Askal82 May 7th, 2007, 12:03 AM ^^ Hola Antonio!
roberto0qs May 7th, 2007, 12:52 AM Q onda askal!
LatinPlane May 7th, 2007, 02:05 AM Hello My Filipino cousins.
My intention is not to fight, or to judge people. But, I just cannot stand false facts being put on the table to suit certain people's interest, whatever the issue may be. This is why education is so important - to find out the thruth.
I consider Filipinos to be cousins of us Mexicans. We have so much in common. I have a 2nd family that is Filipino. They adopted me, they took me in, and they made me one of theirs. They did this without taking into account my different background, my different beliefs, my different language ~ they just took me in! In the end, our differences were not so different, for after all, 200 years ago, our nations were united through trade, culture, and government.
The Filipinos are like a distant cousins that live far away in different lands , but deep down inside, you are related through the same customs, beliefs, and sometimes even through the blood lines.
I have a deep appreciation for Filipino culture, and for the Filipino people. It is the reason why I know when someone is genuinely portraying Filipino culture, and when someone wants to bull__t me with their colonial complex that is way outdated for today's age.

Convengo sinceramente
@latinplane, I don't think you made a riot in this thread. You spiced it up a bit but in a good way that Filipinos will understand from fellow cousin's point of view. :)

Great. I hope nobody was offended, and if they were ~ then they have some deep soul searching to do.
So, getting back to the topic. I believe that Filipinos should self-consiously decide what cultural/geographical region they feel best comfortable with, or both.
For example, Venezuelan's are by all means South American, yet they tend to consider themselves Caribean too. The Caribbean is at their shores, and technically, only one big Island of their territory (Isla Margarita) is part of the Caribbean, yet, their accent, their music, and their way of being is very much Caribbean.
Their Spanish accent is closer to the accent used in the Spanish Caribbean composed of Cuba, Puerto Rico, The Dominican Republic, and it is also close to Spain's Canary Islands. The Canary Island's, although 100% Spanish, have an accent 100% Latin American. This signifies the strong cultural trade between the two points.
Venezuelans feel perfectly comfortable saying that they are South American-Caribbean. Let's remember that South America is a BIG geographical region, and it changes accordingly. Asia's people are much more culturally and geographically diverse, so if Filipinos consider themselves both, what' s the worry?
Let's also remember that the Pacific Islanders are composed of different cultural backgrounds. For example, the Hawaiians, Samoans, Eastern Islanders, Tahitians, New Zealanders, are genetically Polynesean peoples with the same linear familty tree. On the other hand, the people of Guam, Saipan, and other islands are genetically Micronesians, while the peoples of Fiji, New Guinea, and Salomon Islands are Melanesians.
Although we may thing they look similar, they evolved out of different backgrounds, this proven by genetic studies. Are Filipinos, being predominantly Indo-Malay genes related somewhat either to the Micronesians, or Melanesians, or maybe not?

dattebayo May 7th, 2007, 08:49 AM meron ako american friend dito sa Cali, akala nila ang mga pinoy pacific islanders together with the samoans etc. Pero I said NO, we are ASIANS.
dattebayo May 7th, 2007, 09:04 AM From the Will and Grace show...
"I love Filipinos, they're asians but they're not cocky about it"
i dunno if thats the exact sentence... just remember
bitoy May 7th, 2007, 05:50 PM ^^ It was posted here in SSC a while ago, but here it is again. It is just a passive joke about Pinoys not bragging about being Asian. It could be interpreted in a lot of ways also. (just imagine what she was thinking after she said that statement).

dattebayo May 8th, 2007, 03:08 AM ^^ thanks, it's not very offensive though. I was just curious about the video because filipinos were also mentioned once in The Simpsons. :)
Askal82 May 10th, 2007, 01:28 AM ^^ She knows her geography. :)
Josepepe May 10th, 2007, 06:41 AM meron ako american friend dito sa Cali, akala nila ang mga pinoy pacific islanders together with the samoans etc. Pero I said NO, we are ASIANS.
why do people have to pigeon hole filipinos into labels with other cultures when there are differences. i think this is ridiculous and really racial if one takes a look at it closely. up to now i dont know what single similarity on language and culture really connotes being so-called asian as a sweeping generalization of filipinos in comparison with other "asians."
the austronesians to whom filipinos and other pacific islander groups like the samoans or hawaiians belong are a southern branch of the mongoloid "race". this doesnt mean that austronesians are chinese because the "chinese" are another branch of the mongoloid "race". though they both belong to the same racial category differentiating them from the caucasoid and the negroid.
are filipinos asians or pacific islanders? i think this is dumb. why cant people not accept who they are, in that filipinos, are hispanized austronesians by culture, as well as, asian by geography, and pacific islander because of the same family of language and cultures.
why cant we not just be filipinos instead of shortchanging ourselves by limiting ourselves to just asian or whatnot. asian is not a country nor a culture. asian has myriad of cultures and ethnic groups. why cant people not see it instead of being racialist about it.
we are filipinos with all our quirks. so what the heck is the matter with you people. we are simply filipinos.

bitoy May 10th, 2007, 05:08 PM ^^ Dude, people here have their own opinions about their identity.
Sure, we are simply Filipinos, people here are just identifying themselves for some reason such as on what to fill up on some legal documents or replies to certain question on ethnic backgrounds.

