The third biggest city on the island is Taichung.
As Taipei means "Taiwan North," Taichung means "Taiwan Center" in literal sense.
Taichung, 2 hours south of Taipei by car, is a city with a population just over 1 million and about 2.5 million in the metropolitan. Although Taichung's metro population is very close to that of Kaohsiung, it's still relatively small in economy and importance compared to Kaohsiung. Nevertheless, Taichung is the fastest growing city in Taiwan now, and maybe one day it can surpass Kaohsiung and become the second largest city.
One thing worth noting is that Taichung is the birth place of bubble tea (aka pearl tea).

There are also a couple good shots of Taichung that can not be put on here. So I will just show the link rather the photos.

http://www.worldcityphotos.org/Taiwan/TAI-Taichung-skyscraperpagecom1.jpg This one shows you that the air pollution in Taichung is a bit serious, eh? haha

http://www.worldcityphotos.org/Taiwan/TAI-Taichung-skyscraperpagecom2.jpg

okay, I just found out that even the links are not working for that website, so I guess I will just give you the following link which will lead you to the Taiwan section of the website rather than the photos themselves. But anyway, you can find 4 Taichung photos in the section. The third one is the one that shows how serious Taichung's air pollution is.

All the photos above were found on the internet. I do not hold the copy rights of any of them

Wow, I now have this city to thank everytime I down a cup of delicious bubble tea.

By the way, new to skyscrapercity forums. After viewing it for several days, this is really now my favorite place so I decided to join, my two favorite cities are Singapore and Taipei from viewing this site extensively. I rather don't quite like the city I live in.

Anyways, many thanks for telling me where bubble tea came from.

Actually Taichung is rather "unorganized" compare to Taipei in traffic. But I love it nonetheless.

Because Taipei has MRT (~1 million journeys per day), this has improved the traffic situation in the city very much.

--------

BRT's implementation is delayed due to the lack of trafficking load after the access at this point. I foresee its operation at around the same time when Chiayi National Palace's grand opening ~2010-11. "

Yea that obviously, but Taipei is just much more organized in traffic overall. Nobody walks when it's red light, everybody wears helmets for motorpeds. In Taichung, it's just totally chaos. Everybody in Taipei actually follows the rules. People in Taichung don't. Other than the biggest road (中港路) and 文心路, they're all pretty chaotic. Especially right in front of 中友百貨

I agree. Even when comparing it to Taiwan's second largest city its a world of a difference. Everyone on the subway is orderly and traffic is orderly even when everything is fast paced. And you don't get sights of rotting buildings everywhere like in Kaohsiung.

Well you can't really help with the rotting buildings. It's too freaking humid in Taiwan. The metal in the buildings rust, so thats where those streaks of brownish color on the walls come from.

I live in Singapore and its much more humid here but the government, authorities and private developers repaint exterior walls every 5 years or so. Taiwanese buildings tend to look decaying from the outside but on the inside it looks like a condo! No offence intended.

Typhoon paths can be predicted, so it is possible to just ground all the elevators before a typhoon strikes. Whether it can withstand large earthquakes is a bigger issue, if you ask me.

Emm... London also doesnt really have a skyline! hahaha! Maybe its designed to look across the strait :p It will be a good boost to the Taichung Skyline if the location is right. I agree with you that they should spend the money on beautifying the city! I think all Taiwanese cities should focus on city renewal instead of using new land to build new buildings. Thats the sad thing about a capitalist and democratic society, a "willing seller willing buyer situation" that drives up the land price. Investors rather build on new land instead of redeveloping old areas. Look at the areas around the train station for instance.

but you're talking 2 different issues. one is existence of a skyline, the other is modern architecture. which is it? you said london doesnt really have a skyline which isnt true at all. london has a beautiful skyline much of it consisting of older buildings and traditional achitecture. plus the canary wharf area has tall modern buildings. taichung doesnt have any interesting QUALITY architecture or anything interesting to see like london has to warrant this 'taiwan tower'.
