$1.2 billion project for pilgrims and belive it or not you will see some people saying that the Saudi government is not doing enough!!
huit January 18th, 2006, 10:05 PM Hopefully, we won't ever get to hear about accidents once this gets constructed... I've heard it'll take 3 years to complete, is that correct?
Riyadhi January 18th, 2006, 10:09 PM Phase one will be complete by next year. Phase two will take 2-3 years.
Skyline-BRN January 18th, 2006, 10:16 PM This project Looks Good. The cost is alot more than it looks tho, almost the euvialent budget of small city projects around the gulf!
Darth Shemp January 23rd, 2006, 07:42 AM Contractor Saudi Bin Ladin has started to demolish the disaster-prone Jamarat bridge in Mena, Saudi Arabia
and build a US $1.12 billion (SR4.2 billion) replacement on the site.
The move follows last week’s tragedy, when 360 pilgrims lost their lives in a stampede on the bridge, during the stoning ritual on the last day of the Hajj.
More 5000 construction workers have already started work on the project, which will take three years to complete.
And the Bin Ladin Group has already established a pre-cast concrete block plant nearby to supply the project.
“The first stage of the projected overhaul of Jamarat bridge in Mena has begun and will be completed and ready for next year’s Hajj,” said Osama Al Bar, who heads a government centre that helps organise the Hajj.
The first stage involves the construction of a two-storey bridge and an underground emergency exit.
The pilgrims were crushed at the eastern entrance of the bridge as they jostled to perform the stoning ritual in Mena, a narrow valley near the holy city of Makkah.
Around 2.5 million Muslims performed the Hajj this year, and the death toll was the worst since 1990, when 1426 people were killed in a stampede in a tunnel.
Bodies covered in white shrouds littered the Jamarat area, as medics tended to the injured on stretchers. The bodies were driven away in ambulances and refrigerated trucks.
Saudi security forces set up a tight cordon around the Jamarat bridge to control the crowds, as many pilgrims thronged to carry on stoning three walls in a symbolic casting out of the devil and rejection of temptation.
In 2004, 250 pilgrims were crushed to death at Jamarat bridge. A decade earlier, 270 were killed in a similar stampede.
The new bridge will have an air conditioning system and ambulances will be able to access both floors of the structure.
The ground and first level will be for pilgrims coming in from east Mena while the second level, will be for pilgrims coming from the Makkah side.
The third will be for those entering from north Mena, and the fourth level will be designated for use by pilgrims entering from south Makkah, along King Abdul Aziz Road.
huit January 23rd, 2006, 08:19 PM I don't mean to de-rail the topic but I was just wondering as to which company is bigger 'n richer - Emaar or Bin Laden Group? Am I trying to compare apple 'n oranges?
dave550 January 26th, 2006, 04:17 AM This project has to be done, so that inshalla when I go to Hajj I don't have to panic:)

In sheer experience and projects done so far, the BLG blows Emaar away, however with the recent boom in the UAE i think in real estate terms there are very few companies that can compete with EMAAR.
LordMarshall January 26th, 2006, 05:00 AM is there a picture of the new bridge?
*UofT* January 26th, 2006, 05:08 AM is there a picture of the new bridge?

Well, Emaar is a a real estate developer while Bin Laden Group is a construction company or a contractor. So, it is hard to compare.
LordMarshall January 26th, 2006, 07:48 PM Out of curiosity are u a Bosniak muslim?

Work on High-Tech Jamrat Project in Full Swing
P.K. Abdul Ghafour, Arab News
JEDDAH, 4 June 2006 — Work on the new high-tech Jamrat project is in its full swing to complete the first phase, which includes the basement, ground floor and first floor, before the upcoming Haj.
“We have already completed 30 percent of the first phase,” said Habeeb Zainul Abideen, deputy minister of municipal and rural affairs. He said about 8,000 employees from the Saudi Binladin Group, which won the SR4.2 billion contract last year, are working around the clock in order to complete the project before the next Haj, which begins in late December. The new Jamrat Bridge is designed to hold 250,000 pilgrims an hour.
The project was designed by the government as part of its efforts to avoid stampedes and crowding in the Jamrat area. In the past, hundreds of pilgrims have died performing the stoning ritual with 360 pilgrims losing their lives as a result of a massive stampede on the last day of the Haj last year.
“The new project includes two helipads which will help in the speedy evacuation of casualties in case of accidents. One of the six towers of the complex will have a large escalator to take ambulances to the top level of the bridge,” Zainul Abideen said.
The new structure will have 10 entrances and 12 exits distributed over the four levels plus the ground floor to accommodate pilgrims coming from different directions.
The ground and first floor will be used by pilgrims coming from the east of Mina, who accounts for the bulk of the crowd. The second level will be used mainly by pilgrims coming from the direction of Makkah, the third level by those coming from the north of Mina and new pilgrim camps and the fourth level by pilgrims coming from the south of Makkah through King Abdul Aziz Road.
There will be three main tunnels for transporting vehicles. These tunnels will be connected to service towers for use by garbage collectors, ambulances and other services. There will also be a tunnel to be used by special delegations and VIPs.
Construction of a six-lane tunnel north of the bridge has started. The builders say this tunnel will transport pilgrims from the east of Mina to its west and will be linked to the Souk Al-Arab and Souk Al-Jowhara roads.
To manufacture pre-cast concrete blocks and other building materials required for the project the Saudi Binladin Group has established factories in Bahra, near Jeddah.
Riyadhi June 4th, 2006, 11:08 PM I wish that we can get construction pictures. Must be amazing site with 8,000 construction workers there!

