rejow January 21st, 2006, 12:34 AM Biggest running railway infrastructure project in Czech republic is „New Connection“ between four major railway stations (Main station, Libeň, Masarykovo, Holešovice) in Prague. This project contains more then 27 km of tracks, 10 rail bridges (biggest one is 500m long and with four way track) and two road bridges , two two-way rail tunnels each more then 1km long. All of that will cost around 300 mil €. Construction period 2004-2008.

Guys, do you remember an old crazy plan to bring the Maglev all around Eastern Europe?
I can't remember if it was a prank by someone here or the crazy dream of some company, but I remember reading about it

Pavlo January 21st, 2006, 03:23 AM Phil, yea I still remember that, I tried looking for that thread in the subways and urban transport forum but it's probably been pruned. Crazy project, I wonder it there was any new info on it.
rejow January 24th, 2006, 08:57 PM I would like to show you very radical railway project called „Berounka valley bypass“.
I heard about this project for a year, but I can´t imagine it in EE
but last week Czech minister of transport made public announcement
and he placed this project on government list of important civil engineering projects.
So first step for realization has been made.
Construction will (hopefully) start in 2008.
Most info I took from SZDC (Czech railway infastructure agency, something like Railtrack in UK) symposium about
investment into infrastructure and from Vosloh representative in CR.
Technical info: Length of new track will be 25km
Max construction speed: 300kmph
Tunnels: 1. base tunnel 19 209m (only one way)
2. svatojansky tunnel 4 525m (full profile)
Bridges: 1. svatojansky 430m
2. bridge over berounka river 323m
Superstructure system: non ballast Rheda 2000

Wow, first VRT in the Czech republic and with almost 20km long tunnel. That´s a start! :)
I see on the visualisations, that VRT, direction Plzeň is planned. Does it mean, that in the future the line will be tracked down to Plzeň?

kokpit April 30th, 2006, 06:45 PM Since 1993 about 700km of total 1440km main railroads were modernised for 160km/h speed, several tens kilometres were rebuild to straighten tracks.
This year reconstruction of Prague-Pilsen-(Nürnberg) route for 250-300km/h has started.
Current main tracks (1440km in modernisation, about 700km modernised for 160km/h till now)

All railway stations and stops on maintracks are being modernised as well.

Timoth12 April 30th, 2006, 08:56 PM Just astounding, you guys modernised the railways, while Slovakia was a bit sleeping up in this matter. Now you are clearly ahead of us.
Kokpit, the new tunnels are planned also for Slovakia - this (http://www.sudop.cz/cs/revue/2004/02/08.pdf) one for Nové mesto nad Váhom, but I doubt they will reach the lenghth of your tunnels.
kokpit April 30th, 2006, 10:09 PM Thanks for that source, Timoth12. Well, Slovakia has perfect landscape for tunnels so they will come one day for sure, e.g. I saw project for D1 motorway and there were plenty of tunnels, something like in Alpes.
And new railroads will be something similar, you can look forward for them. EU will help new members with money like in Portugal or Spain. So I see only bright future for Slovakia in this matter (and not only in this matter :) ).
Timoth12 April 30th, 2006, 10:42 PM We´ll see, kokpit, but thanks for the compliment ;)
Anyway, you guys finished practically 700 km, while Slovakia really smaller percentage of the planned modernisation. And you are right, during the planned modernised track along Váh river valley there is a densed urban area, moreover the steep slopes of the surrounding mountains and the river makes it necessary to find alternative solutions also for modernised railway tracks. And sure, EU helps.
Regarding D1 highway, next month should begin the excavation works for ca. 1 km tunnel Bôrik under Poprad, official construction has been already started. But more tunnels, like Višňové, or Korbeľka are to be started in the next several months, at least I hope so.
kokpit April 30th, 2006, 11:21 PM The dialnice.info is suberb web, I visit it regulary for half a year (only as a reader).
Once finished, Slovakian motorways and railroads will be spectacular, new Switzerland in Europe is coming. :)
Bikes April 30th, 2006, 11:32 PM Very nice project, i just feel that Czech Rep. is always one step infront of Hungary. This month our prime minister announced that they are going to build highspeed railways in Hun besides the 100km/year motorways they are currently constructing.

