View Full Version : What do you think of the Port of Los Angeles?
Westsidelife January 31st, 2006, 04:29 AM I think that the San Pedro Harbor needs to be upgraded. It's not attractive. Aren't there train tracks there and we could have some sort of metro system connecting from Downtown to the port. what about Long Beach? I haven't been there in a long time. How is it there?
CarsonCaliBrotha January 31st, 2006, 04:48 AM Well it IS a port, it's not supposed to look attractive.

Well also the pier. SF has a decent pier. And I love the one in Honolulu. Something that makes a good impression and attracts people.

San Francisco's piers aren't really used to move cargo anymore, and so they've found new uses for them. They also work well because they're in a more central/tourist location. In the list of places to see in LA, I don't think san pedro strikes many as a tourist destination.

Is Long Beach touristy? I still think San Pedro's pier should be decent at least.
Fern~Fern* January 31st, 2006, 07:08 AM The port of Los Angeles, is the money maker for the city. Also San Pedro is going to get a new residential tower. Might not be much but it's a start.
svs January 31st, 2006, 07:16 AM Actually there's a lot more to do down there than most people realize. Long Beach is under major renovation, especially downtown, with a great aquarium, good restaurants on Pine street, a decent club scene, the Long Beach grand Prix, new movie theaters, some very good restaurants (Opera, etc.) and bars (Yard house), the new museum of Latin American Art and of course the Queen Mary and that soviet submarine the Scorpion.
San Pedro has a little farther to go but it has my favorite Greek restaurant in S. Cal, the Papadakis Taverna, it also has a small but hands on Aquarium designed by Frank Geary, and a separate marine museum.
Ports of Call has seen better days but you can still get something to eat and catch boats to cruise the harbor or go whale watching. They have a little kiddy fair open during the summer.
You can also board big cruise ships to Mexico or catch the Catalina express, here or in Long Beach.
You can buy a whole fish at the Mexican or Asian Markets next to the harbor and they will fry it up for you and you can feed the whole family....cheap. Veggies extra, but no charge for live mariachi music on the week ends.
San Pedro has a working red car that kind of goes between attractions.
Close by is the Pt. Fermin lighthouse, the old fortifications of fort MacArthur, a marine mammal rescue shelter, and the beautiful "peace bell" given to Los Angeles by the people of Korea.
The last time I looked there was a facility that was teaching kids how to build tall ships and the S.S. Lane Victory was open for tours. There are concerts at the refurbished Warner Theater.
The drive along the Palos Verdes Peninsula is one of the most beautiful in the county. If you have the $300.00 green fee, you can golf at Donald Trump's newly fixed up golf course that used to be Ocean Trails.
And by all means visit the Wayfarer's chapel, Lloyd Wright's greatest work and one of the most beautiful little places of worship in the state.
Think that will keep you busy for the day?
LosAngelesSportsFan January 31st, 2006, 08:25 AM Long Beach Looks great and has changed dramatically in the last few years and has a mini residential Boom going on with about 15 - 20 towers either recently completed, under construction or approved, maybe even more. Alos, the San Pedro Water front is getting a major renovation and there are many plans for the area, from cleaning the air though changes at the port, to other atrractions and residential towers. it has a long way to go, but can be a great area of LA witha little love and investment.

I go to that restaurant a lot and enjoy watching the cruise ships pass by. I'm definitely looking forward to going back to Long Beach. Very beautiful. Are there any good places to eat on the waterfront, overlooking the water?

Parker's lighthouse in Shoreline village is an old reliable and moderate. For fine dining, try the "Sky Room" with its high up view of the harbor.
Fern~Fern* February 1st, 2006, 04:43 AM Try the Yard House, next door to Parker's LH.
LANative February 1st, 2006, 06:57 AM Isn't Long Beach the busiest port in the country?
mongozx February 1st, 2006, 09:58 AM ^^yes it is. Actually the port complexes of Long Beach and LA make up the US's busiest port.
And with the mind-blowing economic growth in China the ports will only get even busier. so busy that some maritime companies will have to find alternatives to the gridlocked LA/Long Beach ports. Namely Oakland, Seattle, and Mexico.
LANative February 1st, 2006, 10:14 AM ^^ Especially with all the goods coming in from China.
archd1 April 8th, 2006, 02:16 PM Here's what's proposed for the San Pedro/LA Harbor area: THE PORT OF LOS ANGELES WATERFRONT DEVELOPMENT

Here's a link for more images and information on the project:http://www.portoflosangeles.org/community_waterfront.htm
Total development cost is about $700 million but will be built in phases. If you've been down there recenty (I was to see the Queen Mary 2) they've developed a portion of the promenade, placed lights on the Vincent Thomas Bridge and of course, the trolley is running.
-Corey- April 10th, 2006, 08:44 AM Yeah,,San Pedro Harbor needs to be upgraded right now..
