View Full Version : City Squares and Pedestrianised Areas
hella good January 25th, 2006, 10:39 PM The whole city is vastly becoming a public space. much of the new projects like the NRQ create huge public spaces and padestrianise parts of the city. here is a diagram of all the areas which are currently completed or planned in the city.

unners May 21st, 2007, 01:29 PM 1.2M TO TRANSFORM DEVONSHIRE GREEN
Sheffield City Council has announced plans to upgrade one of the City Centre’s much loved spaces, Devonshire Green. The £1.2m project will transform the space into a city centre park for local residents with an arena space for events.
Plans include the removal of part of the grass bank and the creation of a paved, tree-lined boulevard. This could be used to host market stalls or as a large assembly point for parades. Drought resistant planting and grass will help increase sustainability and a terraced area will be created next to the Forum.
The scheme will transform the remaining green space into an amphitheatre with terraced grass verges tiered for spectators and bordered by undulating sculptural walls that also enclose the planting beds. It is hoped Devonshire Green will become a space to be used by community groups and host music festivals and events.
Sir Robert Kerslake, Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council said: ” I am very excited about this project. Unlike most other cities Sheffield is very fortunate to have a green space in its city centre that can be used to stage events. The area has a lot of visitors and further enhancement of the green can only prove to improve the experience of users and visitors. We are working closely with our contractor Wrekin to ensure that the Skate Park remains open throughout the works so as to minimize disruption. I look forward to experiencing the final result next summer. “
The lighting on the green will also be enhanced providing increased security for visitors and users.
Wrekin have been appointed as contractor to the works, set to start on site 4th June with completion by Spring 2008.
David Stevens, Regional Director at Wrekin said: “We are extremely pleased to be working closely with Sheffield City Council on this scheme. Recent projects such as the Barkers Pool scheme we worked on have seen the city’s public spaces transformed for the benefit of users and visitors.”
Wrekin and the Council are working closely to ensure that access to the skate park is maintained throughout the contract and parts of Devonshire Green will be kept open for the public where possible. Highway footpaths will remain open throughout for access.
The works form part of the Devonshire Green Action Plan, which was born out of wide consultation with local businesses, community groups and residents in 2000.
Devonshire Quarter has already been chosen by CABE (Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment) as one of 6 places internationally that show good examples of city living and creating successful neighborhoods, the plans seek only to further enhance this.
The funding for this project has come from Section 106 monies.
lewisskinner May 22nd, 2007, 02:17 PM Dev Green sounds great - maybe a BBC screen?
Tudor Square looks awful though! It was lovely sitting there in the summer watching the snooker... Why get rid of that?
AndrewC May 22nd, 2007, 05:10 PM Yeah, i think the green on Tudor Square works fairly well - and its popular.
lewisskinner May 22nd, 2007, 06:15 PM Yea, I'd like to see a screen here for sporting events
hella good May 22nd, 2007, 06:49 PM it would be very handy.
paulmat May 22nd, 2007, 06:57 PM I agree about tudor square. Keep it as it is. I think the council wants to change it so it's easier to use for events.
lewisskinner May 23rd, 2007, 12:27 AM We need a mix of uses for Squares in the city though. I agree that we need space for events, but haven't we on this very page talked about the Devonshire Square redevelopments? Surely this, Peace Gardens and Barkers Pool can host events? Leave Tudor Square for me to sit outside in April/May with a lovely pint. Bastards

unners April 4th, 2008, 11:03 AM Noticed this week that the trees in the Peace Gardens are having new lighting installed on them.
AdamBlade April 4th, 2008, 11:24 AM Good idea for a thread Kyle.
One thing; Pedestrianisation :)

