Please accept my apologies if either this has been asked and answered many times before, or I'm posting in the wrong place, but I have a question:

I have recently aquired an appartment in City Island, and have seen all the original plans, etc. for the site.. I notice there was a proposed footbridge which has not been completed.

Does anyone know is this is still planned? If so, when this is likely to be built?

Many thanks for any response.

Aaron

I understand that the bridge is still planned, though it will not be built until Wellington Place (opposite side of river) is nearing completion.
Apparently they need to agree on what type of bridge to build and also exactly where it will go.
I did hear from town planner that the existing old stone railway bridge will be used in part though this won't be the main pedestrian bridge.
There are issues over services that cross the river at this point, whether they will be incorporated or re-routed or whether the bridge will be built around them.

This information has been gleaned from various discussions over the last few months, so at best can only be 50-60% accurate.

IMO the bridge HAS to be built. The development is suffering because it isn't in terms of the level of desirablilty (vis prices) of the apartments for both rent & sale.

that sounds right to me. My parents are in the Civic Trust and asked Kevin Grady about the bridge, to which he replied that the developers have backed out of their commitment and gave the council a couple of hundred thousand pounds to relieve themselves of the responsibility. I understand the money will be spent once the council are ready.

Its a moot point really, because where is it going to go? The currently demolished site of the Aireside retail huts on the riverside or the backside of the MSCP behind the YEP. I think they will wait until the next phases of Wellington Place get going.

Sorry about that, as you've only got the choice of the canal path to the bridge or Canal Basin, or a wander along the Inner Ring Road past the YEP. Not the most salubrious journey to glitzy city centre apartments. Give it time though, am sure something will materialise, just not anytime soon.

Incidently two further bridges over the river and canal are planned, one from Whitehall Riverside to the canal path, and another from the canal path to the front of the Green Bank development on Globe Road. The latter will probably be the first to appear and both will aid access to the entire riverside.

P.S. Welcome, and any photos of the city / surrounding environs from City Island would be most welcome.........

Thanks for both your posts guys..

Yes, the accessibility is the only downside really. When I first looked round the site i noticed two large black blocks which I later learnt were in the exact location of one end of the footbridge on the plans..

I was wondering if these were foundations for the bridge laid during the building phase to limit disruption when the bridge is erected? You'll forgive my lack of knowledge on building techniques and/or my apparent lack of appreciate as to what constitutes 'art', if these are actually just decorative!

I move in on the 16th, and will happily supply some pictures then - all though only from the lowly 4th floor!

Cheers,

Aaron

If I were an original purchaser of a City Isle apartment I would be hopping mad about this bridge - or lack of it. It was featured in all the publicity about the development and was part of the claim of its easy accessibility within walking distance of the city centre.

Yes, It's not great.. but I'm sure it saved me a few quid to be honest.

The Canal tow path is fairly decent, although will be bad in poor weather, and rather shifty at night I would imagine.. and although around the loop and onto Wellington Street is hardly a picturesque journey, its not that bad.

Agree that I would have been seriously upset if I'd paid for an apartment ahead of completion and then had no bridge.. Lets hope it comes soon rather than later though!

Looks like the bridge is outside of the City Island development and not between the 2 builfings where the path leads to and the supposed foundations are!
