Like I always say, 99% of Karachi buildings are very ugly because of their paintjobs.

But the actual path for water flow is always narrow. they could make that path deeper and solid and build a normal road on rest of the area. BUT I like the bridge it will look more beautiful after markings, lines and cat eyes. Night view would be awesome.

Nazim Karachi Syed Mustafa Kamal has directed concerned officials to accelerate pace of development work on the under construction Banaras Chowk flyover so that the bridge costing Rs.550 million could be completed as soon as possible. During a 7 hour long visit to various areas of city he expressed apprehension on the establishment of encroachments in Gadap Town and said that all constructions must be in accordance with the master plan or the city would have to face more problems in future.

Nazim Karachi also inspected the arrangements for Gul-e-Dawoodi Exhibition at Bagh Ibn-e-Qasim. While taking strict notice of the establishment of encroachments in Gadap Town he issued directives for their immediate removal. City Nazim also went to Gulshan and SITE town during his visit.

During the visit of Orangi Town on late night Thursday he noted that the Banaras Chowk flyover holds importance in the city due to the fact that it connects whole of Orangi Town and some parts of Balida Town with the main city areas. After the completion of this bridge traffic jam problem at this junction would also be solved. He said that the designing of this project has been done in such a manner that traffic passing through this chowk will not have any hurdle in its way. He however said that considering its importance to the city the project must be finished at the earliest.
Nazim Karachi further said that the project of Banaras Chowk would have completed much earlier but its design had to be changed. The original design would affect 450 homes in the area; therefore we altered it and now it would affect only three shops.

He said that in order to provide more facilities to the residents of Orangi Town, City Government has planned many projects. Separate water supply lines have been laid to provide direct water to Orangi and Baldia Town while 2 pumping stations have been established with the cost of Rs.10 million to supply water to hills in Orangi Town. Nazim Karachi said that development projects costing Rs.600 million were initiated in the Qasba Colony while construction of two more roads will start soon. He said that a new route is being developed by cutting of hills in Orangi Town.

Nazim Karachi said that the city government wants to solve the problems of the citizens and it was working to provide more convenience and ease in their daily life.

Karachi Jan 02: The City District Government Karachi has completed the most important corridor of phase-II of Command and Control System on Friday evening when the entire area of Nishter Park and its adjacent streets along with M.A Jinnah Road from Numaish Chowrangi to Tower was connected to the central command and control system at Civic Center.

A total of 16 video cameras have been installed on various points of M.A Jinnah Road from Tower to Numaish Chowrangi.

This may be noted that the City Government has introduced a latest command and control system in Karachi to monitor the city condition with the help of sophisticated technology.
In the first phase of the project Corridor –I and II have already been connected to the central monitoring system.

Earlier Nazim Karachi Syed Mustafa Kamal had announced that in the second phase of the project the area of Nishter Park, M.A Jinnah Road from Numaish to Tower will also be connected to the command and control system before Muharram-ul-Haram so that the processions and gatherings held in this area during this month could be monitored.

The City government has completed this work under coordination with the Jamshed Town administration.

On Friday all activities on M.A Jinnah Road from Numaish Cowrangi to Tower were monitored at central Command and Control Room at Civic Center after which the experts declared it satisfactory.

Withdrawal of construction permission
NAPA moves court against KBCA

Saturday, January 03, 2009
By Jamal Khurshid

Karachi

The Sindh High Court (SHC) has ordered status quo on a letter of the Karachi Building Control Authority (KBCA) regarding its withdrawal of construction permission to the National Academy of Performing Arts (NAPA) at Hindu Gymkhana.

The order came on a petition filed by the NAPA’s representative Arshad Mehmood challenging the KBCA’s letter in which it has withdrawn the proposed alteration and construction permission to NAPA to construct a theater/auditorium adjacent to the Hindu Gymkhana.

The heritage site was leased to the NAPA for 30 years in September 2005. The controversy arose when the Sindh Cultural Department raised objection to the construction of a theater/auditorium, funded by the UAE, adjacent to the Hindu Gymkhana building by the NAPA. The NAPA has also challenged the Sindh cultural department’s Sep 13 notification in the SHC that asked it to vacate the Hindu Gymkhana premises accusing it of breaching the lease agreement and violating the provisions of the Sindh Cultural and Heritage Act 1994.

The petitioner’s counsel Makhdoom Ali Khan submitted that the KBCA withdrew its permission on Dec 29 at the behest of the Sindh government as it failed to get vacated the interim stay last week in the pending litigation on the disputed site. He said that the KBCA gave permission for the construction three years back and abruptly withdrew the same without issuing any show cause notice to the NAPA despite the fact that the proposed auditorium did not harm the heritage site of the Hindu Gymkhana.

The petitioner’s counsel submitted that the respondent has never asked NAPA to produce a no objection certificate (NOC) from the heritage department as there was no need (requirement) to produce an NOC from the heritage department.

He said that the respondent also allowed the petitioner to proceed with the construction for the last three years without demanding the so-called NOC but now the permission was withdrawn on account of being unable to provide the NOC from the heritage department, which was unjust and uncalled for.

He said that the KBCA’s action was the direct result of the Sindh government’s failure to vacate the interim stay order while the government has full knowledge regarding the permission vis-‡-vis the construction. He claimed that construction was being carried out as per the approved plan of the KBCA and it was in the final stage. He prayed the court to set aside the impugned letter and restrain the KBCA from demolishing the theater/auditorium.

The SHC’s division bench issued notices to the KBCA for January 9 and ordered status quo on the KBCA’s letter.

Karachi Jan 05: City District Government Karachi will complete the phase-II of the Wireless video Surveillance System in next two months under which the whole area from Tower to Airport on one side and from Tower to Sohrab Goth on the other side will be covered and monitored through latest command and control technology.

In phase-I of the project, City Government had successfully linked the two newly constructed corridors with the central command and control system at Civic Center with a cost of Rs.110 million while work on phase-II has already begun with the installation of video cameras at Nishter Park and surrounding areas and at Numaish Chowrangi M.A Jinnah Road costing Rs.30 million.

Giving a briefing about the project City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal on Monday informed the media personnel that the installation of surveillance video cameras at Nishter Park, its adjacent areas, Numaish and M.A Jinnah Road was not under any specific program or on momentary basis but it has been done by City District Government Karachi to save the lives of citizens while introducing latest command and control technology.

He said that we wanted to connect this area with Command & Control System before the start of Muharram-ul-Haram as this important vicinity holds huge gatherings of people at Muharram-ul-Haram and Eid Milad-un-Nabi(SAW) besides at other important events while some unfortunate incidents also took place here.