Well, I guess. if Switzerland, you might be the first :) . Or maybe it´ll be a friendly rivalry for us to catch up ;)
kokpit April 30th, 2006, 11:49 PM Well, I guess. if Switzerland, you might be the first :) . Or maybe it´ll be a friendly rivalry for us to catch up ;)
We'll never be second Switzerland Timoth, we don't have High Tatras and such mountainous landscape as you, that's only slovakian domain.
kokpit April 30th, 2006, 11:52 PM Very nice project, i just feel that Czech Rep. is always one step infront of Hungary. This month our prime minister announced that they are going to build highspeed railways in Hun besides the 100km/year motorways they are currently constructing.
Hungary has very good landscape for highspeed railroads, I believe they will be built in next few years. Since we are all in EU it'll be much easier.
Timoth12 May 1st, 2006, 12:09 AM We'll never be second Switzerland Timoth, we don't have High Tatras and such mountainous landscape as you, that's only slovakian domain.
Well, but you have mountainious landscape almost on the whole territorry. And High Tatras cliffs area covers just smaller part of the country, than Alps cliffs in Switzerland. Other parts of Slovakia and Czech republic as well are mostly forrested landscape /except for valleys and smaller flat parts/.
And come on, kokpit, Vysoké Tatry /High Tatras/ are also yours, you guys are always most frequentant visitors of it, as you are in the whole Slovakia.
kokpit May 1st, 2006, 12:22 AM :) we are visitors because we love Tatras and entire Slovakia (and we are brothers of course:) ) but they are yours and you should be proud of them. And visitors from other countries will come in larger numbers in near future, Tatras will be only discovered.
And yes, Czech Rep is not flat and we have nice mountains, but frankly speaking it's not comparable to mountains in Slovakia or Alpine countries.
Slovakia has everything, high mountains, hilly landscape, great nature and national parks with wild animals etc. it'll be ideal and famous touristic destination.
Sometime I've read that average altitude in SVK is about 600 meters, that speaks for oneself.
Timoth12 May 1st, 2006, 12:47 AM Kokpit, I am really impressed, sorry to be sentimental, but also your attitude shows, why you, guys are by far the most popular nation in Slovakia. And I promise to make a nice thread about High Tatras mountains.
kokpit May 1st, 2006, 10:22 AM Good idea, High Tatras are real gem in EE.
And of course, Slovakia is by far most popular nation Czechia, we are brotherhood nations after all. :cheers1:

Carletto May 4th, 2006, 11:51 AM I took the train from Bratislava to Praha (and back) last March and it was really a looooooong journey (4 hours), something really far from high-speed. Expecially the Slovakian side was incredibly long, even if it's just flat land there, but there were working construtions there, only 1 rail could be used for several Km and so the train had to be very slow.
On the Czech side, passing Brno it's mountain railway, lots of bends, low speed, no other choice with that landscape (unless looooooong tunnels). What are the projects for Praha-Brno high-speed tracks? From Praha to Pardubice the line seems not bad, quite new, but the rest is really old... are they planning to "upgrade" that line or build a new one, maybe passime more on the west side, across Jihlava maybe?

Irish Blood English Heart September 2nd, 2006, 10:45 AM Will international trains ever serve Hlavi Nadrazi rather than Holesovice in Prague. Holesovice is always a bit of a dump when I pass through it.
kokpit September 2nd, 2006, 10:56 AM Hlavní Nádraží is already served by international trains, but not on Berlin-Dresden-Prague-Brno-Vienna/Bratislava/Budapest directon. For these routes trains will always stopped in Holešovice.
Holešovice are going to be reconstructed so it could help. BTW Hlavní Nádraží in some parts is even worse than Holešovice and is going to be reconstructed as well. Our railway infrastructure simply still suffer from "postcommunist disease"...

Timoth12 September 24th, 2006, 11:38 PM Nice project, kokpit.
Also, the possibillity of inreasing the maximum speed up to 180 km/h on reconstructed corridors is becoming serious:http://www.cd.cz/index.php?action=article&id=37188
Do you think it is real in a foreseeable future?
kokpit September 28th, 2006, 09:48 AM I think it's possible but it's rather "cosmetic change" because there are many sections with speed limit under 120kmph even after modernisation and this will remain for a long time. Increasing from 160 to 180 will compress travel time from Prague to Ostrava (about 400km) only by few minutes.
Spencer October 3rd, 2006, 03:40 PM Very nice project, i just feel that Czech Rep. is always one step infront of Hungary.
That's funny, similarly I feel about Poland being one step behind (well, maybe one and a half ;) ) It's nice to see though that one of the Vysehrad countries isn't trapped between constant swing of plannig and delaying...
Frankly, I do find Prague's progress in it's infrastructure upgrade really astonishing.

