jaysonjaz February 15th, 2006, 12:08 AM I like that one but it's impossible to stop and take a picture there. I also like the Pigtown mural which I posted in my recent photo thread. However, I have to admit (despite dismissing my wife's complaints about me venturing into "bad neighborhoods") that I felt somewhat nervous getting out of my car and taking a picture of that one.
Hey Now! As a four year Pigtown resident, I have to tell you that we are only quasi-shady. We are def a neighborhood on the up-and-up.

Please post as often as you'd like. :)
If you are able, would you give us some firsthand info on 414 Light Street? Taller than 600 ft.? 700 ft.?
If you are not able to release info, I understand, but, will be more anxiously awaiting Thursday. :D
Bawlmer5 February 15th, 2006, 04:54 AM I can't comment any further so please don't ask any more. I enjoy viewing this forum often and enjoy seeing people share my enthusiasm for development in Baltimore City. I was trying to calm the anxiety about the project but can see that I chose an inopportune time to start posting and I only stirred things up. I'll go back in hiding and will keep my mouth shut.

Since you're knowledgeable about this project, hopefully you'll be able to offer valuable perspective on the many different Baltimore development projects, welcome aboard!

Hehe... for the record, I totally agree with you. There were just some shady characters around that day. However, the sun definately brought people out; lots of people on the streets, sitting on their front steps, etc. It's certainly not the worst area of the city. Far from it.
Has anyone else seen the CCTV cameras with the police sign and flashing blue lights above them? There are a number of them around the Wilkens / Fulton / Monroe area on the SW side of town. Those lights flash day and night; I feel like I'm in a war zone or something. Speaking of war, when my family were visiting from the UK in December my five-year-old nephew was looking out of the window on our train ride at the B&O Railroad Museum and said, "I think there's been a world war here!" Very funny but also very sad.

Thanks for that; I've been looking forward to seeing it. 95 is pretty curvy through there at the moment so I'm glad to see it will be straightened out. I assume those are the express toll lanes in the middle. What is the timeframe for this project? I assume the new Ridge Road bridge they are working on is in preparation for this? I think somebody mentioned that a couple of weeks ago.

1 more day left!!!! This is going to be the LONGEST 24 hours of having to wait for something in my life!!!!....lol.
Brian21 February 15th, 2006, 06:35 PM ^tell me about it. The anxiety is killing me.
Furiine February 15th, 2006, 07:07 PM Woowoo! A new tallest. Man, I still can't grasp that lol... it's been 33 years, well before I came to Earth. It will be fun seeing a new tallest rise in the State of Maryland (all Maryland lovers will get to share the pride I assume.) :D
pepperjack February 15th, 2006, 07:33 PM There are many of those flashing blue cameras over here on the east side. Up on Fayette and around the hopsital. I also noticed there are several cameras on Eastern Ave by my place, but they don't have the flashing blue on top of them.
Big brother is watching you...

I cannot stand those flashing blue lights.. I think they should only just be a solid blue light. The flashing light is a warning for all to stay away.. including any who might be stupid enough to commit crime under them.