ravenhawk May 17th, 2007, 04:29 PM Since Philippines is rich in Rituals and Pamahiin let me share you a very rare ritual from Leyte. Not sure if its unique in Leyte but is very much practiced in there...
Lu-un
This ritual usually is being done to a person who had been said to be shocked, traumatized or unfocused. I think in tagalog it could also be eqauted with being "nausog". But it is said to be able to cleanse the spirit of any fear. It is normally being done by a "parag-luun" or tambalan. Though my grandmother herself knows how to do this ritual thats why I never failed to be "lu-un-ized" everytime Im in Leyte so as not to make this ritual extinct. The ritual normaly involves burning a coconut husk into another coconut husk. The smoke will then be circulated all over your body with some sort of spell or chanting. Then later the smoke will be dosed with water then again the steam wil be circulated around your body again. Later the tambalan would dip his finger into the husk filled with water and ashes and poke you later with his wet finger on various part of your body( ) After that he will whisper something in your head and spit into your "bumbunan" as a finale....
weird huh?
Any rituals that you can share?
kyle@1008 May 17th, 2007, 05:16 PM ^^ tuli....
Insanedriver May 17th, 2007, 05:38 PM ^^ Bumbuman?
We did a lot during my 5th and 6th grade... Because me and my classmates was so obsesed with Witchcraft because of that Damn Harry potter. Our Hogwarts System in the school (that had members from grades 4,5,6 1st and 2nd year high)
was converted into a witchcraft society where we do rituals and stuff both local (art of Mambabarangs and kultoism) and foreign(Wicca, Book of Shadows, Pentagram Symbol). So normally, we faced discriminations in the school society and were called weirdos and demons (duh, considering the school is a Catholic school run by Priests). I remember one thing we did, like levitation spells that goes like "light as a feather stiff as a board" and the rain incantations (oddly IT RAINS!!!, because we did it during rainy seasons...What the hell?)...
Anyways, scary stuffs to be part of it! My Obsession made me evil (in thinking) and worse < I shoplifted a 10 peso Comb in 7-11, to make it less suspicious i bought a gallon of ice cream and some snacks. OOT :D
ravenhawk May 17th, 2007, 06:28 PM ^^ bumbunan I mean

Haha! ako naman nung gradeschool sinubukan kong kulamin yung hinayupak kong seatmate na kawatan using some rituals I learned from my yaya. Aba efective! two weeks umabsent dahil nagka-high fever daw! kaya lang nung huli tumigil na ako.....baka kasi makarma eh!,yeah and it kinda make me evil as well;) kaya ganito na ako ngaun:angel:
kyle@1008 May 17th, 2007, 06:38 PM uy ... kumpleto na ang lineup ng mga tao sa SSC... may mga mangkukulam pala dito,...
so guys, be careful in posting your pics...
Insanedriver May 17th, 2007, 06:45 PM ^^ hehe Lolz... The Picture Kulam? we tried that too! but didnt work (of course) :bash: :D
I've just heard that the Hogwarts System we started in 2002 in my previous school was revived last January but didnt last... hehe Hindi Marunong Mag Lead yung Younger generations :P and it is considered illegal naman kasi para na siyang fraternity... Only...
Love Pill :naughty:
bukid May 18th, 2007, 05:55 PM i know the rituals you are talking about. it is also popular in ormoc and other parts of leyte. when we are sick, the ritual is also done to take away the curse and heal the person. and we do know some popular way of performing barang and lumay (gayuma).
ravenhawk May 18th, 2007, 06:07 PM ^^ nyaha bukid I forgot waray ka nga rin pala!,naku you also know some way of barang and gayuma? baka matakot na sa waray mga taga SSC nyan?
bukid May 18th, 2007, 08:02 PM all you need, both in barang and gayuma, is a piece of something that can represent the person like his shirt, his pen, his cap, his hair, or a picture basta may part ng tao na nandoon sa picture kahit daliri lang ang nakikita ayos na.
then a knowledge in the ancient incantations and make an offering, summoning the spirits of the ancestors dwelling in the forests and the sea to take your offering then you proceed with the ritual of barang or gayuma with more incantations.
for a more powerful barang and gayuma, you need a "virtud" that is kinda like a battery or a power source of that special energy that would ensure the effectivity of the barang and gayuma. the food of the "virtud" are the incantations and the rituals that recharged the power of the virtud.

:naughty:
bitoy May 19th, 2007, 08:50 PM Filipino Money Dance or Pin the Money
As Filipinos, we have this tradition of pinning paper bills to the bride and groom while they are dancing around aptly called 'Money Dance".
other countries have the same or almost the same variations of this ritual.

sloid May 26th, 2007, 03:46 AM I wanna headbutt filipino's who claim they're pacific islanders. We've been categorized as asians for so long, leave it at that.
There was this girl on my school bus and she was like, "Oh she's an asian filipino, I'm the Pacific Islander kind". If only she wasn't a friend of my friends, I would have given her a lecture lol.
Sinjin P. May 26th, 2007, 04:16 AM Weren't Filipinos always Asians? The way I see it, 'yong mga nasa Pilipinas na Pinoy, Asiano talaga ang tingin sa sarili, because that's what's being taught and then 'pag nakatuntong na sa ibang bansa (not necessarily all of them though), parang iniiba na ang identity para kalimutan kuno ang mga karanasan sa inang bayan. :dunno:

yes, filipinos are asian but we are also hispanic and pacific islander. we can leave all that jazz had we simply stuck to being filipino. filipinos who claim to be hispanic or asian or pacific islanders are not lying to themselves. they are all true to our identity and thats why we are filipino. to go to the lowest common denominator to attempt to pigeonhole us demeans us. being filipino covers all the bases that make up the totality of our historical and cultural experiences. instead of asian pride lets join hands and proclaim FILIPINO PRIDE.

How about just simply A HUMAN BEING? Does it really matter what background anybody has in their veins or blood? We all can feel, think, feels hunger, smiles, cry and what have you. Race, ethinicity is just a state of mind... Everybody has its own flaws or imperfections.
flesh_is_weak May 26th, 2007, 11:03 AM none of the above...we're Filipinos, a mix of the best (and sadly, some of the worst) of both worlds...
OtAkAw May 26th, 2007, 11:20 AM I hate categorizing Filipinos into either Asian or Pacific Islander because we are so different compared to those two. I've read in this thread that in some to-be-filled legal papers in the US, we are put in a separate category as "Filipino". I like that better because we exist in our own world (huh?).
No, seriously do you even like this classification thingy? Like I mean, we are people, we eat, we breathe air, we drink water, we poop, we sleep, I see no reason to fuss about these classifications.

