This 'Chaar Minar' looks beautiful. Notice how nice it is compared to the ugly buildings in the background. It almost looks like it's made of plastic. They should build lots more of these.

As far as funding is concerned, I don't know, but maybe the city govt. 'persuaded' private companies to contribute the cost. It would make sense - let every big company build a public monument somewhere.

Looks huge !
I passed it just yesterday. It isn't really as big as it seems in the picture. And looks better than it does here.

Ooogabooga, you don't have to really measure. If you've driven it, you'd know it's not that long.

It is. It used to be a barren dry patch.

It wasn't that barren a patch and I kinda miss the two 'HUGE' trees on the edge of the roundabout that they chopped down, which I'm not so sure why, because they were not coming in the way or anything. But this char minar wannabe sure is one of the better looking constructions in this city, no complaints here. I just wish they had the brains to make something original.

I do remember him saying something about using that feature of the camera cheap, or something along the lines. *Ducks at the sight of a show flying towards him from an angry Umais*

Oh, btw, apart from Lahore's chowburji, and Deccan's Char minar, I just found out that there also happens to be a famous Chor Minor in Bukhara, which used to be an entrance to a Madrassa that no more exists. Now it serves as a shop.

Yes. I agree. But not if it's that ugly set of Pepsi monuments near the airport (which now say Lakson Tobacco or something, I think), or something as hideous as that Touchme Minto Toothpaste monument situated right in the middle of a roundabout near Dhorajee.

No! The CDGK is having every big state owned organisation (KPT and the likes) provide funds for some projects. KPT is really doing allot (except for the KPT Underpass, which is shit) and PIA was supposed to provide funds for this project, but they got the wind blown out of them before the project could ever start. :(

Because mushi told all the stake holders of khi to contribute in making the roads of khi better. I know statebank, pso(i think, i dont know for sure), pia, kpt and a few other institutions were suppose to fund the roads, underpasses and flyovers.
Till now only kpt is fixing up most of the roads etc. I think kpt is playing the role dat Port authority plays in Ny. Its gud to see that atleast sum institution is stepping up and trying to help. I dont know if pia has the funds to help anyone.

Construction work on four flyovers in Karachi worth millions of rupees has been started by the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) from Saturday.

According to informed sources, these are: Nagan Chowrangi, Gulshan Chowrangi, Johar Chowrangi and Askari Chowrangi. The estimated cost of Nagan Chowrangi flyover is Rs 500 million and the cost of other three projects is Rs 450 million each.

City government claims that once these flyovers are completed there would be signal-free corridor from Nagan Chowrangi to Karachi airport. At present there exists a signal-free corridor from SITE to Sharea Faisal.

These are the first flyovers in Karachi which have been started without any tendering process to save time for facilitating the citizens. The consultants have been hired and soil testing of these flyovers has been started.

This is for the first time that the CDGK has adopted this methodology for the completion of these projects without causing delays owing to various kinds of hurdles. It is hoped that soil testing will be completed in a month and during this period tendering process will be completed.

Sources, however, added that with the passage of time adjustments could be made in these projects.

Dream world hass the shitiest golf course ever known to man kind. And its not equipped to be used at night. Unless we are playing hide and seek rather then golf. The golf course in Bhurban(murre) is better then the one they have. The night golf course that DHA just made, its damn good. Been there a few times to play golf and its probably better then the one in dubai( i still prefer the karzaz one though).
As for the golf course, DHA didnt make this, the new malaysian management made it with their own money(i am talking about the new lights that they have placed through out the course).

uh..right..but I'm really not too sure about the city turning into 'the paradise city' with the addition of a plethora of ill designed flyovers. However, I completely agree that the Karachi Airport, especially its interiors need an upgrade. At the moment, the false ceilings look so old-fashioned, yellow and gloomy, the floors have become quite worn out at places, etc.

Array bhai, it was an original idea that I had all by myself months ago. When I saw the crooked Hasan Square flyover I had suggested that we latkao Mustafa Kamal by his nuts on a khamba in Hasan Square. And if not MK, then at least a town nazim or an owner from Mehran Builders. If we'd done it at that time then it would have put the fear of God in the hearts of everyone and we wouldn't have to witness this day.

KARACHI: City govt to unveil draft master plan in a fortnight

By Azfar-ul-Ashfaque

KARACHI, April 25: The city government will make public the draft Master Plan-2020 of Karachi within a fortnight after which it will be presented to the City Council for a formal approval.

City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal told Dawn on Wednesday that “in 10 to 15 days, we will present the executive summary of the draft master plan to the public through the city government’s website to seek feedback. There will certainly be a timeframe and afterwards, the document will be presented to the City Council for a formal approval.”

The draft master plan will probably be tabled in the City Council during the last week of May. The city government has been in the process of preparing the master plan for about a year during which it faced many problems in sharing the land records maintained by other land controlling agencies in the metropolis.

The proposed master plan advocates a single body responsible for the provision of uniform municipal services across the metropolis irrespective of its jurisdiction.

