View Full Version : Walsall Waterfront
hammerb24 January 16th, 2006, 05:17 PM A few things going on up the M6, info from the AdvantageWM site
• Darlaston - High quality logistics operations and state-of-the-art distribution centres on a huge site straddling the M6. The scheme has the potential to create between 2,500 and 4,500 jobs over two phases.
• Waterfront – The ambitious £180 million-plus flagship regeneration project that will create a new ‘quarter’ on 17 acres of currently derelict land, with more than 650 designer homes, ‘green’ offices and public art alongside the canal and Town Wharf. This project is an Urban Splash project.
• New Gallery Square – A vibrant, exciting new square, home to the new creative industries, with restaurants and café-bars. It could also see a new library, museum, hotel, or some combination of all three and will link with the iconic New Art Gallery and Waterfront.
• Office Corridor – A series of office developments proposed for the Littleton Street/ Blue Lane corridor to meet the needs of 21st century business. A major opportunity beckons with Fujitsu soon to have a significant presence in the town.
• Business, Learning and Retail Campus – A major transformational regeneration project incorporating the creation of a Business and Learning Campus anchored by the new Walsall College of Arts & Technology and including major retail investment by Tesco.
• Digbeth/George Street – Substantial development and refurbishment at the southern end of High Street will provide a major focus for shoppers and anchor this end of the town centre. A new ASDA superstore is set to open on the former Sainsbury’s site, with city living apartment schemes with ground floor niche shopping proposed for both sides of George Street.
• Bradford Place – A major re-modelling incorporating upgraded bus facilities, improved links to the railway station, all within a new civic space centred on the Cenotaph.
• Canalside Communities – Significant new, sustainable communities will merge with existing ones to form an almost unbroken chain of residential clusters between the town centre from Wolverhampton Road through Reedswood and beyond to Leamore.

Latest News - Press Release
‘Amazing week for Walsall’ as £190 million schemes win planning consent and new ASDA opens - 26 June 2007
The chairman of Walsall Regeneration Company (WRC) has hailed ‘one amazing week for Walsall’ as planning consent was granted for two major development projects and the town’s new ASDA superstore opened for business.
On Monday (25 June) Walsall Council planners backed the £140 million redevelopment of the Manor Hospital that will see outdated buildings replaced with state-of-the-art facilities.
At the same meeting, they also granted consent for the £50 million Waterfront South, an eye-catching scheme near the iconic New Art Gallery that will create 334 canalside homes, along with offices, restaurants and café bars.
The doors have also opened at the town’s new £25 million ASDA store, part of the regeneration of the ‘St Matthew’s Quarter’ in the south east of the town centre.
Ben Reid, chairman of WRC and chair of Walsall Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “It seems incredible that less than two years after launching our Prospectus for Growth - WRC’s ‘masterplan’ - the regeneration of Walsall has progressed so rapidly.
“ASDA is open. The ring road is being greatly improved. A new Walsall College is underway as part of a £100 million business and learning campus, with a new Tesco planned. And £70 million of proposals for homes, shops and offices at Waterfront North, including new truly iconic buildings, have already been approved.
“Now with planning consent given for the Manor Hospital and Waterfront South, being developed by Jessup’s, there’s a further £200 million of development on the way.
“It is a massive vote of confidence in the town and a real boost to the economy and well-being of the borough. Coupled with ASDA opening, this has been one amazing week for Walsall.”
WRC chief executive Dr Peter Cromar said that for a council committee to be dealing with £190 million of planning applications in an afternoon ‘has to be pretty unique in the UK’.
The regeneration company has been working closely with developers to ensure the schemes include skills and employment training for local people, as well as providing opportunities for Black Country firms to supply goods and services.
In line with its role in ‘ringmastering’ Walsall’s physical regeneration, WRC is also ensuring the major schemes coming through work together rather than in isolation.
“For these two new developments it is important there is a strong public realm element; public art, lighting, signage, street furniture and planting that links them to create an attractive and safe route from the hospital through Waterfront South to Urban Splash’s Waterfront North scheme and on into the town centre.”
Dr Cromar said creating a vibrant and prosperous Walsall, where people wanted to invest, work, live and spend their leisure time had a key role to play in delivering a resurgent Black Country.
He said: “The Waterfront projects will create nearly 500 canalside homes, along with 180,000 sq ft of high quality offices that will attract new commercial businesses to the town and be complementary to Birmingham.
“Together with the other transformational projects in our Prospectus for Growth, they will make a significant contribution to delivering the Black Country Study which emphases the creation of four strong strategic centres, one of which is Walsall.
“Following this latest demonstration of confidence in Walsall, the regeneration company is clearly keen to encourage other investors to follow the commitment made by Urban Splash and by Jessup.
“We would encourage others with good, creative ideas, particularly around the hotel and leisure sectors, to get in touch.”