Filipino Fo Sho. and i'll butt heads with anyone who forces me to say i am asian by nationality or culture. like i said those who claim a non-existent nationality or culture named "asian" really hates being filipino. i am filipino first and asian by geography label only. it is dead last and irrelevant to my being filipino.
btw. been there and done that as to pacific islanders. there is a connection in languages and pre-hispanic cosmology with pinoys.
Filipino Fo Sho. kung ayaw ninyo tanggapin ito bumalik na lang kayo sa bansang asia kung saan man lupalop iyun. good luck.

No similarities in language and culture??? There are alot of root words in any filipino languages that is similar to the other asian countries? Culture?? Filipinos might have spanish influences but you can still trace the similarities in culture as with the neighboring asian countries... So, it can not only be hispanized it's a blend of other culture also...
xDieselJockx May 27th, 2007, 12:40 AM Everyone's entitled to their opinions and we can't deny them that, you, and I mean everyone here, has no right to force the issue upon another if they see it differently from your own point of view. Just accept the fact that there's no right or wrong about it. All this is, is an endless pointless cycle of debating with no foreseeable conclusion or acceptable answer. Agree to disagree on the matter.
Yeah, it's a useless debate... It only would end up in a wrong opinion towards filipinos by other nationalities who happen to drop in and see the debates among filipinos in this thread. Filipinos might not care as to what other people all over the world would think about them, but I'm sure, they don't want to be looked down upon.
I mean. What's the deal? Filipino as asian, hispanized filipino??? Pacific Islander?? Does it really matter? Is it offensive?? Even if Josepepe is mistaken for a chinese, viet or thai? Is it like a curse to be mistaken as one? So what if you are a hispanized filipino?? big deal.... boooo hoooo

Probably the same question that would be asked if our basketball team ever had to play against a team from Latin America. "They're suppose to be Hispanic?"
I think it all depends on where in the country you've lived all your life. If you lived in the more Spanish influenced areas of the Luzon, Visayas, or Zamboanga, then you'd probably think Filipinos are Hispanic. If you've lived in an area with a lot of Chinoys, Moros, Igorot/Lumad, Asian expatriates, etc, then you'd think Filipinos are Asian.
If you think only one culture defines the Philippines, then you're probably close minded and enjoy bashing other Filipinos who you think are wrong and end up getting threads locked.

Elsongs May 27th, 2007, 09:57 AM A lot of Fil-Ams consider themselves Pacific Islander, mainly because they idolize Hawaiian culture (to the point where some of them consider themselves as "Hawaiians" rather than Filipinos), and the lesser-educated ones argue that they are Pacific Islanders because (I kid you not) "The Philippines are islands in the Pacific."
In that case, Japanese and Taiwanese are Pacific Islanders too :)
I personally consider myself a Los Angeleno even before I consider myself a Filipino or an American.

As far as I know Singapore's Official Languages are Mandarin (Chinese), Bahasa Melayu (Malays), Tamil (Indians), and English (Eurasians). I think they based it on that. Since you're Filipino and a "minority" that don't fall under those categories, you're being asked to fill in under "others" instead.

may mga balibalita na nabibili lang ang pangalan at ancestry sa samar. you can always declare yourself a filipino even if you don't have a miniscule drop of filipino blood by just going to samar and have someone declare you (for a small fee) as a kin. even if your mom is really a tongan or samoan or thai etc... and after you find a false relative who would attest you are their kin, you would go to the municipal registrar and make them do a birth certificate for you on the premise of late registration because di pa naman daw uso sa maraming lugar doon noon ang magparegister ng mga kapanganakan kaya maihahabol pa yan bayaran mo lang ang mga tao doon. :)

Of course Filipino came from the Malay race, however in Singapore and Malaysia since their main race is Malay, Chinese, Tamil, Eurasian and etc.
If you are Pinoy and you fill up a government form example Tax declaration - if you put your race as Malay when you are a Filipino then there will be confusion in their records. So they always reject for a Filipino to write in their government forms that they were of Malay race. You have to write under the race column your race is Filipino or Philippine.

Okay, I got another one. My mom (who's a nurse) told me this, and it's actually a true story...
An elderly Filipino man was being hospitalized in a big hospital in a major US city and he was in excruciating pain all day. The day shift nurse, an American, tended to this guy and heard his cries. So she went and gave him a cup of apple juice to satisfy his request. But he would not drink it.
An hour later, the old man cried in anguish again, and the American nurse once again gave him a cup of apple juice, which again he did not drink.
This went on until the evening, when the night shift nurse - a Filipina - took over. The day shift nurse explained to her how this old man kept crying for apple juice and but that he would not drink it when it was given to him.
Concerned, the Pinay nurse assured the other nurse that she would look into this situation.
When the man started crying in pain again, the Filipina night shift nurse rushed to his bedside and heard him loud and clear.
"APONG DIYOS!!!!" he screamed.

only 3.6 of filipinos have hispanic and american ancestry... 2% are hispanic
therefore it's kinda overhyped and pathetic to call ourselves filipinos as asian amercian or hispanic asian....
Our neighbors indonsia and malaysia had also been colonies with mixed ancestries and hong kong and macau and had also been colonies...
But you dont see them often to mind it or argue or think about it too much. It's only here in the philippines becoz some people dont want to be called pinoy becoz they want to be affiliated with spansih or american ancestry becoz they want to be classified as belonging to the higher hierachy.
But people from other countries when they see us we just overall malay asians and i don't know what got into some of the forumers heads here to insist and think that we filipinos are spanish and we are latin country when we are not.