Officials said all stakeholders, including cantonment boards and the Defence Housing Authority (DHA), had shared their respective land record with the city government. The stakeholders also gave several suggestions and raised objections during a series of meetings with the city government authorities and the consulting firm hired for preparing the master plan.

The officials observed that the implementation of the Master Plan-2020 would be the most difficult phase of the process which would begin with the plan’s approval by the City Council.

“If it is implemented in its present form, then the city government will take responsibility of providing municipal services across the city and charge municipal tax from residents of DHA, cantonment boards and other land controlling authorities,” said an official.

On his part, Mr Kamal said that separate entity of each land controlling agencies in Karachi was duly recognised in the master plan which also contained the suggestions and proposals presented by each of them. The document covered the entire city and not just the CDGK-controlled lands.

According to the draft master plan, 30.9 per cent land is controlled by the CDGK; 17.7 by the Sindh government; 5.6 per cent by the LDA; 3.9 per cent by the MDA; 5 per cent by the DHA; 2.8 per cent by KPT; 2.01 per cent by cantonment boards; 1.5 per cent by PQA; 1.8 per cent by cooperative housing societies; 0.6 per cent by the SITE; 0.5 per cent by the federal government; and 0.4 per cent by Pakistan Railways. Private land in the city stands at 3.9 per cent whereas some 2.7 per cent of the city’s land has recently been allotted for industrial, educational and other purposes. The draft master plan shows 20.7 per cent land in city falling in the jurisdiction of the Kirthar National Park.

Digital Map: City Nazim Mustafa Kamal has directed the officials concerned to prepare a digital map showing all under-construction roads with each and every detail of the underground utility lines.

He issued the directive during his visit to the sites of various road projects in the city in the wee hours of Wednesday.

He called for setting up of a library in the Works and Services Department as a source of information about roads and the utility lines, and said the information would be made available to all utility service providers so that any damage in the course of digging and road-building could be avoided.

During his visit to Sohrab Goth Flyover site, he was informed that the second track of the flyover would be completed in two months and the underpass there would also be opened soon.

While visiting a project on Shahrah-i-Pakistan, he directed the contractor and officials concerned not to start digging of the Karimabad-Sohrab Goth track before completing construction of the service road in order to ensure flow of diverted traffic on the service road during the reconstruction of the track.

Mr Kamal directed staff and officials at the site of the under-construction I.I. Chundrigar Road to ensure provision of utility service lines and ducts with little distance between each two ducts along footpath to facilitate works by utility service organisations in future and avoid unnecessary road cutting.

KARACHI: Sindh govt recommends port at Keti Bunder

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, April 25: Sindh Chief Minister Arbab Ghulam Rahim in a meeting with a delegation of the World Bank said the Sindh government has recommended the federal government to develop third port in the province at Keti Bunder.

The delegation, led by World Bank Vice President for South Asia Praful Patel, called on him at the Chief Minister’s House on Wednesday.

The chief minister expressed hope that the federal government would soon come out with the scheme of developing new port. He said the Sindh government was implementing the coastal highway scheme which would give boost to the development of coastal areas.

He said the provincial government was spending Rs12 billion for implementation of development and non-development schemes in education sector. Likewise, special attention was being paid to the agriculture, irrigation and health sectors so that provision of basic education and health facilities to common man could be ensured.

Mr Patel said the bank had provided US$50 million for Sindh Education Development Policy and US$550 million for Sindh Water Improvement Programme. He said the World Bank would provide additional US$50 million for Sindh Education Development Policy and US$100 million for Sindh Physical Development.

Recalling the ongoing development schemes, Arbab Rahim said the problem of water shortage had been overcome by streamlining irrigation system. He said efforts were being made to provide electricity to all villages while road network had already been laid.

He said the province, which used to meet its expenditure through overdraft, had enough funds that enabled the government to carry out development schemes.

For the first time in the history of Sindh, he said, the government was spending Rs2 billion on executing schemes in coastal areas from Zero Point District Badin, Keenjhar, District Thatta and Mancher district Dadu and at Karachi Fish Harbour for providing facilities to fishermen.

Later, the chief minister hosted a dinner in honour of the delegation.

WB TEAM: The Vice-President of World Bank South Asia, Praful Patel, and other bank officials visited various localities of the town and inspected the development work being undertaken by Aga Khan Planning and Building Service, Pakistan with the support of Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund.

As part of the Sindh Coastal Area Development Programme, the Aga Khan Planning and Building Service is undertaking an integrated area development for Keti Bunder and surrounding villages.

Under the project, not only infrastructure is being provided for water, sanitation, drainage, solid waste management, lighting, street pavement and playgrounds, but also health and education facilities.

During the visit, Mr Patel said even though the project was still under implementation there was visible change in physical condition of the town as well as public morale, according to a joint press release issued by the World Bank, AKPBS and the PPAF.

He was informed that the people, who had started moving away from the town, had been returning as the health condition in the town was improving and the environment which was once polluted with stagnant water was now clean and healthy. Mr Patel said, “Children are the future of any society and provision of recreational facilities along with the basic amenities like clean drinking water, healthcare, education and sanitation will ensure a vibrant community poised to realize its potential.”

