This thread is about projects on the new Prague City Ring. First of all, here are some maps.

Here is fundamental map (http://www.udi-praha.cz/sluzby/dtdmapa4.jpg)

and this is small map of Prague basic communications, the inner communication circle is Prague Ring. The green line is outlook for the future, grey and light red line is already in use (Tunnel Mrázovka and Zlíchov-Radlická section were opened in 2004), thick red line represents three connected tunnels which are either under construction or being prepared now. Total lenght of Prague inner Ring will be 33 km, in use is 15,8 km today.

I like the fact that they went with tunnels, rather than fly pass or overpass, which are ugly and look out of place..

it is brilliant work, very nice... :okay:

Yes you're right, commies wanted to build normal highway and demolished half of Smíchov district instead of building the Mrázovka tunnel, thanks God they're gone.

And I'm lookinkg forward to not so far future, best and longest tunnels in Prague are being prepared.

Zlichovsky Tunel, 200 meters (finished 2002)

Driving north out of Barrandov Bridge the inner ring goes next to the Vltava river and then through 200 meter Zlichovsky Tunnel which cuts under the rail tracks.

Zlichovsky tunnel is the short one on the left side of this image, on the right is the Mrazovka Tunnel.

Construction of north-west part of Prague City Ring has just started. Total length will be 5895 m of which 5012 m runs in tunnels.
Construction includes several underground intechanges, new bridge over Vltava river in Troja district and underground parking area for 855 cars in Letná park. On the west ending this part of city ring connects Malovanka interchange, which is u/c since 2004 and continuos 15.8 km od city ring (Strahovský tunnel, Mrázovka tunnel, Zlíchovský tunnel, Barrandovský bridge and Jižní Spojka).
Realisation is expected between 2007 - 2011 (more phases, the earliest completed in 2009), total estimated costs up to $1.45 billion.

Why is the speed limit only 70 km/h? Couldn't it be at least 80?

kokpit
April 7th, 2007, 11:51 PM
I'm not sure if it will be only on few parts, but generally it's due to safety since projected traffic intensity it's bigger than on motorways out of city and there will be also underground interchanges which are not very safe...
And I know that biggest traffic capacity of any road is reached somewhere near 60-70 kmph so 70 kmph speed limit doesn't decrease max traffic intensity of the road, it just slow down cars going there out of peak hours in thin traffic.

Úžasný projekt a skvelé vizualizácie!

Yes, it's quite difficult, mainly for lorries which are not allowed to enter inner city area. You have to use City Ring (inner ring) which is extremely overloaded and radial roads.

so, follow the red thick line

^ Wow, very nice, thanks! :) I thought it would be sth like that, but since these are (all) 4-lane roads (sorta expressways?), I didn't think they would be so congested, I thought the Prague's motorways/expressways were pretty easy to bypass the city.

Will the existing 4-lane parts of the (future) R1 all be widened into 6 lanes, so the entire R1 would be a 6-lane expressway?

May 13th, 2007, 07:19 PM
^ The existing 4-lanes IMHO no in the nearest future, because after completion of entire system (including inner city ring) they will be sufficient enough. However more loaded parts of R1 motorway will be built as 6-lanes. For example the part of R1 from D5 crossing to R7 crossing was built with 6 lanes already.

My photos of R1 I took near Ruzyne airport (close to R7-R1 crossing) at 2007-4-17

Yeah, thats the good point, there were discussions about it here if not to build wider tunnels right away. The result is that ascendent tunnel tube will have three lanes and descendent two.

When I look at these transportation works (road and rail) I am agog with envy and I wonder how they are paid for. Here in Australia we have twice the population of Česko and our biggest cities are 3 to 4 million and we pay 20 to 40% tax (according to income) and the government says there is not enough money.

In Sydney we have a slow old railway system built in 1920s. We only have some motorways because private companies build and own them and we pay expensive tolls to use them. And we can't say the money goes to schools and hospitals because those are worse than in Česko. So how do you do it guys? What's the public financing system over there?