Josepepe June 2nd, 2007, 06:44 AM http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filipinos_of_Spanish_descent
only 3.6 of filipinos have hispanic and american ancestry...
But people from other countries when they see us we just overall malay asians and i don't know what got into some of the forumers heads here to insist and think that we filipinos are spanish and we are latin country when we are not.
so easiet way to know is look in mirror plsss.... end of story... :)
huh? binasa mo ba ang mga sinulat ko? who said anything about ancestry? its the cultural influence that defines filipinos. but be that as it may your figure of 2% spanish ancestry or whatever european ancestry you read somewhere is disputable. thats not even the point i am making. it is your exaggeration in describing asian or asia as if there is a single race, nationality and culture in asia. yan lang po. and as for your higher hierarcy argument basahin mo at intindihin mo ang sulat ko.
datu bagnot the as panic lander hehehe

isa ka pa. kailangan mo siguro magsalamin. ano namang kabalbalan ang sinulat mo. here are the points i made: cultural influences. identities. what makes a filipino filipino. the proper reading of geographical identities and not some misrepresentation that there is such a thing as an asian race. well, mahirap talagang umintindi sa utak na nakatanim sa guniguni at lagim.

Different races are socio-politically defined by different factors and most of the time each person have a different opinion.
For those who have a problem with their identity, just check all the boxes that you think that are appropriate on any official forms that you need to fill.
Most of the time, they are just for statistical purpose.
On casual conversation with other people of a different race, say what ever you want to be. You can even say you are hispanic but you have to be one.
Which I know most of you guys know how to. :bash:
kiretoce June 2nd, 2007, 07:30 AM ^^ @tsinoy: dude you're hilarious! :hilarious
To everyone:
I say, keep your opinions to yourselves since they're yours and yours alone anyway, no need influencing other people whose minds are already made up. Getting another human being to see things your way makes you look desperate and insecure. I say be all of them, we Filipinos are "mutts" anyway, we can be anything we want to be if we believe we can do it. So y'all stop complaining, campaigning, and slinging mud at each other. Just be.

no, its not a matter of personal opinion but the truth. more often than not it is the one value that is the casualty with the constant labeling and parceling of my country. the filipino identity is defined by factors of culture, history and oh yes geography. my point is simple enough that even a grade one pupil can understand it. i am filipino. with all the factors that made my nation and my country what i am. filipino pride sa madaling salita. i dont give a hoot about the continent with a myriad of cultures and nations. bansa ko muna bago sila.

kiretoce June 3rd, 2007, 04:58 PM Filipinos here can't really be pigeon-holed into a box. We run the gamut of being the fairest skinned (white), across the spectrum, to the darkest of the dark skinned. I once was watching the Alma Awards (Hispanic Media Awards) and there was this comic that said, "You know, we Latinos have blonde and blue-eyed people like Cameron Diaz. We also have Black Latinos like Sammy Sosa (baseball player). Pretty soon, all of us will look like Filipinos!"
So you can see, people see us Filipinos in varying degrees here in the US. You can be viewed as Asian, Latino, White, Black, and Pacific Islander.

A funny Youtube video comment about Filipinos.
That's the kid's opinion on what he learned from school and from the streets.
He's a Vietnamese/American and have some Asian friends mostly Filipinos.
He is learning from all kinds of responses on his video. I would love to take a shot on his opinions and put down some comments but there are just so much already and some are amazing facts.
TJ June 5th, 2007, 01:39 PM That kid is igonorant and know nothing.. he said those of us who have spanish last names are have spanish parents or ancestry so they are filipino-spanish which then makes almost all of us filipino-spanish because almost all pinoys have spanish last names..
but the truth is only 2% of our population has links with having spanish blood or ancestry and not all that have spanish last name are that of spanish ancestry or blood.
And he also said we are not asian because we are separted from the continent and we are in the pacific ocean... lol and call us pacific islanders
Pacific islanders are the ploynesians, and aboriginees and not us.
Our ancestors came from borneo we belong to the malay indo race.. which is asian and not pacific islanders.
If he is correct then we should also call australinas and new zealanders pacific islanders.
He is dumb he thinks when speaking asian it must be only chinese related with, yellow skin and slanted eyes and using kung fun yin yang symbols.. lol lol...

You know how Canadians and Mexicans don't want to be called Americans eventhough they're also part of America (North America to be exact)? The whole world has come to know Oriental or Asia as pertaining to only Chinese-Japanese cultures and appearance. And the whole world knows America as only the United States. :)
The Filipinos are a mixed group. IMO they can be classified into different categories based on their physical appearance alone.
1. Negritos/Aetas, the first settlers, the Philippines' aborigines who resemble the Melanesians more and are culturally linked to Pacific Islanders.
2. Morenos, the brown majority who are either Hispanic/Christian or Muslim. They are the Malay-Polynesian(Pacific Islander) type of Asian who are culturally detached from their neighbours save for the Moros.
3. Chinos, the chinese-japanese-korean-viet filipinos who are the closest to the Asian stereotype. Their yellowish skin and slanted eyes make them noticeably different from the majority.
4. Blancos, the white filipino minority who are mostly Spanish. They can be classified under Caucasian or Hispanic depending on their ethnic background. They are also sometimes mistaken for mestizo.
5. Mestizos, the mixed filipino who would either blend with the Morenos or the Chinos (Chinitos) depending on their mix.