Marek.kvackaj November 16th, 2006, 03:44 PM New fast train to connect Bratislava and Prague..also to Wien
AS OF December 10, a so-called Pendolino fast train will start operating on a regular line connecting Bratislava and Prague.
Passengers will get to Prague from the Slovak capital in three hours and 49 minutes. The train travels at speeds of over 100 kilometers per hour and in selected places will go as fast as 160 kilometers per hour, Sme wrote.
The train connection will be operated under the name SC Slovenská strela (SC Slovak missile) by the Czech and Slovak railway companies České dráhy and Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko.
The new Pendolino connection will be 22 minutes faster than the current fastest connection, the Euro City Slovenská strela.

Timoth12 November 16th, 2006, 08:50 PM Yes, it seems, that December 10 is the final and official date. Here is also a good article in Czech and Slovak on www.vlaky.net including photogallery.: http://www.vlaky.net/servis/sprava.asp?lang=1&id=1506. I took Pendolino from Břeclav to Brno in Summer, can´t wait to to travel to Praha by rail occasionally.
kokpit November 16th, 2006, 09:30 PM I think that this project with pendolino will suffer a big loss. Tickets are much more expensive than bus, normal train or even car with two people inside. It's aprox. same comfortable as normal Eurocity train and only a bit faster. So I don't see any advantages about this train. I even saw that they operate with only about four wagons in one train between Prague and Ostrava, there is simply little demand...
Marek.kvackaj November 16th, 2006, 09:40 PM That true what you wrote here about demant ...let see maybe in near future goes ticket a bit down..
just is a bit weird that on line connecting Bratislava and Prague is cut down by only 20minutes...consider that Pendollino train coast 5billion SKK...its seem too early for that developed train to be here...but maybe on other hand will increase
spending on Raillways..so good luck for future here in Slovakia
Timoth12 November 16th, 2006, 09:45 PM Well, in CZ is this train operating more than 1 year, maybe two years, if I am not mistaken. Anyway, one of the big advantages is that you avoid traffic jams, because the train drives directly to the city center and in the mornings and evenings it is just impossible to get to Prague and also Bratislava by car without substantial time loss. Also in the future the train will probably drive even faster. You can also save your time, instead of driving you can work or just relax in train, while during driving a car it is impossible.

Yes, I think the same. May be prize of the tickets will go down, but then there's no chance of recoverability of costs of these pendolinos... Most profitable should be route Berlin-Prague-Vienna-(Bratislava/Budapest) but we will only see...

Yes, that's general advantage of any train, but theses pendolinos were simply too much expensive to buy. Normal train with comparable quality is better option since the ticket is two times cheaper.

One question: Are there plans to make track from Plzeň to Cheb double track? And is it all already electrified?
my comments to Plzeň - Cheb section wasn´t clear, so I take second attempt:)
And is it all already electrified?
line is electrified since 80´, whole line is remotely controled from Plzeň (as first in CZ)
Are there plans to make track from Plzeň to Cheb double track?
Not only plans, project is u/c as you can see on pictures. Currently works are going on section Kozolupy-Pňovany.
Plzeň - Pňovany is done, but this section was double tracked somewhere in 60´, so it was only modernization for higher speeds.
Last part Pňovany - Stříbro will stay single tracked, becouse line is passing very narrow mže valley with lots of tunels and bridges, straightening of this part has been planed but it was too expensive.
Works on remaining part Stříbro - Cheb depends on the level in state treasury. there were huge plans something like VRT:nuts:

