I think it looks out dated. But it will get fixed soon..
caw123 January 21st, 2006, 11:51 PM Horrible. 2/10.
wjfox January 22nd, 2006, 10:25 AM How tall is this building?
caw123 January 22nd, 2006, 02:36 PM Just how much importance do you place on height?
JDRS January 22nd, 2006, 03:37 PM 4/10 a disgrace
Bachy Soletanche January 23rd, 2006, 09:06 PM Which bit are we voting on, the 'orrible Concreat stuff or the Ghastly neo-Stalinist block behind it?
Canela January 23rd, 2006, 11:47 PM its too long, if it was just a tower it'd look much better. rents are cheap in there though if you can survive the 2 year waiting list..
Insignia January 24th, 2006, 12:21 AM ...
Zim Flyer January 24th, 2006, 11:42 AM It is a horrible buidling and is the personification off all that was wrong in the 1960's.
Compare it to the Nottingham Victoria that stood there before along with the Great Central Railway before both were demolished by the short sited politicians of the 1960's :ohno:

caw123 February 2nd, 2006, 06:45 PM ^^ why did you revive this thread asshole?
Touchy bastard. You've taken the photos down because the building has got (Deserved) low votes. Pathetic.

LeeUK February 2nd, 2006, 08:12 PM This building is a disgrace, I am ashamed that it is my city, lots of great things happening in most UK cities except Nottingham.!
Zenith February 3rd, 2006, 12:59 PM An awful disgusting and sickening building. Like was said before, it says everything about the 1960's, a decade of illusion. I weep enough for what was destroyed in Birmingham, yet this is equally as bad.
I would go as far to say 'How dare they!' and If I could I would make the authorities rebuild every single beautiful building they destroyed !
I will not vote on this building as it doesant deserve a 1
Karate_Kev February 3rd, 2006, 02:47 PM could be made semi-decent with a reclad and a bit of trimming...

Bim February 4th, 2006, 03:02 PM ^^ That looks like North Tower in Manc city centre!!

Hotbird_Saudia May 20th, 2006, 04:53 PM when is this getting knocked down?
Insignia May 20th, 2006, 05:04 PM Beeching Axe anyone?
El_Greco May 21st, 2006, 09:29 PM 4/10
bantam May 22nd, 2006, 12:58 AM I honestly can't understand why everyone thinks this is the worst building ever to grace this planet. It's obviously not the best but there's hundreds more in this country that are much worse. I actually quite like the shape and the exposed core. I think it would look like a decent mid-rise with a good re-clad, although I'm probably in the minority. On the other hand, the shopping centre below it has no redeeming features and most definitely needs knocking down.
Insignia May 22nd, 2006, 01:12 PM It isn’t really that bad when compared the Guild Centre in Preston or the Etap Hotel in Birmingham but this isn’t an excuse. Some Glass cladding would do and i'm sure there is something planned. We just have to wait.
Stefan88 August 9th, 2006, 11:55 PM I know its an ugly building but think how boring the skyline would be without it. it gives a sense of size to the city centre. it could do with a much deserved reclad however which will prolong its lifespan and increase the aesthetic look of the building. the shopping centre could do with a reclad aswell. if demolition was an option think how much hassle that would cause to the tenants and to general movement of traffc aroun that area.
bantam August 10th, 2006, 02:17 AM I'd like to see the core/shaft thing clad in solar panels a la CIS tower, with the windows replaced with dark blue reflective glass to match. The rest should then be clad with aluminium a la Bridgewater Place in Leeds (or whatever metal that is). That would be amazing.
bantam August 10th, 2006, 02:20 AM Oh yeah and put twin spires on top of the core/shaft thing. Even better.
potto August 12th, 2006, 03:28 PM http://www.skyscrapernews.com/images/pics/1841VictoriaCentreFlatsA_pic1.jpg
This seems to have won some local sentiment, but really is an appauling building, so dominant without any attention to detail. Hate the way the cladding ie window and brick, is cheap design work and completely disjointed. These buildings were built on a shoe-string budget before we realised the hidden costs of trapping humans in an oppressive uban landscape.