Biosonic August 24th, 2007, 10:44 AM Blimey mk - you've been plundering the old threads!
The Urban Splash one has got PP we are just waiting for them to start! IMO Walsall has the most cohesive idea of regen out of all our towns - and they have a good town centre to start with in the first place. It's a pity that part of their plans have been lost with the fire at Shannon's Mill :(
flying tackle August 24th, 2007, 12:55 PM well the skatepark is going next friday...so i can assume it will be starting in the near future
woodhousen August 25th, 2007, 06:33 PM one thin that iu shocking bout this development is the scale of it... its large scale for most cities, let alone a town like wasal
Erebus555 August 25th, 2007, 06:36 PM It's about time Walsall got something like this though - it is need of some love! It's been a while since I last visited Walsall properly and it wasn't the most desirable of places at all. It's developments like this that Walsall needs!
U475 Foxtrot April 22nd, 2008, 08:03 PM There's a nice model of Urban Splash's Walsall Waterfront at Fort Dunlop. Sorry they're not the greatest pics

Nacho April 22nd, 2008, 08:11 PM I like the look of that .That area needs an injection of colour too !
Biosonic April 22nd, 2008, 08:11 PM I like it!

Urban Splash is working alongside Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council and Advantage West Midlands to spearhead the comprehensive redevelopment of this 17 acre site in Walsall town centre.
Walsall Housing Group Offices
Fronting the canal, Joule are designing this six storey concrete framed building for the Walsall Housing Group. The building incorporates a dramatic centrally positioned concrete circulation drum through which the structure derives its stability and a 4 storey cantilevered box over the canal

Waterfront South
Staffordshire based developer Jessup has submitted planning application for a mixed-use canal-side development in Walsall, West Midlands. The £65m scheme, called Waterfront South, is designed by SP Faizey Architects and will consist of 360 apartments, a 4800 sq m office block and other commercial space for offices, restaurants and cafes. The development, which is next to Urban Splash's Walsall Waterfront and the New Art Gallery Walsall, will also include canal-side amenity improvements and a pedestrian bridge over the canal.

Walsall Parking Hedge, Walsall
As part of the Alsop master plan for the Walsall Waterfront site, Joule are designing this 200m long, 8 storey linear building housing commercial units and car parking to serve the whole development. Natural ventilation to the car park levels is provided through a fully planted facade.

Engels April 22nd, 2008, 09:14 PM I love the parking hedge, very innovative.
Anybody know any timescales for any of this starting?
Nacho April 22nd, 2008, 09:23 PM Good finds there !some nice stuff there .Although that building looks attractive for parking ,I fear long buildings as they act as walls .I hope to be proved wrong though .

Smileyface June 1st, 2008, 09:15 PM Nice one Feltip. I should really be on to this taking photos, giving reports etc. instead of posting photos of ducks - oh well!
LDN_EUROPE June 1st, 2008, 09:17 PM alrrrroyyt am ya?!!! tHAt looks bloomin greayt!
I know this town well. Actually the built environment in Walsall is very nice these days but it's still a very deprived area.
Smileyface June 1st, 2008, 09:29 PM LDN's right! I took some photos from the Art Gallery last year which shows the area as it is now (a few of the buildings have been flattened now) and the potential it has. Looking at Feltip's photo of the model: the Art Gallery is at the extreme right of the photo and the viewpoint (of my photo, from the Art Gallery) is right to left looking along the canal wharf towards where it joins the main canal - some apartments already built there.