kokpit January 10th, 2007, 01:40 AM According to this map, high-speed rail (VRT) will go from Plzeň completely different way. What about track between Prague and Plzeň? Are there any constructions going on?
http://www.cd.cz/files/Mapa_VRT-f2f20f8fc58de92ae69e38cc2fe9b4f6.jpg
I think this modernisation on Plzeň-Cheb and Plzeň-Domažlice routes is quite sufficient, there's no need (and of course, no money :) ) to make all tracks HSR. But we definitely need some high-speed track to join western Europe. Route to Nurnberg via Pilsen should be built first.
rejow January 10th, 2007, 02:11 AM Plzeň - Praha
according to what i heard from administrator of the track (SŽDC - Goverment rail track agency), hottest spot is part from Plzeň to Rokycany, because final stage of realization documentation is done (SUDOP - project company). Construction should start in 2007/2008, but don´t take it too serious, informations what I have are semi-official. :) It depends as always on money.
map:
there will be change. Újezd village don´t demand train stop, so these two tunnels will be joined into one 3700m long. Top speed will be more then 200km/h.

so, begining of construction works will be in 2020, first train ?2028?

Jízda z Prahy do Berouna potrvá 18 minut.
Z projektu totiž kvůli protestům obce Svatý Jan pod Skalou zmizel malý most přes řeku Loděnici, a proto se vlak vynoří z podzemí až těsně před berounským nádražím.
Projektanti tunelu přidali i jedno nové vyústění.
Zpočátku tu ovšem budou jezdit běžné soupravy rychlostí do 160 km/h.
Jenže i tyto propočty počítají s původně plánovanou cenou tunelu 20,5 miliardy korun.

In summary for those that dont speak czech:
Project design of the longest rail tunel in Czech Republic between Prague and Beroun (toward Pilsen) has been completed. The plans are to start construction in 2010 or 2011 and should be completed by 2016.
According to the initial plans the project has been changed. The tunnel is now longer 24.7 km instead of 20 kilometers and is more expensive and instead of a single tunnel for one rail now will include two parallel tunnels having single rail each. It is longer primarilly due to complaints from a village that did not want the high speed rail line cross a river near it.
It is a priority project and is a first project of a planned high speed rail line Prague - Pilsen - Cheb - Germany which when completed will allow speeds up to 300km/h. :)
But I suggest for everyone who does not know czech to learn it in any case!
And yes its not easy, but you can do it! :banana2:
By the way great job Kokpit on your updates. I like the novespojeni.cz website well as well as the project of course. I wish everyone would realize that there are some people who want to see the progress and cant see it themselves since they live too far! There are very few of many websites that keep constantly providing construction updates. Its so great but so rare! :)

Pro našeho chorvatského přítele:
Ve vzdálenějším horizontu se uvažuje že by trať od Holešovic pokračovala rovně až do tunelu pod Hlavní nádraží kde by vytvořila třetí podzemní podlaží, to známená až pod stanicí metra.

I don't think so... On some parts of the railsystem even InterCity trains need to slow down and travel with the speed of 20km\h... And in Hungary we don't have so big-scale railway projects goin' on, like in Czechia or Slovakia...

historyworks August 16th, 2007, 03:34 AM Maybe the answer is in this thread and I haven't read it properly but what is the purpose of this new very expensive looking connection kokpit? There are already two other lines under/beside Žižkov (any more and your Czech national monument will fall into a hole!). Is it because more tracks are needed or does it lead to some destination?
historyworks August 16th, 2007, 02:15 PM ^^
Sorry I should have read the first post in this thread - teach me not to read threads backwards!
So are there any plans for the railway to Česky Raj - Prague to Turnov, Liberec? This is still very slow. I notice CD uses mainly buses for main connection (because the motorway is faster) and trains only for branches. I guess they are concentrating on international lines first, being the most important.
Then perhaps will come work on the railway stations themselves. It is funny going through some stations and the staff are always beautifully dressed, with flowers on the station etc but the buildings look as though they haven't had any maintenance since the 14th century! (A bit like your New Wave film "Closely observed trains"!)
kokpit August 16th, 2007, 02:29 PM Prague - Liberec is not main railway track so the reconstruction will be slower for that reason.
Article about the track is here (only in Czech...)
http://www.cd.cz/index.php?action=article&id=19616
funny things from the article:
"the newest" section on the route was built in 1872...
Bus Prague-Liberec via Expressway ... 96km, 72 min
Train Prague-Turnov-Liberec ...140 km, 2hrs 35 min
so the plan is to build new track, Prague-Liberec should last 80-90 min then
construction will start not earlier than in 2010...
historyworks August 17th, 2007, 03:14 AM How far from Prague are the cityElefants used? Are they long-distance commuter trains (what we call inter-urbans) or are they also used more distantly to other cities? What is the maximum distance people will commute to Prague? (Here it is about 80km but we are used to distances of course!) Are there other types of commuter trains - I presume some diesel railcars on non-electrified lines (like Prokop valley).
And how is maintenance work done on railway tracks there without interrupting services? Here they often close lines on weekends for maintenance and use buses, but I haven't noticed this so much in Europe.
Not too many questions I hope my friends! :wink2:

Are they long-distance commuter trains (what we call inter-urbans) or are they also used more distantly to other cities? What is the maximum distance people will commute to Prague? (Here it is about 80km but we are used to distances of course!) Are there other types of commuter trains - I presume some diesel railcars on non-electrified lines (like Prokop valley).
And how is maintenance work done on railway tracks there without interrupting services? Here they often close lines on weekends for maintenance and use buses, but I haven't noticed this so much in Europe.
Not too many questions I hope my friends! :wink2:
They are used as commuter trains for bigger cities (Prague, Brno, Ostrava). Maximum distance people are commuting is hard to determine, but I think it could be 80km as well. For example one friend of mine live in Tanvald (near Liberec) and goes to Prague every day (by car), it's about 80-90km (for me this is nothing but wasting of valuable time and fuel!).
There are many non-electric trains in Czechia, we have about 3000 km of electrified railway lines and 6500 km of non-electrified.
Maitenance of single-track railway line is always more difficult than double or triple or more track, that's obvious. From time to time there is closure of traffic and buses are being used instead.
Bit OT, I've probably asked for that already (sorry for my forgetfulness :) ), but what is the reason you are interested in Czechia?

Thanks kokpit.
I am married to a Czech, which is very lucky for me. We still have family over there. My wife's father was a designer of Line A of the Prague Metro so we used to talk a lot about all this and I met his colleagues in Prague. You have an amazing country and very clever people, I think we can learn a lot from you. Also next time I would like to see Slovakia, Hungary, Poland because there are many interesting things there I read about on this forum.
Also do you know your cityElefant is descended from a design first evolved I believe in Sydney? Here we have had these beautiful inter-urban double-deckers since 1970:

I believe these all-doubledeck electric multiple units were an Australian first. Others in Europe and America before that had a locomotive at one end. I stand to be corrected though. We had a great rolling stock industry for over 100 years but now multinationals have swallowed it and more is coming from overseas. Disgraceful! Skoda Transportation is trying to get into our market but hasn't succeeded yet.
kokpit August 19th, 2007, 12:38 PM ^ thank's for explanation of you interest and sorry for my forgetfulness, I have a mind like a sieve sometimes...
I've always admired Australia because of great mix of modern civilization, big cities and splendid nature. And of course we all envy you so much space you have over there. I still remember series for kids called Skippy (about the kangaroo) I had watched being kid during commie era (one of only few series from the West world at that time broadcasting here...), thanks to this Australia became very popular here in former communist Czechoslovakia, we learned about new cute animals like koala and so on... :)
Those Australian doubledeckers are classic, I believe I saw them in many films.
We had (not full) doubledeckers before 471 too, they were not very successful (unreliable) but few of them are still in operation I think, they were build at the end of 80's
http://www.k-report.net/discus/nahledy/079721.jpg
I quite like these, their design is pretty old (first prototype in 1957...) but they are nice and few of them still in operation

This example (above) I suspect shows why full double deckers took longer to come in Europe. You see here we have DC (1500v) electricity supply on the railway (from 1920s), so not much space is needed on board for power equipment since the motors (on the bogies) are also DC. Over there you have AC current and the train had to have space for equipment to convert to DC. Now I believe the drive is AC direct so there is now space for a full double deck configuration. It is a long time since I read all this so my details may be wrong, but I think this is roughly the reason.
(PS as a counterbalance to your "Skippy" experience our kids have a great supply of Czech videos and spend hours watching Krtek, Broucci, Staflik a spagetka etc. No matter that its not in English, much better than that violent American rubbish! )