The project is expected to be completed by September and similar projects are being undertaken in many towns and villages of the coastal belt by the Sindh Coastal Area Network.

If we'd done it at that time then it would have put the fear of God in the hearts of everyone and we wouldn't have to witness this day.

hahahahah lush
MK=Mustufa Kuddal :lol:

God help us. Now the CDGK and Mehran Builders think that they're "Phannay Khan" and they're building more flyovers without even going through a tendering process. :gaah:

Yar Actually they started the process of Soil-testing(or the test of ability of ground to sustain the weight of concrete). This will be completed in 1 month, they've hired a consultant for Soil-testing. During this 1 month they will be advertising for the contractor(tender-processing) and then finally when the contractor will be awarded the contract, he will have nothing to do other than JUST-BUILDING IT.....JUST DO IT!!!

Construction started on huge ground for Karachi sprots complex at MA. Jinnah road, opposite AMMA tower

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i303/moazzam_/21-04-07_1854.jpg

This plot had an incomplete stucture for a HUGE HUGE shopping mall. I've been witnessing its pillers and under construction Mezzanine floor since my childhood, but never seen it progressing since ages though. PROJECT CANCELLED and being demolished for some another PROJECT or for a Sports Complex as you told.

Highlights:
1) CDGK will construct a Park (allegedly ) named PARK RIVER VALLEY from Hino Chowrangi to Malir covering 17 kilometers and area 4500 acres.

2) A RESORT will also be made in MANGHOPIR consists on an area of 1800 acres(equals to University of Karachi???? :hm:).

PAPER WORK OF BOTH THE PROJECT HAS BEEN DONE, WORK IS JUST TO BE STARTED....

3) Work has been started on QUAID PARK-200 acres in LANDHI, JHEEL PARK-19 acres in PECHS, AZIZ BHATTI PARK-20 acres in Gulshan-e-Iqbal and HILL PARK.

4) 25% work on GUTTER BAGHICHA**(where???) has been done.

Firstly, the goverment has launched Lyari Expressway Resettlement Project to resettle people living along the Lyari river into new settlements in Taiser Town. This project is expensive as government has to build infrastructure such as schools, roads, water, gas, and gutter lines.

Secondly, the word "Pak-i" is an insult word for all Pakistanis. So please avoid using this name as part of your username.

ISLAMABAD: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has committed a $400 million loan for the implementation of the Strategic Master Plan (SMP) Karachi, a government official told Daily Times Wednesday. The loan is part of the mega-cities-financing facility and would be available to Pakistan during the next fiscal year.

The SMP, in accordance with Vision 2020, is expected to be finalized during the next 40 days, said the official. The plan intends to develop road infrastructure so that problems such as traffic jams can be resolved. A $350 million mass transit project is expected to be constructed. The federal government will provide $120 million as a sovereign guarantee.

Authorities are also planning to run 8,000 CNG buses in the city during the next four years. All outdated buses will be scrapped after the SMP’s completion. The city is expected to attain about 250 CNG buses by the end of May.

The SMP also proposes steps for the effective control of incidents such as fires in multi-story buildings. It plans to seek improvements in existing health facilities at 273 hospitals, medical centers and dispensaries. Furthermore, the government is planning to invest Rs 16 million so that water and sewerage facilities can be improved. The cost of providing these facilities is currently estimated at Rs 2 billion, however, the SMP plans to replace and repair old lines so that long-term costs can be reduced. Furthermore, sanitation services are expected to be privatized so that the current garbage removal deficiency of 2010 tons can be resolved.

Moreover, the project position paper reveals that presently 629 MGD water is being supplied to Karachi out of which 445 MGD water is being filtered at five filtration plants. The Central Development Working Party (CDWP) has approved a Rs 3-billion project which aims to construct a water filtration plant at old NEK, however, it still awaits ECNEC’s approval. Furthermore, expansion in the existing filtration capacity of the C.O.D. hills filter plant has also been proposed.

KARACHI: City govt to widen Sharea Faisal

By Azfar-ul-Ashfaque

KARACHI, May 2: The city government has decided to launch the Sharea Faisal Widening Project at an estimated cost of Rs1.35 billion together with the Karachi Elevated Expressway (KEE) project.

Under the SFWP, one more lane will be added to Sharea Faisal, besides relocation of underground utility lines, renovation of service roads, removal of encroachment and beautification of the entire thoroughfare.

Allocated under the head of KEE project in the city government’s draft budget for fiscal 2007-08, the hefty amount of Rs1.35 billion would be utilised over a period of three years.

“The Karachi Elevated Expressway is a well-thought-out project and the widening of Sharea Faisal is directly related to it. M/s IJM Corporation of Malaysia will undertake the $350 million KEE project while the SFWP will be undertaken by the CDGK,” City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal told Dawn on Wednesday.

He said that the SFWP had been in the doldrums for long and the launching of the KEE project provided the city government an opportunity to start work on it simultaneously.

He said that after certification from the Environment Protection Agency, work on the KEE project would begin and within the next few weeks, the city government would start widening Sharea Faisal.

“Several public and private concerns have encroached upon both the service roads along Sharea Faisal,” he pointed out, adding that under the road widening project, all such encroachments would be removed and this would enable the city government to add an extra lane to both the tracks of Sharea Faisal.