He said that we have installed such a latest system here which is used in most developed cities of the world and the system is being extended gradually.

Showing the holding of a Majlis at Nishter Park and the situation of traffic at M.A Jinnah Road to media representatives via video cameras at C&C Nazim Karachi further informed that now every activity in his area is being monitored and recorded and the recorded data will be saved for next 10 years.

He said that we have helped police and now they can take the advantage of world’s latest monitoring technology. The City Nazim said that these are all precautionary measures which have been done to save the lives of citizens in Karachi.

He said that on the special directives of Sindh Home Minister Zulfiqar Mirza a S.P Naeem Shaikh and DSP Qasim Ghouri were deputed at City Government’s Command and Control Center while the EDO Municipal Services Masood Alam would oversee the camps established for Muharram-ul-Haram and provide all necessary services to them.

Nazim Karachi said that the Haq Parast leadership was trying to fulfill its responsibilities and all of these projects are owned by people and only they can protect and secure them.

DCO Karachi Javed Hanif Khan, City Nazim’s representative to KWSB Imamuddin Shehzad and EDO Municipal Services Masood Alam was also present on this occasion.

KARACHI, Jan 5: The construction of government buildings has been exempted from the mandatory approval of building plans from the Karachi Building Control Authority.

According to sources, a notification SOB (GA&CD) 18 – 219/2008, issued on Dec 31, 2008 under the signature of Sindh chief secretary Fazal-ur-Rehman, says: “In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 1 Sub Section (3) of the Sindh Building Control Ordinance 1979, the government of Sindh is pleased to exclude all government buildings under the purview of the government of Sindh from operation of all the provisions of the ordinance.”
:gaah:

The sources said that this blanket exemption from getting building plans approved from the KBCA – which is mandatory for all other private builders etc – extended to government buildings was unprecedented, though earlier also in a majority of cases government departments did not obtain approval from the KBCA. Earlier, the law, however, required that the buildings plans be approved by the KBCA.

The sources said that the recently announced decision would have a multi-dimensional effect. On the one hand, it would open the floodgates to gross violations of the building bylaws on construction codes, population density, floor restriction, plot to covered area ratio, etc and, on the other, the strength of the buildings would be suspected and it could pose a threat to the lives of the people using government buildings or those residing or moving in the vicinity of these buildings.

The sources said the issue of strength of the government buildings became a subject of national debate after the devastating earthquake that hit the northern parts of the country and Azad Kashmir a few years ago and it was seen that while many buildings and structures had collapsed, an overwhelming majority of government buildings, including the assembly building, the president’s house, prime minister’s house, secretariat, schools, hospitals etc could not sustain the tremors and collapsed, killing thousands of people. Before the government could take any action, the Supreme Court took suo motu notice and called government officials to find out the reasons behind the collapse of government buildings. Lengthy exercises were carried out by the provincial chief secretaries and it was revealed that though present in the law, the government departments rarely – almost never – obtained approval of their building plans from the local municipal authorities. So, the Supreme Court directed that appropriate actions be taken on the issue.

The sources said that following the Supreme Court directive the Sindh chief secretary also carried out extensive exercises to reach the conclusion that the government departments be directed to get their building plans approved from the municipal authorities.

Hence though already required under the law, the then chief secretary – it is a coincidence that Fazal-ur-Rehman held the post at that time also – issued a fresh directive {SO-APPLS-1 (SGA&CD) 24-209/2005 dated Jan 26, 2006} that all government buildings were required to obtain approval of the building plans from the authority nominated under the Sindh Building Control Ordinance 1979. These are exempted from the levy of scrutiny fees only, but the approval of the building plan is mandatory.

The sources said that although the law required, and it was reinforced by the chief secretary’s directive, government departments continued to construct their buildings without getting the plans approved from the KBCA.

A few weeks back Dawn had carried a report about the construction of the Secretariat Tower, right next to the chief secretary’s office, without the KBCA’s mandatory approval and the KBCA also issued a notice to the government to stop the illegal construction. When this reporter approached the chief secretary, he said the construction had been stopped and now it would be resumed after the KBCA’s approval was obtained.

A few weeks later, Dawn reported that the government was carrying out the construction of the secretaries’ flats in Clifton without the mandatory approval from the KBCA, which had also issued a notice to the government to stop the construction and get its approval.

The chief secretary again, responding to Dawn’s queries, assured this reporter that the construction had been stopped and it would be resumed after the approval of the building plans was obtained from the KBCA.

It is, however, unclear why such a blanket exemption has now been given to government buildings.

The implementation of a package worth Rs1.6 billion for uplift in Lyari is underway, Lyari Town Nazim, Mahmood Hashim, told The News. The Federal government, Sindh government and City District Government Karachi (CDGK) are partners in the Lyari package, in which the Centre would allocate 50 per cent funding while the provincial government and the CDGK would share another 50 per cent amount, he added.

The package carrying various uplift schemes, including provision of water supply, improving sanitation, education, health and promoting recreational activities for the area youth will be a ray of hope for Lyariites.

The Nazim commended the PPP-led government for designing a comprehensive package for Lyari, as during the past 11 years, neither were any uplift projects launched nor were jobs given to locals. This eventually gave birth to an army of criminals. Now, after the PPP came into power, the people hope to see great change around them. Hashim added that not only the PPP, but the CDGK authorities are also keen to develop the ignored old area.

Lyari has an old sanitation mechanism, which needs proper repair work, replacement of sewerage lines and changing infrastructure. Hashim said that an estimated Rs300 million will be directed towards installing new machinery and building ejectors to ensure that sewage flows to the Lyari River instead of small drains.

The plan is to stream the waste to the Mauripur Treatment Plant before releasing it into the sea, he said. “To keep the water supply system intact, we are

implementing a scheme worth Rs2.5 million to change motors at water pumping stations and lay new water lines to ensure smooth supply of potable water to the residents,” added Hashim.

The Nazim also said that Rs401 million would be spent on the renovation and construction of new roads, community centres and health centres. Shah Waliullah Road, Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai Road, Chakiwara Road, Faqir Mohammed Durra Road, and 12 other roads have been placed under this scheme, out of which work on four roads has already been initiated. However, before launching development work on roads, concerned civic agencies, including Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC), Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) and others

have been asked to complete

their work first to avoid

digging in future, Hashim told The News.