I don't know how residents can stand them at all. Those flashing blue lights have to be disturbing at night. I'm sure its hard to sleep with blue lights coming through your window.
wada_guy February 15th, 2006, 08:41 PM EHRLICH'S ANTI BALTIMORE WRATH IS ABOUT TO BE FELT - AGAIN
I don't think it is any secret that the governor of Maryland has no love for the City of Baltimore. Now he is going on a job looting spree at the city's expense.
Yesterday there was an article that the entire Maryland Department of Planning is to be relocated from State Center to a new HQ building to be built in Prince George's county outside of DC.
Now, he wants to move the Department of Health lab to Jessup from State Center. All of this is bad news for Baltimore city. I really hope this fool who brought us Flanagan as head of Transportation, and too many other inept people to name, looses in the next election. In my opinion, Ehrlich is an IDIOT who hates Baltimore City. His actions show that very clearly. So much for smart growth. If he had his way, I think every state job would be in the burbs. As you can tell, these events have really got me angry. We are looking at over 300 high paying positions going out of the city.
Development of $150M State Lab Gets a Boost
By Barbra Murray
Last updated: February 10, 2006 09:15am
BALTIMORE-Plans for the development of a new central laboratory for the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene have taken a significant step forward. Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. has allotted $9.4 million in Maryland's proposed FY 2007 budget to help facilitate the $150-million project.
The planned 200,000-sf building will be located in the Baltimore suburb of Jessup, replacing the existing lab in Downtown Baltimore. To be operated by the Department of Health's Laboratories Administration, the new central lab will replace the existing 1960s era property, which has fallen into such disrepair that officials have deemed it more cost-effective to replace than refurbish.
The new locale will provide a high-tech environment for isolating diseases and performing tests. "It will not necessarily be much larger than the existing space, but it will be more efficient and will be state-of-the-art," DHMH public affairs officer John Hammond tells GlobeSt.com. "It will also be more centrally located in the state."
The funds provided for in the state budget would finance the building's initial design, which is part of Phase I of the project. The remainder of the first phase includes site work, schematics and initial construction drawings. Phase II will consist of completed construction drawings during FY 2008 in preparation for the start of construction in FY 2009.
"This new laboratory will help Maryland meet future public health commitments," Ehrlich says, adding that "the state-of-the-art facility will enable scientists to look for and identify disease outbreaks efficiently." If all goes according to schedule, the new laboratory will reach completion in 2011.
Brian21 February 15th, 2006, 09:24 PM Ehrich really pisses me off. O'malley will for sure kick him out of the state house in the up coming election, and I can't wait.
Furiine February 15th, 2006, 10:20 PM Ehrlich is from Arbutus, after all... it's a classic example of suburban, anti-city sentiment. I don't know that O'Malley will have such an easy trip to Annapolis, because the criticism is swarming all over him. Though, I think it's odd how Douge Duncan can liken Baltimore to Montgomery County in terms of their status! Of course Baltimore is going to have more crime and poverty than MC. For one, Baltimore and MC are total polar opposites, on virtually all issues.

PeterSmith February 16th, 2006, 01:01 AM That downtown job increase seems like a pretty high increase. Sounds like good news. I'm surprised that there are that many jobs downtown - almost 100,000. Thanks for posting that Steven.

Agreed, unfortunatly.
seanlax5 February 16th, 2006, 01:12 AM Schools in the city are getting closed!!!!!
Not me, thank god! Most are in south and/or east baltimore. Wonder why?
I'm not changing though. Thanks you all!

No Shit! Don't even get me started! I think they shouldn't have lights, because it is waaaaayyy too obvious. My friend can't sleep with it, and he does say there aren't drugs there no more (never was anywho). Everyone hates them, and they should be on every corner (camera or not) for a HUGE cut in crime. hahahahah!
Sorry for that.
wada_guy February 16th, 2006, 02:25 AM I went to the Governor's web site to sent an e-mail voicing my great displeasure about all the State Center jobs going to the counties. Before I wrote my e-mail, I checked out the Maryland Department Of Planning's web site.
Believe it or not, the Planning Department is in charge of the Smart Growth program in Maryland! Just how stupid is it to move the agency heading this program from the middle of the city - next to public transportation (Subway, Bus, and Light Rail), to the suburbs where you have to drive?
Come to find out, the director is from PG county and she ran for Congress from district 5 as a Republican and lost. Well, now I know how she got her job and where that idea came from. You can't send e-mails from the Planning site or I would have. So instead, I'm sending her a letter.
I suppose when they rebuild the State Center complex there won't be a need for any office space when they are done. Since I calmed down a bit, I made my "Ehrlich is an idiot" sign a bit smaller. LOL
StevenW February 16th, 2006, 04:38 AM I think that O'Malley will win the next Governer's race. His "charming" personality along with his "conviction" make him a very strong force to reckon with.
StevenW February 16th, 2006, 05:16 AM Check out what Wikipedia says about our 414 Light Street!
In the early part of the 21st Century, Baltimore is undergoing a major building spree in the downtown area, specifically in the Inner Harbor East district. Earning the nickname "Crane City, USA," its skyline will extend further outward and upward in the next few decades. A New Jersey-based builder is proposing a new hotel/condominium complex that will be the city's new tallest building, esimated to be over 700ft tall.
:eek2: OVER 700 FT. TALL!!! :eek2: How do THEY know? :?