Regarding the KEE project, he said the expressway would be constructed at a height above the existing flyovers over Sharea Faisal. However, shifting of underground utility lines would be the main concern while executing the projects. “The IJM will start work on the FTC section of Sharea Faisal towards the airport while the city government would start work on relocating the utility lines and widening the road.”

Mr Kamal said that the expressway and Sharea Faisal would cater 50 to 60 per cent of the city’s traffic. “Commuters coming from Site or Surjani will have a direct access to the Elevated Expressway through the signal-free corridors.”

Metropole
May 5th, 2007, 04:51 AM
By Muhammad Yasir

KARACHI: More than 25 vertical housing projects have been announced in various localities of the metropolis over the last four months. These projects will provide around 3,000 residential units of various categories to citizens.

That their prices will vary according to the value of the location is stating the obvious.

Details obtained from the booking offices of various projects reveal that 75 per cent of the housing units of different categories have been booked. In view of the surging buyer inquiries, it is expected that the remaining units would also be notched up by the end of this month.

Some housing projects have been launched in posh localities, including North Nazimabad, Defence View and Sharea Faisal and their prices are predictably among the highest.

The most pricey project has been launched in North Nazimabad after a very long time. The project named “Prime Galaxia Duplexes” is based on four- to six-bedroom apartments, each costing between Rs4.2 million and Rs9.8 million. It has 42 flats.

A tall 14-floor vertical housing project “Diamond Residency” was also announced in Defence View comprising 490 units with the aggregate cost ranging between Rs3.4 million and Rs2.8 million. Each apartment is of 4 and 5 bedrooms.

One project is being constructed on Sharea Faisal near Karachi Cooperative Housing Society (KCHS). Named Gohar Tower, the project comprises 300 units of 2, 3 and 4 bedrooms. Prices start from Rs3.5 million and go up to Rs6.4 million.

In the fast-growing and densely-populated Gulistan-e-Johar, three housing projects have been launched during the same period. They are designed to provide 300 units.

One project christened “Elite Comforts” is to offer 112 apartments, each made up of five to six bedrooms. Prices range from Rs3.2 million to Rs4.3 million, depending on how roomy the flat is and on which floor.

In Gulshan-e-Iqbal, two projects by the name of Rupali Twin Towers and Saim Apartments are coming up. They will offer 4- to 5-bedroom apartments with prices ranging between Rs3.2 million to 4 million.

These two areas are most noticeably witnessing skyward expansion, with builders unveiling project after project of integrated apartment blocs.

Gulshan-e-Maymar is another locality where pace of residential schemes’ development is pretty fast. In the Scheme 33, four housing projects have been launched under different names. Together, they are to offer 250 apartments of two to four bedrooms. Prices will range from Rs1.8 million to Rs2.8 million.

In these schemes, about 90 per cent of units have been booked. Lakhani Delux Apartment and Lakhani King Tower are the most recently announced projects where apartments are still up for sale.

Over the last six months, about 20 housing schemes of residential and commercial plots were announced in and around Gulshan-e-Maymar, Sirjani Town and Northern Bypass.

According to realtor Najaf Raza, the pace of plots’ and home construction is escalating in Maymar despite sluggishness being experienced by the city’s real estate market.

He pointed out that a large number of bungalows and apartments are being built in sectors P and Q. On the other hand, he said, land prices are also shooting up in these areas.

Near Two-Minute Roundabout in North Karachi, one apartment project has been launched, which comprises 158 units of 2 and 3 bedrooms. Prices are pegged anywhere between Rs2.2 million and Rs1.7 million.

Besides, three community-based vertical housing projects have also been announced in Scheme 33. They comprise 300 units of three- to four-bedroom category. They are slated to fetch a price between Rs2.5 and Rs3 million.

Three mega projects have also been launched in Defence VIII named Creek Vistas and Creek Marina.

Chairman of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI)’s Standing Committee on Housing and Construction Munir Sultan said these under-construction projects were too limited to cater to the demand of a growing population.

He said that about 1.2 million housing projects are required every year in Karachi to keep pace with the population growth. He stressed that the cost of housing projects should be controlled with the prices of land, so that lower-income and middle-class people could affordably find a shelter.

Builders claim that a majority of these flats will be built over the next four years, but these claims are always taken with a pinch of salt. It’s very rare that developers keep the promise and hand over the booked flats to buyers on time. Often the delay is by up to two to three years.

In addition to the negotiated price, builders also demand development charges which vary from Rs0.2 million to Rs0.5 million for each unit.

Pakistan now on the overseas property stage

International real estate investors with an eye for something different and potentially very profitable will be in competition with returning nationals in Pakistan. A new development in Pakistan just outside the southern port city of Karachi is under construction and will serve to put Pakistan real estate on the stage for international investors. Pakistan real estate has a lot to offer investors, including a growing economy and excellent year round weather. Visitors to the region are offered a variety of things to do from skiing in the Himalayas to cultural events such as concerts, cricket matches and plenty of shopping.