The town Nazim also revealed that there are plans to construct a flyover near Lea Market at an estimated cost of Rs700 million, since there is a junction at the market which links many areas through various routes. In this regard, a PC-1 has been designed by Planning and Development Department. The project will be a joint venture between the administrations of Saddar and Lyari towns.

Furthermore, Hashim said Rs220 million would be spent by the Federal government on the provision of electricity to the area.

In this scheme, a survey is being conducted to install and renovate floodlights at Peoples Stadium, International Football Stadium, Kakri Ground, Gabol Park, Kalri Ground, Sarbazi Ground, Moulvi Usman Park and other playgrounds to provide sports facilities to the youth. He believes that these facilities will help save the youth from indulging in criminal activities.

Hashim also stated that he has already initiated a move to get the Peoples Stadium vacated from the Rangers. “I believe that it was built for the Lyari people and only they have the right to utilise it for their activities,” he claimed.

The construction of a monument to pay tribute to the slain PPP leader, Benazir Bhutto has also been planned at the entrance of main Kalri Road.

Construction of underpass at Lea Market ordered

KARACHI: Federal Minister for Port and Shipping Nabeen Gabol said on Wednesday that directives have been issued for the construction of an underpass at the Lea Market in order to solve traffic problems in Lyari Town.

Speaking to Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Lyari President Dr Saleem Hangoro and other officials, the minister said that he had also issued directives to the National Highway Authority chairman for the construction of an interchange link with the Lyari Expressway. Both the underpass and interchange link will be constructed with financial assistance from the Karachi Port Trust (KPT).

Gabol criticised the former KPT chairman for spending millions of rupees on constructing a huge fountain deep in the Arabian Sea, saying it was a waste of money. “From now on, each and every penny will be spent on projects that will actually benefit the people,” said Gabol. He also mentioned that the government was striving hard to fulfill a development package for Lyari which has been approved by President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani.

When the hell they are planning to fix Drigh rd flyover, also need the interchange at Jinnah Terminal Ave on Sh Faisal.

Nazim Karachi Syed Mustafa Kamal has said that City Government had to start development works from scratch in all industrial areas of Karachi that took more resources and time, however, these areas have been provided with proper infrastructure including water and sewerage system first time in their history which cost Rs.4.5 billion to city government. Some of the projects were delayed due to shortage of resources but city district government Karachi has tried its best to complete them from its own resources and through bridge financing to save national resources from huge loss.

He expressed these views while talking to a delegation of industrialists and traders lead by chairman Landhi Association of Trade & Industry (LATI) Zahid Basheer at his office.

He said that Karachi holds unique status in the country and therefore its development projects must get especial attention both a provincial and federal level.

Nazim Karachi said that the city government has completed many development projects in Karachi costing billions of rupees during last three years which have provided lot of convenience to citizens. If these projects are not maintained and secured properly they would be devastated within few months. Therefore, he said, it is need of time to establish a development fund for Karachi projects under the supervision of prominent citizens.

“Industrialists and traders community with common citizens should contribute in this fund as this city would be able to run without funds” he added.

The City Nazim on this occasion directed to set up an especial window at City Government’s Complaints & Information Management Centre 1339 for convenience of industrialists and business community in Karachi.

He said that the window should be opened within few days and he will himself check all the complaints registered at this window on daily basis.

Nazim Karachi also issued instruction for start of construction work of four roads in the Landhi Industrial Zone and deputation of a senior engineer in the area.
Chairman LATI on this occasion apprised City Nazim about the problems faced by the Landhi Industrial Zone and thanked Nazim Karachi for completion of water and sewerage network in the area.

He said that Landhi Industrial Zone pays Rs.7billion per annum as tax to government.

KARACHI: The 122-year-old building of Dayaram Jethmal (DJ) Science College will soon be restored to its original glory as its renovation reaches completion.

In 2005, on the directives of the then federal government, the Sindh Works and Services Department began to carry out restoration work on Narain Jagannath Vedia (NJV) high school on M A Jinnah Road (former Bunder Road) and DJ Science College. The restoration work of NJV high school was completed in 2007 while the renovation project of DJ Science College started in June 2008 and is almost complete. The construction company is planning to complete the restoration work on the mezzanine floor by June, this year, after which the building would be handed over to the college administration.

Founded in 1887 by prominent Sindhi philanthropist, Deewan Dayaram Jethmal, the imposing building was inaugurated by the then Viceroy of India, Lord Dufferin. The officials records of the Sindh Culture Department reveal that the building was constructed at a total cost of Rs 1,86,514, of which Rs 97,193, was contributed by the government while the remaining was raised through public donations. Now, almost a century later, the Sindh government is spending Rs 6 billion on the restoration and renovation of the structure.

Located on Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Road, aka Kutchery Road, in the downtown area of Karachi where several buildings of the colonial era still exist, DJ Science College has been a witness to a lot of changes in the history of Karachi. It is also the alma mater of several prominent personalities, including SIUT founder Dr Adeeb Rizvi, nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, prominent politician and Sindh Assembly Speaker Nisar Khoro as well noted host and writer Anwar Maqsood.

The elegantly edifice of the building was constructed in the neoclassical architectural style with yellow sandstone while the floor was made with mosaic tiles imported from Belgium. Despite the passage of time, the magnificent domes and elaborately carved facades create an imposing impression.

In late 1980s’, the college administration carried out renovation work during which cement was plastered, hiding the original shape and the stones of the building. The construction company is removing the plaster and is planning to use sand bursting that would bring the building in its original shape.

The official records of the culture department reveal that the main facade of the building is 431 feet long, the plinth is five feet high with an open arcade of dressed stone running along the entire length of the building. A tall supporting doorway is positioned at the central entrance, which has about 29 feet tall ionic columns to support a pediment that used to have a clock in its tympanum. A beautiful central tower exists above the doorway to a height of 121 feet and is going through a 30 feet diameter dome. In the original building there were 30 lecture rooms, science laboratories and a library.

The Sindh government has also tendered to construct a new structure on either sides of the central doom where four big lecture halls on each side would also be constructed. Pearl Engineering and Trading Company Proprietor Shahid Imran, is looking after restoration work at the site. Talking about the restoration, he said, “We have imported iron garders from Germany for the roof so that it matches the original building,” said Imran. “There was a small wall of about four feet on the rooftop, we have raised that wall to six feet and have constructed lecture halls similar to the original style, so that it does not look like a new structure and blends with the old construction,” Imran further elaborated. When asked how the Sindh government has allowed the construction of a new structure on a protected heritage site, he said that the Sindh Works and Services Department has legally acquired the permission from the Heritage Department.