Roukaya19 October 1st, 2010, 02:16 AM Under construction Mina bridge collapses; African worker injured
September 30, 2010
MAKKAH – An African worker was injured Wednesday in the collapse of a pedestrian bridge under construction to link the fourth tier of the Jamarat Bridge to a Haramain Train station at Rabwat Al-Hadharim in Mina.
A crane installing a beam on the bridge became unbalanced, which caused the beam to fall on adjacent beams and eventually cause nine concrete pillars to fall over and the total collapse of the bridge, Dr. Habib Zain Al-Abideen, undersecretary at the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and chairman of the Central Administration for Development Projects at the holy sites, told Okaz/Saudi Gazette.
He said such it is challenging to maintain a 100-percent safety record in constructing mega-projects and added that precautionary measures and safety tools at the site helped reducing the severity of the incident.
Capt. Saleh Al-Olayyani, spokesman of the Civil Defense in Makkah, said the collapse occurred in Rabwat Al-Maghariba, located at the beginning of Mina, which led to the 30-meter concrete pillars falling over. He said the pillars were carrying the pedestrian bridge to the fourth floor.
Capt. Al-Olayyani said 16 specialist teams from the Civil Defense rushed to the scene and a technical engineering committee has been formed to determine the reasons behind the collapse and estimate the losses.

Roukaya19 October 2nd, 2010, 01:34 AM None hurt in accident on Jamrat Bridge site
By ARAB NEWS
Published: Oct 2, 2010 00:12 Updated: Oct 2, 2010 00:12
RIYADH: An accident in the metro rail construction site at the fifth floor of the Jamrat Bridge on Wednesday did not cause any loss of life, a statement of the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs said.
"A beam upset a crane and fell on some previously installed beams at the site of the Holy Sites rail that is connected to the fifth floor of the Al-Jamrat Bridge on Wednesday. The accident happened without causing any loss of life to the workers or materials," under-secretary in the ministry and head of the centralized administration for developmental projects Habib Zainul Abideen said in a statement to the Saudi Press Agency on Friday.
"The affected beams will be replaced and the works will be completed such that the pedestrian passage would be ready for use for pilgrims this Haj season," he said.
Such accidents are not unexpected while undertaking huge projects like this but it will by no means affect the progress of the project, he said.

JEDDAH: The fifth floor of the high tech Jamrat Bridge in Mina will be open to pilgrims this Haj season, the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs said Saturday.
“The opening of the fifth floor will facilitate the stoning ritual at Jamrat,” said Habeeb Zainul Abideen, deputy minister for municipal and rural affairs.
Abideen was addressing a conference on medicine attended by 500 delegates. He described Haj as the largest congregation of people in the world and highlighted the Saudi government’s efforts to avoid stampedes and other accidents during the annual event.
Abideen said the irresponsible behavior of some pilgrims causes problems not only for Saudi Haj managers, but also fellow Hajis. He urged all pilgrims to follow safety instructions.
There are 90 cameras around Jamrat to monitor the movement of pilgrims and prevent possible stampedes. These cameras will also enable Haj managers to assess how many pilgrims each floor of the bridge can hold.
“We have also arranged for vehicles to carry pilgrims with special needs to help them perform the stoning ritual without any difficulty,” he said.
Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki, spokesman for the Interior Ministry, spoke about new plans for crowd management at Jamrat as well as in the mataf, the circling area around the Holy Kaaba where pilgrims perform tawaf, and the masaa, the running area between Safa and Marwa where Hajis perform saie.
Out of the 2.5 million people who come for Haj every year, 700,000 pilgrims walk to the holy sites, he said, adding that 75,000 buses and other vehicles are used to transport the other pilgrims.
The Haram Mosque in Makkah can hold 700,000 worshippers, while the mataf can hold 53,000 and the masaa 118,000.
Dr. Ziyad Maimish, assistant undersecretary at the Health Ministry for preventive medicine, said the ministry would mobilize about 17,000 doctors, nurses and paramedical staff and 39 mobile medical teams for Haj duty.