LDN_EUROPE June 1st, 2008, 09:34 PM Smiley - don't know if you're being sarcastic or really agreeing with me. I mean most of the town centre is nice now. The art gallery and some of the canal, the bus station, the law court, the area round the bars etc. The paving etc is nice and many of the old building have been cleaned up. The photos you have shown of the rest of the canal obviously need to be improved and that is exactly what this scheme will do. It will look alrrrroyyyt am it?
Smileyface June 1st, 2008, 09:44 PM No, I'm agreeing with you. The town centre and the town itself has come on leaps-and-bounds in the last couple of decades but this area has always been a bit uggghh - obviously the New Art Gallery has helped and, indeed, the new shopping area across the road but if you catch the 529 bus to Wolvo you can see, from the top deck of this bus, where the late 90's/early 2000's development was and where it ended! there are a few pockets of niceness, like the new apartments between the main canal and Pleck road, but apart from them it was bleak till this project started (it still looks bleak now but least we know it won't be for long).
I've lived in Walsall all my life and this is not the only major development going on in the town: someone needs to give me a good kick up the arse to actually go out and photograph some of this stuff...I live in the town centre so no excuses really!
Nacho June 1st, 2008, 10:02 PM I'm looking forward to all this .
LDN_EUROPE June 2nd, 2008, 08:27 AM I always think tham little terraced 'ouses (actually workshops) near the stayyytion (between the station and pleck road) could be don up a rrooyyt treat.

Actually, if you read Boy George's autobiography (which I, erm, have :shifty:) you'll see that in the late 70s before he became famous, Boy George spent some time living in a flat above shops in Walsall town centre!

Quite true Butterfield ; as you walk under The Overstrand towards the church ,his house was on the left .I think it was in the same street as the old art college .:)
Butterfield June 4th, 2008, 01:59 PM Have you read the book too? :sly: Boy George also sang or DJ'd at a hotel in Kingswinford near Dudley around that time, so my dad says. But anyway, back on topic... :|

I said hello to Boy george in the Que Club once and yes, he did used to live in Walsall as did his friend Martin Degville who fronted Sigue Sigue Sputnik: and moving on........
This is where the old Arboretum Island used to be. It's now the most complex set of traffic lights I've ever seen! They've only recently opened up and pedestrians - trying to cross the roads - and motorists alike all looked completely lost: it's an improvement though apparently:)

van heckler September 17th, 2008, 02:43 AM Doubts on canal work as jobs set to be axed
http://www.expressandstar.com/2008/09/17/doubts-on-canal-work-as-jobs-set-to-be-axed/
The £180 million Walsall Waterfront transformation was today placed in doubt after the firm behind the scheme was forced to axe jobs.
A worker for developers Urban Splash told the Express & Star the firm had said they would no longer be needed for the canalside project.
The Manchester-based company has 280 staff, including a significant number in the West Midlands, and was involved in high-profile schemes including Birmingham’s landmark Rotunda and Fort Dunlop developments.
A spokeswoman for the firm today said it remained “committed” to the Walsall Waterfront project, but was unable to say when work might get under way.
Work on the scheme was meant to begin in earnest this autumn and underground work to secure foundations at the proposed site has already been carried out.
Councillor Sean Coughlan said: “It will be a real blow if this is faltering.”
Lisa Ashurst, from Urban Splash, said employees would be consulted “on a number of job losses arising from the continued deterioration in the UK economy”.
“The company has held off job cuts as long as possible, however it is not alone in facing challenges as a result of wider economic circumstance.”
More bad news for the region. :ohno:
U475 Foxtrot November 27th, 2008, 02:14 PM Moh Architects wins RIBA contest for Urban Splash’s Walsall waterfront regeneration
25 November, 2008
By Marguerite Lazell
Vienna-based Moh Architects has won the RIBA competition to design a new waterfront project in Walsall for Urban Splash.
The Lex project is the second phase of Urban Splash’s development of the site. The first phase has buildings by Will Alsop and Shed KM.
The contest was for a 0.9ha, mixed-use scheme bounded by two canals. Moh’s design has four low-rise buildings with commercial and residential units, plus public courtyards.
Moh’s Jörg Hugo said: “We are thrilled to have had our designs selected, and are really looking forward to working with Urban Splash, its partners, and the local community to refine the proposals.”
Moh beat Kirkland Fraser Moore, Piercy Conner Architects and a joint entry by Flacq and Featherstone Associates.
Moh's design from aboveNathan Cornish, Urban Splash’s managing director for the Midlands region, said: “The panel was looking for a concept which was right for Walsall, something which would not only complement the waterfront plans, but also come up with a vision that would work this waterfront site to its full potential.”
Cornish added: “There has to be a special mention of runners-up Kirkland Fraser Moore for their stunning entry, and of Type O, an exemplary young practice whose ingenuity and creativity is extremely exciting for the industry.”