Meanwhile, when Sindh Culture Department Secretary Shams Jaffrani was contacted, he confirmed that his department has issued permission for new construction work.

“About five months ago we received a summary for permission to construct a new block on this protected site We placed the matter with the advisory committee and after reviewing how the company would undertake the construction work, the committee has issued permission,” said Jaffrani.

First parking plaza to be inaugurated next month

Tuesday, January 13, 2009

By our correspondent

Karachi

The first of the seven parking plazas being constructed by the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) will be completed and inaugurated next month. The plaza has parking space for 600 cars and 800 motorbikes.

This was announced on Monday by the City Nazim Mustafa Kamal while addressing a meeting to review development projects. The Nazim also directed officials concerned to expedite work on under-construction parking plaza projects so that they could be completed at the earliest. He criticised the businesses being done by the roadside and said unless such businesses such as showrooms of old cars are shifted outside the city, Karachi’s traffic problems could never be resolved.

“We are in contact with the provincial government and it is hoped that it would cooperate with us as our plans and suggestions are in the better interest of the city,” he said. Tenders re-invited for pedestrian bridges: The City District Government Karachi (CDGK) has once again invited tenders for construction of 10 pedestrian bridges with its own funding in the city.

The tenders were floated for the second time after no reputed company, including Pakistan Steel Fabricating Company Limited (PSFCL), took interest in construction of these bridges in the city owing to financial problems.

DHA told to submit new plan of Gizri flyover

KARACHI, Jan 13: The Sindh High Court on Tuesday directed the administrator of the Defence Housing Authority to submit a revised plan of the Gizri flyover till Jan 21 in a petition filed by residents of Defence against the construction.
Petitioner Salma Iqbal Chandrigar along with 12 other residents of Khayaban-i-Hafiz moved the court against the flyover’s construction from Submarine Chowrangi to Khayaban-i-Tanzeem on Gizri Road.

Their counsel, Omer Soomro, submitted that chief executive of the Clifton Cantonment Board/DHA administrator awarded a contract to M/s Nespak Pvt Ltd for the construction of 16foot-high flyover to ease a traffic congestion in the area. The construction firm’s staff dug up the road 20 feet deep. He stated that no prior notice was issued to residents to seek their suggestion regarding the flyover’s construction and they were deprived of their legitimate right of being protected from nuisance, pollution, and other natural corollaries of commercialisation by the Defence Housing Authority in violation of the Environment Protection Act2002. They prayed to the court that the construction be declared illegal, against the law while the Clifton Cantonment Board, DHA, Karachi Building Control Authority and City District Government Karachi may be restrained from carrying out the construction.

The counsel said that the DHA administrator be directed to file a revised plan of the flyover so that no environmental problems was caused as pointed out in a report of the Environmental Protection Authority on September 1, 2008.

An SHC division bench after hearing the arguments directed the administrator of the Defence Housing Authority to file the revised plan on the construction of the flyover.

Advocate Khalid Javed, who represented the DHA, assured the court that the plan would be submitted.

The matter was adjourned to January 22.—PPI

You must be talking about that Formula 1 turn near the FTC. That's the only dangerous flyover turning I can think of. The Karsaz flyover is also a rather steep turn if you're exiting onto it from Sh. Faisal, but people go to slow on that one, if anything.

Kamal opens 9 uplift projects in Gadap Town

Staff Report

KARACHI: City Nazim Mustafa Kamal said on Wednesday that the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) has always adopted a policy to lay the foundation stones of developmental schemes after the completion of at least 50 percent of the ongoing work.

Kamal paid a nine-hour long visit to Gadap Town, where he inspected and laid the foundation stones of nine major developmental schemes including the first ever CDGK owned Cadet College, a 50-bed hospital, a public school, two main roads and two small water retention dams.

“The purpose to visit Gadap Town was to inspect the process of ongoing developmental work and see how much funding is still needed to provide the town with urbanised facilities as soon as possible,” said Kamal.

Saying that it would take another three months to get the job done, Kamal added that the present CDGK initiated 72 developmental schemes in Gadap Town. “These schemes are worth Rs 2.65 billion, and include 37 schemes in the education sector, nine in the health sector, 21 roads and transportations schemes as well as five public health schemes. The CDGK has so far spent Rs 1.3 billion on these developmental schemes while Rs 1.5 billion would be spent further to complete them,” said Kamal.

An officer who briefed Kamal said that the approved budget for Gadap Town uplift was Rs 900 million out of which Rs 270 million was released last year and another Rs 100 million was released this year, however, the shortage of funds is hampering the projects severely. He said that CDGK would take the private sector on board to run the developmental projects such as schools and health care

Council okays setting up of rescue dept

By Latif Baloch

KARACHI, Jan 21: The city council has approved the establishment of a department to be called an “Urban Search and Rescue” in the City District Government of Karachi.

In this regard, treasury members of the Haq Parast group moved a resolution in the city council on Tuesday, which was approved amid a boycott of the vote by the opposition. The council meeting was presided over by city naib nazim Nasreen Jalil.

The council also gave its approval about salaries of the proposed department’s employees, their allowances, overtime payment and other expenses.

Opening the debate on the resolution, treasury leader Masud Mehmoud defended the creation of the new department, saying the decision was in line with the federal government’s establishment of the national disaster management authority and directives to all district governments to establish such authorities at the district level.

Initially, the Haq Parast leader said, these authorities would be created in Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi.

The treasury leader informed the house that the new department would have 86-strong staff that would be trained by foreign experts. He added that the city government would import trained dogs to be used when searching for bodies in the event of a disaster.

He said the decision was not taken by the city government and it was just implementing the directive of the federal government.

Taking the floor, opposition leader of the Awam Dost group Sheikh Mehbub criticised the attitude of the treasury benches for not taking the opposition into confidence on important issues.

He said the opposition benches were informed when the house session was called and they were not given sufficient time to study the draft resolutions and to prepare their submissions.

Mr Mebhub said any document submitted in the house would become the property of the house and every member should be allowed to freely express his views on it.

He went on to say that the basic function of the city government was to provide better civic facilities, improve the standard of primary and secondary education and that it must focus on improving the living conditions of human beings instead of wasting time on training dogs.

Mr Mehbub was followed by another opposition leader, Saifuddin, who reminded the house members that a district disaster committee was formed in 2005 but it was not allowed to function and now the idea was being revived by the present city government after a lapse of four years.

Responding to the comments of the opposition, treasury leader Masud Mehmoud said that mere declaration or notification of a project was not enough unless allocations for its implementation were made in the budget book.

