Nina Tower is also a fair way from Central and not even on HK Island. It's right out in the The New Territories in Tsuen Wan. It does dominate the area esp with a little low rise shopping mall next door. There are quite a few tall appartment towers though.

I had a good inspection of Nina Tower this time last year ... it looked great then and it looks great now and it's certainly looking much higher.

This is orginal proposal 515m that was never built.

Where the feck did the park hyatt come from? that's gone up extremely fast!
It looks almost right behind the Penisula Hotel and very close to the Kowloon Hotel. It's rather monolithic for this part of TST.

I wonder if it causes issues with the helipads on the Peninsula Hotel roof?

You know, I don't think I've EVER seen anything but bamboo scaffolding in HK. I don't understand how it all stays up, particularly 300+ metres up... scary.

I saw mega cities HK on tv and they where interviewing a construction worker on the job site & she's talking away, hanging over the edge, tying bamboo bits together, no problems mate, no safety harness. All I could think of was what I said yesterday starting with F.

Bamboo is far stronger than most people give it credit for, and cheap too. But it rots easily. They hold the bamboo structure together purely through plastic ties AFAIK.

Just to reiterate, this tower is not in the in the city and it a few kilometres out in the New Territories. It's a bigun for the suburbs and looks even more impressive when its considered as a suburban tower.

Tsuen Wan
Note the position on Tsuen Wan on the map below, with HK Island to the south, it is defintely a little way out of the city and kowloon.

^^ Yeh, Hong Kong is really awsome.
I really prefer the design of the buildings in Hong Kong - - I really like the 'glassy effect'.
Even though the 'suburban design' which melbourne and other australian cities are embracing are still pretty good - - i still think should build a few more glassy ones

Unfortunately, I haven't come across a very reliable breakdown of buildings by height, especially for the shorter ones. There are just too many of them.

Yeah from a distance they look great if a little disjointed esp ICC, it links Kowloon with the Island iconically but unortunately it's not really in a great spot on the Kowloon peninsula. I really preferred the taller towers being hidden a little back off the water, these babies just sit right on the harbour and diminish the rest of the skyline.

CP Doom
April 5th, 2009, 02:23 AM
Those podium shots make the place look like morwell on a sunday & yes, i agree with you Avatar, i always wondered why the taller towers where smack bang on the waters edge. Its not as if they are the most lively addition to an active waterfront. But in terms of size, sexy glass etc I cant complain. Still using that bamboo scaffolding I see. (shudders)

They need 1 day to approve a scraper and another to construct it. We need 1 decade to approve one and a century to build it. Then halfway through we'll find that we're off our budget and it'll take another decade to build something that's now toned down and less than impressive.

Tayser - this it at the end of the Ma On Shan Line, isn't it?

I love HK property developers - there are more disclaimers on that site than actual information about the development. Are you familiar with The Palazzo, another development by Sino Land? It's much the same as Lake Silver: plonked on top of a distant MTR station, painted pink with some plastic arches and given an amazing 'clubhouse' that will quickly become empty as the developer closes the facilities.

And I didn't even mention the tiny habitation cubes. Sorry, apartments.

I think this sums up HK's skyline perfectly. Build one sexy ,glassy scraper at the front to hide all those eye sores at the back. At street level i loved the clash between the 2 (1st vs almost 3rd world) it was very interesting. In actual fact i just loved HK in general.