The Indus Valley Farmhouses Development has four one-story home layouts for potential buyers: The Green, Royal, Pink and Violet Farmhouses. The Green Farm House has 1,254 square feet and costs £62,908, while the Royal Farm House has 1,453 square feet and costs £40,476. The two larger houses are the Pink Farm House, at 1,800 square feet and costing £50,122, and the Violet Farm House which comes in at 2,258 square feet and £62,908.

CEO of Homesgofast.com Nicholas Marr is very excited about the project: “We specialize in emerging markets and I think this project will be especially attractive to investors looking to buy into a market at a very early stage.”

In addition to the houses in this new development there will be a whole array of amenities. In fact, a majority of the project will be in facilities to benefit the homeowners and residents of this resort. There will be a swimming pool for families, amusement and water parks, restaurants, a mosque, shopping center, family parks, golf course, squash courts, cricket stadium, cinemas and much, much more.

KARACHI: Work on two bus corridors to begin this year

KARACHI, May 6: The city government will start work on the construction of two of the four corridors for the Bus Rapid Transport System in the current year by utilising the first instalment of $200 million of the $800 million loan granted by the Asian Development Bank for Karachi Mega City Development Project.

In the projected plan, the first corridor is stretched between Surjani Town and Merewether Tower and the second between Orangi Town and Nazimabad, where it meets the Board Office section of the first corridor.

The other two corridors will later be linked with the Bus Rapid Transport System.

The third corridor connects Nagan Chowrangi with Sharea Faisal, where it meets the signal-free corridor whereas the fourth one links Safoora Goth Chowrangi and Numaish intersection via University Road.

The decision to start construction of the corridors was taken at a meeting held under the chairmanship of City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal. It was informed that the consultants of the project had already started their work on the project.

The nazim directed the departments concerned to provide their studies to the consultants in order to avoid any technical problem in the execution and completion of the project in a minimum possible time.

IT TOWER: An amount of Rs120 million would be spent on the training of 2,000 youth required to undertake the call seats job at the proposed IT Tower in Karachi.

This was stated by City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal during a briefing from the investor consortium on the IT Tower project here on Saturday..

DCO Javed Hanif, EDOs, representatives of consortium, besides the consultant and engineers of the city government, attended the briefing. The meeting gave approval to the design of the project.

The city nazim said that the consortium would provide Rs100 million while the remaining Rs20 million would be provided by the city government.

KARACHI, May 6: Two Air Quality Monitoring Stations have been established in the city.

The first air quality monitoring station has been set up in Korangi Industrial Area and the other in Buffer Zone. These stations would gauge the environmental pollution caused by noise and smoke emission.

Sindh Environment Minister Dr Sagheer Ahmed said these stations would remain active round-the-clock and measure the quantity of gases on daily basis.

He said the government was undertaking practical steps for the provision of pollution-free environment. He said the ban against plastic bags had been made effective. Awareness was also being created among motorists regarding noisy and smoke emitting vehicles, he added.

Besides, he said treatment plants were being established for tackling the problem of industrial waste.—APP

What's a 'bus corridor'....if it's just reserving a lane for buses...then why need to spend millions on it? From the money being spent...it seems like some sort of elevated lane reserved for buses or something.

KARACHI, May 20: Notwithstanding the rosy statements and spree of feasibility studies done by foreign experts, the revival of Karachi Circular Railway (KCR) is in the doldrums.

Last week, Federal Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmad said on the floor of the National Assembly that revalidation of a feasibility study was being done by the Pakistan Railways through international consultant, who would submit their report within two months. He said that the City District Government Karachi and the Punjab government were conducting feasibility studies for the introduction of Metro Train Service in Karachi and Lahore, respectively.

A feasibility study for the KCR revival had also been done by the Japan External Trade Organisation. It started the study in October 2005 and submitted the report in March 2006. The study puts the cost at $872 million and, it is learnt, some Japanese firms and banks are keen to offer the required loans. Recently, the newly appointed representative of the Japan Bank of International Cooperation in Pakistan called on Sindh Chief Secretary Shakeel Durrani and offered the financial assistance.

It may be recalled that in 2004, President Pervez Musharraf had ordered revival of the KCR in two years. Work on the project was started and on March 8, 2005, it was partially revived and a service between Landhi and Wazir Mansion resumed. It was expected that the service would soon be extended to Nazimabad and Gulshan-Iqbal in the next phase but it never happened apparently due to intervention by vested interests. For the people in Karachi, it is really intriguing that the revival of an existing system is hitting delays of years. All the required facilities and infrastructure are available and all that is needed is the will to make it functional. People cannot afford waiting for decades for an urban rail system of European standards and they are content with the available rail system with essential facilities.

The Pakistan Railways is capable of running fast trains between Karachi and Peshawar and is certainly financially and technically sound enough to operate the KCR without help or assistance of foreign experts and their feasibility studies.

Moreover, it could also arrange funding through the government from financial institutions and private sector.

Revival of the KCR has already been supported by the experts associated with Pakistan Institute of Development Economics, Higher Education Commission and Standing Committee on Scientific and Technical Cooperation in a report titled “Technology-based industrial vision and strategy for Pakistan’s socio-economic development.”