wada_guy February 16th, 2006, 03:19 PM Baltimore's Oldest Mall May Become Baltimore's Newest Mall
This is from a shopping center trade group site called Commercial Property News. I heard that Target is one of the box stores (Today's Daily Record).
February 15, 2006
By Michael Fickes, Mid-Atlantic Correspondent
General Growth Properties Inc. reportedly wants to add two anchor stores and a new big box store to the oldest enclosed mall in Baltimore. Opened in 1956, Mondawmin Mall (pictured) lost its only department store anchor, Sears, back in 1973 as rising crime in the area depressed the Mall's business. Now General Growth hopes to bring the mall back.
"We are enthusiastic about the business potential of our location in Baltimore, and we certainly have every intention of improving the property and keeping it fresh," a spokesperson for General Growth told CPN this afternoon. The spokesperson declined to discuss specific plans for anchor stores and big box stores.
The Rouse Co. developed Mondawmin Mall in 1956 and renovated it once, in 1982. General Growth took over the property after acquiring Rouse last year. The current center spans 454,000 square feet and hosts 145 stores. The population of the trading area is 382,592 and is projected to decline to 365,522 within five years. Average household income for the area is $42,539.
wada_guy February 16th, 2006, 03:26 PM Hilton Hotels Corporation Announces Hilton Baltimore Convention Center Hotel
This is from HospitalityNews.net
I didn't realize that this building is actually 883,000 sq. feet big. That's big!
BALTIMORE | Hilton Hotels Corporation (NYSE:HLT) announced today the start of construction on the Hilton Baltimore, a 20-story, 756-room hotel, located in the Baltimore Inner Harbor, attached via a sky bridge to the Baltimore Convention Center and adjacent to Camden Yards. Hilton Hotels Corporation will manage the hotel under a long term management agreement for the City of Baltimore, through the Baltimore Hotel Corporation, the developer for the project. The design builder is Hensel Phelps Construction Co. and the hotel has been designed by RTKL Associates. Completion and opening is scheduled for summer 2008.
"In collaboration with the City of Baltimore, we are thrilled to be able to announce the start of construction on this important project," says Ted Ratcliff, Senior Vice President, Hilton/Doubletree Eastern Region, Hilton Hotels Corporation. "With a fabulous location tied into the Baltimore Convention Center, upscale Hilton amenities, and a variety of leisure and dining opportunities in the hotel and surrounding neighborhood, the Hilton Baltimore will help boost Baltimore's status as a prime destination for national conventions."
The development of the Hilton Baltimore was funded by the sale of $300.9 million of revenue bonds issued by the City of Baltimore. The hotel will be constructed and managed in alignment with the city's diversity initiatives, and the hotel will feature 883,000 square feet of interior space, including 756 guest rooms. This is the largest number of rooms offered by any one hotel in Baltimore. The hotel will boast a 25,000 square foot grand ballroom - the city's largest - and a 15,000 square foot junior ballroom; an additional 22,000 square feet of flexible function space; three food and beverage outlets; a fitness center, and a business center. Retail space will be included. Located on Pratt Street, between Paca and Howard Streets, the hotel will be in walking distance to all the Inner Harbor amenities and attractions.
"This project is a great addition to Baltimore's tourism offerings, enabling us to attract the kind of large conventions to the city which currently cannot be accommodated," says M.J. "Jay" Brodie, Chairman of the Baltimore Hotel Corporation. "The new hotel and surrounding grounds will provide first-class lodging services to Convention Center guests, business and leisure visitors, and to the residents of the City of Baltimore."
The Baltimore Area Convention and Visitors Association (BACVA) also supports the project. According to Jeff Hungate, BACVA's chief operating offer, "It is clear that conventioneers want to come to Baltimore. The new hotel will allow us to bring more visitors to our great city."