I know what Oriental stands for, my reply was just a cliche from Manila/PI being the former "Pearl Of The Orient"
By the way, you forgot to list down Austronesians from Taiwan or the Taiwanese Aborigines.
We are really a mixed breed but you can tell a Filipino easily pag Pinoy pa rin siya. :D
xDieselJockx June 6th, 2007, 06:47 PM I know for sure that the asian americans in the states doesn't want to be refered to as "orientals". For what reason ? I don't know.. I overheard an elderly japenese gentleman who works out in the same gym i go to that his daughter refused to be called or refered to as "oriental" because she said "I'm not a rug and i feel I am being insulted to be refered to as one, asian american is more acceptable to me.."
Why is it really a big deal for most filipinos to stress something like " I am filipino hawaiian" " I am a filipino but I have spanish blood in me" " I am a mestiso/sa" " I have a mixture of this and that breed/race"?? As if they are really proud to tell the world the world and most especially their fellow filipinos that they are light skinned or mixed race... most other countries takes offense to it.. Same here in the states... one of my close friend who is also a caucasian american happens to have a little bit of an asian features was asked by I believe a filipino gentleman (but i'm not really positive) if he has any japanese heritage or whatever asian race it was he mentioned. My friend didn't take that very well, he did remain level headed and polite, but I can tell what's up ...
tigidig14 June 6th, 2007, 07:13 PM ^haha true, i know a friend girl that would say same thing and shes ugly.
thats why i notice that the ugly filipino would usually say this im half of that, half of this  retarded i mean i certainly believe if they say half horse and half human. my point is dont say youre half this half that when not needed to or i have lithuanian blood or japanese ancestry when its phony. though i agree that you should b supportive of yourself if you acquired great genes from your moms and pops. but pls dont lie to yourself because if you dont believe yourself why should i believe you
o-thought for the day
kiretoce June 6th, 2007, 07:17 PM The term "Oriental" (I guess it's the Asian's "N-word") is used most oftenly to describe inanimate objects, ie: oriental rug, oriental vase, etc. People from Asia or are of Asian descent/heritage are simply called Asians. :colgate:
The term is also archaic and non-PC in today's society, and it's most associated with the each nations' colonial past.
bitoy June 6th, 2007, 07:47 PM ^^
"Oriental" has been used by the West as a term to describe cultures, countries, peoples and goods from the Orient.
Eastern, Far Eastern, Arabs, etc
There is just so much "political correctness" in the mind of everyone so those words are sometimes labeled as derogatory or archaic.
But hey, when it comes to an Oriental Massage, especially in Las Vegas, woooooo!!!

During the olden times, especially in Europe, the friars even the pope have some ladies in waiting. Check some histories of the catholic chruch and you'd be surprised.
In our province in Bicol, I know of a family who's been known to be the descendants of a Spanish friar during the Spanish period. But that's not uncommon, even in the metro-manila area, even a bishop of the northern town of Antipolo was accused of keeping a mistress.
and to your question : bakit nagkaanak ang pari?
Tao lang siya at malamang mahilig.

Read again my friend.... Besides?? What is really your whole point in trying to get the people here believe what you wanted to believe? First of? You gave up your filipino citizenship and lived in this country instead of fighting your cause in your native Philippines... Aren't you even ashamed of yourself for doing that? If you want to be an american, be an american, if you want to be a filipino, be a filipino, no either or... such a cowardice act for all i care.... It's appalling to even hear you preach on your fellow filipinos when you yourself can't keep yourself true to yourself...

amigo32 June 9th, 2007, 06:02 AM Glutathione (metathione brand) is now being advertised on local TVs as a whitening product.
Lili June 9th, 2007, 06:03 AM ^ Why? What was it used for before? I read somewhere that Lucy Torres Gomez, as white as she is, still takes those whitening pills. I don't think those are readily available here in the US. What we have a lot of here are Sunless Tanning lotions. I actually use that (Coppertone Endless Summer) for my legs.