The KCR would not only help reduce traffic congestion in the city but also provide an alternative means of transport in the event of strikes, heavy rains or such other problems.—PPI

people that are coming from NIPA towards Hasan Square and want to go left towards Time Medico take that internal route behind the National Stadium because, the left turn on Hasan Square is blocked due to some construction work that is going on there. i dont know exactly what is being constructed there, possibly the leftover flyover part. i go this way daily and come back from office taking the proper corridor road.

Development: Calls for more efficiency

Karachi: The construction and development work will be done without any discrimination among the people, and the officers of union councils (UCs) should make contact with the public stronger, said Orangi Town Nazim, Abdul Haq.

He was addressing the town administration with regard to the provision of basic utilities. A meeting with the administration officers from the department of electricity, water and sewerage board, the city government

and other departments was also held.

There was inspection of the developmental work being done. At the moment there are three main roads being constructed in Orangi, namely Shahrah-e-Orangi, Shahrah-e-Qazzafi, and Molana Shaukat Ali Road, which the Nazim instructed to be completed as soon as possible. Like other town nazims, he reiterated that there should be regular cleaning of storm water drains.

MALIR TOWN: Town Nazim, Ansar Ahmed Sheikh stated that most of the population of the town has been living in the underdeveloped areas for the past many years, which was why they did not have any basic facilities available at their doorstep. Talking to the people at UC 7, Ghazi Dawood Borohi Goth, Sheikh tried to ease their problems by saying that the local town administration has supplied clean drinking water, and installed a proper sewerage system.

SHAH FAISAL TOWN: The anti-encroachment department of the Town Municipal Administration conducted an operation in which they removed several encroachments including pavements, galleries, workshops and vehicles said a press release on Tuesday.

Moreover, encroachments in Gulshan-e-Qadri, UC 7 and in Rafa-e-Aam Society UC 6 were also removed. The anti-encroachment operation was conducted under the supervision of Town Officer Regulation, Abdul Aziz who was assisted by town police and other town officers. Town Nazim Mohammad Imran while inspecting on-going work also expressed his views saying that these encroachments are obstacles in the process of development and will not be tolerated at all.

Musharraf to inaugurate LPG terminal at PQ

KARACHI: Preparations are complete to start offloading of imported Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and President General Pervez Musharraf will inaugurate the designated terminal at Port Qasim on Friday.

Babar Khan Ghauri, Federal Minister for Ports and Shipping announced this at a press conference at Karachi Press Club on Thursday.

The President will also be the chief guest at the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal at the same port, he added.

The LPG terminal was constructed by a consortium of Kuwait and Malaysian groups in association with National Logistic Cell (NLC). The cost of construction for the LPG terminal was $50 million, he said.

Present government is concentrating on these projects to overcome the shortage of energy and gas in the country by importing these, he said.

Associated Group will build the LNG terminal with the cost of $62 million on BOT basis for the period of 30 years, he reminded.

During this period, the Port Qasim will get the revenue of around $142 million, he said.

Ghori also reviewed the old projects in his ministry and said that flyover at Hino Chowrangi on Korangi Road would be complete in a week and the President General Pervez Musharraf will inaugurate it in the first week of June.

He said that the projects of Food Court at old Native Jetty Bridge, Port Tower and Port Shipping Mall at Keamari Boat Basin are delayed but these will also be started soon.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Port Tower will be held on August 14, he said and added that it will be 10th tallest building of the world.

A civic centre at Gawadar Port will also be built that will be completed in 18 months after the groundbreaking, he said.

The minister for ports and shipping said that during his tenure, shipping protocols with the India were signed and after this, seven vessels of Pakistan National Shipping Corporation have lifted Indian cargo that is the new thing.

He also reminded that his government is adding two tankers and one bulk carrier in the PNSC fleet.

Pres. Musharraff stated, ''It is responsibility of everyone to play a positive role while living in this city, which has witnessed massive development in the past couple of years with a visible change in the very face of the city where so many under-passes and flyovers have come up and where work is to start on an elevated expressway and mass transit system and where Northern Bypass and Lyari Expressway are being constructed. Such massive development was never witnessed in the past''.

Asian Development Bank (ADB) has committed a $400 million loan for the implementation of the Strategic Master Plan (SMP) Karachi. Vision 2020 plan intends to develop road infrastructure so that problems such as traffic jams can be resolved.

CDGK will spend Asian Development Bank’s first installment of $ 200 million on the 100 km long road network meant to launch rapid bus transport system.

Four corridors will be used in this network and the work on two corridors will be started this year. The first one runs from Surjani to Tower via Nagan Chowrangi, Board Office (Nazimabad), Lasbella, Numaish and Saddar, while the other corridor that starts from Orangi Town will merge into the first corridor at the Board Office (Nazimabad), and from Saddar it will be diverted to Cantt Station.

The other two corridors will be later connected to this network. The third corridor will be from Nagan Chowrangi to Drigh Road, Sharea Faisal, signal-free corridor; and the fourth one will be from Safoora Goth to Numaish Chowrangi via University Road.