Supporting Mr Mehmoud, another treasury leader Arshad Qureshi argued that mere paperwork was not enough and practical steps were needed for the implementation of any project.

He advised the opposition to shun the practice of opposition for the sake of opposition, arguing that if the idea presented by the then city government was good enough, the opposition benches should appreciate the same project which was being implemented now.

Mr Qureshi recalled various steps being taken by the present city government for the development of the city, saying that opposition benches appreciate it.

However, when the resolution was put to the vote, it was adopted as the opposition members did not take part in the voting process.

Earlier, when the house resumed its session several members drew the attention of the chair to the grievances of the respective union councils.

At the outset, opposition member Anwar Baloch complained that opposition members’ views had always been ignored, and even in condolence messages names of relatives of opposition members were omitted.

But the chair did not agree with him, saying that it was her firm view that all condolence messages should be submitted in the house with the consent of all members.

To record their protest, opposition members staged a token walkout. The leader of the house, Asif Siddiqui, left the house to persuade the opposition members and they then returned.

Water shortage issue

Thereafter, Anwar Baloch again took the floor and told the house about the water shortage problem in his union council in Orangi Town, saying that despite his repeated reminders to KWSB officials, no serious efforts had been made for its solution.

He said there was no proper arrangement for the lifting of garbage as health workers were not available for it. He urged the house to call the executive district officer (municipal services) to seek his views.

Majeed Baloch, nazim of UC-6, Lyari Town, called for the deployment of the Rangers and revival of the previous system of water supply under Rangers in his locality.

He also drew the attention of the chair to the insanitation and called for early measures to improve the situation.

Hut fires

Rafiq Ahmed, leader of the Al-Khidmat group, drew the attention of the chair to media reports about the burning of huts in Karachi recently, saying that interviews given by survivors indicated that the incident was pre-planned and aimed at “occupying the land for plotting purposes.”

Mr Ahmed also slammed the city government for not taking timely rescue steps to save the precious lives. He also called for an inquiry into the tragic incident.

However, treasury member and UC nazim Ismail Rajput did not agree with the contention of the opposition leader, alleging that the opposition leader was misguiding the house members.

Mr Rajput said he reached the spot immediately and joined the rescue operation. He told the house that steps were being taken for the rehabilitation of the affected families.

Treasury member Arshad Qureshi also called for lifting of the ban clamped on pillion-riding, saying that it was being misused by Rangers personnel.

Opposition member Yusuf Naz also drew the attention of the chair to the deteriorating condition of the Spencer Eye Hospital, saying that the building of the hospital was in a dilapidated condition and badly needed repairs.

He suggested that a house committee be formed to visit the hospital. Upon this, Ramzan Awan, another opposition member, suggested that the house committee made earlier be made functional.

Some treasury members complained that they had not received the monthly share from the octroi zila tax for the last two months as the funds were not being released by the Sindh government.

Upon this, Opposition leader Juman Darwan blasted the city government for “adopting delaying tactics” for the release of funds.

This was followed by an exchange of hot words between the two sides. However, the situation was controlled by a calm and composed convener, assuring that she would personally looked into the matter.

Thereafter, opposition leader Abdul Razzak announced his resignation from the advisory committee of the council’s monthly paper, saying that the contents of the paper did not reflect the ground realities.

Later, the convener adjourned the session to Jan 24.

If you think its jammed in the evening, you should try passing through there in the morning or afternoon when people are dropping off or picking up their kids to/from school, absolute nightmare.

The flyover should rise from where the Baloch bridge touches down and before the PAF colony gate, it should go over the signal by the two fuel stations and onto the expressway.

The first multi-storey parking plaza of the City District Government Karachi (CDGK), with a capacity for 800 vehicles and 300 bikes, will be made operational by February 20, City Nazim Mustafa Kamal said during a visit to the plaza in Saddar.

The project costs Rs700 million. Kamal was told that besides parking for vehicles, the plaza also provides space for offices, as well as a shopping centre. Modern scanning machines and cameras will be used to monitor all visitors and the plaza will be equipped with standby generators and a heavy lift for vehicles.

The Nazim said that the project should be completed within a month, and directed the allotment of a separate place for a vehicle wash at each floor. He asked the EDO Transport to conduct a complete survey of the entire area before opening the plaza so that Empress Market and other streets in Saddar could be declared parking-free zones. He said a detailed plan should also be forwarded to the DIG Traffic Police (Karachi) before the formal inauguration of the plaza.

Shopkeepers of Shahabuddin Market, Saddar, also met the Nazim and apprised him of their problems. He assured them that the city government would soon start development work on a second parking plaza in the area. It would have its own resources, and the original allottees of Shahabuddin Market would be given shops with ownership rights.

True, Naimutullah was also a good man. But it doesn't take anything away from Mustafa Kamal. They've both done a fantastic job in their terms.

26 Jan 2009:
Karachi Jan 26: Nazim Karachi Syed Mustafa Kamal has said that city government is establishing a well standard public school in Gadap Town on an area of 50 acre for which the construction of building and all other infrastructure has been completed. Not only the students in Goths would get free of cost and well standard education in this school but it would also attract people living in city areas.

He expressed these views during a visit to Gadap Town along with Chairman Zindagi Trust Shehzad Roy and Chairman Book Foundation Sami Mustafa on Monday.

The City Nazim on this occasion besides reviewing the provision of well standard education to poor and middle class children in rural areas also took some decisions.

He said that all arrangements have been made for establishment of public school in Gadap Town and the school would prove a mile stone in the history of the area.

Karachi looks very nice when the road markings and footpaths are there. It gives it a "finished" and tidy look.

But I still think they need to do more to get the concept of footpaths right. The footpath should go right through without being obstructed by illegal lawns and car parking. The obstructions on the footpaths cause the pedestrians to walk on the roads.

Karachi Jan 25: Haq Parast leadership in City Government had not only repaired and widened existing roads in Karachi but also constructed new roads to provide convenient travel to citizens living in different areas of the city.

Scheme 33, Surjani Town and its adjacent areas were connected directly to Superhighway through new roads as alternate to Sohrab Goth route which has increased the value of property in these areas besides raising the standard of life.

This was stated by City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal during a visit to Scheme 33, Maymarabad, New Karachi, Surjani Town and adjacent areas.