Roukaya19 October 24th, 2010, 03:45 AM Jamarat Bridge Development Project
It is one of the development projects. The fifth and final phase of Jamarat Bridge project has been completed. The bridge is 950 meters long and 80 meters wide. It consists of five floors each of which is 12 meters high. The entire project is designed to hold 12 stories and as many as five million pilgrims in the future if the need arises. The project also includes three tunnels and covers other construction work with the possibility of future development. The project provides 11 entrances and 12 exits in all four directions. It has a helipad for facilitating the landing of helicopters in an emergency. The Jamarat project also includes an air-conditioning system backed by water sprinklers that can reduce the temperature to about 29 degrees centigrade.
A number of side projects have also been completed including the re-organization of the Jamarat Bridge facilitating access in six directions, three on the south and three on the north. The project will help to organize and allocate appropriate places for services, such as food stores, barbers shops, and toilets, and areas for medical and emergency services, civil defense forces and public security.
The Jamarat Bridge also includes subways for underground vehicular traffic to provide more space for pedestrians in the bridge areas in addition to six exits for emergency evacuation through six emergency towers leading to the ground floor and tunnels as well as to the helipads. The oval design of the pebbles basins and the three 40-meter-high pillars have improved the flow of pilgrims and increased the capacity of the bridge, which has helped to reduce congestion while pilgrims are performing the stoning ritual.

swerveut November 8th, 2010, 03:19 PM The Jamarat bridge looks great, but one question about Jamaraat themselves.
Earlier, they used to be pillars marking exact spots where the rami was performed. Now they look like walls and mark a long strip rather than a spot. Is this valid? How is this justified? Is there any english translation of any religious justification regarding doing of rami a little away from the traditional spots?
Best regards.
btw. if you look through Satellite imagery, this bridge looks bigger than the whole of Masjid-al-Haram itself!

The oval design of the pebble basin and the three 40-meter high pillars have improved the pilgrims' movement and drastically reduced the chance of congestion and stampedes when Hajis perform the stoning of the Satan ritual.
The bridge has 11 entrances and 12 exits in addition to a helipad at the top. An advanced cooling system is also in place in the locations in and around the bridge, maintaining the temperature at 29 degrees Celsius.
The bridge has been designed to enable authorities to quickly intervene in case of stampedes during the stoning ritual.
Sleeping or camping on the bridge or pedestrian paths will not be allowed under any circumstances, officials said. The foundations of the bridge are strong enough to hold 12 floors with a capacity for 5 million pilgrims if the need arises in the future.
With the completion of the project, the Jamrat has become a unique architectural achievement that is expected to stop stampedes and other crowd-related accidents.
It was with the aim of guaranteeing maximum safety and comfort to pilgrims that Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah ordered the construction of the mammoth project.
Advanced engineering technology was employed in the construction of the bridge. The most remarkable feature of the bridge is that crowds of pilgrims approaching from a road cannot encounter pilgrims coming from another road.
Another feature is that those entering a floor will have to follow a one-way route. This also helps prevent crowding.
While pilgrims can perform the stone throwing ritual on all five levels of the bridge, those coming from the direction of Mina will enter the first floor through the approach road from the streets of Souq Arab and Souq Al-Jouharah, situated north of the tent city.
On the other hand, pilgrims from south Mina will enter at the second level of the bridge from the Southern Pedestrian Road and King Faisal Street. The exit from the second level is to the three roads sloping toward Mina.
The third level is meant for pilgrims coming from the direction of central Mina, King Fahd Street and also from the Mina hill slopes, while entry and exit from the floor is possible with the help of massive escalators in addition to ordinary staircases.
There are also approach roads to the third level from the mountain slopes and from behind Mina.
The fourth floor is meant for pilgrims coming from the direction of King Abdulaziz Street.
This level can be accessed and exited through the passages on the fifth level directly connected to the courtyard and utilities on King Abdulaziz Street.
The bridge also has facilities providing refreshments, ritual shaving, toilets, public security and first aid posts and fire stations.
A network of surveillance cameras transmits developments from every inch of the bridge to a control room, which enable quick mobilization of emergency services in case of any accidents.
A total of two million Muslims are expected to perform Haj this year, which will begin on Nov. 14.
The number, which includes a projected 250,000 pilgrims from within the Kingdom, could be down by 10 percent from last year due to limitations on accommodation in the holy city as construction of new projects is still under way.
Pilgrims have been pouring through the Haj Terminal at Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport at a rate of 60,000 a day over the past week, according to airport officials. Ships, mainly from Sudan, have also been drawing up at Jeddah Islamic Port, delivering thousands more African pilgrims each day.