“Signal-free corridors, underpasses and flyovers are being rapidly constructed in the city, besides a bus transport system is being introduced with the funding of the Asian Development Bank,” City Mayor added.

A stretch of I.I Chundrigar Road, from Merewether Tower to Habib Bank Plaza, has been opened to traffic. Pointing out that work had started on it just one-and-a-half months ago (on April 5), Nazim Karachi Syed Mustafa Kamal has said that the city’s Haq Parast leadership fulfilled another promise made to the citizens of Karachi.

Work on the other stretch (from Habib Bank to Shaheen Complex) has also been started. Kamal said that this stretch, too, will be completed in record time and will be yet another achievement for the city and country. At the start of the re-construction of I.I. Chundrigar Road, it was claimed that work on this vital track will be completed in a total period of four months.

Kamal said this while talking to newsmen during his visit to I.I. Chundrigar Road on Sunday, saying the most crucial thing at this road was the completion of the storm water drain by KWSB. He said that the storm water drain on I.I. Chundrigar Road would be completed in four months.

To a question whether or not the CDGK would allow public transport on the road, he emphatically said “No”, adding that, the banks located on this road have collectively made arrangements for a luxurious shuttle service for the people.

He said that sophisticated signals will be installed on this road, which would be controlled through a computerised system.

“I.I. Chundrigar Road is the most important corridor of the country and it is being reconstructed on a war footing, while efforts are being made to make it a model road of Pakistan,” he added.

Mustafa said that this road had to be completed in one-and-a-half years time, however, considering the problems of the citizens the CDGK carried out its construction work on emergency basis and within a record time of one-and-a-half months a part of this road has been opened for traffic.

He said this road would be made a very beautiful artery and a model road of Pakistan, adding, the reconstruction of this road would also benefit old Karachi areas like Kharadar, which would be provided with storm water drainage system.

The Nazim further said that it was for the first time that banks and financial institutions extended their cooperation for revamping infrastructure in Karachi, adding, “I am sure that this process of joint venturing will be strengthened in future, which is a good omen for the city”.

Future of shop owners, bungalows under threat

By Aisha Masood
Karachi

Shopkeepers at Gizri market and the bungalow residents on Khayaban-e-Hafiz have expressed strong reservations over the construction of the Gizri market flyover which they say will play havoc not only during construction but later, too.

According to details provided by the DHA, the flyover will originate from Submarine Chowk and will terminate short of Khayaban-e-Tanzeem, — a distance of 1.2 kms.

A committee of shop owners, Anjuman-e-Baashindagan, Clifton Cantonment, Karachi, has written a letter to the DHA Administrator, Brig Kamran Aziz Qazi citing reservations as well as their recommendations on the flyover's construction. The General-Secretary of the committee, Mohammad Aslam, told The News that the value of their shops will be adversely affected. "Many of the shop owners also live in the same area. I was born here and my family has been living here since 1957," said Aslam.

Instead of demanding that the flyover not be built, the committee gave its own suggestions to the DHA for consideration. They suggested that structure of the flyover should start a little before Punjab Chowrangi/Submarine Chowk on one side and extend beyond Khayaban-e- Shahbaz, after crossing Khayaban-e-Shamsheer.

The shopkeepers fear that once the flyover is built, traffic congestion will increase at the intersection of Saudi Consulate which is a short distance from Tanzeem.

Secondly, they insist that the height of the flyover should be 18-20 ft 'at least' (whereas a DHA spokesperson confirmed that the height of the flyover is 5.1 metres equivalent to 16.5 ft) so that heavy vehicles can pass beneath the flyover easily.

Shopkeepers told this correspondent that they had requested the DHA administration to provide a copy of the project's site plan but there has been no response.

Moreover, other residents of Hafiz have also expressed doubts over the flyover's construction. "It will not only create a mess but will also add to the noise pollution," said one. "Everyone knows what kind of scenario emerges underneath flyovers," pointed out another, adding, "No one wants drug peddlers and suspicious characters in front of his house."

Lack of privacy is another issue. "Once this happens, we won't be able to enjoy our terraces as we do now," complained Mrs. Akmal, a bungalow resident. More worrisome, is the fact that the value of these bungalows will decrease to a great extent if the flyover is made. Residents say they won't oppose the project if their plots are converted into 'commercial plots' so that they can sell and move.

Although most of them admit that the thoroughfare witnesses traffic congestion, residents believe that there are other solutions to this problem. "The only requirement is to handle the traffic appropriately, as the actual problem lies in the double-parking trends on main roads, which restricts smooth and free flow of vehicles," said one.

They also feel that the flyover will hamper the flow of fresh air to their west open homes. Moreover, it will bring dust and pollution into their beautiful bungalows and expensively maintained gardens. Most of the dwellers have commented that if this flyover is constructed, they will have to leave the place.

When contacted, DHA spokesperson, Col. Naqvi said that all these are minor issues and have to be countered for the solution of bigger problems.

The construction of the flyover started in April at an estimated cost of Rs530 million. The 15-metre-wide flyover is a 'mono pier' type, comprising four lanes (two on each side), each being 3.5 metres wide. There will be three crossings provided under the flyover, as per the details provided by DHA.

