View Full Version : City Block of Alice, Margaret and William Streets
NCC1701D January 20th, 2006, 06:41 AM Does anyone know or has anyone heard anymore about what the State Government is planning to build on this site. At the moment it is an open aired carpark right next to the Xpressway. The reason I ask is because I was just talking to a State Security Officer who told me about sprinkler systems in buildings and how the Executive Building as it is now in George St doesn't have any sprinklers in the lower Basement floors but said that the new Executive building will have them in the basement floors. I asked where is the new building going to be and he said where the car park is now as I mentioned above. Anyone got any more news at all??? I haven't heard anything about this in ages.
Brizzy-Mike January 20th, 2006, 07:40 AM Being a gov dept, they have probably already bought the sprinkler system, so they will have to build a building to stick the sprinklers in. Bureacratic logic.
BrizzyChris January 20th, 2006, 07:47 AM In CBD masterplands and from Northbank news, this site has been earmarked as having a fairly sizeable tower on it in the future. It's a big bit of land, but having the parliament right next door might hinder it's height or design.

Malt January 20th, 2006, 08:27 AM The vision renders had a 200m tower on the site

Orfeo January 20th, 2006, 09:18 AM I don't even think the Government knows what they're planning for the site.... the site was to have quite short buildings. When the new Northbank plans are released for comment, hopefully they'll give a better idea.
NCC1701D January 20th, 2006, 11:15 AM It is supposed to replace the Executive Building and house a few other Government departments so I can't see it being too small. If anything it would have to be around the 150m mark or taller. I know he was only a security guard but the way he was talking he thinks they're going to demolish the old Executive building.
GMAC January 20th, 2006, 01:31 PM What ever they build as a new home for themselves, the idea of them demolishing the current executive building is glorious, that building is so ugly and is such a scar on that side of the city.

Unless there has been a really big change from the basic plan, I think the guard was talking crap.
The buildings are to expand the governement offices in that section of the city; to create a precinct with the annex. So the new buildings are not a replacement at all for the Annex. Thus I severely doubt that they would demolish the annex building.
While the northbank plan has been seen as only a basic guideline for developers to use in their submittions, I wouldn't expect the government to have changed its mind on its own project
As you can see, the buildings are not very tall at all -

It is possible that they seem shorter because of the angle, but I would be surprised if either reached 150m.
TOCC January 21st, 2006, 06:36 AM well we should find out late february once the final submissions for the Northbank plan have come in. Im sure the govt is trying to tie this area in the Northbank Plans
nagelixin January 21st, 2006, 08:47 AM I'm think it will get a lot of publicity. By then the silly summer season will be over, and the state will be looking for bright stories to show they are getting on with things, despite the alledged hospital crisis. My labor insider advised that is why Peter Beattie is not coming back from holidays.
neilo63 January 21st, 2006, 09:08 AM As long as the buildings over the "express" way aren't too bulky i am all for this northbank re-development. A new governement building would be welcome so long as it replaces the atrocity that bridges Margaret St and doesn't look like an 80's bomb shelter.