Nazim Karachi in his 4 hour long visit went to various areas and inspected ongoing development projects. He also reviewed the start of new projects and met with citizens.
The City Nazim on this occasion said that members of all housing societies of Scheme 33 were depressed till three years back due to the damage happened to infrastructure laid there 30 to 35 years back while the government had no planning for these areas and the land of these housing societies was encroached upon by land mafia. Haq Parast city government had in such circumstances paid special attention on the development and reconstruction of these areas and besides constructing main roads in Scheme 33 also connected Abul Hasan Ispahani Road to Superhighway via new road to provide direct link to highway.

He said that a new infreatructure of inner roads, water and sewerage system has been installed in whole areas after which the people started settling there.

Nazim Karachi in his visit to Maymarabad, New Karachi and Surjani Town also inspected the work on the bridge at Lyari River and the under construction road from Surjani Chowk to Superhighway.

On this occasion he said that the residents of New Karachi and Surjani had lot of problems in past. They had to take Sohrab Goth route to reach Superhighway. Although the construction of signal free corridor-II has lessened their problems but now a new road has been constructed for them to provide direct access to Superhighway.

He said that the two track bridge on Lyari River has also been constructed even though it was not the part of the planning for this road. Despite of that Haq Parast leadership planned and completed this bridge to provide more relief to citizens.

Nazim Karachi said that after completion of this road travel duration from Maymarbad, Ahsanabad, Schme 33 to Manghopir Road and Orangi and from Surjani, Baldia Town and New Karachi to Superhighway will reduce to few minutes.

He said that Haq Parast leadership believed in performing development works in each and every area of Karachi without any discrimination and it will carry on this process.

Nazim Karachi Syed Mustafa Kamal has directed to complete the flyover from Shah Faisal Colony to Korangi at Malir River before 31st January. He has instructed to finish the road carpeting work on both side of flyover and open it for traffic from 1st February.

During a 6 hour long visit of the city on Saturday Nazim Karachi also directed to prepare the PC-I for construction of bridge at Mehmoodabad Signal between Shaheed-e-Millat Road and Expressway.

City Nazim also went to ongoing development projects in Korangi industrial area besides inspecting the technical school established by World Memon Organization at Civic Center Korangi.

While inspecting the under construction bridge at Malir River, he directed officers of engineering department and contractor firm to complete remaining work by 31st January.
In a briefing on this occasion, City Nazim was informed that the cost the project is estimated at Rs.1300million. The whole project involves the construction of 5.25km long two track road from Singer Roundabout in Korangi to Shama Chowk at Sharae Faisal. Besides shifting of utility services at the edge of the road, storm water drainage system has also been installed at this beautiful corridor.

The completion of this longest flyover at Malir River would decrease the travel time for vehicular traffic between Landhi, Korangi and Shah Faisal Colony.

Nazim Karachi on this occasion directed to complete this important project at the earliest. He observed that the construction of this bridge would provide great relief to citizens throughout the year especially during rainy season when the people used to get stuck while trying to cross the flooded Malir River.

The City Nazim also inspected the signal at Mehmoodabad and noted that the traffic heading to Korangi and Defence area is facing hurdles in passing this junction therefore it is mandatory to construct a bridge at this place.

He instructed concerned officials to prepare PC-I for the bridge so that development work on it could start soon.

Nazim Karachi said that the Haq Parast city government has paid equal attention on resolution of traffic problems in each and every area of the city. Construction of new roads and improvement and widening of existing roads besides the availability of many flyovers, underpasses and bridges has helped resolving traffic problems.
He said that at the time when he first visited Korangi Industrial Area, the inner streets were found submerged with filthy sewerage water while the roads were in terrible conditions with tractors and trucks laid overturned by main road. Within a short period of three years complete infrastructure of water and sewerage has been laid in this area which is first time in its history and now the factories are being provided with water and sewerage connection.

Nazim Karachi said that the construction of nearly all main roads in Korangi Industrial Area has been completed and the area will now look clean even during rains.

Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer visits city, lauds development work:banana::banana::banana:
By Irfan Aligi, Daily Times

KARACHI: Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer on Wednesday arrived in Karachi on the request of City Nazim Karachi Mustafa Kamal. He was warmly received by Kamal at the Jinnah International Airport at around 11:30 am.

Kamal led the convoy giving Taseer a tour of the city, which comprised of a visit to the Corridor-I, Corridor-II, the Lyari Expressway, the Bagh-e-Ibn-e-Qasim in Clifton, inspection of Pakistan’s newly established biggest dental hospital, Karachi Medical and Dental College (KMDC) and the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

Taseer was accompanied by Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan, DCO Karachi Javed Hanif Khan and several CDGK officials during his visit.

Kamal briefed Taseer about the development work that has so far been completed and told the governor that the CDGK had laid a basic water and sewerage infrastructure for the city, adding that the infrastructure was even installed in the outskirts of the city. After the 30-minute briefing, Taseer was taken to the CDGK Command and Control Centre where the CDGK has installed a modern IT based vigilance system for the city and a complaint centre that responds within 30 minutes.

Taseer lauded the set-up, showing keen interest in the unique command and control centre, and said that it will greatly benefit the citizens of the city. Taseer went on to say that the federal government will provide all possible support for the development and reconstruction process taking place in Karachi and that he will speak to the federal government officials regarding the approval of various projects and schemes.

Taseer, during his speech at the Bagh-e-Ibn-e-Qasim, Clifton, said that he had mixed feelings about the city of lights. Elaborating further, Taseer said that he was glad to see the city progress in terms of development but expressed disappointment that no other city in Pakistan had witnessed such development in the past.

“On witnessing the exemplary spirit and strong will to serve the city and the country, I would like to congratulate the leadership of Karachi, especially Kamal and Altaf Bhai,” said Taseer.

“The citizens of the city are fortunate to have such sincere and hard working leaders. They have become role models for the work that they have done for the country,” said Taseer. While touring different areas of the city, the Punjab governor said that he was impressed and could not have imagined the extent of progress that had been made in the city.

“There are problems everywhere in the world but these should be addressed with honesty and dedication like Kamal has,” he said, adding that he would request the Lahore nazim to adopt the same criteria. “City Nazim Mustafa Kamal invited me to the city and now I invite him to visit Lahore and share his experiences with Lahore City Nazim Mian Aamir Mehmood as well as other Nazims,” said Taseer.

The governor rejected the notion that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) was against the local government system, saying that the PPP government believes that the local government system is a democratic one. He said that certain flaws in the system will be amended so as to make the system more transparent and beneficial for citizens.

Taseer lauded CDGK’s efforts and said that he had come to Karachi to see the projects that Kamal had undertaken. The governor also visited hospitals and medical institutions, including the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and the Karachi Medical and Dental College.