http://www.aleqt.com/a/465962_132434.jpg

Vincen1 August 15th, 2011, 06:47 PM I understand why it is built. There are just só many people who want to perform the ritual. So it is very interesting as for scale, infrastructure and crown control.
But as a non-muslim I almost can't believe that people find it spiritual satisfying to do it in a kind of giant machine. There even is no physical connection with history anymore. Are there quranic laws that tell the stoning ritual must be done in this specific place?

You are right in saying that there has been such a brutal and thorough modernization of all ritual places in Mecca and Medina that the historical connection has almost totally been lost. You really have to put your brain at work in thinking that yes these were the places Abraham was tempted by the devil and etc. Even though modernization is essential because of the ever-increasing crowds, maybe some architectural solution could have been found to retain some historical ethos to the place so the ritual would have more symbolic significance.

Jamarat Bridge: The greatest historical project in Mina
http://www.spa.gov.sa/galupload/normal/66917_1290006859_9306.jpg
19 august 2011

King Abdulaziz Public Library present
The Hajj
New website : kapl-hajj.org
Hajj: Journey to the Heart of Islam
The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, His Majesty King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud has given directives to commence a major expansion of Al-Haram Mosque.
With this in mind, The King Abdulaziz Public Library, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia has launched an initiative to inform and update the global community of this ground breaking expansion project. As part of this initiative The King Abdul Aziz Public Library has partnered with the British Museum, London UK, to launch the “Hajj Exhibition – Journey to the heart of Islam”
The new kapl-hajj.org website www.kapl-hajj.org is a wider part of this initiative to provide information, news and updates as well as feedback from the global community on their personal experiences.
This website endeavours to provide a rich resource of text and media not only of the current work taking place but also of both historic and future plans of the Hajj expansion program, to provide pilgrims with a peaceful and safe spiritual journey to the heart of their Islam, the Hajj.
Very interesting website with beautiful pictures!
The Jamarat Bridge Project
An exceptional achievement of Crowd Control
http://www.kapl-hajj.org/photos/jamarat4s.jpg
The Jamarat are three sites located close to each other on a straight line in Mina. Pilgrims stone the Jamarat as a sign of obedience to God. Stoning of the Jamarat is one of the duties of the Hajj and follows the example of the Father of Prophets Ibrahim Peace Be Upon Him.
In response to the huge increase in the numbers of pilgrims year after year, the Saudi authorities sought ways to remove the obstacles created by the increasing crowds at the Jamarat and thereby enable the pilgrims to perform their rituals with ease and in a safe way.
The first Jamarat Bridge was built in 1975 in order to facilitate the stoning ritual by providing two levels for pilgrims carrying out the ritual, one beneath the bridge and another on the bridge itself. However, as pilgrim numbers continued to increase, this bridge became incapable of handling the huge numbers of pilgrims. Consequently, the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia decided to demolish it after the Hajj season of 2006 and to replace it with a new multilevel structure capable of accommodating greater numbers of pilgrims and thereby facilitating stoning of the pillars in a safe and effective manner.
The new Jamarat Bridge is 950 meters long and 80 meters in width and consists of five levels, each of which is 12 meters high. To facilitate movement, the bridge has 12 entrances and 12 exits, distributed among all four directions, in addition to emergency exits. This will enable authorities to accommodate 300,000 pilgrims an hour for stoning. The structure is equipped with surveillance cameras throughout which are in constant operation, and which are used to pinpoint areas where fast intervention and provision of emergency medical assistance is necessary. Finally, the Jamarat Bridge facility also includes two helicopter pads for emergency use.
In order to provide a more pleasant environment for pilgrims, the Jamarat Bridge project also includes an air conditioning system accompanied by water sprinklers, capable of lowering the air temperature to around 29 degrees Celsius.
On the fifth floor of the bridge, huge awnings have been constructed which cover all three Jamarat areas, thereby enabling pilgrims to perform their rituals easily and to protect them from the oftentimes fierce sunlight.
Construction of the Jamarat Bridge took several years, and all precautions were taken so that work did not interfere with the rituals performed every year by the pilgrims.
It is worthy of note that the Jamarat Bridge project was designed with future needs in mind also, as it can be expanded to a total of 12 levels capable of accommodating more than 5 million pilgrims. In 2008, it was awarded the Makkah al-Mukarramah Prize for the best project serving the needs of pilgrims.