paulmat April 4th, 2008, 01:40 PM yeah i know im sorry, i used to have trouble with some spelling :bash:
Thank god for spell-checkers eh? ;)
AdamBlade April 4th, 2008, 02:32 PM :lol:Oh you bitch
paulmat April 4th, 2008, 02:55 PM No, I seriously mean it :dunno: I'm shocking with spelling without it (like at the mo)
Sheffy April 4th, 2008, 03:03 PM use firefox it has a built in spell checker.
paulmat April 4th, 2008, 03:09 PM I use Safari which does too, but at work its all IE, so no add-ons or spell checker or whatever :|
lewisskinner April 4th, 2008, 03:42 PM But back to public spaces. Kyle's diagram don't show the Square, Victoria Quays, Park Square, the riverside walks or the proposed Nursery Street Park.
I propose a map with the roads/squares coloured differently for pedestrianisation, public square, and thoroughfares (Gold/Steel/Blue Routes)
Bulldozer April 4th, 2008, 04:02 PM Was there not one indicating the routes in the City Center Masterplan ?
soupçon April 5th, 2008, 10:45 AM But back to public spaces. Kyle's diagram don't show the Square, Victoria Quays, Park Square, the riverside walks or the proposed Nursery Street Park.
Thank god for grammar checkers eh?
lewisskinner April 6th, 2008, 04:15 PM Was there not one indicating the routes in the City Center Masterplan ?
Yes, but that didn't show a plan to the extent of Kyle diagram
unners May 21st, 2008, 09:54 PM I see the fountains in Barkers Pool are fenced off yet again, as is the Cutting edge at Sheaf Sq. Soon to be followed by Millenium Sq Fountains (due to corrosion) and Howard St fountain ( Missing tiles) no doubt.
Truefitt May 21st, 2008, 10:26 PM You really think when they design these features they would use materials that last, like half the tiles have came off the howard st one, surely it isnt hard to get tiles that stick and stay for years?
unners May 21st, 2008, 10:28 PM You really think when they design these features they would use materials that last, like half the tiles have came off the howard st one, surely it isnt hard to get tiles that stick and stay for years?
Indeed, Just look down the road at the roxy cant get rid of them
lewisskinner May 21st, 2008, 10:33 PM You really think when they design these features they would use materials that last, like half the tiles have came off the howard st one, surely it isnt hard to get tiles that stick and stay for years?
I think it's mostly students/drunkards that pull them off tbh.
Truefitt May 21st, 2008, 10:43 PM But surely they can be stuck on better or something and made so they cant be pulled off so easily? Tiles are hardly a new design, they have been used for years, and in other places they dont seem to be pulled off?
SheffCity May 22nd, 2008, 08:44 AM There is a sign on the fencing around the ones in Barkers Pool saying they are being re-sealed.
Now if they can make the lights work and stop them spraying the pavement while they're at it then all will be well :)
lewisskinner May 22nd, 2008, 10:49 AM At least they're maintaining these assets to the city - how recently has this started?
hella good May 23rd, 2008, 08:15 PM http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j217/hellagood88/Album%205/DSCF4431.png
lewisskinner May 24th, 2008, 01:34 AM Well, it's not that inconvenient for me that they're down, but hey...
AndrewC May 24th, 2008, 03:00 PM ^^ I can see a tramp walking up to them at 11:30pm last night, towel in one hand shampoo in the other, seeing the sign, tutting loudly and shaking his head in annoyance.
eighty4 May 24th, 2008, 03:09 PM ^^ you painted a great picture there lol
Tubeman May 24th, 2008, 03:36 PM Title sorted :)
muddycoffee May 24th, 2008, 03:41 PM Thanks Tubeman,
it was a bit embarrasing that..
Wendigo Wendigo May 24th, 2008, 03:42 PM Thank you Tubey :). It's been driving some of us up the wall for months.
Now if we could only get all the other wrong titles sorted out....
AndrewC May 24th, 2008, 03:44 PM I PMed at least 5 minutes ago. Frankly I find that kind of response time unacceptable. :ohno: This country... ;)
I did try looking for some other titles that needed changing but couldn't see anything? :dunno:
Wendigo Wendigo May 24th, 2008, 03:47 PM That's odd. I can see at least three: the Citygate one, the Arts Tower one and the H&L one.
Edit: Actually there might be four. Isn't the 2 St Paul's title wrong as well? Should it be eight floors, not seven?
AndrewC May 24th, 2008, 03:56 PM ^^ Not sure what wendi, I'll admit I just look for the grammar/spelling mostly, unless its an obvious factual error. Can you post a list of suggested alterations on the Sheffield Skybar thread? Ta

Yes like the last one very Urban, back street, reminds me of a street in Leeds just off the center with the Sub station And telephone exchange on it, thats very back alley London / NY style.
Make you wonder why they put the benches down there as looks so uninviting.
arepeejee May 26th, 2008, 06:09 PM A lot of the people who work in the offices congregate here for lunch.

soupçon May 29th, 2008, 01:16 AM I was thinking - 'because it's the school holidays'. That's why there are idiots there today.

AndrewC May 29th, 2008, 08:52 PM Bloody youth of today, using public spaces. ;)
jozblade May 29th, 2008, 09:16 PM I dont see how stood on the plants is using a public place.

