My wife and I currently live in Vancouver BC. We are seriously considering cashing out of here and moving to Nova Scotia
Thinking of maybe a small acreage or small hobby farm.
Close enough to civilization, but quiet.
Several suggestions have been Cape Breton/ Port Hawkesbury or Tatamagouche. Someone said Annapolis Valley was the best choice. Also New Germany was mentioned. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Annapolis Valley is probably the best combination of scenery/close to Halifax (about 1 hour away, depending where in the valley you settle). Port Hawkesbury has a pulp and paper mill, but the smell is only an issue in town for the most part, and the wind usually blows the smoke away from land, it's about 1.5 hours from Sydney and about 2.5 hours from Halifax, and there's nice land all over Cape Breton island, though fertility may be an issue. There's another pulp and paper mill near Pictou that can easily cause smell issues in the wrong area, you'll always smell it on the Sunrise Trail in that area. Don't know much about the Tatamagouche area, nor New Germany. It all depends on what your priorities for the features of the place are. Don't know if that was any help.

Sambro and Musquodoboit are both good choices if you're looking for something on the coast, they're both about a 30 min drive from downtown Halifax/Dartmouth.

For hobby farming, Annapolis Valley would be best though I am biased haha)

Lots of fertile land, mild springs, warm summers etc. Its close to the city, plus there is plenty of shopping in Kentville/New Minus/Coldbrook corridor. The economy is thriving in the eastern Valley(Kings County)

^New Germany is in Lunenburg County, about 80 km west of Halifax.

My favourite part of Nova Scotia is that area around Lunenburg County, Southwest of Halifax, and is called the South Shore. It seems to be one of the nicer and wealthier parts of NS. The scenery there is the closest to that of the New England states.

Yes, the South Shore is arguably the nicest all around, but you get what you pay for basically. Waterfront property will cost a lot. You can get it in Northern NS for less but that area is farther from the city and the climate is considerably worse.

Hi guys, I am new to the forum. I grew up on the South Shore (Bayswater, near Chester) and I would recommend it to anyone who wants an excellent place to live :) Waterfront lots are pricey though, expect up to 200 grand for a nice sized ocean lot, and in Chester itself haha well the houses there on the water will be over a million guaranteed.