(But we have nice beaches here and the Pacific Ocean so you guys can envy that! :okay: )

^ quite surprising you complain about infrastructure in such rich country/continent as Australia.
There are many differences, Europe is more densely inhabited and lorries go from east to the west and reversely, we are transit country so we need these roads and railroads (our infrstructure is still underdeveloped compared with western Europe). Australia is leisure country, you have big cities but not so many traffic I guess. And of course, airports are much more important in Australia than here because of the long distances betwen cities.

Here apparently taxes are not enough for big infrastruture projects so they used loans for years (it took 60 years to pay off loan on Sydney Harbour Bridge!). Now they are going for public private partnerships (PPPs) where a private company or consortium builds the infrastructure and charges a toll for say 30 years and then (hopefully) after that ownership will go back to the government.

So how does CR (or any other central European country) pay for these projects? Is it all from taxes, is there EU funding....? Or do you take loans too? I realise it is hard catering for traffic transiting across the European continent so you have to cater for other countries also.

Also interesting I believe that Prague city council funds the metro and tramway. Here no Australian city Council would be wealthy enough for that. Only Brisbane does this and that is only bus services. Airlines here are important for passengers sure but freight is by truck and train. Private cars are biggest transport in cities unfortunately and public transport is poor. Of course we have 1000 km between big cities and biggest cities are 50-60 km across but I'm sure these factors are not huge contributers to infrastructure cost.

So is CR a rich country or what's the secret?

Everyone does the same. We use local funds,EiB loans and EU money. In Budapest, gov pays like 20% of the new metro, hopefully EU will pay 50-75%,and the city 5%. We build 100km-ish highways yearly, and that goes for almost every country in the region. I believe trams and buses are paid only by cities, maybe gov.

In all CE countries it's similar. The money are from taxes, EU funds, PPP or simply loan. For example right now Slovak government anounnces 5 billion EUR PPP highway project. Other parts of highways are financed from taxes and EU funds. There are no secrets.

Environmental movements always opposed highways (because of air pollution, fair enough) but now they are opposing railway projects too. Crazy! Plus people do not want infrastructure going near their houses (even underground) so politicians try to please everybody to win votes. This is a universal phenomenon I guess! Anyway you are very lucky getting all that infrastructure and your public transport is a dream.

I am wondering too. I hope your greens do not go to the lunatic extreme they do here. The greens object to the coal-fired power stations used to generate the electricity (these are located in the countryside not the city). The other objectors are what we call NIMBYs ("not in my back yard") - they don't want any infrastructure near their houses. All it achieves is it ties political debate up in knots for years. But now I think there is the beginning of a reaction against it - Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane (the biggest cities) are 30-50 years behind in transport infrastructure development and now it causes a big cost to the economy, so government is panicking. It is a good lesson in the need for proper planning.

Oh yes, dark greens(as we call them)now object wind power plants, because they can kill birds. they object nuclear(if coal and oil bad,and renewable is not at sufficient advanced technology, then what else can be used in a flat country?)They object the ringroad around Budapest, the traffic this way goes through the city, poisoning approx 2 million inside, and like 500 thousand outside. In the countryside, they are not really active. We almost lost EU funds(90% of total cost) on the eastern section of the ringroad, because they rejected it totally.
I dont know what are they like around us,but here, they dont do anything that could help, and object critical investments.
The coal plants here started investing in biomass reactors,so greens are not that harsh against them. with subways,we are good. Only surface infrastructure needs land to be bought, since the country(gov)owns everything beneath. Basically, you buy the surface, and some air above, but you cant really object what is built below the house.

Similarly government here can do anything under your land - they can even buy your land off you by compulsion if needed for infrastructure. However the problem is "democracy" (ha ha, how ironic!). Every development has to have public comment and the greens and nimbys are educated and organised and even though they are a minority they can do a lot to thwart or make difficult a development. And politicians are worried about losing votes so they give in or compromise.

A good example is one new railway line in Sydney (one of only three little bits in 60 years!!). It was going to cross a river by bridge over a deep natural valley. The greens influenced them to build it underground under the river so it will now have very steep gradients either side which will use more electric power for trains - and a station under a university is now cancelled because the line is now too deep! Similarly same people have stopped the major motorway from Sydney to the north joining the ring road motorway, as a result huge traffic, trucks and everything goes into narrow streets with houses and standstill traffic jams. This is what we live with here and I hope such silliness does not come your way in CE. Be warned!