27 August 2012 - 09 Shawwal 1433 H
One of the highlights of the projects is the construction of the widest pedestrian tunnel in the world. The tunnel will link Al-Aziziyah neighborhood with the second floor of Al-Jamarat Bridge.
The 16-meter-wide tunnel will serve pilgrims who stay in Al-Aziziyah neighborhood and want to go to Al-Jamarat Bridge without having to pass through the center of Mina.
The tunnel is 300 meters long. Another similar tunnel, which is expected to be finished soon, will allow 500,000 pilgrims to complete the pebble-throwing ritual at Al-Jamarat without having to pass through the center of Mina as well. Both tunnels will be in operation this Hajj season.

to welcome influx of pilgrims
22 October 2012
After a year’s lull, activity has resumed on the tunnels and the bases of al-Jamarat Bridge. Construction vehicles are seen everywhere as they pave the way for the Hajj season.
Al-Jamarat square is filled with workers who are preparing to welcome pilgrims, days before the holy event. Services this year include the construction of several tunnels and bridges that will facilitate in dispersing the crowd of pilgrims. Al-Jamarat Bridge will also enhance its passages.
To meet the increasing influx of pilgrims and improve the overall structure, 6 levels have been created for the stoning ritual. Each level can sustain 120,000 pilgrims on an hourly basis.
The project size, including the slopes and the eastern and western plazas is 2 square kms, and amounts to 4.2 billion Saudi Riyals. Al-Jamarat facilities do not only include passages to accommodate pilgrims, but also security headquarters for all government services deployed across 6 towers, with each service designated a mission. The operations room has been equipped with the latest equipment that monitors the crowds through a surveillance program that includes 100 high-tech cameras covering all corners.
Moreover, 450 air conditioners are installed to help regulate the temperature.

24 October 2012
The basement of al-Jamarat Bridge lies 15 meters underground, and Al Arabiya got the opportunity to see the automated method of gathering, storing and sorting the pebbles used by pilgrims in the stoning ritual that takes place above the three basins.
“This system works according to electric gates. It removes all the pebbles that have been gathered in al-Jamarat’s basin.”
Each of the basins of al-Jamarat has two machine systems that transfer the pebbles from the bottom of the bridge at different speeds. This system has gates that are electronically controlled to manage the pebbles course, quantity and destination. It also features sorting censors that filter and isolate everything that is thrown into the pit.
“The quantities of pebbles, when reached 1000 tons, are relocated after the Hajj period and after the pilgrims have departed from Mashaal. These quantities are sent to special locations.”
The remainders at al-Jamarat Bridge reach 300 tones according to official statistics that have been recorded from previous years’ experiences. The electronic system, which works through electronic gates located in each floor of al-Jamarat Bridge, simplified the process of redirecting the pebbles towards compressors at the bottom of the bridge.
Each corner of the facility shows the quick development that occurred from the top to the bottom of the bridge. The basement houses meticulous organization of surveillance cameras and general safety measures. The routes of the bridge’s vehicles also demonstrate the modernization of al-Jamarat Bridge.

Jamarat bridge complex
Sunday 10 February 2013
The Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs and the Commission for the Development of Makkah are studying a project related to the digging of a four-kilometer tunnel for pedestrians, stretching from the northern part of Jamarat Bridge in Mina to the northern courtyards of the Grand Mosque.
The study that is being finalized showed the project would cost SR 800 million.
If launched, it will take about 24 months to complete, the study stated, and will pass through the Alaziziya district and the northern parts of the area. It will end at the mosque’s northern expansion site, which is now under construction.
Makkah and the holy sites of Mina, Muzdalifah and Arafat are witnessing huge projects worth more than SR 100 billion. These projects include expanding the 'mataf' (circumambulation) and northern courtyards, building residential towers that can accommodate hundreds of thousands of pilgrims as well as bridges, tunnels and infrastructures that would provide better services to pilgrims.

There are already 4 tunnels in the areas mentioned above, two for locomotives and two for pedestrians (these 2 might be transformed to Makkah Metro tunnels), where will they dig the new ones? There is no space.