Erebus555 November 27th, 2008, 05:52 PM I like the layout of the Type O design but I don't like the actual design of the towers. They look very bland and could do with some sort of detail to make them exciting.

ReissOmari February 11th, 2010, 02:32 AM This looks great, will really help Walsall because at the moment it looks like a shit hole.
Thats a bit harsh right, the new art gallery, the new college and the new ring road make that side of walsall look pretty good. With this scheme and the new tesco devolpment, Walsall council are doing well right now to improve the city.
Smileyface February 14th, 2010, 12:51 AM Walsall has a better track record of getting major projects underway than its larger neighbour up the road though obviously they're on a less grander scale and there isn't the NIMBY equation to deal with. Roads get widened (A34 up to great barr and the new internal ring road), hospitals get built (manor hospital rebuild), the town colleges and universities rebuilt and numerous improvements in the town centre. On the outskirts the notorious Coalpool/Goscote estate is being demolished and rebuilt and new, swish hotels are popping up around Bescot and jct 10
Thanks for the video Nacho. This will vastly improve an already vibrant town centre and I will try to keep a photo account of its construction.....and Brummyboy, your throw away comments makes you sound no better than the ill informed, brainless Southerners who throw similar abuse at Birmingham through naive notions they adhere to and believe.
Biosonic February 15th, 2010, 02:53 PM Walsall's actually got a pleasant town centre. A bit rough around the edges but not bad.
morestoreysplease February 15th, 2010, 07:06 PM The Ring Road goes through some lovely salubrious suburbs towards the centre and some of those Victorian buildings are really handsome. Great stuff Walsall - can't wait for all this to be completed.
JayPeeDee February 15th, 2010, 09:23 PM This is brilliant for Walsall. This is going next to the art gallery, right?
I think the art gallery is excellent however am not too keen on the new college which looks more like a warehouse imo.

Erebus555 March 9th, 2010, 10:32 PM It might be worth creating a new thread for that particular phase in question, and then moving it to the construction forum because this thread really concerns the entire scheme which is huge. :)

Erebus555 March 20th, 2010, 06:31 PM OK, I'm getting my bearings now... This is Waterfront South which is being built by Jessup Developments. I'll create a separate thread for this so that this one can be for general Walsall Waterfront news - seeing as the North section by Urban Splash will be more exciting. :)
ReissOmari March 20th, 2010, 07:06 PM Theres a REALLY nice feature inside the college, i'll post it on here later when i get my phone lead
Nacho March 20th, 2010, 07:07 PM Thanks a lot for the photos Smiley .As you say , the new college looks disappointing especially when you see what is going up in Bournville and West Bromwich .That's the first time I've seen the ring- road ; if I remember rightly there was a biker's pub (Little John maybe ) that had to go because of it .That's the first time of seen the back entrance of Walsall Station (first pic) ; a huge site there .
Erebus555 March 20th, 2010, 07:18 PM And as promised: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=53760349

The new road is now on Google Street View if you wanna take a little trip down there virtually lol. I think its really nice the road furniture and all makes its more welcoming if that makes sense?

I bet Nacho hasn't been to Walsall since the old Arboretum island was dug up? This is what's in its place now and it took quite a while to get used to. This is approaching the junction from the Broadway and if you go forward it looks like the Google driver got a bit confused too:nuts:

Part two of Walsall transformation under way
http://www.expressandstar.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/walsallwaterfront.jpg
The second phase of the multi-million pound transformation of Walsall Waterfront to create more than 150 new apartments is now under way.
The first signs of the redevelopment have started to spring up as the next set of homes are to be built off Wolverhampton Street during the next 15 months.
It comes as the first stage of the £65 million Waterfront South scheme nears completion on time despite poor winter weather — with the first homes expected to be finished by the end of next month.
A total of 164 apartments are planned for the second phase and will be split into two blocks. They are expected to be finished around the middle of 2012.
Ian Jackson, from developers Jessups, said: “It is going to give Walsall a whole new quarter.
“It will allow people to live in the centre of the town.”

Brummyboy92 February 21st, 2011, 12:39 AM Great news, we have had no pictures of this for a while might have to go get some soon. However if I'm hounest its not great, the choice in colours are horrible and the exposed metal makes it look unfinished. People will see what I mean when I get some pics.
Brummyboy92 March 12th, 2011, 12:39 PM Heres a few pictures from this.