The magic of cladding could easily make this building suitable for the casual eyes, :). Or infact it'll be better of destroyed and something (tall) new rebuild in its location.
Abdi December 3rd, 2006, 06:57 PM its buildings like that in the UK that needs to be demolished and insignia you gave it a 10

and...
there's no official measurement (or atleast i havn't set any) so 10/10 could mean to me what someone else rates as 3/10.
Zenith December 5th, 2006, 10:15 PM The people who think theres nay merit in this building need their ffing eyes and heads examined...
FOr christ sake......have you actually seen what this replaced? Once we actually used to know how to build human, handsome and beautifully crafted buildings..
This is shite, and there are no excuses
Leeds No.1 December 5th, 2006, 10:52 PM 2/10. It redefines the word "ugly".
mistertee December 6th, 2006, 01:42 AM I think it's fantastic. There's what, 23 floors, on a podium, and it's only 75m? It looks like a big New York apartment block, its boasts the same hue and is similarly haphazard.
It's obvioulsy not a fancy glimmering glass skyscraper, but it's not without its charms. 7
Orgoglioso December 6th, 2006, 11:08 PM :ohno: i don't like it at all, ugly concrete block, what makes it worse is that it's long as well 1/10
Stefan88 December 6th, 2006, 11:19 PM I think it's fantastic. There's what, 23 floors, on a podium, and it's only 75m? It looks like a big New York apartment block, its boasts the same hue and is similarly haphazard.

It's 25 floors not that makes much of a difference. The floor to ceiling height must be quite low to squeeze 246 feet into 25 floors. I still quite like it anyway because of the shear bulk of it. I must 1 of a minority of people who like it but nvm I live here so i dont care what people from other cities think really.

Oh and I dont know if you noticed, but Nottingham isnt New York..and this building is shite.
Monters December 7th, 2006, 02:28 AM "Nottingham isn't New York" - if you think like that then Nottingham never will amount to anything. A city has to have ambition surely.
I gave it a five out of ten. It's bulky and lumpen and insensitive, but it's not actually ugly and at least it livens up Nottingham's non-skyline.
/the old Victoria Station was nice enough - much more handsome than the surviving Nottingham Midland, certainly. But the real tragedy IMO was the closing of the railway not the demolition of the station.
Bim December 7th, 2006, 03:06 AM It looks like it's made from cardboard...like something out of that DB Boulevard video!
NothingBetterToDo December 7th, 2006, 05:09 AM 4/10
Paint it white, give it black windows and i think it would look pretty good. But at the moment its overbearing and ugly.
Abdi December 12th, 2006, 07:21 PM It looks like it's made from cardboard...like something out of that DB Boulevard video!
lol this photo is buidling is getting finished
nottseagle94 January 19th, 2007, 07:05 PM its horrible. i think the thing should just get clad entirely in solar panels; it could be trinity squares sole power source. sod the windows. clad them aswell, the people inside can suffocate. bah. 1/10
lol
Subliving January 20th, 2007, 09:56 PM I give it 2/10. Merit is given for the bricks, which can be reused later.
Subliving.
Rob January 23rd, 2007, 09:46 PM 5/10, I can see where people are coming from with their dislike of this one, it's finishes are dull and it's outline is ungraceful to say the least. But it is imposing and and dominant when you drive into central Nottingham (there's not much in Nottingham you can say that about) and it does have some kind of fascination about it, it does draw the eye; perhaps it's just the height and bulk combined with the bland striped effect of the floors.
mark*ie January 24th, 2007, 04:28 PM 2/10 An architectural disaster !
Biosonic January 24th, 2007, 04:31 PM Striking (for the wrong reasons) but some effort went into the form and the height is impressive.
Pretty ugly, 3/10 but with a good reclad could become a 5.
Butterfield January 24th, 2007, 05:14 PM I love it! Although it's not ugly enough for my liking, it blends in okay, typical city centre stuff. 7/10
paulmat January 24th, 2007, 08:18 PM ^^A bit off topic, but Butterfield, your avatar was dancing in time to my music. Made me chuckle a bit.

