In Hong Kong, good fortune and a bit of stick

HONG KONG, Jan 30, 2006 (AFP) - Hong Kongers can look forward to a prosperous Lunar New Year if predictions made Monday in the city's annual fortune-telling ceremony prove true.

Every year a city official selects one from 100 numbered bamboo sticks at the Chinese territory's 300-year-old Che Kong Temple. Each number carries a different prediction for the coming 12 months.

This year legislator Lau Wong-fat drew a stick bearing the number 75, considered auspicious in Chinese mythology.

The ceremony, which takes place among swirls of incense smoke and draws hundreds of believers to the temple, is broadcast live on television because of intense interest in the yearly number.

Although rooted in ancient practice the event, which takes place on the second day of each Lunar New Year, was only adopted as the city's official fortune-telling ceremony in 1981.

Many believe it affects the territory's coming fortunes.

In 2003, home affairs minister Patrick Ho picked number 83 -- the most unlucky number according to Chinese custom.

There followed 12 months of crisis in which the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) virus killed 299 people and ruined the economy, and unprecedented political protests left the government in turmoil.

Such was the concern the following year that organsiers broke with the tradition of inviting a government official to draw the stick. Lau has done the honours since.

Last year he pulled a so-so 76 and presaged a year of huge economic growth -- GDP is expected to reach 7 percent -- but one that also saw political upheaval including the resignation of the China-appointed chief executive.

I don't want to go to the peak, to far away and cold.

WKCD is a bit far from the action, and the fireworks rise quite far away, so it'll be hard to take pictures.

There is a fenced-off area next to the bathroom behind the harbour tunnel ventilation shaft that has a hole in it and I could go straight towards the harbour for the Dec 31 countdown. That's a good viewing spot with not so many people.

I'm also looking for a place to spot the fireworks. A suggestion came for Lugard Road. Bowen Road might be OK but the buildings in Wan Chai might block the action a little.

Very Good, I'm so impressed by the TVB Lunar New Year ident this year, it's a good combination of the concept of Chinese Lunar New year and St. Valentine's Day. It's definitely one of the best Lunar New Year ident I ever seen.

By the way, it seems that there is no TVB promotion video for Chinese Lunar New Year this year.

Hong Kong investors hope feng shui brings good fortune in year of the rabbit
19 January 2011

HONG KONG (AP) - The year of the rabbit in the Chinese lunar calendar begins next month, and for investors in Hong Kong, that means the stock market will go up in short bunny hops, according to the much anticipated astrological predictions of a well-known stock brokerage.

CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets released its annual "feng shui" index Wednesday based on the signs of the Chinese zodiac, with lighthearted predictions for the local stock market, commodities, property and celebrities. Yet the tongue-in-cheek tips belie the fact that many investors in this southern Chinese financial center follow the feng shui belief system religiously, believing it will seriously boost their wealth.

"The rabbit is a very cautious animal. Every time it hops a bit, it turns around and checks out the environment -- is it safe? -- before moving on," said analyst Philip Chow, designated the brokerage's feng shui master for its 17th annual report.

That's how he predicts Hong Kong's benchmark Hang Seng Index will also perform in the year of the rabbit, which begins on Feb. 3.

"The market will go up but every now and then it will slow down take a breath, take a look at the surroundings, evaluating what is going on and continue to go up. It will be a zigzag market," predicted Chow, who most of the time is an analyst researching transport companies.

Feng shui is the traditional Chinese practice of predicting fortunes through dates and classical Chinese texts as well as using timing and the placement of objects to improve luck. The term feng shui literally means wind and water, and the practice dates back thousands of years.

Metal and water are the elements associated with the rabbit this year, so that means industries such as metals, airlines, financial, marine and gaming would have good returns for investors. However, sectors related to the earth element, such as construction and property, would not do so well.

Other feng shui advisers weighed in with their predictions for business leaders in the year of the rabbit, which is year 4708 in the Chinese calendar.

Raymond Lo, a well-known local feng shui consultant who has written many books on the subject, said it would not be a good year for Apple chief executive Steve Jobs, who the company announced this week is taking a second medical leave for unspecified problems.

Jobs' element is fire, and his recovery after his liver transplant was helped last year because it was the year of the tiger. "Unfortunately, when the tiger fades away, his bad health comes back," Lo said.

On the other hand, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg could be in for even greater fortune this year.

According to Lo, Zuckerberg was born under a "double academic star" sign, which gives him lots of intellectual luck while 2011 will bring him "commercial luck."

The use of feng shui principles can be seen throughout Hong Kong's central business district. A pair of guardian lion statues sit at the entrance to HSBC's Norman Foster-designed headquarters, traditional symbols used to guard the wealth within. The building's vast open ground floor space also allows qi, or energy, to flow freely.

Next door, the Bank of China's modern, angular headquarters, designed by architect I.M. Pei, caused a controversy when it first opened because of the sharp angles of its upper levels, which feng shui followers likened to knife blades casting bad luck out to its neighbors, including the U.S. Consulate and Hong Kong legislature. Its sharp interior corners were also said to trap luck inside the building.