The governor was informed that the KMDC hospital has the capability of providing medical aid to 100 patients simultaneously. At the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Taseer inspected the latest facilities provided at the Trauma Center and the laboratory. Briefing Taseer, Kamal said that around 302 medicine companies are enlisted for provision of A-category medicines, while grade four medicines had also been recently made available. Kamal added that he had blacklisted two medicine companies for supplying counterfeit drugs.

Kamal thanked the Punjab governor for taking the time out to visit Karachi. Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan, quoted Taseer as saying that the MQM has two governors, Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan and Salmaan Taseer. During his address, Khan thanked Taseer for his support.

Guys at the site say that it is a huge project extending from "railway phatak" (Mai Kulachi road) all the way to Dr. Ziauddin Hospital. It would have a park and rides. According to them the contractor has agreed to complete the work in 4 months!!!! (?).

There is some expensive piece of real estate where new high rises might be constructed and Mr. 10% wants that to be settled outside the courts i.e. pay his ass a butt load of money and get the land.

KARACHI (February 01 2009): The construction of Rs 19 billion Pakistan Deep Water Container Port (PDWCP) project of Karachi Port Trust (KPT), which is to be built at Keamari Gronye of Karachi Port, would start from next month. Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping Babar Khan Ghauri announced this during a press conference at KPT headquarters on Saturday.

The minister was flanked by Chairman Gwadar Port Implementation Authority Rear Admiral Syed Afzal (Retd), KPT Chairperson Nasreen Haque, Director General Ports and Shipping Vice Admiral Asad Qureshi (Retd), Secretary Saleem Khan, Chairman Gwadar Port Authority Ehsan Saeed, Chairman Port Qasim Authority Afsar Din Talpur and others. Ghauri, who had also been on the same seat during the eight-year dictatorial reign of former President General Musharraf, said the proposed port would be completed in two different phases.

During the first phase the port would be dredged by 17 meter and in the second phase it would be deepened by 18 meter to accommodate mother vessels. To a query the federal minister clarified that Pakistan Navy would have to vacate the 584-acre land, to be handed over to Port of Singapore Authority , the concessionaire of Gwadar Port , for the development of Free Zone at Eastern Bay. "We would not let Pakistan Navy to deprive Gwadar port of that land and negotiations are on in this regard," he said.

Terming the road-and-rail linkages at Gwadar Port as imperative for making the deep-sea port a real gateway to Central Asia , the ports and shipping minister said his side was negotiating with the Ministry of Communications to expedite work on the project. Ghauri said that Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) was planning to acquire four new vessels, an oil tanker and three cargo ships, to cater to the growing needs of national and international sea trade.

Underlining the need to wage a concerted effort to take Pakistan out of the current security and economic crises, the minister criticised the holders and supporters of destabilising activities, like Long March. Such things, he said, would serve nothing, but weaken the crises hit country further. " Pakistan is facing grave challenges on the economic and security fronts, which require all of us to set personal vendetta aside," he added.

He said holding Long March for the restoration of an individual may never be in the interest of the country and "would weaken the country". "We believe President Zardari would fulfil all the commitments as we have found him sincere and the coalition government would, God willing, take the country out of ongoing crises," the minister resolved. He said he had asked his team to roll up sleeves for working hard in the current national and international economic crisis and work on mega projects, like Diamond Bar Island City of PQA and Port Tower of KPT would be expedited.

KPT to become world’s first port

having 18 meters draft by 2013

Sunday, February 01, 2009
KARACHI: Karachi Port will become the first port of the world to have a draft of 18 meters allowing cargo ships of over 100,000DWT to berth here by the year 2013.

In this regard, work on deep water container terminal at China Waters starts next month and will be completed in four years at a total cost of Rs19 billion.

This was disclosed by Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping Babar Ghauri while speaking at his first press conference.

Federal Secretary Ports and Shipping Mohammed Saleem Khan, Chairperson KPT Nasreen Haq besides Chairmen of Port Qasim and Port Gwadar, PNSC, DG Ports and Shipping and other senior officers were also present on the occasion. The minister pointed out that at present the draft at the port is 14.5 meters while many world ports have draft of 16-17 meteres. He said Deep Water Container Terminal will have a draft of 16 meteres in the first phase and further deepened to 18 meters in the second phase.

Ghauri, who earlier held a meeting with Chairmen of three ports and related senior officials, said he wants work to overcome Pakistan’s existing economic crisis and gave them required guidelines in this regard.

Referring to Gwadar Port, the minister said it still does not have road and rail linkages and he is going to tell the road and rail sector organizations to provide these linkages so that “our businessmen could import their goods through this port.” He said so far 12 ships with imported urea anchored at Gwadar Port and 10 of them have been offloaded. He said effort is being made to import wheat from this port.

He told journalists about his meeting with Balochistan chief minister and said the government would address their reservations. He said Balochistan bristles with its right over this port and reservations of the community there too would be addressed.

As regards the future projects, Babar Ghauri informed that work will be taken in hand on Port Tower and Diamond Island City while the city government will construct park at Boat Basin.

To a question, he said talks will be held with the Sindh government on Diamond Island City project. He said “it is in our manifesto that ports should be under the control of provinces.” In a response to another question the minister said plans are afoot to purchase one oil tanker and three cargo ships for PNSC. He said the work has been taken in hand for further modernization of country’s ports in view of changing conditions.

Someone living in Karachi told me this that's why I mentioned it and asked people to find out. It was a valid observation as you can see from the article in the Crescent Bay thread. It says that a lot of people in Pakistan have been wondering about these projects and there are a lot of rumors about them because of the state of the economy. Plus work on those sites is going very slow.

But now things are a bit clearer. At least Crescent Bay is still happening though it is slow.

You're right. I thought those silos were the co-gen plant and based on that I looked on Google Earth to see where the photo could have been taken from. Since that is not the co-gen therefore I think your observation is correct that the picture was taken from Bundle Island.

Karachi Feb 03: The first badge of the city government’s Call Agents and English language training program completed its course as 750 youths out of total 3000 selected for the training passed out on Tuesday. Governor of Sindh Dr. Isharat-ul-Ebad Khan gave away certificates to the participants in a ceremony held at Metropolitan Academy.

City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal, Naib Nazim Nasreen Jalil, Provincial Minister for youth affairs Faisal Subzwari, DCO Javed Hanif and Town Nazim Gulshan Iqbal Wasey Jalil was also present on this occasion.