Don't worry Nottingham, every great city has at least one eyesore of a building - take a look at the 131 metre Unicenter in Cologne!
Furrydice January 25th, 2007, 12:51 PM 3/10
Disgusting, especially the podium. Nevertheless, agree with the general consensus of other Nottingham forumers and those who have visited the city - its scale and prescence are impressive (see below) and it does inspire a morbid fascination. Also agree that cosmetic improvements could greatly improve things.

Chogmook January 25th, 2007, 02:22 PM The building thinks it's an entire skyline! Yuk
ikra February 19th, 2007, 11:49 PM I do hope they blast the whole thing to bits :D and replace with a better looking one.. but dont get me wrong, nottingham is a lurvely city... theres just a lot of construction going on at the moment which is a good sign... the only thing is that when you walk down the city centre youre a bit worried summins gonna fall on top of your head.
Xtremegamer February 21st, 2007, 12:23 PM Absolutely horrible. Insignia, do you honestly think it's a 10/10?
bantam March 4th, 2007, 12:41 PM I've decided I bloody love Victoria Centre Flats A, if only for it's nighttime look. Obviously a re-clad would help a lot, but I also think it would benefit greatly if Victoria Centre Flats B were demolished. They have just as horrible cladding, but are shorter and wider, and just make the whole complex look like a mess. I also think the actual shopping centre could still be redeemed with a quality re-clad. That concrete is truly disgusting.
Stefan88 March 4th, 2007, 03:32 PM I think it would be quite difficult to demolish just block B. The victoria shopping centre would probably have to be closed for months whilst it's done.
I think it would benefit Nottingham if the whole thing was demolished. Fill in the gap properly where the train station once stood. Get rid of that awful carpark and the shabby back entrance. We could have a reeli nice tall builing and amazing looking shopping centre.
This won't become a reality but oh well.
ranny fash March 4th, 2007, 07:10 PM ^a new station would be better, there are other sites in notts for tall buildings. as if that will happen.
Stefan88 March 4th, 2007, 11:06 PM Yeh a shiny new train station would be nice. The infastructure is there to accomodate one. Shame there now blocking the underground tunnel with the Arts Exibition Centre near Broadmarsh.
Faster and more direct lines to places like Leeds etc. Taking the train to Leeds from Nottingham is an absolute joke having to change and wait for 40 mins at Sheffield.
Ive started getting the coach as it's quicker and you don't have to change.
Anyway back on the subject if there was to be a train station there it would certainly be a better place in terms of location for visitors as they would know that there in the centre of town. The current train station is cut off from the rest of town by Broadmarsh. It may even attract for investors to open up offices in the city with a quick rail route to the rest of the country and with Nottingham being where it is geographically everyone's a winner.
We can only sit here in hope.
Schmeek April 8th, 2007, 10:44 PM Ugly as sin but it has presence in the shot so must have even more in the flesh. A filthy piece of work : 4:lol:
henry hill August 12th, 2009, 06:45 PM 5/10 shock! :)
heatonparkincakes August 18th, 2009, 11:20 PM For me I cant truly score this.
First it really is hideous. Even more so because its such an emblem of a decent rail station with a necessary north-south line being replaced by a shopping centre and car park.
So British.
But on the other hand its an icon of Nottingham for me. Some happy memories of walking down from St Anns and this building being illuminated by the sunset.
And I wouldnt have minded living in the flats in there.
djfusion777 August 20th, 2009, 10:11 AM I'd go with 4/10 aswell. I don't think it's the biggest atrocity I've seen. It was bare concrete before the 90's when it was given a reclad, which softened it up. The height and bulk contributes to the skyline massively as there aren't many tall buildings in the city.
For the record, the clock tower from the station is still there but it's dwarfed by the flats.
GeorgeGriffiths December 13th, 2009, 06:24 PM A well-deserved 5/10.