They really need to do something about this stretch. But a flyover, I don't know. I'm 60% for the idea. The remaining 40% is unsurity whether it's a good idea or not. As for the shopkeepers, tough luck! I feel for them, but their excuse is dumb. What they are basically saying is that we are selfish, let everyone go thru the agony of passing thru here, so that our shop prices remain high. Yeah, right.

UAE FIRM TO CONSTRUCT 5 STAR HOTEL IN KARACHI.

May.29: A renowned firm from UAE has expressed interest in the investment of US300 million $ in the hotel industry in Karachi.

Chief Executive of the company Hasan Farid Khan who called on Nazim Karachi Syed Mustafa Kamal along with a delegation in his office said that his company has its office in UK and also set up an office in Dubai for this region and now decided to construct a five star hotel in Karachi for which we need cooperation from the city government.

Advisor for provincial government Faqir Jadim Mungrio was also present on the occasion.
The Chief Executive of the company said we felt pleasure by the progress of Karachi. Law and order situation here is quite well and they see no problem for investment here.

The City Nazim said this is first time in Karachi that many mega projects have been initiated and heading for completion with unprecedented pace. In the past no attention was paid to this city although Karachi was a commercial hub of this region, however the present city government has given top most attention to Karachi and an international standard infrastructure is being provided while Rs.35 billion uplift works are presently undergoing in the city.

Recounting the steps taken for advancement in the investment process he informed delegation that exceptional facilities are being provided for businessmen, traders and investors besides the local industry is getting fruits of uplift works carried out in industrial areas with a cost of Rs.4.5 billion and all these projects will be started to complete by the end of June this year. He further said that these steps have paved the way for lot of investment opportunities in Karachi which were not seen before. The city government has signed agreements with many well known international companies and with a result of that a direct investment of US 1.2 billion $ was made in Karachi.

Regarding mega projects he further elaborated that work on Elevated Expressway will soon started as the construction company from Malaysia has already set up its base and site offices in Karachi while work on I.T Tower and Mass Transit System will also be commenced early and this will not only boost up investment in city but will also enhance revenue for city government.
He said that the city government is not selling its land but using it in a better way to save its land as well as to increase the revenue.

Nazim Karachi said that the city government besides providing land for investment would also extend cooperation to the investors who wish to start their business in the city while their investment will also be ensured full security.

Chief Executive of company Hasan Farid Khan afterwards while talking to the media alongwith Nazim Karachi and provincial advisor for Sindh Government said that despite negative propaganda of western media against Karachi there was no such situation here and my company has decided for an initial investment of US 300 million$ in Karachi while more investment will be made later.

He declared meeting with Nazim Karachi as successful and said that work on the joint project will begin after inspection of the site. He also thanked Nazim Karachi Syed Mustafa Kamal for assuring every possible support

Its wonderful to see that the authorities are taking such step as its desperately needed. The city has way too many health scares of viruses and proper food inspection and management should help alleviate health fears of public.
Hopefully it'd trickle down to local stores & vendors too, as public becomes more aware of the hazards of poor transportation & storage methods, along with washing & spraying of the produce with unclean water which causes diseases.

Next thing I wanna see is clean vendors. And please no mukhi/majhar so burger families like us from abroad don't get sick there.

widening is good but for wht? making more room for hyper drivers? :ohno:
more consideration is required for strict traffic rules and honest force on ground, instead of spending millions on just widening the roads like this if they spend same money to buy sophisticated traffic control system technologies, installation of speedcams, traffic enforcement camera etc. etc. then im sure problem could solve.

Sohrab goth flyover.

We definately need proper traffic management, regarding the University Road that is being widening, I remember when I was there, they created this proper turn on that road and what happened afterwards was hell.

Technically it was a proper turn, but instead of waiting in line, people were coming from the opposite side and blocking the whole traffic due to it, may sound confusing but for those who've been there and seen what I'm talking about, its quite hilarious.

This is what I'm talking about, people would come from the side lanes to make the turn (Red arrows)

It is similar to center lane in North America.

"Waiting in Queue and giving way" is something we, as a nation, couldnt learn yet. I dont know when we will.

I know what you're talking about, they've now removed that partition so it's much better now. They really need a proper solution to turning on that road. Usually I'm against it, but sometimes you have to dumb things down to people's level.

The best thing they can do now is make something like a "U" shaped flyover for U-turns, although it should be done at traffic lights, the Civic centre intersection and the NIPA ones are just crazy aswell.

Looks quite a thin road, sorry I've never been to I.I.C

The angle of the picture makes it look narrow. For a sense of scale look at the guys walking on the road couple of metres down. The road is wide enough to accomodate 5 lanes.

^^ yes thanks for the response. You are right that the angle is making an illusion here but 100m is more than a fcuking football field in length.

Exactly what I had in mind. Also for some other roads (Sh-e-Faisal, for example). Secondly, IIC is NOT 100m wide! That's impossible, not even worth double-checking that. 100m, are you kidding me? That's like what, 20 lanes or soemthing! It's about 15-20m wide. Add in another 2.5m for the sidewalks.
