am naturally delighted that BIA has won this award. It is especially significant since it highlights the combined efforts of all contributing entities within the airport," said Bahrain Airport Company chief executive officer Dr Osama Al Ali.
"Since its inception, BIA has focused on bringing the best service to its passengers. This award is proof of our commitment to excellence, and represents the first step to enhancing the status of BIA - allowing it to feature competitively in a global arena."
"With the new expansion plans for BIA, the current levels of speed and efficiency will be further enhanced, to deliver the highest standards," he added.

B-Patriot April 1st, 2010, 06:54 PM This is really important.. Hope they don't delay any of the airport expansion plans..
Having a smooth and efficient immigration system, and having flights and connections in the region are very crucial to our plans to be/remain a financial centre... If we wanna be the gateway to the gulf, we'll need a lot of 'bridges' and 'connections'.. Dubai is still beating us on this front..