Sorry to take up space talking about Australian issues in your section - Australian section of this forum has more details. But I find the comparison very helpful because Australia is probably a similar size economy to CE countries - not huge like US, UK or Germany. So thanks for the discussion, the exchange of ideas is good.

Thanks for the maps RawLee. My map of Prague shows a ring road under development at least. But you have good public transport you see. Here something like 80-85% of peak hour travel is by car. We started off with English style cities (terraced housing) and good tramway systems. Then after 1940s we turned into big American style cities with spread out housing and everyone in cars. This is our problem, you are lucky in that regard.

So its a traffic jam competition is it? I lived in London for a couple of years and travelled around W and S Europe by car so know all about traffic thanks! And by comparison we have pretty bad ones in Australia too but admittedly not as big a vehicle fleet as Europe.

Not really a competition, since(I only know Budapest)55-60% of traffic is cars, and 45-40% is MT. What do you mean by southern-europe? the newly joined countries lack good(if not basic)highway networks, trains are slow, and MT isnt the best either.
Yep,Prague is building its ringroad, since this thread is about it. Budapest also doing it,next year, only some 20-30kms will be missing. I dont know about Bratislava,I think they are doing cross-city highway. One good aspect in the "poor" Warsaw Pact was that mass transit building was encouraged.

In Bratislava is 60% by mass transport and and 40% by cars. Simply people living further from the city center use cars an people living closer MT. Yes there is "bypass" alomost in the city center which is completed. On the map is missing section from Lamač to Karlova Ves. There is planned outer bypass as well but it should be finnished in 2015.

Not really a competition,.
Just making a light-hearted joke here RawLee, you are welcome to the worst traffic jams! :) By S Europe I mean Spain, Italia, Greece.

The other factor of interest for comparison is that part of the problem in Australian cities is big planning mistakes from the 1950s and later. They allowed factories, shopping centres, universities, schools etc to be built away from railway lines so you can only get to them by car (or bus). So travel patterns in cities now are very much cross-country rather than to CBD and central area. People travel from their houses to many different destinations so this encourages use of their cars. Planners are realising this error (should have been obvious!) and now they are trying to concentrate development near railways or build railways/busways to existing scattered development. Not very efficient.

Do you have this same problem developing over there or is employment etc more concentrated?

I dont know about the other 2 countries, but here, development happens around mass transit lines, since that rises its value. Or old buildings are torn down, and built upon, just in my district, half of the buildings in the centre are new. Mass transit is built too,gov just decided to fund(EU) the extension of 2 long tramlines, along with the new metro. In 3 rural cities,one-one additional tramline will be built. If development happens outside mass transit lines,I suppose the nearest bus' route is modified,so that it gets a new stop in the area. Luckily, the operator of MT slowly realizes that people dont like to change routes more than a few times, and starting to develop cross-city routes.

Great photos! I have a few questions about the proposed bridge connecting T'roger with Holly-V.

1) When is the proposed start/finish date? Will it be opened prior to the tunnel?

2) Will they be replacing the current tram bridge?

3) Will there be a new road built hugging the river in the direction of Kralupy Nad Vltavou, to eleviate the traffic on Trojska ulice?

Much appreciated.

HiRazor
November 14th, 2007, 12:05 PM
^^

1) According to this (http://www.tunelblanka.cz/informace-o-projektu.php?action=4) page the construction is sheduled to begin on the 1st of february 2008 and completion is planned on June 30 2010. So the bridge should indeed be opened a couple of months before tunnels.

2) According to the same source, the tram track on the new bridge should be operational since March 31 2010. The old tram bridge will be dismantled and removed soon afterwards.

3) As far as I know no. There are some suggestions/ideas to build a tramway track running over the currently built flood defence bank to serve the zoo, but nothing beyond these has materialized so far.

Thanks for the answers HiRazor. Driving to work has turned into a bit of a ball-ache recently (with all the traffic waiting to get on to most barikadniku) so I eagerly await the arrival.

