PARIS (Dow Jones)--The International Air Transport Association Tuesday slammed a planned hike in fees levied on airlines and their passengers to use Paris's main airports as "ridiculously high" and accused its state-owned operator of greed.
IATA, whose 265 member airlines carry 94% of scheduled international traffic, said it is "outraged" at the 5%-a-year increase in airport charges over the next five years announced earlier this month by French Transport Minister Dominique Perben.
"This shortsighted decision will have long-term effects on the competitive position of Paris as a major hub," said IATA's Director General Giovanni Bisignani in a statement.
Aeroports de Paris (ADP.YY), the state-owned operator of Paris' Roissy-Charles de Gaulle and Orly airports, has said the increase will permit it to finance EUR2.5 billion in investments over the period 2006 to 2010. These include the construction of two new boarding terminals at Roissy, a new automatic metro system to carry passengers between terminals and other projects.
AdP, which is slated to be partially-privatized later this year, had requested an even higher price increase of 6% annually.
A spokesman for AdP declined to comment.