tj_brewed June 9th, 2007, 06:09 PM One thing I noticed in The Philippines especially in Manila is the popularity and usage of skin whitening products. They may be Block & White, Ponds or Extraderm but I noticed that alot of Filipinas in The Philippines would like to have fair skin. It's a big contrast compared to alot of Filipina-Americans who would prefer "chocolate brown" skin :D
What do you think?
Beauty is subjective. And the standard varies from one location to another. Generally, in the Philippines, being under the Spanish regime for hundreds of years gave us this impression that being beautiful is about looking like a mestizo or a mestiza with fairer or whiter complexion. Well, I personally wanna look like that too.. weeeeeeeeee......Coz for me, people with fair complexions look neat and any type of clothing or color would suit them well. Bagay sa mga mapuputi kung baga....
That's why the skin whitening industry is a hit here in our country. Glutathione is effective! That's for sure! It's an antioxidant with a side effect which is skin whitening. But you need to take certain doses to enjoy its side effect. U gotta take 40 mg of Glutathione per 1 kg of your weight. So if you are around 130 lbs, you gotta take around 2400 mg of glutathione per day (that's around 5 tablets of glutathione in a day considering that one tablet is consist of 500 mg gluta). You can see the effect after a month or two - depending on your original skin color. It would be better if your taking the reduced form of glutathione with alpha lipolic and vitamin c.
But, if you do not wanna take something, skin whitening lotions are also effective. Hmmmm based on experience, the following items are a ok:
*YSA Skin Whitening Lotion (in a tube) - effective and can whiten your skin within 10 days...Ive tried it! ok na ok!
*Biolink Skin Whitening Lotion - ok din especially when u use it with Biolink Soap. They say that the green papayas can whiten your skin faster and more effective than yellow papayas.
*Godiva Skin Whitening Lotion - effective din. It has licorice which is found to be an effective ingredient for skin whitening.
For soap, you can also use the following:
*YSA Bleaching Soap - yung black color tapos brown ang box.
*Biolink Soap - yung green papaya, wag yung bago nila na may virgin coconut oil.
* Skin White - one of my favorites too..mabango and effective
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Just this March, I had a chicken pox. The only way for me to get rid of my chicken pox scars is to lighten my skin especially dun sa may mga marks. I used VMV Hypoallergenics' Illuminants Program. It is really effective. After 2 months of using it, i have no sign of dark chicken pox scars - yung deep, brownish na may pagkared. Ofcourse, d nawala yung scar tlga pero since pumuti yung area, d na visible yung scars.
Now if you do not want to use any commercialized solutions or programs at all, there are skin whiteners na we can found in our own kitchen.
You may use the following -
1. Lemon
2. Papaya
3. Milk
4. Honey
^^ Cguro may iba pa, but those are what ive tried pa...so happy skin whitening peeps!
Insanedriver June 9th, 2007, 06:11 PM i dont like a white skin, they look like a corpse or something...
Tanned or darker complexion is what i like the best...
thank god i didnt get my mom's color
tj_brewed June 9th, 2007, 06:16 PM ^^ gee..wag naman yung sobrang white...i dont wanna look like the Adams too..
ok yung fair na may pagka pinkish..ehehehehe...I was lucky that i was born with a fair skin. I got it from my mom - intsik. Kaso, circumstances in the past damaged my skin..huhuhuhuh things like CAT, ROTC, and other activities under the heat of the sun.
Right now, i used certain line so i can maintain my complexion (and ok din if may maging fairer weeeeeeeee) and protect me from the damaging sun rays...
I guess all of us are aware of photoaging... anyway, currently im using a lotion with SPF 60. Sobrang init kc dito sa pinas!
le Reine June 9th, 2007, 10:22 PM Sino nag-try na dito ng Likas papaya soap? Effective ba iyon? My friends say it is... I just can't believe them. Meron pa yung iniinom eh. Bumili kanina yung friend ko. Php60 a bottle. And you need to drink 2 bottles a day! Ano yun ginto?
tj_brewed June 9th, 2007, 11:39 PM ^^ I think ur referring to Glutathione in liquid form. Ive read that once in one of our local lifestyle mags. It is better daw than its capsule form coz it is easily distributed to your system.
If it's 60 pesos, mura pa nga yan eh. A reduced glutathione would averagely cost you around 3,000 pesos a bottle. With 30 capsules per bottle, thats 100 pesos per capsule. And you gotta take an average 4 capsules a day depending on your weight and gluta's milligram per capsule.
So 60 pesos a day or 120 for two bottles of it compared to 400 pesos a day? then the liquid form gluta your friend is drinking is affordable.
Glutathione also got an injectable form. It's 4,000 pesos per injection. And you need to take atleast 10 shots. That's 40,000 pesos...
And yes, it is effective. It's being recommended by most dermatologists.
tigidig14 June 9th, 2007, 11:45 PM YES skin cancer is recommended by most derma

Sinjin P. June 10th, 2007, 09:51 AM Yeah, generally, all papaya soap brands (even the ones without brands  ) are effective. But for me, Silka and Biolink Green Papaya have been the most consistent. :)

Part of being vain. Okay naman, it has worked very well for me to the extent na napapagkamalan na akong artista sa mall ;) Maglagay din kayo ng VCO sa face, leave it for an hour, then rinse and use your moisturizing soap or pwede rin yung papaya soap, nakakashock ang instant results

I'm fair. But there were times when my skin darkened due to major sun exposure and i needed to get my old skin back. So I actually used some of those ive mentioned -
Glutathione / green papaya soap and whitening soap/ hand and body lotion.
Then after my chicken pox this year which left me some scars I also used VMV Hypoallergenics' Illuminants.
But ofcourse, now I have quitted the other items mentioned above, now that I have my regained my natural color. I only use those when necessary. :)

Obssession is different from trying to improve one's physical appearance. And improving one's appearance varies from one person's preference of beauty to another. It's subjective.

Malakas din naman ang benta ng Sun Tanning Lotion and Sun Tanning Spray here. In our micro team alone here at work, I have friends who spend much just to get that golden brown tone. Yun kc uso pag summer.

It's effective.. But try to stay away from it bro. It has hydroquinone. This chemical is banned in US and other countries kc nakaka cause ng skin cancer.
Sinjin P. June 10th, 2007, 02:07 PM ^ I haven't used it pa nga. And I have no plans of using it at all since I'm satisfied with the results of VCO + green papaya soap. And, if you use it, you'll have to stay at home or else masusunog ka sa labas since all your pores are opened thus exposing your skin to the direct heat of the sun
alexela June 10th, 2007, 02:07 PM ^^ talaga? eh bakit dito ok lang?
tj_brewed June 10th, 2007, 02:08 PM it's funny that brown people wants to be white while the white people wants to be brown...
explains how unfair the world is
Not really...I think, beauty is being something which is not common to a particular group.
For example, sa Pinas - a number of people would find chinese and koreans as cute or goodlooking kc chinito sila or singkit.
But in Korea, people like pinoys or artistas na d singkit o mejo malaki yung mata.
The Americans love ethnic beauty - like those here sa Pinas.
While some Pinoys would prefer those who are tisoy looking like those in America.
tj_brewed June 10th, 2007, 02:11 PM ^^ talaga? eh bakit dito ok lang?
Actually, d sya ok bro...kc if you'll talk with dermatologists, they would not recommend such product. And ilang beses na rin yan na feature sa news about men and women using it na nasisira yung skin in the long run.
Hydroquinone makes ur skin thinner and more prone to disorders. It makes the skin tissue more delicate. Kaya if you've noticed those na gumagamit ng maxipeel - ang ninipis ng skin and reddish.
tj_brewed June 10th, 2007, 02:12 PM ^^ But for me......the best way to have a beautiful skin without using anything at all......is having a SAUNA! I just love doing that! It will detoxify and get rid of your skin impurities. It will not whiten your skin but it will make it glow!

