Rialto Towers
Melbourne, Australia

HEIGHT: 251m/823 feet
FLOORS: 63 floors
COMPLETION: 1986
ARCHITECT: ?

Built in the Eighties period in the Modern style

Notable architectural features :
Tallest building in the southern hemisphere and the tallest building in Australia, the Rialto Tower stands as a landmark in Melbourne, soaring above the Yarra River.

The reflective glass skin which wraps around the tower, means that it changes colour throughout the course of the day, mirroring the sky.

that's spire - "generally" speaking no-one really cares if a spire is taller here, so mainly we just use roof heights :)

Although it seems that the spire counts into the height, it shouldn't really, since it is more of an antenna rather than just a spire.

we've told you this before - it's NOT an antenna - nor is 101 Collin's Spire, the dishes on 120 are more ornamental than anything, they dont service as communications medium - ONLY Bourke Place, MElbourne Central and Telstra HQ have "antennae"

One of my favs in Oz. Love how it stands out so much. Anywhere in the city, you can find the Rialto Towers. Glass is also magnificent. Too bad it will lose it's well deserved title of the Southern Hemispheres tallest building to Eureka tower, also in Melbourne, by 2005:(

Thanx guys,
Matt:)

I've agonised over my beloved Rialto much in recent days - is it really a work of art as a building or not?

I agree when you look at it in some pics it can appear as just another glass box - but a perfectly proportioned one at that - so just standing it by itself in a desert it would rate perhaps 7.5/10

But.. what people who see it in pics dont realise is the effect it has on the city. The placement of the building towering over the river and the city, the way it changes colours like Uluru during the day.. the overall aspect of it..

http://users.bigpond.net.au/speckled10/rialto-yarra.jpg

It simply has to be one of the most perfect design examples of placement, height, aspect, proportion, choice of facade.. you name it. Its just the whole box and dice when it comes to simple tower design..

*THAT'S* why it gets elevated to legendary status by so many Aussie scraper fans and locals in general.. and why it gets elevated to a near perfect 10/10 in my books!

You can't miss the Rialto in Melbourne, it always stand out, even when it loses the tile of Melb tallest as there's only really one other 200m+ tower in that part of skyline. I think it will always be the tower sticking out in the western part of skyline

And it's lit up blue at night, to make it stand out even more.

I really think to appreciate it, you have to be close up to it so you can see the beautiful facade on the building. However it also looks great from any distance, it looks mighty fine when i stand up on my roof 10kilometers away! It and 101 collins street are my favourite buildings. Have any of you guys realised how insane 101 looks at night with all those spotlights shining onto it?

October 19th, 2002, 09:09 AM
Well, sorry, folks ... the Aussies seem to go totally wild over this thing! At least they went to some trouble over the roof, but on the whole I find this boring box city, never mind the riveting effects of the reflecting glass. For some reason I've seen that before... :D

Well, maybe they're boxes, but they play off each other nicely, the chamfered (did I spell that correctly?) corners add interest, they tried to go beyond the flat roof, and I'm a bit of sucker for those sheer glass curtain walls that echo the clouds and sky...8/10.

To truly appreciate this building, you need to visit Melbourne in winter (not a pleasant experience!), wait for a fine day, then visit the western suburbs in the hour before or the hour just after sunset. I've seen this giant mirror of a building reflecting the setting sun from the Pentland Hills fifty kilometres to the west; and after sunset it still glows long after the sky is almost black.

It might be just another glass box, but though its orientation was determined by Hoddle's Grid (give or take 45 degrees) , it's sort of like Stonehenge to me.

And yes believe what you hear about the reflections...simply stunning.
My fav' reflection is that of a late afternoon thunderstorm, it turns an irridecent greenish blue.

Still startles me - 5 km away- when it reflects the setting sun so brilliantly through the blinds into the back bedroom. Went up the top again recently. Still the highest vantage point above ground in the Southern Hemisphere (apart, I guess, from CentrePoint Tower in Sydney). Excellent views.

It was one of the tallest reinforced concrete towers in the world when built (if not the tallest, I can't remember), and had some of the fastest lifts in the world at the time. When it was built, it was way ahead of its time.

Never really been a favourite of mine, but I agree with what people have said - it looks better in real life than it does in photos, is an important part of the Melbourne skyline, and it has a simple elegance to it that is much enhanced by its siting at an angle to the city grid, slim & tall south tower, the intriguing reflective glass facade and the little setbacks in its facade that "catch" the morning and evening sun in "reflective strips" along the length of the tower. Also, it has an awesome (and under-rated) observation deck!!!

I reckon Rialto is a nice "glass" building. glass towers tend to become boring. just a large expanse of glass. no details. There are better office towers in Australia . Also if you want to include resi towers. cant go past World Tower.i think a skyscraper needs to be busy. lots and lots of ins and outs, a little glass, concrete, steel ect ect.

I grew up on the Gold Coast i don't think balconies are bad hehehe.
Oh and thanx for the spelling correction :)

Blend i don't know if i like Vision, its kinda thin and odd looking to me, Q1 is much better....

:O

thats a weird statement. Everyone else has dubbed it to be the best scraper in Australia if it looks like renders. (extremly suprisingly even Melbourners)

It is far superior to Q1, which when i first saw its design was elegant... but then this scraper extended the elegance thing.

I dont like people saying its a copy of Q1, since just because the shape is similar flat style back, bladed front).. if thats so, then every box is a copy of eachother. not true.

anyway.. Rialto is simple but awesome.

Hey Sucker1-take all of Mystad and Skiesthelimits' d#!@$
out of your mouth. It's not a good look. Second of all, I've probably
ran through more flames and walked through more rain at my young
age than you will in your WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE, so spare me your
weak 'ways of the world' condescending drivel. Everyone's entitled to their
own opinion??? NNNAAAAWWWWW! You sure about that, bro?
If you wanna call yourself checking someone, you need to take
take a couple of steps back and read what was`said by the other two posters before you decide to jump on my case.It works both ways.
Don't get all butthurt just because my bark may sound louder than the
next man's.It only makes you look that much more stupid.
P.S.- the world is going to think what it will of the U.S. regardless,

It's a shame that they have to crowd the top with all those dishes and antennaes. Is it really necessary to have so many? I must say it makes the top look like a Gypsy's jumble sale, when really the building is quite simply and cleanly designed.

I had to give them a "10"

Without a doubt this is my favourite skyscraper in the world. I may be biased because I grew up with it and it is a symbol of Melbourne. Everytime I fly back home the first familiar sight I look for is the Rialto. Eureka may be taller and newer, but it doesn't symbolise Melbourne like Rialto.

Aside from being a representation of my hometown, I just love this building for what it is. Place it in Toronto, Moscow, heck, Dubai, and I would still love it. It's one of those buildings that is timeless and honest. Is it exciting? Not exactly. Is it ugly? In my opinion, no way! But the daring designs seem to age more rapidly and fads come and go. The Rialto is simplistic and it's so well-balanced.

I adore the tops of the towers with the stepped levels. It adds character and from some angles head-on, it gives the building a kind of "snarl". Also the "cut corners" break up the usual square edges. And of course, the glass just melts my heart. The deep blues reflect the surrounding builings in the morning and then the rays of the sun turned the building into a brilliant gold in the evening. Finally, the blue neon lighting at night on the tops is breath-taking.

This is really one building that the photos don't do justice for. I can understand that many see it as a glass box, but see it in person and your opinion may change.

Did I mention I love this building? Lol
