Some lovely stuff their roly, what camera do you use if you don't mind my asking?

An Olympus C725UZ, it's ok but the focus is a bit dodgy on it IMO and there's a bit too much purple fringing for my liking but that could be something I'm doing wrong???. Didn't I see you on another thread enquiring about a Canon350D or something like it? I'd go for that if I was you it pisses all over mine, different league. Wish I had a better cam to be honest but can't afford it right now, the pics would be so much better though.

If you ever want to know what camera someone is using and they are not as nice as Roly to tell you, just check the EXIF data in the picture file.

That's if they haven't modified it. ;)

It also can be a great help if you see a fantastic photo, as the EXIF data normally stores what settings were on the camera at the time the picture was taken, type of flash, etc.

Ah - yes i have heard of these tram things - i believe the working people use them. I think i may have spotted one from my carriage when Lady Longford and I dine in town.
I must use one one day and see the marvellous view that young Mr Bling has captured with his magical picture making machine.

Thanks for 'shout out' DJ - i dont ride horses or motorbikes, hate golf (sorry b18mmy!), dont drink, despise littering and haven't pooed on the floor for nearly 34 years now so they should let me in i think.
I am, if course, named after the cinema and not the park but the cinema was named after the park which was named after the hall which was named after the man (the original Longford if you like) if you get my drift.
Nice park as it is with a 'petting zoo' for the kiddywinks (and i dont mean that in the Gary Glitter sense).

Nah they don't look like solar panels to me, lol.. no matter how close up..

Well, Was gonna say the base of beetham, but you wouldn't get that close to it with it still being fenced off.. so it can't be somet thats still under construction, but I'm completely lost on what or where to guess at..If fact looking a the join I wouldn't even say (or maybe I'm just tryin to be clever and missing the point completely) that this is a vertical plane.. and that infact its a picture of a horizontal surface?? Flooring perhaps? Or am I not even close? lol... But then again it looks to clean a surface for something that is being walked over all day, Unless its at Salford Quays where it might not have so much traffic going over it?

So my guess is its ....some public space at the Quays? Or even Picadilly Gardens, if there is an area with that surface there, lol... Lol... I know am way off the point but its a guess..

I know its a cliche but the scrapping of Concorde is probably the first time since The Reformation that 'civilisation' has took a step backwards. What with all that is happening in the world it may just be a silly old plane but its the thin edge of the wedge IMO.
I remember a sunny day up at Turf Moor watching a dreary mid table slog and Concorde flew over and i'm sure even the players took a sneaky look up.
That planet never ceased to thrill .

What do we need to do to the white balance Longford? I'm really interested. How does this help with night shots?

:) My implication was that rolyshutter had the correct white balance setting for that excellent photograph and that his journey to becoming a true jedi warrior must have been helped by a wise and powerful teacher!

In short, depending on the nature of the majority of light in the picture it is best to set your camera to the correct setting so a more 'natural' effect is achieved (if a natural effect is what you want!).

If the majority of the light is from normal light bulbs and the old fashioned orange street lights you need to set your camera to Tungsten which is usually a lightbulb in the WB menu. If there is lots Fluro or the newer sodium type street lights set it to Fluro which is a funny looking horizontal stick with beams coming out of each end. If its a mixture try it on the flash setting in WB.
Probably best to experiment because you rarely get one single type of light source outdoors nowadays and it all depends on the effect you want to create. Tungsten balanced looks more natural but some people think it too cold.
To demonstrate - two pictures at the same exposure:

Thanks guys - I'll have to do a bit of experimenting with the WB function. To be honest I only use the camera in the dark when I'm covering evening football matches. I suppose floodlights will be halogen? I'll see if I've a setting for that.

It's a Sigma 17-35 f2.8-4 EX but it's the old non DG model. It's absolutely crap at focusing. I only ever use it on manual. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone - although it was cheap - £139. Is your D60 a 1.6 crop?

The Longford
July 30th, 2006, 12:42 AM
It was the focal length i was interested in to be honest (still getting my head around the difference between film and digital lenses because yes my D60 does have a crop) and thats the range i was looking at (but perhaps not in the Sigma though according to you!)

Yep thats exactly what I was thinking of for your panoramic stuff and that pesky watermark the software you use now leaves. I use 7.0 too. You could stitch some shots together pretty well in 7.0 if your good with your tools and blending modes though, have you tried it?

I went to Manchester about 5 years ago, when I lived in England. I was impressed with it then and now it looks even more impressive with the new buildings and renovations. Manchester is a world class city in my opinion....it has everything - great shopping, beautiful architecture, great sporting facilities, probably the best transport infrastructure in the UK, tons of things to do, great restaurants and it's one of the most 'friendly' big cities in the world.

I enjoy reading the Manchester section of the forum as I'm always keen to see new photographs of the place.

Next time I come to the UK, I am flying into Manchester.

Albert Square during a rare moment of 'sunshine'

Choice of background music: The Sound, The Cure, Throwing Muses. It's interesting to see what effect music can have on the choice of photo subjects.

Shame all that bare concrete is so dirty and uncared for. If it was clean at least, or better still something spanking shiny gleaming, them pictures would be so much better. Hey, Portland looks neat. That side of it has something of CJC about it.

Thanks Roly, the curves make it look like a sleek yacht cutting through the ocean. In hindsight I should have waited for the chunk to move his fat ass off the bridge before I pulled the trigger?