RawLee September 21st, 2007, 10:56 AM Nice stuff! Will it be a HSR line?
kokpit September 21st, 2007, 11:01 AM It's in the city so there's no need to build HSR. But it will be much more faster than today for sure and will provide more tracks. Overall the railway traffic near Main railway station will be smooth and fast and that's the goal of the project.
geogregor September 30th, 2007, 05:44 PM Guys , when I see all this projects in Czech Republic, I get angry that Poland can't do it the same way :ohno:
You build new railways and city motorway ring around Prague and we can't even build motorway anyway closer than 100 km to our capital.
If I decide to go back to central Europe I go to Czech Republic instead of Poland ;)
It's not dificult beacouse I live right on border, close to Karvina and Ostrava.

Thanks for the great maps Marek.kvackaj. It intrigues me in CZ (and other parts of Europe) that so many branch lines survive in the country. In fact there are often diesel railcars on these branch lines but on the main lines many passenger services are by bus. As you would know in Britain and countries like Australia the opposite applies - the branch lines were considered "uneconomic" and closed and services replaced by buses while trains run only on the main lines.
Is there ever any discussion in CZ (or other CE countries) of the economics of branch lines and whether they should be closed?
Dinuś October 23rd, 2007, 11:55 AM Do you know anything about the construction progress on the Letohrad-Międzylesie stretch? I've heard some rumours that there won't be any trains running from Poland to Czech Republic via Międzylesie-Lichkov border crossing due to the delayed construction works, or is it just PKP screwing everything up? It would really be a pity if that happens, in that case I will have to make a huge detour going from Poznań if I want to travel all the way by train to Prague :bash: .

I don't know about Czech republic but in Slovakia there is a lot of branches from main corridors. And even much more branches were closed and canceled. However, not all branches are used by passanger trains. Many of them are only for cargo trains because buses are more economic on those routes.

Right, I know it, I just wonder how long will that take but looking at PKP's legacy in terms of cross-border traffic I'm skeptical. It took them years to start running trains via Głuchołazy-Ostružna not even to mentione the track from Szklarska Poręba via Jakuszyce to Harrachov and all this happens in a period of the European countries getting (supposedly) closer together:bash:

Also known as, gay-prostitution center, homlesses dormitory, place where you can buy any kind of drugs, casino and of course main railway station:ohno: Is finnaly turning into legends, which will be used only for frighten of kids
yes, it's quite difficult not to be trimmed there. however, those things you've mentioned aren't anything special all over Prague, e.g. strong drugs are available nearly everywhere. I don't think this place is a nightmare for tourists at all.

The construction and reconstructions are impressive, actually. I must admit that I begin to envy you your railways and everything you do with them, the new sections in Prague are simply stunnig!
Those modernized lines and stops also look very decent. As far as I remember, Usti nad Labem is not a big station, and you have electronic displays at the platforms there. That's something you can't expect even at big polish train stations, not to mention smaller ones...
Keep up the good work, and don't hesitate to post some more photos! Cheers!

tersyxus March 3rd, 2008, 07:41 PM Police in the Czech republic are trying to find out who stole a 4 tonne railway bridge from the border town of Cheb.
The company which was responsible for looking after the bridge raised the alarm when, ever alert, they noticed that the bridge wasn't there any more.
The bridge was on a disused stretch of line just outside Cheb.
Martina Hruskova, a spokeswoman for the Czech police, commented to AFP: 'We are not sure if it was taken for personal use or for its scrap value.' Exactly what that 'personal use' might be was left unsaid.
^^ Holy crap! I've already heard of similar bridge thefts in Hungary too but here they took an entire bridge. Taking 4 tonnes of steel unseen must have been a hell of a job. For personal use maybe? Exciting!

Yes, the station is still open and no, the station won't be reconstructed as far as I know :)
HiRazor March 5th, 2008, 10:12 AM As earthbound said the metro station remains open. The railway station (including main hall from where there's the only access to the metro station) is being reconstructed section-wise so that a continuous operation of both railway and metro stations can be maintained.

Hmm... I don't know why, but instantly I thought that the whole station is closed during the reconstruction, but now I see some trains in the pictures, so probably it is not.
What's the main purpose of this reconstruction anyway? Is it just a "face lifting" eg. laying the new rails and smoothening the platforms, or maybe some new features will be added, like additional tracks, new drainage system, new tunnel under the platforms, or something like that?