In his address the Governor of Sindh said that Pakistan’s first I.T Tower is under completion and the City Nazim Mustafa Kamal has laid the foundation for provision of trained manpower to the project by arranging call agent training to 750 youths.

“This would in fact a long term investment for Pakistani youths that also provides assurance for a better future of Pakistan. Only trained manpower could play key role in the progress of the country” he added.

Governor of Sindh said the BPO at present is an emerging industry in the world but in our country it could not get any attention. Now City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal paid special attention on it. The youths after getting training of call agent would not only serve Pakistan but the whole region will be benefited from their expertise.

Addressing the program Nazim Karachi Syed Mustafa Kamal said that this is a unique project of city government under which it is spending Rs.120 million to impart I.T and English language education to over 3000 youths who would get a better future after completing this 6 months course.
He said that the city government was first time in the history of Pakistan spending millions of rupees on Human Resources Management to impart quality I.T (Call Agent) and English language training to 3 thousand youths from city’s low income areas and Katchi Abadies.

Nazim Karachi said that city government is spending Rs.60,000 per person for this training. The selection of the trainee was made without any consideration of caste, creed or language as it was aimed to help jobless educated youths to get decent and respected jobs in future.

He said that in past never any provincial, federal or district government in Pakistan spent a penny on the Human Resources Development while the city government has besides carrying out a number of development works in Karachi also taken measures to help provide better livelihood to youths. He further said that the project was unique in the sense that the training would ensure at least Rs.15 thousand a month job to educated young generation which would get even better with the experience. He said that presently the BPO was regarded as the fast developing industry in the world. The investment alone in this sector in United States has reached up to nearly $200 billion. “If we are not getting BPO business in Pakistan than it was due to the unavailability of trained manpower. Therefore we have taken initiative in this direction without waiting for any step from the provincial or federal government, the city nazim added.

He said that the city government could have instead planned some other huge project which the public would have remembered for decades but we did not believed in just getting praise for our works as we work to bring about more convenience and facilities in the lives of citizens.
Nazim Karachi expressed hope that the training program would besides providing respected jobs to our jobless youths also bring about foreign investment worth billions of dollar in the country. This step would provide good opportunities in future to our educated young generation especially for those who belongs to middle class.

Speaking on the occasion, City Naib Nazim Nasreen Jalil said that CDGK call centre and its first badge is another milestone in the history of Pakistan. Karachi has always brought about revolutions and the call center’s graduates would also cause a fresh revolution.

Later addressing a huge congregation of people, the governor said that the bridge has shortened the distance by 28 km and now the people of Korangi Town, Landhi Town and Shah Faisal Colony can reach the city centres within a few minutes.

This is the longest bridge ever built in the country and will not only serve the people of the surrounding areas but also the people related to the industries in Korangi and Landhi.

The governor said previously, the approval of the PC-1 would take years after which the construction work would take years to start and many projects were abandoned before they were completed. He went on to say that now, under the enthusiastic leadership of City Nazim Mustafa Kamal, development projects are completed within no time, as the foundation stone of this very bridge was laid down in 2005 and it has been inaugurated in 2009.

The governor said that the Muttahidda Qaumi Movement (MQM) not only constructs concrete bridges but also paves the way for bringing prosperity and stability to Pakistan.

Speaking on the occasion, Kamal said that a few years ago, passing the Malir River was unimaginable but now the people of the city can cover a long distance within minutes.

Kamal added that the Malir River Bridge has made the city accessible to all people regardless of what locality they live in.

The people from the DHA and Clifton areas are now frequently visiting the Liaquatabad and New Karachi areas due to the new underpasses, flyovers and corridors that have been constructed by the Haq Parast leadership.

Kamal added that the new look of the city has only been possible because of the Haq Parast leadership’s ‘City Ownership’ project.

Talking about the bridge in detail, Kamal informed the gathering that the PC-1 of the Malir River Bridge amounted to Rs 1.20 billion, which was funded by the Pakistani government under the Tameer-e-Karachi Project and also added that the construction cost came to Rs 1.057 billion.

$15 million for a 5 km bridge. That's a bargain.

One billion rupees in today's exchange rate is only $13.75 million. I calculated it with a higher rate for the rupee as most of the project was built when the rupee was 60/$.

The artical says it cost Rs 1.057 billion.

Karachi Feb 04: Nazim Karachi Syed Mustafa Kamal has said that Haq Parast leadership in city government has reconstructed Gulistan-e-Jauhar with a cost of Rs.2800million. The previously neglected area has now transformed into a beautiful locality of the city.

He expressed these views while addressing a huge public meeting in Gulistan-e-Jauhar after the inauguration of newly constructed 4km long road from Samama to Pehalwan Goth on Tuesday night.

The meeting was also addressed by MNA Haider Abbas Rizvi, Iqbal Muhammad Ali, provincial minister for youth affairs Syed Faisal Subzwari, MPA Dr. Nadeem Maqbool, and Town Nazim Gulshan Wasey Jalil.

Addressing the meeting Nazim Karachi said that the area of Gulistan-e-Jauhar was established 35 years ago. Since then it was facing lot of problems. Over flow of sewerage water had wrecked the roads and inner streets due to which even taxi and rickshaw drivers stayed away from the area. Today the same locality has changed into most beautiful and developed areas of Karachi.

He said that we have performed development works in Gulistan-e-Jauhar due to the fact that we felt pain of citizens. We live here and we have been reconstructing every area in the city without taking this into consideration that the area falls into the limits of city government or not.
Nazim Karachi said that we have installed a completely new water and sewerage system in Gulistan-e-Jauhar while the roads have been constructed as well standard tracks which have solved many problems of the area.

He said that the residents of Gulistan-e-Jauhar had not demanded for these works nor they staged any demonstration for that but Haq Parast leadership had itself taken up these projects for the convenience of the people.

Nazim Karachi said that the city government has carried out development works in nearly all areas of the city. We have worked more in just past three years if compared to the total workings happened in last 57 years. The people living in Gulistan-e-Jauhar now have signal free journey whether they come from Surjani, SITE, Tower or Landhi and the distance will be covered in just few minutes.

Speaking on the occasion the Gulshan Town Nazim Wasey Jalil said that all the town nazims in Karachi under leadership of City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal have worked as a team to solve many years old problems of citizens.

“The residents of Gulistan-e-Jauhar could not even imagine that the area would become so beautiful in such a short period,” he added.

Not that I mind, but was it even necessary to build a bridge and not a land road? Does that place ever fill out with water?

even if its fills once in a year, it will definitely require a bridge.