Aktron
November 27th, 2007, 05:33 PM
Ale to zklidní, ale v místě kudy budou auta projíždět (ta "ďoura" s křižovatkou) toho bude jezdit mnohem víc a mnohem rychleji. Možná to ty stěny utlumí, ale stejně mi to příjde takový divný. Místo tunelu bych spíš radši nechal zbourat tu chatovou osadu a postavil napůl krytou šestiproudou silnici v zářezu, kolem by byly parky (aby se vyrovnal ekologický deficit).

There's a page about future tunnels on Prague City Ring http://www.diamo.cz/hpvt/2006/stavby/P12.htm
Libenska spojka should be 1350m long of which 865m in tunnels, but it's not part of City Ring itself.

What I can't see in the pictures of the Libeň conjuction is where the extension of the R10 into Prague City - the Vysocanska Radiala - exactly hits the inner city ring at the Liben conjuction. Where exactly will the Vysocanska Radiale hit the inner city ring?

So ''spojka'' are Prague's internal roads (expressways ?) which connect City Ring (MO) with R1 ?

So ''spojka'' are Prague's internal roads (expressways ?) which connect City Ring (MO) with R1 ?

Spojka has many meanings but it always has to do sth with "connection" and in this case it also means simply connection or conjunction. For instance, the southern part of City Ring is called "Jižní spojka" which means Southern connection and among others you'll find a road called Kunratická spojka near between D1 and road 603 on southern end of Prague.

Connections between City Ring and R1 (Outer Ring) are in common called Radial Roads (radiála).

Hi guys,

I'm considering a short road trip in Germany, and also include western Czechia.

If I'm coming from the south through all those tunnels along the westside of downtown (that's the M0 right? Is it signed that way?), I'll exit onto road no. 7, not far from the Prague Castle. Are there any parking spaces near that exit that's easily accessible from road 6/7 near the castle that is in walking distance of downtown (max 2km)?

I'm only looking to park for like an hour or max. two hours, since i have been to Prague several times, though it looks nice to make a short stop there, walk around, recalling some memories etc, you know the deal.

I see that there are some large parking spaces around Strahov stadium, however i think they are too far from downtown. And i expect there to be on saturday, so it might be busy with tourists, so it can be hard to find a parking space?

Bobek_Azbest

^ There would be definitely more problems with parking on weekdays then on Saturday. I would choose from one of the following options:

Try my luck and find parking space at Pohořelec (http://www.mapy.cz/#x=132992384@y=135955264@z=15@mm=FP@sa=s@st=s@ssq=poho%C5%99elec,%20praha@sss=1@ssp=132992176_135948512_133006640_135961232) (paid parking in green zone, avoid the resident-only blue zones) or in the streets to the west (free parking).
Try my luck and find parking space in the streets SW of Újezd (http://www.mapy.cz/#x=133036096@y=135914560@z=14@mm=FP@sa=s@st=s@ssq=Loc:%2050%C2%B04'52.167%22N,%2014%C2%B024'16.438%22E@sss=1@ssp=133029536_135924880_133044000_135937600) (free parking there; the streets north of 'Vítězná' are resident-only). 'Janáčkovo nábřeží' could be the best bet here.
Park the car in the Tesco underground garage (http://www.mapy.cz/#x=133025440@y=135899744@z=15@mm=FP@sa=s@st=s@ssq=Loc:%2050%C2%B04'24.268%22N,%2014%C2%B024'6.017%22E@sss=1@ssp=133017728_135887648_133046848_135913184) (take the offramp and straight on the traffic lights after leaving 'Mrázovka' tunnel) and take a tram into the historical center. The parking is free up to three hours or so.

^^ Thanks :)

Another idea popped in my head, at the end of metro line B (yellow), there is this huge Tesco in Zličín, were parking is free (at least 5 years ago), right next to an expressway. That might be even better than trying to find a parking spot around downtown.