Beyond Whitening, here are some of the tips that can help you get that beautiful skin:
- Eat fruits and vegetables
- sleep atleast 8 hours a day ( eto guilty ako....huhuhuhuhuhuhuhu)
- stay away from bad foods ( u know what i mean)
- drink atleast 8 glasses of water
- drink your vitamins (or anti oxidants if u got). - pero optional

Yup, according to a survey, Filipino men are the most vain in Asia. I've read that last year in PDI.
tj_brewed June 10th, 2007, 05:33 PM ^^ oh by the way, metrosexuals are now being threatened by the new breed of men - UBERSEXUALS! Are u one of em?
The term "ubersexual" is derived from the German uber, meaning "the greatest," and sexual, meaning "let's bump uglies." The word owes its origins to JWT, the largest advertising agency in America, and was especially created for a new book entitled The Future of Men, co-authored by Marian Salzman, Ira Matathia and Ann O'Reilly..
The men leading this charge are ubersexuals. According to Salzman, "Ubersexuals are the most attractive (not just physically), most dynamic, and most compelling men of their generations. They are confident, masculine, stylish, and committed to uncompromising quality in all areas of life."

^^ Ahh....but there's a groundswelling of backlashes against the Metro/Uber movement here. Men are getting tired of it and they just want to get back to the norm, which is just being simple, decent, and clean. No more of that mani/pedi, facials, perfectly coiffed do, and other superficial crap. That explains why the show "Queer Eye" got canceled because people aren't interested anymore, and the rise of the hit comedy "My Name Is Earl" is an indication of the trend changing. It was a fad and fads come and go like the wind.
tj_brewed June 10th, 2007, 05:40 PM ^^ hmmmm, u mean men on the other side? Hmmm i think not. With the emergence of a number of facial centers for men, beauty lines for men, health and fitness plus beauty magazines for men....I would have to say - that whether straight or not - Filipino men are becoming more conscious with the way they act and look.
oboi June 10th, 2007, 05:46 PM Perhaps the trend that is happening in the U.S. isn't applicable here in the Philippines or hasn't caught on the Philippines yet.
And btw, I like to watch "My Name is Earl."

Mani and Pedi? hmmmmmm my bestfriend is an ubersexual but he doesnt do that! I havent tried that either and i cant see myself getting one...i cut my own nails..eheheheheh and we dont go to that point of superficiality.
Queer Eye - i find them maarte and sobrang conscious in a superficial level. Simple, clean, and decent - that's what we are aiming for. And that's the difference between metrosexuals and ubersexuals - well according to that book:
the differences between uber and metro
Passion
Ubersexuals are passionate about business, politics and global affairs.
Metrosexuals are passionate about themselves. Go ahead, just ask them!
Source of inspiration
Ubersexuals follow their experience and reason.
Metrosexuals follow Carson Kressley.
Priorities
Ubersexuals are concerned with the world around them.
Metrosexuals are concerned with their calorie intake.
Emotional level
Ubersexuals are emotionally available.
Metrosexuals are emotionally vacant.
Money
Ubersexuals invest their money in sound business strategies.
Metrosexuals invest their money in exfoliant.
Grooming
Ubersexuals shave daily, if need be.
Metrosexuals can tell you the exact time of their next Brazilian.
Obsessions
Ubersexuals are obsessed with quality and integrity.
Metrosexuals are obsessed with their buns.
famous ubersexuals - Puff Daddy, JayZ, Bradd Pitt, Michael Jordan and Simon Cowell

tj_brewed June 10th, 2007, 05:53 PM ^^ now back to the topic about skin whitening and filipinas, i think another reason why FILIPINAS want to have a whiten skin - in general, is because of the preference of FILIPINOS. I gotta admit, a white / fair pinay would easily catch my attention. But of course, that doesnt mean that I dont like brown filipinas too....I like Tricia Chongbian - she is morena.
le Reine June 10th, 2007, 05:58 PM ^^ oh by the way, metrosexuals are now being threatened by the new breed of men - UBERSEXUALS!
Me? ubersexual? I don't know. Honestly, I'm not familiar with these labels. I just treat them as one group-homosexuals. I don't think I'm attractive whether physically or in any other aspects. I'm just me. That's how I look at myself.
tj_brewed June 10th, 2007, 06:04 PM ^^ I was not talking about sexual preference.
Anyway, u have a point to...these labeling were made by marketing strategists... oh well, just do ur part..clean up and be decent....metro or uber - as long as u live a life in a culture of excellence (physical, emotional, mental, financial, and spiritual) - then that's it...ur on the right track!
and ei..dont tell urself that ur not attractive..tsk tsk tsk..that's an insult to the Highest Being who created u. He said, that u were created by His own image and likeness.. Thus, u are magnificence in human form.
tj_brewed June 10th, 2007, 06:06 PM Now going back to the topic : Filipinas and skin whitening.
Although, I like Tricia Chongbian - morena and sporty, i like Amanda Griffin, fair, smart, angelic, and palaban! and oh Donita Rose too.
kiretoce June 21st, 2007, 07:43 PM We must cast off colonial mentality (http://www.guampdn.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070622/OPINION02/706220324/1014/OPINION)
Recently, I browsed through a national Philippine entertainment magazine and examined the photos of celebrities and advertisement models in it. Soon afterward, I spotted a common trait. Most of the stars, men included, had much lighter skin complexions than many would consider natural-looking for Filipinas and Filipinos.
Many Pinays and Pinoys think a milky white skin tone is more attractive than darker skin, in the same way Caucasians prefer the tanned look. This inclination is most prevalent in the Philippines but many Filipino-Guamanians secretly share this mindset, depending upon their upbringing.
According to a survey of over 2,000 women in 10 Asian countries, Filipinas are more preoccupied with skin-whitening than undergoing cosmetic procedure. The study was commissioned by the Dove brand and the Women's Media Circle, a nonprofit government organization involved in women empowerment.
Facial cleansers and soaps blatantly advertised to whiten skin have been around for decades, but I did manage to discover some new products. I saw an ad for "Gluta Snow," bottled water designed to "cleanse" and "whiten you." It contains L-Glutathione, supposed to turn dark pigmentations to light pigmentations. The ad copy for the water reads "get healthy, wealthy, and white!"
Then, there's a dietary supplement called "Met Tathione." According to literature on the product's Web site, www.whitebeautyphilippines.com, "The Bureau of Food and Drugs approves the product with no known side effects. There is a good side effect, however, and that is skin whitening." The supplement's slogan? "Be Enlightened!"
Now, if we go beyond the surface of this subject, there's a phenomenon that needs further examination. Why are Pinays and Pinoys intrigued with lightening their skin?
The first reason is the presence of colonial mentality, meaning "a notion of inferiority amongst populations previously subjugated and colonized by foreign entities." Through intermarriages with the Spanish and Americans, the physical traits of some Filipinos -- especially their skin, have taken on the look of such foreigners. As an extension, colonial mentality conditions our kababayans to believe that lighter-skinned Filipinos are better looking than their darker, indigenous counterparts because they resemble their former rulers.
In the Philippine publication "Graphic Magazine," Manuel L. Quezon Jr. explained, "A good, healthy brown never attract(s) admiration among us. A light-skinned man or woman with Filipino features will be called, respectively 'simpatico' (pleasant) or 'simpatica.' A dark-skinned person with more or less good Caucasian feature(s) may be called good-looking kaya lang maitim (but is dark). A fair-skinned person with mediocre or rather good Caucasian features will immediately be called maganda (pretty)."
Secondly, Pinoys are also altering their appearance for survival. Quezon asserted: "Features and coloring are often connected with social and economic position and possibilities." There's a false assumption that someone who is dark-skinned is uneducated, works outdoors and is from a lower socio-economic class. While on the contrary, a person who is fair-skinned is supposedly educated and has, or is capable of holding, a cushy, white-collar job.
Thus, some companies in the country employ lighter-skinned individuals to work in "front-line" occupations. Conversely, those perceived to be less attractive aren't hired or are given lesser-paying jobs.
Furthermore, the media and the influential Philippine movie industry continually define standards for attractiveness. Most of the country's cinema idols have mixed ethnicities, possess atypical Pinoy features and are admired for their looks over talent.
In this modern age, it's absurd that individuals use skin tones to influence their attitudes and perceptions. We should accept who we naturally are. No one should feel compelled to change the color of their skin to feel attractive, gain acceptance or to seek opportunities.
Using skin-whitening products isn't a step forward; it's a leap backward. It allows colonial mentality and destructive stereotypes to continually cloud our conscience -- and for generations to come. Such products fail to instill pride and acceptance in the unique identity and appearance of our kababayans. Instead, they cultivate shame and self-loathing for who we are.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with being brown. Brown is beautiful!

