this thread on wilmington will focus on many of the neighborhoods west of i-95: cool springs, hedgeville, hilltop, and little italy. i am going to cover other neighborhoods in this area, such as trolley square, browntown, and wawaset park another time. these pictures are from last spring and summer.

a nun strolls through cool springs park on a warm sunday morning in the neighborhood of cool springs, located just west of i-95 near delaware avenue.

cool springs park again. the nun is still in the picture at the left, talking to a young black boy about his dog that he was walking.

one of the buildings for ing direct, with trinity episcopal church to the left. i-95 is in the foreground, underneath the delaware avenue eastbound exit ramp you see. the ing direct building here was built in the early 1980's in by chase bank, who came to town to take advantage of the financial center development act of 1981.

trinity episcopal church to the left, and the ing direct building on the right. the building is almost right next to i-95, and is clearly visible from i-95.

some houses in cool springs, located on park place. the performing arts center for ursuline academy, an all-girls catholic high school, is in the background.

some houses on sycamore street in hedgeville. hedgeville is one of the more diverse neighborhoods in wilmingotn from what i've seen. i would say that the neighborhood reflects the united states as a whole; the majority of the neighborhood is white, but several ethnicities, like italian, polish, and irish. blacks make up a large minority, at around the same percentage as blacks make in the united states (maybe a little bit more). catholics and protestants are about equal in this area, although i would say that there are more catholics than protestants here. the neighborhood also has a good mix of old people and younger families. hedgeville is a good place for everyone to fit in, and i think people with all sorts of personalities would enjoy living there.

some interesting houses on 9th street in the neighborhood of hilltop. these are the only houses i've seen in wilmington that are this style .

st. anthony of padua catholic church, at the corner of 9th & supont streets in the heart of little italy. obviously, this church was the center of the neighborhood, and functioned not only as a church, but as a community center for the italian catholics.

a small park at the corner of 8th and broom streets. the greek festival is held in this park in june.

walking northeast down scott street towards the italian festival, held each june. the italian festival is centered around the feast of st. anthony of padua, and st. anthony of padua catholic church holds the festival each year in celebration of the patron saint's feast day.

the inside of st. anthony of padua catholic church. being a catholic myself, i stopped into the church and said a quick prayer while i was at the italian festival one day. after all, it was the feast of st. anthony.

the outside of the church, with italian festival decorations adorning everything in sight.

one of the several beer tents at the italian festival. nothing like helping the church like drinking beer.

holy trinity greek orthodox church on broom street. they hold their greek festival each year in june, about a week before the italian festival. holy trinity church is only 3 or 4 blocks away from st. anthony of padua church, so the neighborhood sees a lot of business and activity in june.