Přitom třeba Frýdlant nemá s Libercem ani pořádný silniční spojení, 15% nezaměstnanost a o nulovým spojení do Polska nemluvě..

Přitom třeba Frýdlant nemá s Libercem ani pořádný silniční spojení, 15% nezaměstnanost a o nulovým spojení do Polska nemluvě..

As a first stretch there should be modernisation of corridor Praha-Beroun (long tunnel - possible first usage of TBM in Czech rep.)
and new connection of Brno-Přerov for speed 200kph.
Possible start of first stretch between Brno and Přerov should be in 2010.
Present condition of Brno- Přerov track is quite bad, because it's not included in TEN-T and there wasn't reconstruction yet.
http://www.mapy.cz/#x=138673232@y=132782176@z=16@mm=FP
But it's a main railway between Brno and Ostrava and there is huge traffic of suburban trains between Brno and Vyškov. First modernized stretch should be Blažovice-Nezamyslice.

As you guys may have read in the papers, they're going to bury Magistrala underground between IP Pavlova and the Central Station. Do you know what it's going to look like in front of the historical buildiong of the station? Is the elevated highway going to stay there?

Yes it's gonna stay there, but it's gonna be changed to boulevard (something like Avenue de Champs Elysées in Paris). Reducing of traffic lanes, more pedestrian crossings, lower speed limit, etc.
Carolus Quartus April 6th, 2008, 12:15 AM This is possible between Nuselsky most and IP Pavlova (where Magistrala is just a city street) but not in front of the Central Station where it is an elevated highway. How can it be converted in a boulvard when it stands on pillars with no pedestrian access? Doesn't make any sense.
earthbound April 6th, 2008, 12:29 AM No it's not elevated. Not in the front of Fantova building. It stays on the "new" terminal hall, so pedestrian crossing is possible there.
edit: It's clear from this picture I think...

If I'm not mistaken there are plans only tu bury short section behind the National Museum.
And as earthbound already wrote, in front of the main railway station building the magistrala is not elevated, it runs over the hall

Carolus Quartus April 6th, 2008, 06:12 PM Thank you Earthbound and Kokpit for your quick answers and the attached visualizations. The thing is, I know what it looks like now but I just cannot imagine how this strip of highway placed on the top of another builing (no urban surroundings except for Fantova building) can be converted into a city boulvard. It has no pedestrian access expect for a staircase from the parking garage underneath....
This and Champs Elisee?

On another note, I just say a picture in today's lidovky showing, as Kokpit just pointed out, that Magistrala will go under just behind the museum and not all the way between Pavlak and Hlavak (which is what I read in HN this week). The budget is CZK 10 billion which seems a lot for the short version of the tunnel, but who knows. Maybe you guys know more.

Škoda 109e is a multi-voltage (3kV DC + 25 kV/50 Hz AC + 15 kV/16,7 Hz)/6,4 MW/200 kph universal electric locomotive currently developpped by Škoda transportation. The locomotive is intended as a direct competitior to Siemens' Taurus locomotive, specifically designed for central european markets. The launch customer is České dráhy (Czech railways), which ordered 20 of them. The first prototype is now complete and ready to test rides that are planned at ZŽO Cerhenice test circuit from the beginning of july on.
kokpit June 19th, 2008, 10:17 AM ^ interesting, how fast it will be? Taurus is the fastest locomotive in the world (357 kmph)

HiRazor June 19th, 2008, 10:35 AM Taurus is officially "only" 230 kph locomotive.
357 kph is a record set by a locomotive alone (w/o carriages), in special conditions, by a specifically adjusted locomotive. Btw these 357 kph is not really something so special to write about home. Current record for a railed vehicle is close to 580 kph set by TGV Duplex EMU in 2007. Siemens only took advantage from the fact nobody tried a record by a locomotive alone for quite some time (since 1955!) and made a cunning publicity stunt. More on railed vehicles' speed records on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_speed_record_for_railed_vehicles).
As for Taurus vs 109e comparisons, both have the same power output (6400 KW), so the max speed is rather question of fine tuning of the locomotive. I'm quite positive a 230 kph derivative of 109e is viable be there a customer for it.