Goldie July 28th, 2008, 08:49 PM Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo! I've only just got used to it as it is! I can still vividly remember looking at the exhibition showing what could replace the carpark that used to be there in the Graves before they built it. Even if it's just to stop me from feeling old, the Council should let this one be...
hella good July 28th, 2008, 08:54 PM only just got used to it? theres nothing much to get used to.
AdamBlade July 29th, 2008, 12:17 AM Good God it's been like that shit grassy area for years
hella good July 29th, 2008, 12:19 AM yeah, as far back as i can remember.
Wysseri July 29th, 2008, 12:50 AM I'm a bit worried there isn't enough seating space there, especially considering it's almost always packed at lunch time in that area - people sat around the edge of the grass, on the grass and on the seats too...
Otherwise, i guess fair enough. Why can't they just revamp the concrete around the grass and seats in the area and leave it be. It's actually nice to have grass in the city centre (obviously there's the peace gardens too but tudor square isn't usually full of kids like the peace gardens are)
lewisskinner July 29th, 2008, 02:31 AM Yes, leave the grass in! The plans just look like they've tried to revamp a former road and call it a public space, when it was a public space anyway!
This has too little seating, too little space, and how are people going to walk around the Cue-zone when the world snookers comes - the most popular place in the city for 2 weeks will become the narrowest pedestrian thoroughfare!
lewisskinner July 29th, 2008, 11:14 AM What has DDA got to do with grass?
Also, is it me of have they planted trees right up against Starbucks entrance in that pic?
No bad thing in my opinion if they're going to hide Starfucks!
What is the DDA?
SheffCity July 29th, 2008, 11:21 AM DDA = Disability Discrimination Act
TakeMeHigher July 29th, 2008, 11:22 AM yeah, as far back as i can remember.
It's only been there 15 years, 20 at most. Prior to that it was highway around four sides with a public car park in the middle and the entrance ramp down to the councils private U/G car park.
Do we have to reinvent our public places at such short intervals? Is there anything especially wrong with it at the moment? Just because cash is on offer should we be paving over one of the increasingly rare chunks of grass in our hard landscaped city centre?
SheffCity July 29th, 2008, 11:26 AM How did my post end up above TakeMeHigher's when I posted it AFTER reading his?!!
unners July 29th, 2008, 11:30 AM I see nothing wrong with the square, its a nice simple design that was completed in 1991, has nice paving, the lighting columns may be need updating but thats about it imo.
SheffCity July 29th, 2008, 11:34 AM It is a very dated looking square IMO but not terrible. New paving and lowering the grassed area to the same level as the paving would be fine.
soupçon July 29th, 2008, 06:49 PM Seems fine, but I'd like to see more green - preferably grass as well as plants. It's nice to be able to sprawl once in a while - you can't do it the same on paving. You just look like the guy off that Radiohead video.
AdamBlade July 29th, 2008, 07:24 PM For God sake, this square is horrible, and is the attention of a great number of people around the world every year and looks like someones back garden. This is a showcase for our city and revamping it after 20 years is not too early at all.
I can't believe people will complain when things aren't changed and when they are.
TakeMeHigher July 29th, 2008, 07:37 PM When ever it is "the attention of a great number of people around the world every year" it is covered in a huge hospitality marquee that Joe Public isn't allowed into.
Mind you shifting the grass in favour of a flush hard surface will enable a marquee three times the size. Won't that look fabulous on TV with a massive tent next to the BBC lorries.
lewisskinner July 29th, 2008, 08:11 PM Yes. Sorry Adam, but those pretty lights on the ground won't be seen for the massive Cue Zone thing - which may not even fit due to the raised beds/planters encroaching onto the square!
And I do not think it's hypocritical to complain about horrible new buildings/attractions being built whilst simultaneously complaining about perfectly good buildings/attractions being ripped up for no real reason. Change for change's sake is not reason enough I'm afraid Adam.
As an aside, if someone is giving away free money, can't the council use it for sorting out division street after they saw fir to rip it up for NRQ enabling works just 2 years after laying it? Or the new Charter Square?
AdamBlade July 30th, 2008, 12:20 AM I think the idea of the whole revamp of the Crucible and the square will mean that that stupid tent thing won't have to be used.
TakeMeHigher July 30th, 2008, 09:05 AM How does that work?
AdamBlade July 30th, 2008, 09:44 AM Well I've no idea, I was just hoping there would be space within the crucible for that kind of thing.
Wysseri July 30th, 2008, 08:13 PM For God sake, this square is horrible, and is the attention of a great number of people around the world every year and looks like someones back garden. This is a showcase for our city and revamping it after 20 years is not too early at all.
I can't believe people will complain when things aren't changed and when they are.
Chill dude, I was merely saying to keep the grass because it's important :D
Yes revamp it, new seating/lighting and such in keep with the rest of the city centre. But for the love of God keep the grass. There isn't enough of it (although far more than some other cities) and getting rid of the grass really will be a shame. Tudor square is usually my escape from the peace gardens when it's rammed full of school children and I love having the trees and the grass.
Look at how popular the peace gardens are, that's likely because of the fountains, seating and yup... grass.
Can anyone tell I want the grass?