The first reason is the presence of colonial mentality, meaning "a notion of inferiority amongst populations previously subjugated and colonized by foreign entities."
I wouldn't think it's colonial mentality. I would forward the thesis that it's more of because there are fewer of the fair skinned pinoy variety, a premium is put on them. simply put, dahil marami ng maitim na pinoy, maganda ang tingin natin sa kakaunting white leghorn.
Rolls-Royce June 22nd, 2007, 03:44 PM A lot of foreigners like our colour. Pero marami rin sa kanila ang mapanlait. Di alam ng lahat sa 'tin na maraming teenager na puti na nilalait nila ang Asians and orientals the way we look.
alexela June 22nd, 2007, 03:54 PM i love my dark skin.

Animo June 23rd, 2007, 11:02 PM Have you guys seen the Chinese? They are much worst on this mentality. I have encountered this Chinese woman who have this red sun helmet that she wears so that she will not get "dark" even if she has the most abnormal "white skin" that I have even seen.
Sinjin P. June 24th, 2007, 08:45 AM ^ After all, all these products come from there ;)

lazybum July 6th, 2007, 08:28 PM There appears to be a growing sense of pride and nationalism from Filipinos not only those in the country today but also from Pinoys or former Pinoys permanently residing in so many foreign countries.
Is there a real and genuine desire to move the country forward? If there is, from you own personal perspective, what does this mean to you and where do you want to take this country going forward?
kiretoce July 6th, 2007, 08:49 PM You can take a Filipino out of the Philippines. But you can't take the Philippines out of a Filipino. :okay:
crappypants July 6th, 2007, 09:36 PM I really want to see the PHils conquer poverty. Her people have been suffering for so long while the few elite and politicians lavish and languish.
I do not wish her to be the most powerful and richest country I just want her to chean house and be able to provide descent lives
for her children without resorting to enslaving her children to her neighbors.
being nationalistic to me means doing any little thing you think can positively add in realizing this .
lazybum July 6th, 2007, 10:08 PM I am inviting all kababayans wherever you may be, to share your thoughts and passion on this subject. I think for once, we can all agree that this is very important to us all. It's time to make our collective voices be heard.
Thank you all for participating. Your country needs you more than ever...
flymordecai July 7th, 2007, 12:15 AM I'm Philippines-born, moved to the US at a young age. In the past year or so, I've gotten a huge surge of nationalism inside of me. Before, I didn't care much about the Philippines and what happened there. After discovering SSC almost 2 years ago, I've learned so much about the happenings over there. I'm now very interested in the well-being of the Philippines. In fact, right now I'm considering the possibility of moving back when I'm older and having a family there. I want my kids to be Filipino and contribute to the Philippines society because I don't like what's going on with Filipinos choosing to leave the country. So there's definitely been a drastic change in my sense of pride and interest in the Philippines.
TJ July 7th, 2007, 09:42 AM my sig says it all... :P
bariQ July 7th, 2007, 10:16 AM I LOVE THE PHILIPPINES!!!! i put my rosary and the PHil flag on my rearview mirrors
wag sana natin kalimutan ang ating pagkapilipino... i dont want us just to be an invisible minority, just because we assimilate easily.

I think the surge is partially due to the fact of the emergence of TFC and PInoyTV!