HiRazor
June 4th, 2008, 02:10 PM
In Zličín, Butovice etc., there's also a P+R car-park (http://www.dpp.cz/en/p-r-facilities/) where you can park your car for the price of either return or a one-day valid ticket on public transportation. The downside is, it takes half an hour to get to the downtown, so from your planned two hours you'd spend over one hour underground.

I'd go with the Smíchov Tesco (http://www.mapy.cz/#x=133028656@y=135900976@z=16@mm=F) option, It's free for 5 hours on weekends, pretty central and the entrance is just in front of the exit ramp from the MO.

Tip: on the 1st floor of the shopping mall, there's an exit (just past toilets) to the footbridge shown on the photomap in the link above. The footbridge links the mall with Sacre Coeur park, from where there is a nice view on the southern half of the city.

No dojde k určité redukci z 3+3 na 2+2 v této části.

Bobek_Azbest
August 19th, 2008, 08:21 AM
The problem is that nearly 100.000 cars passing the bridge everyday will spill into all the surrounding streets.

The technical problem is following:
The bridge was undergoing a scheduled maintenance since early July - the dilatation and the road surface was changed on the bridge, as they were damaged badly by the heavy traffic. Workers have discovered (on August 9th) that the supporting beam of the dilatation is damaged and displaced few centimeters below it's original position. The bridge was closed for trucks weighing >6 tons immediately in one direction, which already caused serious traffic jams. Now the beam will be put back into the position and fixed with concrete, and it's proper setting requires the closing of the bridge for all the traffic (because of vibrations).

The bridge was opened in December 1996...

Well, it wasn't that bad after all. Media literally scared most people off - this is how it looked on Jižní spojka approx. 3kms before the closed bridge at 5:30p.m. on Friday:

http://bobkovo.cz/img/ssc/DSC00011.JPG

No traffic at all, I just kept on going and got away with it  (mobile phone quality).

There were some jams on and around the main diversion route, but I managed to avoid them completely.

In your dreams only :) It is nice development but it is not even half of tunnel density of Barcelona. Only the Subway networks have more tunnels in Madrid, Paris, Berlin, London (etc.) then all tunnels in Prague. Anyway nice project

Měli by vrátit do původního stavu vše co komunisti zdevastovali a auta vyhnat z centra, proč asi stavíme městský okruh za desítky Mld Kč...

Another update (photos by Jan Mynařík), as of 22nd March - you can visit the complete photogallery at ceskedalnice.cz (http://foto.ceskedalnice.cz/vase-foto/090322-MO/index.html).

Letná
Overview: the construction slowly advancing toward the Královská obora tunnel portals. Contrary to what I have stated here earlier, the tunneling should also start from the Letná construction site this August, due to the delays caused by the cave-ins in Stromovka. The completed sections further away from the camera are almost covered now.
http://foto.ceskedalnice.cz/vase-foto/090322-MO/letna/slides/001.JPG

The biggest advancement can now be seen on the northern on/offramp (#4 and #1). This is probably caused by the need to finish works below Milady Horákové fast - trams should run again in July across Letná to Špejchar. The construction of the tracks (which should run somewhere along the white fence on the right side of the photo) should start soon.

Things starting to really shape up, this is underlying layer of concrete for the roof of the tunnel.

The depth of the excavation can be seen nicely here.

Before every "big digging" in Prague archeologists are the first on the construction sites... It means, that so called "emergency archeological survey" precedes constructions on any virtually important locality from archeological point of view. Prague basin is filled-up by archeosites, because here is continuous human presence and settlements from ca 25 000 years BC.

I believe I am not kidding but whenever I hear about European baseball, Netherlands, Italy and Czech rep. take the medals.

Btw. I have been always wondering of extensive 70,000+ spectator capacity sold-out stadiums for watching a sport where 90% of action happens in a little corner.

Japan and Baseball is fine. Latin America and baseball is fine. But how did the Czechs start to pick up bats and balls and play the summer game? Nothing to do in the hot Czech summer nights? :D

Holland was a pain in the ass in the world baseball classics.

Still amazing to see the Czechs are sporty.

Since the last visit in early April 2009 in the area MUK Vysočanská RADIAL x Building Not much has changed. Perhaps due to the construction of a parked construction technology changes.