Hong Kong's Disneyland incorporated feng shui principles in its design. The angle of the front gate was shifted by 12 degrees on the advice of a feng shui master, who said it would ensure prosperity for the park. Disney also put a bend in the walkway between the gate and the Disneyland train station to help qi enter the park instead of flowing out to sea.

All that effort has failed to produce the desired results so far. Hong Kong Disneyland, which opened in 2005, on Tuesday said in it made another loss in 2010.

Auspicious dates, meanwhile, are chosen for company meetings and announcements. The principles of feng shui can also be seen in something as seemingly insignificant as company stock codes, many of which incorporate the number eight, which in Chinese rhymes with the word for prosperity.

Newspaper revelations about the use of feng shui even caused a minor scandal last year. But not because the government was compensating Hong Kong residents millions of dollars due to public works disrupting feng shui. Instead, the furor was over officials being fooled into paying more than they should have and not keeping records.

Companies consult advisers such as Lo for help on practices to help bring them greater wealth. Demand for Lo's services is growing outside of Hong Kong, and he travels regularly to Singapore, Japan, Russia and Germany to teach classes.

He says one of his clients is an Australian mining company.

"They always ask which mine will have the best profit, where they should dig longer, where they should withdraw," he said.

The authors of the CLSA report said feng shui shouldn't be taken too seriously when sizing up stocks even while acknowledging that the report is wildly popular with the firm's clients.

"Whether they act on it, I'm not really sure," said Francis Cheung, the firm's head of China and Hong Kong investment strategy. "I really certainly hope not."

Public urged to go green with red packets
The Standard
Monday, January 24, 2011

An environmental group has called on the public to reuse Lunar New Year lai see packets to save more than 9,000 trees every year.

"We have calculated that Hong Kong people use 180 million red packets every year," said Kwok Ying- ying, project officer of Greeners Action.

"It means we have cut down 9,253 trees. Citizens generally dump the used red packets and that is not environmentally friendly."

The group distributed more than 10,000 used red packets to pedestrians in Mong Kok yesterday. Kwok said the group collected 120,000 used red packets last year.

"The response was not bad because we had expected the number would be 30,000. It demonstrates that people are more aware of our environment," she said.

"We will distribute the collected red packets to more than 40 organizations such as schools to raise people's awareness of environmental protection. In fact, a red packet can be reused for three years. And the old red packets can even be remade for decoration."

Kwok urged citizens not to readily accept red packet giveaways from businesses.

"When you apply for a credit card or go to fast-food restaurants, you will be given a pack of red packets as a gift. We should think twice before we take these free red packets," she said.

A passerby surnamed Fung said she supports the idea.

"I use more than 100 red packets every year. Almost all of them have been used before. When some new packets are not used, I will keep them for next year," she said.

"Although there is a tradition that we should use everything new in the Lunar New Year to have a new start, I do not really care about it."

Another passerby, surnamed Lee, started reusing packets two years ago. "I started reusing the old ones for the environment. Half of them have been used before," said Lee, who gives 80 red packets every year.

Six is the new eight for luck at banquets
The Standard
Friday, January 28, 2011

Eight is an auspicious number in Chinese culture, but Friends of the Earth say they have convinced at least 50 organizations and 80 government departments that six is just as good.

In an attempt to cut down on food wastage during the Lunar New Year period, the environmental group launched an "Order Less Waste Less - Food Waste Reduction Scheme" at a reception yesterday, which was attended by environment chief Edward Yau Tang-wah.

The group has urged those attending celebratory new year banquets to order just six main dishes instead of the usual eight. They claim that ordering two fewer main course dishes can cut food wastage by 15 percent.

"The response from the government and other enterprises has been encouraging," FoE (HK) group director Edwin Lau Che-feng said. "We have to do something to reduce food wastage at source and reducing our orders can effectively do this."

The FoE hopes the scheme will help nurture in consumers a mindset that is sensitive to the environment that "enough food is just as good."

"There is a necessity to tackle the problem at source and have the right attitude to plan ahead to prevent unnecessary food wastage during year-end receptions. This includes carefully counting the number of guests and, therefore, ordering the appropriate amount of food," Yau said.

He told how the Environment Bureau has installed a food waste composter in its office.

Apart from the Environment Bureau, supporters of the FoE proposal include the Hong Kong Housing Society and Association of Hong Kong Nursing Staff.

FoE has also suggested that those attending such banquets bring their own reusable boxes to take home unfinished food.

Lau said the group started the scheme last December and began spreading the idea to various organizations.

According to the FoE, Hong Kong's cavalier behavior produces 3,280 tonnes of wasted food a day.

Meanwhile, a recovering economy is making people more generous with their lai see this Lunar New Year, according to a survey by the Hong Kong Research Association.

One-fifth of the 1,556 people surveyed said they would increase the amount they give in their red packets this year.

Zhang Junsen, a professor of economics at the Chinese University, said: "It is understandable that people feel comfortable spending more."
