View Full Version : Rate Hong Kong's skyline (circa 1980s)
Manila-X January 25th, 2006, 12:17 PM So what you do think of Hong Kong's skyline back in the 1980s? This was the the time when The Hopewell was the tallest, The Jardines House was the most distinctive and The Hong Kong Bank building was the most symbolic!

vvill January 25th, 2006, 02:23 PM i'm surprised that hsbc was actually that tall back in the 80s.
i'm though very annoyed recently to hear that no buildings are actually allowed to be built in front of hsbc! i mean i can take that if hsbc is still a hong kong bank but considering them moving their hq to london in 1991, i think that's just hk being stupid.
_00_deathscar January 25th, 2006, 03:35 PM I don't think so - I agree with that decision.
The HSBC looks great at the waterfront.
vvill January 25th, 2006, 08:51 PM no what i meant is like.. no one should be given such priviledge especially considering that it's just the hq of a multi-national bank!
why not bank of china? i won't say boc is architecturally inferior to hsbc...
vincent January 25th, 2006, 09:24 PM i heard the hsbc gave money to gov to keep the view clear
spicytimothy January 26th, 2006, 01:33 AM they bought or rented that piece of land in front of them... nothing can b done about it now...
i'm actually more annoyed with Mandarin Oriental.. I know the inside is great but since they're closing it for renovation i thought they oughta just rebuild the whole thing... it's way too short and obsolete on the outside :-(
but then Leslie fans might get angry :-D
Manila-X January 26th, 2006, 04:16 AM Put it this way, HSBC has an excellent location in inner Central. Behind it is a hillslope so you can't build scrapers there. Infront of HSBC is Statue Square which leads to the Star Ferry Terminal. It's HK's main city square so you can't build buildings there. And how would Legco look if there was a building beside it!

A lot of its to do with feng shui too... after the reclamation work around Central is done there will be a small bay, then Statue Square in front of the HSBC Building. The Harbour itself and water flowing into the bay brings energy (wealth), and with an uninterupted view this energy flows directly into the HSBC Building. A lot of people that hold accounts there do so because of the good energy the building commands.
Think of it as the mums and dads of HK having their money in the right place to build wealth, and if anything got in their way there would be mass protests!

True about HSBC's feng shui. And it gives the building and the bank itself positive energy!
Honestly when I look at the HK currency, HSBC is always the first in mind when it comes to bank notes compared to Standard Chartered or Bank Of China!
raymond_tung88 January 26th, 2006, 02:44 PM Hong Kong would be perfect if they had the current skyline and the harbour was as big as it was in the 80's.

Oh, men! There's something wrong on the descriptions!
1st, it is Kowloon PENINSULA!!! Not Kowloon Island! :bash:
2nd, the tallest building from 1970s to 1988 was the Jardine House! Not the Hopewell! :bash: :bash:
Rachmaninov January 26th, 2006, 07:47 PM I suspect with that photo IFC II won't even fit in. The spires of BOC might touch the top of the photo. :P

I got this image from Mid Tokyo Maps and they mistakenly labeled it Kowloon Island.
The Hopewell Centre was taller than the Jardine House by the time of completion. The Hopewell was 709ft / 216m while The Jardine House was 586ft / 179m
Rachmaninov January 27th, 2006, 01:12 PM ^^ I think he meant that by the time the photo was taken, Hopewell was not completed yet.

Oh. Well the Hopewell is not on the pic but I'm sure that the building has been completed when the photo was taken.
Rachmaninov January 31st, 2006, 12:27 PM ^^ True... I suspect this was taken in 1983-84. Hopewell was completed in 1980.
